  1. I don't think Stearns is trading one of his best hitters in Renfroe. I do believe Wong is either re-signed and traded or just let go. I hope Stearns can bring in somebody to replace Rogers, but with so many other holes to fill, I don't see him paying $8M. The pen was horrible after the trading deadline, so I guess it's a possibility unless they pickup somebody in a trade. Right now as I see it: Williams-Bush-Cousins-Stzrelecki-Suter-Milner-Houser-New Addition (hope and a prayer).
  2. I see Caratini getting about $3M. Tellez more than doubles his salary to $4M. Wong is gone, either threw a sign and trade or just let go. Turang ($710K) to 2B unless Stearns can do a better job and get a 3B. Then Urias at 2B, Turang as super utility (Peterson and wong nor re-signed). Urias $4.5M. Adames $8M. That's $20.2M or let's say $24M on the hgh side.

  4. I think you are being way too simplistic about the pen usage. There were numerous games where the starters had over 100 pitches in the 5th inning. Or the starter was getting shelled badly early in the game. Plus you forget all the starters (thoroughbreds) missed significant time except Burnes and he had high pitch counts a lot. Alexander started 11 games, Small 2, Houser started 9 games where he had 75-100 pitches in the 4th inning. A lack of talent in the pen also led to Council using relievers more than he should have. Nobody says his decisions were always great, but many things contributed to the pens' failures. To say Council doesn't know the strength of the team is simply wrong.
  5. The lottery has been set. According to Tankathon.com the Brewers have a .02% chance of picking 1st. .03 chance of picking 2nd or 3rd. .04% of picking 4th or 5th and .05% chance of picking 6th. So about a 98% chance of picking 18th.
  6. No surprise here. The Brewer pitchers are 3rd or 4th worst in MLB at giving up HRs. The horribly slumping offense just continues to choke at every opportunity. The bright spot: they have a shot at the #1 draft pick (about half a percent chance). Unless Stearns wants to see attendance further erode, some big changes have to be made.
  7. I wouldn't move Adames. His natural position is SS. He has been a SS his entire career and plays very good defense so why move him? Does anybody know if he can play 3B or if he would accept the move? Turang has played various positions in the minors. Better to move him than Adames. The best move would be to find a young 3B through a trade, sign and trade Wong, and put Turang at 2B.

  9. I think Wong is gone, especially if Stearns can somehow swing a trade for a 3B. Turang is raking in the minors (.286/.361) and the Brewers need to get a good look at him. Urias' best position is also 2B. With almost half the team arby eligible, that $10M could go towards other more needy positions.

  11. Hiura is now .500 for September (20 whiffs in 40 ABs). I think his future in Milwaukee is being measured in days. The strikeouts are just to overwhelming to keep him next year.
  12. Depending on trading Burnes for a haul, I believe Stearns can afford both Woodruff and Adames. Prospects have proved nothing and until Stearns fixes 3B-C, the offense remains highly questionable. That's why they can't afford to lose Adames. The Fangraphs top players list I saw had Adames as a top 25 (#23) and Wong at #82. I believe Adames is an elite bat and a very good defensive SS. To me, 31+ HRs, about 100 RBIs, and 4.7 WAR is elite.
  13. Since there are tie-breakers now, I think all the odds makers take into account equal records. ESPN is right around where almost everybody has the Brewers' chances at the playoffs, 25%. 3 behind with 11 games to go. The Phillies have the Braves for the next 2, then the Cubs for 3, the Nats for 4, and the Astros (who will be playing for little or nothing) for 3. The Padres have the Rockies for 2, the Dodgers for 3, the White Sox for 3, and the Giants for 3. I never thought I'd be a Cubs or Dodgers fan, but I am now until the end of the season.
  14. If Stearns is open to trading Wong, the Mariners come to mind as a good team looking for a reliable 2B. They have players the Brewers would be interested in to make a deal.
  15. IF (and it's a big IF) Stearns can somehow find a 3B through trade, then I think Wong is gone for sure. They have to find a spot for Turang, and if it's not 2B (Urias at 2B) then it's in Peterson's role as a super utility guy. I think McCutchon-Rogers-Narvaez are gone for sure. Depending on what CC thinks of Brosseau I think Peterson is going to get more than what Milwaukee wants to pay and he leaves too. Rogers just isn't worth the projected $9M he'll get so Stearns has to find another lefty in the pen besides Suter (I think he'll be back). Houser is questionable unless they trade Burnes for a huge haul.

  17. I believe McCutchon is gone for sure. He's hitting .238/.309/.391... He isn't worth his contract. If CC doesn't want Hiura, DH is another large hole to fill.
  18. I think a better question is why is Alexander in the major leagues. ERA of 5.40 - WHIP of over 1.7 - in 71 IPs allowed 88 hits, 12 HRs. - teams are hitting over .300 against him. Is the Brewers' farm system that horribly weak that they don't have anybody better than a DFA candidate?
  19. It will all depend on how the young guys hit. Yelich can go get the ball with the best of them. His accurate but weak throwing arm can be a problem at times. However, the Brewers need offense and some power in LF if they were to make Yelich the DH. The Brewers have pretty good defense at 3B-CF-C, but the lack of offense at those positions has hurt them severely this year.
  20. Exactly when should the Brewers offered an extension to Burnes? In 2019 he has an 8.82 ERA, allowed 13 hits/9, allowed 17 HRs in only 49 IPs, and had an 1.84 WHIP. In 2020 he did much better, but they certainly aren't going to offer a big money extension based on one shortened season. He was great in 2021, but by that time he and his agent are looking for mega money and a long term contract.
  21. I have long been a CC fan, but I cannot understand his ridiculous reasoning for not playing Hiura. Since the 8th of Sept Hiura has exactly 6 ABs. McCutchon in the same period is 3 for 29 with 13 Ks. I can't see any way McCutchon is a Brewer next year, so why play him when he's clearly slumping very badly? Hiura should finish out the season as the DH and fill in for Rowdy at times.
  22. The old saying, "the bat plays" will still be true. Offense for most teams, is still the priority unless that player is terrible defensively. If both guys are crappy hitters, then yes the guy with range would play. The good hitting, mediocre defense middle infielder would probably be switched out in the later innings.
  23. If the Brewers went with an all rookie outfield next year it would be a sign of a complete tear down and giving up on 2023. Where Stearns has to address is not LF/RF, but CF-3B-C. I think baring an extreme let down by Hiura, he's the starting DH next year with Yelich in LF and Renfroe in RF. Maybe Stearns can trade for a rookie 3B and start a rookie in CF. I agree Burnes or Woodruff will be traded to bring in help at 3B and other areas.
