  1. They're literally just picking up arms to temporarily fill mop up innings while in crisis mode with guys going on the COVID list left and right. None of these guys are expected to be long term solutions (although who knows, RP can find grooves sometimes). I wouldn't worry too much if every guy isn't going to pitch like Hader while he's out. With that said, it sucks for Axford that he got hurt so quickly. He actually looked better than I expected until that last batter when it was obvious something was physically wrong. A couple better calls and a little more luck with fouled off pitches and soft base hits and he very easily could have breezed through that inning.
  2. Anyone disappointed, just pretend the Brewers traded for Strickland and Tellez yesterday and waited until now to trade for Adames and Escobar. EXCITING!
  3. The optimistic view of this... his FIP (3.78) and xFIP (3.54) are much better than his actual ERA (5.89). The Brewers with their defense have gotten in general better ERA's than FIP/xFIP would indicate, so if they can continue that trend with Norris, that would be good. He's also been very good against lefties. So if you can minimize his appearances against lefties, he could work out (although the 3 batter minimum could make that difficult):
  4. Well that would take care of that whole, the whole staff is under 4.00 ERA issue
  5. We often take too long to score our runs and have to rely on a big inning to make the lead comfortable. [sarcasm]I don't like that the guys that don't make as much money contribute more than the guys that make more money.[/sarcasm]
  6. This exactly...I know people have said they are satisfied with the offense, particularly since the All star game, but...we need to keep in mind the staffs they have faced. The offense is unlikely to look like this in the playoffs vs the Dodgers/Padres/Giants staffs. That's why i am a huge proponent of adding another big bat(s) before tomorrow. You can never have too many. I'd love a big bat. Where do we put it at this point though? I guess 1st or 3rd but it's hard not to be happy with Urias/Escobar at 3rd and Tellez/Escobar at 1st either. For a 2-3 month stretch those guys may outplay any big bat you get anyways. Again, I'd be stoked seeing a Donaldson or Mancini added to the daily lineup, but it's harder to justify their costs considering what we already have. That said, if it ends up costing less than expected, sure go for it!
  7. Could Rowdy be any more this year's Vogelbach than he is (in more ways than one)??
  8. Okay, now I ask this in all honesty and not trying to be a jag off...But people say it's hard to compete with the Dodgers at the trade deadline etc. Let's assume for a minute Scherzer would have waived his no trade clause for Milwaukee...The Brewers could have at least come close to this right?? I mean a Small and/or Ashby, Turang + package comes very close, doesn't it?? If not even better?? I know not everyone's a fan of the BTS site, but just to have some perceived values, this is approximately the value of just those two guys compared to guys in the Brewers' system: And that doesn't even account for the fact that the Dodgers are reportedly offering a couple additional mid-level prospects on top of that.
  9. No one was worried that Escobar was going to cost too much... this was exactly the reasonable move most people were always on board with, going all the way back to this past offseason.
  10. Nice pickup! As others have mentioned, it doesn't move the needle a ton when we're at full strength, but this is a great depth move to protect against injury and slumps moving forward. It also means we'll have another nice PH option off the bench (whether that's Escobar or Urias on most nights), along with whatever OF's aren't in the lineup that night. I'd like to see one reliever (or #3-4ish SP, moving Houser to RP) added still. At that point you have to be pretty happy with all the acquisitions DS/Arnold have made (incl. Adames, Tellez, and Strickland). Anything else is gravy (and potentially a lot of gravy).
  11. It checks out on everyone's favorite BTV site because of the salaries involved. I can't imagine MA would approve it (it adds something like $50M over the next two and a half years), but otherwise it would be one heck of a baseball trade for the Crew. I imagine the crew would have to add a couple more prospects so 1.) the Twins feel like they're getting more for Buxton, and 2.) the Brewers can get the Twins to kick in a few more dollars to cover Donaldson's contract. At that point it may start getting to complex to actually happen though. But other than that, sign me up!
