  1. Ya, no way the Brewers could or should sign Machado long term.
  2. The line up wasn't great to begin with, but with Shaw and Cain out of the lineup it's even worse. Then add in the lefty starter and Thames hits the bench too... Luckily, Suter has been pitching well and the Royals aren't good so they still have a shot with this rag tag line up. 3-2 Brewers.
  3. I agree. Really, none of the current rotation is really a GB heavy pitcher. Unless it's DAvies, Miley, or Woodruff getting the start I don't really mind sacrificing infield defense in the early going. Once they get the the bullpen, especially with a lead I would make the defensive switch. Whether it's Aguilar getting a start at 3b or Miller at SS/2b. The bullpen has a few guys like Jennings, Jeffress, Barnes, and even Knebel who get a decent # of GB. Since Counsell is likely to make a double switch regardless once he goes to the pen I think this is a viable stop gap in certain games.
  4. I'm not convinced the Rays would move him. I think it's once of those Jim Bowden fabricated rumors.
  5. I actually tend to agree with your list. Basically I don't see them parting with Huira or Burnes. I think it's unlikely they need to trade Peralta, Ray, Ortiz, or Woodruff too. I don't think deGrom ends up getting moved and that's really the only guy rumored to be potentially available who I'd be interested in at a premium price. I think Stearns will upgrade this team, but the players he's likely to target just aren't likely going to require highly touted prospects or even multiple top prospects. Ever since the change in draft pick compensation for free agents, rentals just haven't commanded major returns. Yu Darvish only managed Willie Calhoun who was 50-100+ on mid season lists last year. JA Happ isn't Yu Darvish. We've already seen the return for Herrera wasn't crazy. The return for Darvish and Martinez wasn't crazy last year.
  6. I like Broxton, but he's probably a September call up at best to help with PR/Defensive substitution late in games. The Brewers mess that is the middle infield is really clogging up the roster. Perez, Miller, Sogard, Villar, and Arcia for essentially two black hole positions.
  7. Sahadev Sharma wrote a very similar post today for The Athletic about the Cubs.https://theathletic.com/407142/2018/06/25/kris-bryants-sore-shoulder-is-a-minor-concern-compared-to-his-and-anthony-rizzos-struggles/ It's interesting that the Cubs and Brewers are essentially the exact same in run prevention. 3.68 RA/G for the Brewers vs 3.71 RA/G for the Cubs. The have a very similar record. Yet the Cubs are at 4.79 RS/G and the Brewers are at 4.34 RS/G. Sharma has some charts in his post showing the run out come frequency for the Cubs vs other teams in the bigs. With the off day today maybe, I'll play around and make a similar chart for the Brewers.
  8. I like Barnhart, but I don't think the Reds will be particularly motivated to move him.
  9. Anderson Espinoza was rated much higher when that trade was made. Baseball America's 2016 mid-season list had him ranked #24. I seem to remember some lists at the time had him in the late teen's. Espinoza was definitetly a consensus top 25 prospect in all of baseball when that trade went down. That is correct, but this was clearly a product of big market bias. At the time, I thought he was extremely comparable to Diplan...only one pitched for the Brewers while the other pitched for the Red Sox. With that said, Pomeranz isn't really comparable because of the remaining contract. A rental versus 2.5 years of control, not even close to the same. ya it was admittedly a stretch to begin with and then i whiffed on Espinoza's prospect status. There haven't been too many decent rental starters moved at the deadline the past two seasons to draw a comparison to.
  10. Suter is my favorite Brewer for the past two years. He's not the best player on the team, but for some reason he's been pretty successful the last couple seasons. The team seems to love him. He's an interesting interview. Just seems like a dude who loves being in the bigs and that's fun to root for.
  11. I like him. Probably top 3 on my wish list as far as trade targets go. I think the Brewers need to and will add a catcher to the 25 man roster. The Kratz magic is probably over so I think at least a catcher to share time with Pina if not become the primary starter would be appropriate. It could just be Nottingham or Bethancourt, but those two probably wouldn't add anything significant offensively either.
  12. It doesn't really matter how old Happ is given he's a rental anyway and he's pitching very effectively so far this year (and has the past 3 season too). If your argument is that trading one of the Brewers better pitching prospects for any of the rental SP I would tend to agree. I don't think I would give up Woodruff, Peralta, or Burnes Ortiz for a rental SP. Probably wouldn't give up Ortiz either. Happ is probably the only rental SP I want. I would be ok with Tyson Ross too, but at a lower price.
