  1. I don't know why anyone would give up assets for the right to pay Gray ~$9mm. Matt Harvey signed for $12mm in free agency. There are still other starters available of this caliber.
  2. I noticed he was shooting a lot of mid-range jumpers today instead of the heavy 3-ptr approach. I wonder if Budenholzer let him go back to his comfort zone? I haven't looked up the numbers, but I thought they shot a ton of mid rangers in the two games against the Knicks. I know Khris said when he's in a funk he likes to shoot the mid range, but acknowledged it's not a part of this offense. Will be interesting to watch over the next few games.
  3. Sure he's a DH, but he's been one of the best 10 hitters in the league over the past 5 or so years and he's been very consistent. To add a true impact bat for just $14.3mm guaranteed isn't too shabby.
  4. I sorta feel like guys set to hit free agency at age 30+ should be more willing to sell off those first 2-3 years of free agency. Theyre getting the long term security and we aren’t seeing many guys get 4-5 year free agent deals once they hit 30. So there’s less downside to signing away those 2-3 years if you’re only going to be getting 2-4 years once you hit FA anyway. Having said that, Shaw would be an interesting candidate to buy out a couple years of free agency.
  5. Marlins and Giants feel like the best bets to me
  6. I am not a fan of this trade. Gamel is probably a worse hitter in 2019 than Domingo and he doesn’t really rate well defensively. Left handed helps with bench construction, but that’s the only upside I see.
  7. Other NLC teams should stop trying to win in 2019, imo.
  8. You guys have a lot of faith that someone who has played a grand total of 96 games above Class A ball (and not one game at the AAA level) is going to be significant contributor in 2019. I won't be surprised if Hiura spends all of 2019 in AAA. Braun played ~30 games in AAA before being callles up permanently. I’m not putting Braun expectations on the kid, but top prospects coming out of college don’t need 3-4 full years in the minors.
  9. I think part of it has to do with the replacement level they use for relievers and starters. They have a different replacement level they use for SP and RP. I don't know if other projection systems do that or not, but I know Fangraphs does. I agree with your questioning as well, I don't think it properly values what the Brewers do well when it comes to run prevention. I also don't think it properly values depth. The Brewers used ~50 men on the active roster the past two seasons and all but a handful of them provided value. The Brewers are pretty deep in useful players. I think the playing time projection negatively affects the Brewers since they use so many players and some of them in very specific ways.
  10. Fangraphs currently has the Brewers projected to be 4th in the NLC and 11th best record in the NL.
  11. I think he's fine with Saladino, Perez, and Spangenberg if they're confident Hiura and/or Dubon are going to be up by May. It's honestly not a terrible idea even if it isn't what I am advocating for. April- Saldino, Perez, Spangenberg combo (Saldino and Spangenberg both have an option remaining so they can and probably will be optioned at some point) May onward- Hiura (or maybe Dubon) They always have the trade deadline as insurance if they need to add a veteran at second base. ***I'd only advocate for this plan if they're going to spend money on Grandal or a high quality reliever
  12. He was injured and ineffective last year. If he bounces back to the pitcher he was between 2014-2017 then that's a huge addition for the Cardinals. If he's somewhere in between then he's still a useful pitcher.
  13. I'm not surprised at the deal Murphy got, but I think it's on the high end of the range I was expecting. I think this is a very good deal for the Rockies IF they play him primarily at 1b. Ian Desmond is a pretty bad hitter at this point in his career and didn't warrant daily PAs at 1b. Murphy might put up a .900 OPS next year.
  14. They need someone to play second base in San Antonio when Hiura gets called up the first week of May. I'm only mildly kidding. Possible member of the shuttle squad since he has an option. Plays a couple positions. Hits left handed. He's a nice complement to Saldino/Perez. I'm not saying this will happen, but if they go into spring training with Saladino, Perez, and Spangenberg as the main guys fighting for playing time at 2b that probably means the Brewers are pretty confident Dubon and/or Hiura will contributors to the big league team very early in 2019.
  15. lol I noticed that too. Cot's has Burnes at 86 days of service time. So even after taking out September, he's clearly over. Baseball America is usually a little more conservative with their lists ranking guys close to the majors high even if their ceiling is lower so it doesn't surprise me that they have Nottingham in the top ten.
  16. The Angels should only sign pitchers who have already had Tommy John surgery hoping the pitcher has gotten it out of their system.
  17. Ya, If the Brewers can shed Thames' full salary that's a win. I still think he has a purpose on the team at present, but he might end up being redundant depending on what they do with filling second base.
