  1. Slightly off topic... Does anyone have a full list of HOF voters? I could only find partial lists. My question stems from market representation. NY has like 50 voters. I could only find 1 HOF voter among the Wisconsin media (Haudricourt). It obviously makes sense that NY has a larger contingent for many reasons. However, I wonder if the Brewers ever have a borderline HOF candidate what type of push they'd get for election if Haudricourt (and probably Mccalvy and others at some point) are the only people stanning for them.
  2. Interesting to see BP's list this year. Last year Brinson, Diaz, Harrison, Phillips, Hiura, and Burnes were all rated in their top 101 One year later Brinson had a pretty disappointing debut. Diaz and Harrison have fallen out of their top 101. Phillips was traded for a rental and his MLB role is 4th OF/second division starter/platoon starter. The two guys they kept were Hiura who BP has at #6 and Burnes who had a very impressive MLB debut. (Baseball america has Burnes around 50 on their top 100 list)
  3. 1. Bryce Harper - Nats: this is tough. It's been pretty quiet on the Harper front. 2. Manny Machado - Phillies: they'll get one of the two top guys. 3. A.J. Pollock - Giants??: I don't really know, but that outfield is terrible. I mean so are the Giants, but I have no feel for this. 4. Dallas Kuechel - Angels: Honestly no idea... 5. Craig Kimbrel - Red Sox: this feels inevitable to me. Almost like the JD Martinez signing from last year. 6. Mike Moustakas - Padres:sure 7. Marwin Gonzalez - Pirates: they have a super low payroll. Don't really have any guys that demand 600+ PAs other than Marte. Gonzalez can play every day there moving around the diamond and add stability to the roster. 8. Gio Gonzalez - A's: they sorta had a hodge podge group last lear, but should get some guys back from injury. Gonzalez adds some stability. 9. Adam Jones - Indians: Sure, but who cares? I don't think he's all that good anymore. 10. Wade Miley - Brewers: I think this happens. If it's not Miley, I think it's Gio. 11. Jose Iglesias - Brewers: Arcia insurance and maybe some second base to open the season. 12. Josh Harrison - Orioles:?? lol. Sign and flip at the deadline.
  4. I'm on board with coolhandluke for the most part. Max Khris Re-sign Bledsoe Re-sign Brogdon Mid-level Brook (this is the most questionable since he might be able to get more) I'm not sure about Hill. I like him, but I don't know if the Bucks will pick up his option. The only real way to add a different max contract is if they renounce Bled and Khris. And then who are you signing that? Kemba? Klay? Kemba makes sense, but who takes over Middleton's spot? The best way to have as much talent as possible is to keep your own players. Also, bucks should be paying the tax. They have a ~top 5 player in the league and a top 2 player in the east.
  5. The scary thing about thinking of next off season is that this might be the Bucks best chance to win the NBA Finals.
  6. I think this is solid for Atlanta. Allows Camargo to either overtake Swanson as the primary SS or rotate around the field instead of trying to stick him in the OF 4-5x a week. Also keeping Duval as a 4th OF is probably a good move.
  7. Cabrera would have been fine on this deal, but I'm not sweating it. Possibly a heavy ground ball starting staff in 2019 and by all defensive metrics Cabrera has been a poor fielder for a few years.
  8. I agree with others, the name change will feel weird and I liked the sponsorship marriage between Millercoors and the Brewers. I would hope they still sell MillerCoors products over AB Inbev products. As others have mentioned, hopefully this will lead to a larger presence of local craft beer offerings.
  9. Yep, the Red Sox, Yankees, Indians, Rockies did something wrong last year... Only 1 of those playoff teams won the world series with a below average 1B... [sarcasm]By gosh, it looks like you've unlocked the newest market inefficiency! Who would have ever imagined trotting Ian Desmond out to first base all season last year was a key to the Rockies success?![/sarcasm] I know that's sarcasm, but it actually is sorta reflective of how smart teams value first base. Most of the playoff teams didn't have much invested in the first base position. It makes sense because those players are pretty freely available in the current market.
  10. Well, he's throwing a different pitch mix now. He started throwing a cutter a little bit in 2017 and relied on it heavily (42.55% of the time per brooksbaseball.net). So there's reason to believe he did actually remake himself and he will be a good pitchers again in 2019. I don't think anyone would expect a 2.5 ERA again, but a mid 3 ERA could be a reasonable expectation.
  11. Cam Castro is a former Driveline coach. Hopefully that is a sign that the Brewers are upgrading some of the equipment they use to monitor the bio-mechanics of the minor league pitchers.
  12. He can sign with a non-contender and maybe the Brewers can trade for him again at the waiver deadline so they don't need to tray and roster him all season. He's useful as a pinch hitter and spot starter, but not until rosters expand.
  13. Anderson- I think he has a role on this team. He wasn't exactly a lost cause and he's only 1 year removed from a very impressive season. His salary is likely less than what he'd get as a free agent so I think he has value to the Brewers. I wouldn't want him to be just moved for salary relief. Thames- the Brewers would likely need to package him with some type of asset in order to move his full salary. Thames at $6mm is overpaid compared to the free agent market. He isn't demonstrably better than Matt Adams ($3mm), Justin Bour ($2.5mm), or David Freese ($4.5mm) who all signed smaller 1 year deals. If the Brewers are able to shed his whole salary by giving up a non-prospect minor leaguer or international signing pool $$ it would make sense, but only if they use the savings to put toward re-signing Miley or someone else. If it's just a move to shed salary with no other benefit, I'd rather keep Thames since I still think he has a role on this team in 2019.
  14. I agree with the OP, I have high hopes for Guerra out of the pen. He had pretty strong numbers first time through the order as a starter in 2018. He also looked strong in his 10.2 relief innings in the regular/postseason too. I don't know about a sub 2 ERA, but I could definitely see him being successful and an important member of the bullpen in 2019.
