  1. This part is going to be almost impossible to know due to a few factors. -I'm sure the Brewers are doing a cost segregation study on improvements to Maryvale. Some of the improvements will be able to be expensed on their own merits, and quite possibly in 2018. -Some of the improvements to the existing structures could be bonus depreciation eligible, and quite possibly in 2018. -However, due to the incredibly confused language in the tax law, there is significant conflict between depreciation, qualified business income (which is a whole other can of worms for sport franchise owners), and the business interest expense limitation. In short, there are a bunch of tax treatments the Brewers could opt for, depending on the nature of the improvements, the activity the improvements are related to, the tax status of the LLC members, and a number of other factors. -I'm not sure if the Brewers are a calendar year or fiscal year entity. Even beginning to guess what the organization's net profits are, taxable income, or anything else like that currently is not possible. The Brewers and their CPA firm(s) probably don't even know what it is yet. I'd also suggest it may not matter a whole lot. The Brewers' owners are driven by a desire to increase the value of the franchise. If they think spending some extra money now will help them be able to sell at a much higher rate later, they'll spend the money. Last paragraph is very interesting to me. I would argue by investing more in payroll at the present time, would go a long way towards doing just that. I have no idea how much a World Series would add to the value of the franchise but if I had to guess I’d say min of 100+ million. I know the investment in payroll can’t guarantee a World Series but it can make it MORE likely to occur. Spend money to make money is highly appropriate in this scenario. Brewers break even in Years of contention for the series Brewers make their 20+ mil profit when not quite there Brewers make massive profit in rebuild
  2. Of all the ones I’ve read, this is my favorite! With Kimbrel, record should be accurate.
  3. I’m hoping clancy’s Prediction is correct and Kimbrel’s signed by Sunday night. Whenever is good with me at this point.
  4. LaRussa’s with Boston last year or two. Agree on trade. Took the floor over ceiling. In my opinion hit tool stays longer> votto
  5. JJ's agent posted this over in the minor league thread on Sunday: agent39 Rehab moved up 2 days. Throwing in an extended game 29th. Them well see. Fyi guys Thanks for the info! Guess we’ll know a little more Friday eve then.
  6. Just curious when we get more info on jj, would think he had another pen. Is he in Arizona? With the team? I’m sure brewers have the gun readings and have a good idea what to do next.
  7. An offense that averages 5+ runs can overcome an average bullpen. At least I think it can I hope, until our pen gets stronger as the year progresses. I have enough faith in stearns to figure it out. I think this pitching will improve dramatically from start to finish. Tread water early will bold well late when like last year this team should be a juggernaut in October.
  8. This could be why it’s so quiet on the Kimbrel front. IF this report is true. I really don’t know what to believe, I don’t think anyone outside of Stearns and Kimbrel’s team do either. If healthy, hoping for a pillow deal, although the longer this inaction goes on the less faith I think Kimbrel has in his own ability to have a great year.
  9. In stearn’s I trust: First of consecutive world series is happening this year!
  10. With how quick guys have to make a decision based on release point on a potential 94 mph cut fastball on the hands or a changeup dropping away...even an average changeup with at least a little arm-side run thrown that percentage of the time is going to play up big time. I'm so curious how Peralta's arsenal will play. That extra velocity and an average changeup could yield a star. Even without the changeup, he could be the next Kluber...I'll feel so much better about his outlook if he gets a few swings and missed on changeups in April. Peralta’s pitches are fine the way they are, command of his FB is the only thing keeping him from being the most dominating pitcher in all of baseball. Strong words but true. He’s made progress every year, slow but progress none the less. Just want to see him get to 175-180 innings this year, so can really get turned loose next year.
  11. Scares me too. Hoping that was just a blip, and JJ will be back throwing his typical mid-90s stuff by mid-April. Perhaps that is overly naive and optimistic, but I'm a big JJ guy and want to see him succeed. Don't sleep on Taylor Williams. Upper 90s heat with great breaking stuff. His trouble has been consistently finding the zone. I'm hoping that coming back healthy and another year removed from TJ surgery will help him with his consistency. Williams is fine just not the ninth. The key to the Brewers early-season pen is going to come down to Matt Alber, he’s one of only 2 pen arms with real closing experience. I wish we could transfer Matt Albers brain into Barnes head there’d be our answer.

  13. If you consider Guerra the second starter, I’m curious how brewers gonna deploy him with 2 high leverage arms most likely out for some time. My guess would be closing, since he’s probably the second best pen arm now. I know you weren't asking me, but I suspect they'll go "closer by committee" approach, at least until Jeffress is back. It wouldn't surprise me to see Guerra get opportunities, along with Hader, Claudio, Williams and maybe even Barnes, based entirely on matchups. Once Jeffress is back, and if he checks out physically, I suspect he'll get the bulk of the 9th inning opportunities, just like he did last year while Knebel was out and during his ineffective time. Please no Williams and Barnes. Both need to stay far away from 9th inning. Just don’t have the confidence some do in jeffress this year. 83 mph scares me.