  18. Ignoring all your other ridiculous rudeness, the Cubs contract is one to compare to. You can make an argument the Brewers shouldn't go down that road financially (you did, and I don't totally disagree) but the Cubs contract is exactly the comparison that I'd bet Lowrie and his agent are looking at and trying to get. Zobrist has more positional flexibility than Lowrie. Lowrie only had 14 appearances last season that were not at 2nd base (SS). Meanwhile, Zobrist had appearances in 2015 before he was a free agent at the following positions: 2B, 3B, RF and LF. Also, there are a ton of 2B options available in free agency and via trade. (especially when compared to Zobrist's free agency) While there are many big payroll teams that would take Lowrie, there are not many that need him. I mean Lowrie played on a team with 3 other allstar caliber infielders who all got 600+ PAs last season. Just because he wasn't used in a versatile role don't mean he isn't capable. He's played all 4 infield positions in his career so If I team wanted to use him in more of a utility infield role I would assume he's capable of filling that role. I don't think Lowrie will get as much as Zobrist, but I agree they'll probably try to use that contract as a comp.
  19. I actually kinda think this Brantley deal might be a pretty reasonable contract comparison for Lowrie. Yes Lowrie is a few years older, but on a 2 year deal what's the big difference? Maybe the Astros bumped the AAV a little to avoid a third year, but I think this is pretty close to what Lowrie will get.
  20. Ya, that was really the first extended run DJ has gotten this season. I agree he looked good for the most part. Especially on defense against Griffin. I think he got a little lost at times when defending Leur, but overall no complaints about last night from him. He looked like a perfectly capable 10th man for at least one night. Sterling feels to have supplanted Donte and Pat in the rotation. Neither of those two guys are shooting particularly well even if they do some other things on the floor. Sterling Is a perfectly solid rotation guy. I think Tony Snell has been perfectly solid and consistent this season in Bud's system. I wouldn't be surprised if they still try to move his $$ to give them more flexibility during this off season when 4 starters are free agents, but he fits well in this scheme IMO. I think there will be plenty of opportunities for DJ, Thon, Donte, and Sterling to pick up minutes this season. It might not be consistently 20 min per game, but guys will continue to get banged up and take games off to rest and that will open up minutes for the young guys.
  21. That's all well and good for the Brewers to want to do but the player you sign has to be ok with it. You need to find a player willing to accept a short term deal and the fact that they are just holding a spot until Hiura is ready to replace them, which could likely be all of two months. Very true. Luckily there's a deep FA pool of 2b. The Brewers should be searching for certain skills not certain players. When you're targeting certain skills it's easier to pivot when the price isn't right. Jed Lowrie is just the perfect example for my argument because he's already demonstrated the capability of moving around the infield a little. Asdrubal Cabrera could be the bargain version of Jed Lowrie. My main point is that the Brewers shouldn't just roll out Perez and Saladino at 2b until they call up Hiura in May. They should probably have another layer to that plan and the Astros executed what I think the Brewers should be trying to do.
  22. I'm sure Claudio will fill that role. I think they'll sign a lefty reliever to a minors deal as well. I can't wait for Mike Zagurski round 2

  24. So I think this is a great example of what the Brewers should be doing at second base. Hear me out... The Astros are within striking distance of a World Series. They have a top prospect ready to step in in the outfield, but there's some risk with anyone who hasn't played a ton (or at all) in the big leagues. So they sign a very good, mid-market, free agent to a two year deal. If the prospect forces his way onto the roster, I'm sure the Astros will shuffle things around in order to get both in the line up. Shift Brantley to some DH/1b PAs. The Brewers could do the same thing with Jed Lowrie. Attempt to sign him to a two year deal. If Hiura forces his way to the bigs by May, you can shift Lowrie into a Ben Zobrist type role where he starts 5-6x/week, but he plays a little 3b, 1b, ss, 2b. Lowrie might not want to sign up for a role where he isn't primarily a starting second baseman, but that's the type of move the Brewers should make IMO.
  25. I agree. There just wasn't room on the roster to give Lyles his guaranteed deal. They already have 12 pitchers who seem probable to make the opening day roster if healthy and then Houser, Barnes, Williams, Peralta ready just behind them. They have probably 8 guys ahead of him for a rotation spot. I like Lyles, but the Brewers need more flexibility with their last man in the pen. I agree that they'll likely add several guys on minor league deals. Stash them in the minors until they use them on a one time call up like JJ Hoover and then DFA them after a couple of ineffective innings.