  15. So if all goes well it's a 2/$32 + award bonuses. If it goes poorly in 2019, it's the 1/$18.25 we expected. I don't see how this is anything other than a great deal for the Brewers. Edit: Passan and Rosenthal reporting it's a mutual option. So that's unlikely to be to actually be exercised by both sides so it's basically the original deal we thought it was.
  16. I just glanced through the list of Boras clients and 2/3 of them who are free agents are unsigned (there might be a few that I missed). I haven't seen much if any rumors on any of them outside of Harper. Just because there aren't rumors out there doesn't mean conversations aren't happening. Signed: Zach Britton, matt harvey, yusei kikuchi, jordy mercer, trevor rosenthal, hyun-jin ryu unsigned: carlos gomez, marwin gonzalez, carlos gonzalez, gio gonzalez, bryce harper, jeremy hellickson, greg holland, matt holliday, dallas keuchel, martin maldonado, mike moustakas, oliver perez, matt wieters As for Keuchel specifically to the Brewers? I don't see it. Jake Arrieta might be a reasonable comp for Keuchel. Arreita didn't sign till march 11th last year.
  17. This is sorta rehashing stuff already mentioned in this thread and I've already stated a case for standing pat with the current group of infielders in the organization. But, I do find myself coming back to Marwin Gonzalez now that Lowrie and LaMahieu have signed. Those contracts provide a solid benchmark for what we can expect Gonzalez to get. We haven't seen any infielder get more than a 2 year deal and I don't expect Gonzalez to be the exception. Due to the positional versatility he provides he doesn't block a promotion of Hiura (or Dubon I suppose) and could provide somewhat of a softish platoon with Shaw if Shaw struggles vs LHP again in 2019. Braun is probably only good for about 400-450 PAs for the next two years so there is a lot of playing time available in the corner OF as well. Gonzalez also gives the Brewers the option of non-tendering or trading Perez next year making him a smaller net addition to the payroll for 2020. I don't necessarily know if the Brewers have it in the budget to add an infielder at this price, but he does seem to solve many of the concerns I have about the Brewers roster over the next two seasons. It's be eerily quiet on rumor front for him.
  18. I sorta feel like this is the most accurate/fair post in this thread. This is what we've heard from Stearns and Attanasio a few times.
  19. Did we ever hear how much he signed for? I know it's a split deal, but I can't find any other details.
  20. I would lean toward a starting pitcher. Miley and Gio would be attractive options although I’m not quite sure why Gio won’t get a multi year deal if Lance Lynn, Mike Fiers, and Annibal Sanchez did. Miley feels like a one year deal along the lines of the Trevor Cahill contract. Edit: I might add Clay Buchholz to the list. I haven’t read up on what made him successful in about 100IP, but his DRA- was about 85 which is pretty darn good. He’s probably in that 1 year for just under $10mm range too.
  21. What if Hiura struggles to adjust to MLB hitting? What if he doesn't hit well enough in AAA in April/May to justify a call-up? We're still pinning a LOT of hopes on a rookie that may not be ready to be thrust into the middle of a playoff race. Ya I just don’t agree. It always made the most sense to try to spend on upgrading catcher because there isn’t a highly regarded prospect or young player at the position, but due to positional scarcity second base looked like the easier position to upgrade because of all the free agent options. Now that they were able to upgrade at catcher we can reevaluate our thinking on second base. The brewers have followed a similar plan for Hader and Burnes in recent years (Not exactly apples to apples comparison, but you get the idea of how they’ve treated top prospects in recent seasons). The brewers don’t even need Hiura to come up and be even a league average hitter. They can probably live with a ~80 wrc+ from him. The brewers may still sign someone, but it’s probably someone with a history of positional versatility. I would bet if they do sign someone it’s gling to be for less than $5mm for one year since they spent big on a catcher.
  22. OK... why would you move Arcia to second base? His calling card - his main asset - is his defense at shortstop. Iglesias might be better defensively than Arcia. If the brewers like Iglesias better than the decaying corpses of Neil walker and josh Harrison it makes some sense. I think Hiura is going to be up before the ASG. So Iglesias or Galvis helps in the month or two leading up to a Hiura promotion and provides Arcia insurance at SS if he’s 2018 Arcia. Now that they’ve lengthened the line up with Grandal I’m less concerned about spending on a second baseman. I’d be fine with what they have (assuming Hiura is an early call up).
  23. This isn’t the most exciting option, but Freddy Galvis wouldn’t be the worst signing. Likely pretty cheap. Solid defender at SS, provides better Arcia insurance than Pérez and Saladino. Still better offensively than what they had 2nd last year and won’t impede Hiura’s call up (which could come as early as May). Jose Iglesias is the more expensive version of this plan (if you can convince him to play 2b or play Arcia there)
  24. I don't think you make this type of move at the C position, only to leave the poo-poo platter at 2B. They are going for it, and the moves from here on out should reflect that I think. Sign a 2B, and let Hiura develop. Just a matter of who ... Ya I won’t predict what they will do because I’ve been surprised at what they’ve done at just about every major acquisition the past two offseasons. I just think there’s a pretty solid chance Hiura is up by May and now that they’ve significantly improved the offense at catcher there is less pressure on them to fill that offensive void at second. Not that I expect Hiura to be as good as Braun, but Braun played only about 30 games in aaa before being called up permanently.
  25. This is a great deal for the Brewers. I would’ve been nervous on a deal for Grandal longer than 2 years so I’m very happy about this signing. Adding a huge offensive upgrade at catcher could give the Brewers the flexibility to roll with what they have at second base. Open with a platoon and move to Hiura at some point and let him develop in the big leagues.