  14. 1)Hiura 2)Turang 3)Brown- Look for him in brewer pen after S-2 4)Dubon 5)Ashby- 6)Garcia-loads of potential 7)Rasmussen-future high lev pen arm 8)perdomo- Could be in big league pen this year 9)Webb- another possible pen arm this year 10)Taylor 11)Fernandez 12)Ray- 13)Lutz 14)Andrews 15)Roegner 16)Ward 17)Bello 18)Henry 19)Feliciano 20)Erceg 21)Gray 22)Supak 23)Olson 24)Lazar 25)Grisham 26)Nottingham 27)Matulavich 28)Howell 29)Gatewood 30)Jarvis
  15. Sorry I was mistaken, it’s not a fangraphs article, although Vince Genero helped contribute. Fields of green is website no link. Google: how much money are the playoffs worth to a mlb team, you’ll see it.
  16. Yes haven’t seen him pitch this year, but last year he was down three or 4 mph on his fastball from 2017. To me it look like he was throwing a cutter but was told fan graphs said it was a fastball. His stuff certainly isn’t a problem though.
  17. I think he's a really nice breakout candidate. He missed two years, came back last year, earned a role on the team, though was up and down. But his command should be coming back now that he's finally got a healthy off-season to train and a full ST'ing. Also, still holding out hope for Jacob Barnes. He's got the stuff to be dominant. Still, really concerning that we went from looking at Jeffress, Knebel, and Wahl to finish up games to having names like Claudio, Wilson and Fields being tossed around. From potential super pen to 3rd best pen in central. Wow how the Mighty have fallen. Only disagreement I’ve had in anything I’ve read of yours is Barnes.better in 2017 pitches scared. My opinion.
  18. Absolutely. But there are a lot of ways to add guys. And we don't need to add an ace to this team. You can add a couple complimentary pieces from a KC type team(just throwing out a team that's likely to be bad and selling at the deadline) for relatively cheap at the deadline. The problem may be that we're in SUCH a competitive division, and an improved NL, how much of a gut punch would it be to go out and add an elite catcher, one who's unlikely to be back next year, bring back Moose, have our team set up pretty much exactly how we want it for THIS YEAR(I believe this is going to be the Brewers best chance to win a WS) and then with the tough first half schedule, you find yourself 7-8 games out by the ASB? That may happen either way, but if it happens because we've got unproven relievers blowing leads regularly, it's going to hurt that much more. +1 Unfortunately prob here how reds overrated, pirates stink, cards didn’t improve enough to catch up to us, cubs starters old & gonna regress. Prob is Rockies Phillies Mets Nats braves better. Gonna be tough to get wild card this year so we BETTER win the central. Agree Agree best opportunity to win it all in at least 37 years. Why not go all in? Dayton Moore did and they won the series, with clutch hitting and BULLPEN
  19. I can understand where you’re coming from about getting the pitching now and having guys pitch for us all season. But what if Chacin gets hurt and someone like Woodruff underperforms? There wouldn’t be much wiggle room to make it work financially at the deadline if the payroll is maxed out prior to the season starting. Get the pen help now. We need it now. We’re facing a daunting schedule, by FAR toughest in baseball down 2 HIGH LEVERAGE pen arms, I’m sorry but this board gonna explode when Burnes goes 8 strong only to have Albers give it up. Or Barnes or Williams or..... cause Hader Guerra can’t pitch.
  20. I think that’s a great idea good sir, help us earlier in the year when we’re short in the pen and have prob the hardest opening schedule in the history of baseball STARING US IN THE FACE. I haven’t heard many if any talk about our ridiculous schedule. Just yet reason number 56,562 to sign HIM and quit playing around. Geez
  21. That’s true, but good cpa’s Can work magic so I used conservative estimates on revenue increases to I think more than offset that. Also IF low end playoff revenue added to just this years payroll that comes to: 186 mil one time payroll for 2019. So no wonder all these one year signings. Almost 60 million more for this year to spend so as not to lose $. This is NOT a small market team at the present time. This not including the following: Larger national tv deal to pay owners this year Larger local tv deal starting next year More income from mlb tv & streaming There’s more ........ but I’ll stop there As someone in a earlier post said > mark bought a cash cow Just stop and think about this information for a time, ruminate on it. If the payroll is 135-140 mil that’s a 40-45 mil gross profit again in a year we need a certain pitcher not yet signed. If we spend 20+ on him This year we’d still have 8-13 mil to spend at trade deadline & call ups plus 20-25 mil gross profit. Payroll in 2017 was $69 million. Even if we say the 67 million in operating income was straight profit from 2017, that brings the break even point up to $136 million. Where are you getting the $186 million payroll from? I know that playoff revenue could probably push it a little higher for this season since we made the playoffs, but where is the extra $50 million coming from? Fangraphs est 20-30 mil extra for playoffs plus extra attendance It’s in post#132
  22. You could be right. But the owners are gonna guard there books with everything they have Which is there right as a private business enterprise. So all we can do is guess based on certain info. I will say the more I read the more apparent it is as to how much $ these guys or corporations are raking in. Things could be worse in brewer land, we could have Nutting owner of the pirates making 50-70 mil year after year refusing to increase payroll as our owner>no thanks. I could be off on my figures, but not by tens of millions. Let’s forget the 186. But what if the 150-160 is break even. I think that’s a figure that would surprise most fans.

  24. 2017 profit > 67 mil. 2018 profit > 47 mil not incl playoffs(fangraphs estimates 20-30 mil) Very conservative extra 20 mil in revenue offset by 40 mil higher payroll 2019 > projection > Extra 150,000 attendance > extra 10 mil revenue 2019 >109+47+10 = 166 mil payroll this year to break Even 2018 playoff revenue not used >20-30 mil
