  1. Guerra will be out for at least another inning, if not two. He shouldn't be under any sort of pitch count restriction. This is exactly what this pitching staff needed.
  2. They don't need a fifth starter right now but they don't have a backup catcher or anybody capable of playing CF adequately right now. Suter being optioned or Drake going away would have been my preference so there were other options. Suter actually pitched great last night. I thought he was pulled prematurely. Would have been nice to see him get through 6 at least.
  3. We are one strained hamstring away from seeing Sogard or Thames running around out there. I just hope they make it through today with no more injuries.
  4. Drake would probably be fine in low-leverage situations. Unfortunately, nearly every inning the pen has thrown so far this season has been pretty high leverage.
  5. I believe part of the reason for keeping Williams over Hoover was that if Pina needs a DL stint, they'll need to add Christian Bethancourt to the 40-man and Hoover was probably the low man on the 40-man totem pole. Assuming they wouldn't call up Nottingham instead. Good point. Nottingham doesn't have near the veteran grittyness that Counsell requires. Bethancourt, on the other hand, probably eats a bowl of grit for breakfast every morning. I actually like Bethancourt. Solid defender with a huge arm, and the bat showed well in spring.
  6. Why wouldn't they keep Phillips and option one of our many AAAA relief pitchers? Because the only relievers with options remaining (Hader, Williams) are actually good.
  7. Drake should be gone simply because he's not available today. I would assume Guerra was already in St. Louis but just looking at flights from Denver to St. Louis, Jorge would have to really rush to make it before game time. Jennings may be the whole bullpen today. I would hope Hader and Albers are available today. Albers is a veteran pen guy who has pitched on back-to-back nights often. It isn't like he needs babying.
  8. Cain said yesterday he'll be good to go on Friday, and Yelich is slated to come off the DL Sunday. I can't imagine Broxton would only come up for a day, but stranger things have happened. It seems that 24th-25th man is going to be constantly churning this year.
  9. Agree with this 100%. I'm hoping that they give Lopez some actual run. it's time to find out what we have in some of these guys.
  10. Amazing that Drake continues to survive. I get the Hoover DFA because he just didn't look like a fit last night and we have better options but I just simply do not understand how they continue to put Drake on this 25 man roster. Phillips on the other hand, I am really glad they went after outfielders in the offseason. I know some have dreams of the defense he brings but his bat would get so annoying over the course of a season. He just simply doesn't make enough contact to be on the big league team and be a contributor. Hopefully Phillips goes down and rakes in Colorado. I was hopeful that he'd be able to carry over his performance last September into this season, but it hasn't happened. He looks like he's overthinking, rather than just letting things come to him. He's such an uber-talented guy, I think he just needs to let things slow down a little. Fortunately he's still very young (23), so the growing pains are ok. I imagine he'll be back and will likely be a major contributor to this team this year.
  11. I think they realize Drake and Hoover aren't world beaters. But as you said, Williams has options. Could be Barnes, but I doubt it. That's just the way it is, guys like Williams, Houser, etc. who have options will be shuttled back and forth. Like it or not, that flexibility really helps when you have minor injuries like this, need for a fresh arm in the BP, etc. It's basically a way to have an 11 man BP. Cutting bait on Hoover so quickly surprises me, in a good way. It shows their faith in Williams, and that they are committed to putting the best talent on the field, even if it means sacrificing depth. Williams is still going to have to survive Yelich coming off the DL on Sunday, though. I suppose they could send out Guerra or Suter, though, and bring up a different guy next time they need a fifth starter.
  12. Thanks for that info! That's why I have so much confidence that he can be a really effective MLB starting pitcher. 92 FB and 80 change is a combination of success for a starter. You don't need to throw 96 when you have a really good change. I hope you are right. His body type and stuff doesn't scream "durable ML starter", which worries me. I am encouraged by the Pedro comparisons, though, and you can't complain about the results.
  13. Guerra and Lopez up, Phillips optioned and Hoover DFA'd. Tough break for Hoover, as he was put in a pretty rough situation last night. Wouldn't surprise me to see him claimed after the spring he had. Somehow, Drake continues to collect a ML paycheck.
  14. Well, just as I typed that, they announced that Guerra and Jorge Lopez are coming up, with Phillips optioned and Hoover DFA'd. Ducky lives to see another day.
  15. So no roster move has been announced yet. Do they send Phillips down and go with a really short bench today with Cain and Pina probably off limits and Perez in CF, or do they keep Phillips up and send out a reliever? Personally I hope its Option B, with Drake or Hoover being the most vulnerable. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Williams sent down, though, because he has options, and Stearns seems to think that guys like Drake and Hoover are important "depth" pieces to have. It isn't really depth, though, if it sucks.
  16. Memo to David Stearns: Depth does not matter if it is of poor quality. Jettison these schlubs and roll with the youngsters, please!
  17. "I'm not arguing against Villar. I'm just providing information about what Sogard has added to the team." "Seriously what does Sogard add to this team?" Not really that random considering the conversation just a few posts prior was talking about 2B. My mistake for not quoting what I was responding to, but it wasn't out of the blue. Arguing for a guy that was cut over a year ago is.
  18. No options left. They'd have to waive him. I'm fine with that, actually Yeah, me too
  19. No kidding. Logan Schafer, Kyle Heckathorn and Nick Bucci were some of our other top organizational prospects from that era. Top organizational prospect doesn't equal top prospect if the system stinks. Brewers upper management at the time considered him to be a pretty solid prospect. That was never the point of my post. The bottom line is, second base is pretty weak right now and I wish we'd have kept him. That's my opinion, it isn't going to change. You can have yours. Back to the game. You are the one that brought it up completely out of the blue.
  20. There's a reason he was a minor league FA. Maybe Jennings is napping?