  13. Oh I totally agree. In every loss I attributed to the bullpen giving up the tie or lead the Brewers scored 3 runs or fewer. Here's the spreadsheet so you can check it out for yourself. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WypU_dzqR6qds8m3EjlnVthPazCLLXxzxsCTgMVhVjg/edit?usp=sharing
  14. Santana and Woodruff is more than I think it would take. Definitely more than I would give up. It might take someone like Woodruff though. Drew Pomeranz is the closest deadline deal I could find recently that would be similar to Happ. Pomeranz had 2.5 years of control and only garnered a top 75ish prospect 1:1. Pomeranz had 17 starts for the Padres before being traded, throwing 102 innings with a 2.47 ERA. (3.15 FIP) Happ has a longer track record than Pomeranz did, but I don't think Happ costs more than someone like Woodruff
  15. An interesting piece in The Athletic today by Eno Sarris about the fireman role. https://theathletic.com/400794/2018/06/21/sarris-on-the-return-of-the-bullpen-fireman/ (subscription required) He opined that the Brewers have started to alter their strategy with Hader given their struggles in games following games in which he's pitched. He hasn't pitched 2 full innings in ~ 1 month. I don't necessarily agree they've actually changed how they're using Hader. They've been very conservative in how he's been used though. Stearns mentioned on the broadcast a while back that when he throws 30+ pitches they will give him 2 days off. I think the way Hader has been used so far this season is perfect. While yes, he's been unavailable at times, the overall record in games he has pitched (especially multiple innings) outweighs the drawback of him being unavailable. I looked at every game in which he has pitched (22-2 record). I also looked at games in which he was "likely unavailable". I defined those as the 2 days following appearances of 1.1 or longer. The Brewers are 11-14 in those games. 8 of those losses could be directly linked to the bullpen giving up the tie or lead (I included allowing an inherited runner from a SP to score in that count). (I have more notes on these games if anyone is interested i can send them the google sheet) Overall they're 33-16 in games Hader either pitched or was unavailable. That's a .673 clip.
  16. The only lefty the Pirates have in their pen is Vazquez. He's probably only coming in for the 9th inning anyway.
  17. Maybe this is the game the Brewers run into a 3 run homer off Kuhl and Suter/Hader can make that stand up. I have low expectations though.
  18. Thames and Aguilar is a great platoon. You don't need to have an every day player at every position.
  19. This is obviously what is planned, but is anyone else concerned that we are taking this for granted? The guy had a major injury to his throwing shoulder and has already had his return date pushed back (we were told June at the start of the year) with no defined timetable to return. And even if/when he does return it’ll be with 2-3 months left in the season, with no spring training, and certainly a short leash for pitch counts and 10-DL stints. Just saying, while I really hope to be wrong, I for one am not banking on Jimmy Nelson to make a big impact in 2018. Agreed. It's June 19th and he hasn't thrown off a mound yet. When he's back he's back, but I wouldn't expect anything from Nelson at this point.
  20. I would say it's similar to Hader in the best way to help the club right now is in the bullpen. I don't see Burnes sticking in the bullpen any longer than this year. Ya, I don't see why anyone would be worried about them trying to use Burnes out of the bullpen this season. They still see him as a SP long term.
  21. Most of the reaction has been that the return was pretty light. No real big "get".
  22. Not thrilled about the Nats getting better, but Herrera wasn't going to be a target of the Brewers. Will be interesting to see if this gets the hot stove cooking earlier. With the number of teams clearly out of it already it might make sense. Although teams like the Giants, Rockies, Angels, Twins, Tigers, etc who are on the fringe probably won't want to commit to moves until closer to the deadline to see where they stand.
  23. None of the Brewers SP are really ground ball dominant, but Chacin has a higher GB% that most of them. If they need/want to start Aquilar at 3b I'd rather it be during a Suter or Anderson start.
  24. The Twins are playing in the weakest division in baseball and are 6-2 vs Cleveland so far. On top of that if they overtake Cleveland & make the postseason (I don't think a WC is possible with the other AL teams), Polanco is ineligible for the post-season due to the PED suspension. With the struggles (& sending out) of Sano, Escobar might get some time at 3B once Polanco returns. I highly doubt the Twins move Escobar unless they get double the value.. I think we differ there. If the Twins continue to struggle to win consistently I don't think they'll hang around. 5.0 our right now. I think the Indians are really good and will eventually go on a run where they win 15 or 20 or something like that and put a little more separation between them and the rest of that crap division. The Twins 'sold' at last year's deadline. They traded for Jamie Garcia and then traded him again 2 weeks later when they struggled during that stretch. Is it possible they're a little more invested in this season after spending some $$ on morrision, reed, lynn, etc? Maybe, but I just don't see them sticking around in the playoff race and recent history would suggest they could trade off some of these guys.
  25. Interesting name at SS I just across is Eduardo Escobar of the Twins. At this point they will likely be 5+ games out of the division race and well out of wild card contention when the deadline rolls around. Escobar has mostly been a utility man, but has played a lot of SS this year because of Polanco's suspension. He's probably a guy the Twins will be willing to move. He's a switch hitter and is hitting well from both sides of the plate. He could be the primary starter at SS and also spell Shaw at 3b against tough lefties. He'd presumably cost significantly less than Machado. He may have moved to the top of my wish list.