  12. Stearns/Arnold have done a great job of continuously improving the team throughout the year already and not just waiting until the deadline. So I'm with those that recognize some of the "deadline" deals for this team are ones that have already occurred. Because of that, this is already a pretty different team than the one that began the season. Some MLB rankings since the Adames trade: C (11th in fWAR, 20th in wRC+) 1B (16th in fWAR, 21st in wRC+) 2B (11th in fWAR, 7th in wRC+) 3B (15th in fWAR, 14th in wRC+) SS (2nd in fWAR, 3rd in wRC+) LF (7th in fWAR, 10th in wRC+) CF (23rd in fWAR, 29th in wRC+) RF (8th in fWAR, 9th in wRC+) SP (2nd in fWAR, 2nd in ERA) RP (16th in fWAR, 8th in ERA) Hopefully some combination of Cain returning and JBJ returning to career norms will improve those CF numbers. Other than already being closer to average at some positions than maybe expected, not too many surprises. I'd love to see an impact bat added at 1B or 3B (Gallo, Mancini, Bryant, Donaldson, etc.), but regardless, I think you at least want to get some depth at 1B/3B and RP to protect against injuries and inconsistent production down the stretch. In lieu of a bigger splash, I'd love to see an Escobar-type added in addition to a relief pitcher.
  13. Just to compare Reynolds and Gallo... Reynolds 2007-09 (he pretty much peaked his first 3 years): Gallo 2018-21: Not a horrible comparison. That said, Reynolds was very good his first three years (ie. I would be happy adding that kind of production to the team), and Gallo still almost doubled his WAR in 200 fewer PAs in this comparison. Also note that Reynolds' numbers were probably helped by a high BABIP, which may have explained some of his decline after these three years. Whereas Gallo's low BABIP could lead to better results moving forward.
  14. Gallo would be a great addition to the lineup, and as has been mentioned, he can play 1B, LF, CF, and RF (and very well). 2019-21:
  15. I'll throw Mancini into this mix as well. All three of those guys have experience at 1B, LF, and RF. Gallo and Bryant have played CF. And of course Bryant also can play 3B. 2018-21 Defense: 2018-21 vs. RHP: 2018-21 vs. LHP: Contracts: Kris Bryant - Final year of $19.5M contract Joey Gallo - Controlled through 2022 (making $6.2M this year, final arby year in 2022) Trey Mancini - Controlled through 2022 (making $4.75M this year, final arby year in 2022)
  16. If you can get a big bat without giving up too much, I'm all for it (and I assume everyone's for it). What are some specific bats you'd like the Brewers to target and what specific assets would you be okay with them giving up for those bats?
  17. JBJ has definitely been much better as of late. 112 wRC+ the past 14 days and 96 wRC+ the past 30 days. I'll definitely take that offensive production with his defense the rest of the year. Past 14 days: Past 30 days:
  18. Both Yelich and Peterson have been pretty bad the last couple weeks. I think Peterson may have stretched his magic as far as it was going to go, it was a good run though. Past 14 days:
  19. Perhaps we make a new thread for Trade Deadline Philosophies? This conversation is getting tiresome when all I want is to see if there are any new actual rumors in this thread.
  20. I would definitely trade anything for a World Series title. That said, even if we traded for Scherzer, Donaldson, Freeman, and Kimbrel we'd still have like an 80% chance of NOT winning the World Series. There's just no way to guarantee a championship, but you are pretty much guaranteeing you won't be competitive again for several years after all those trades (noting it wouldn't even be possible to make those trades in the first place).
  21. Jon Heyman @JonHeyman · 8m Brewers also have checked in on Trevor Story. Their Adames pickup has been the best in-season move but they seek another big bat. This would clearly qualify.
  22. He's in a bad slump, and he definitely hasn't played up to his contract the past year, but he certainly hasn't been the worst hitter on the roster either. Past 14 days: Past 30 days: 2021 Season: So, if you want to use a very small sample size, yes he's been awful the past couple weeks, but Garcia, Peterson, Narvaez, Pina, and Hiura have all been worse during that time period. If you extend it to the past month, he's 2nd worst on the team, but that has more to do with how hot the rest of the team has been and he has a much more respectable 90 wRC+ during that time period, which you can withstand for a month while you hope he returns to form. If you extend it to the full season, he's actually the least automatic out, as even with the recent slump he still has the highest OBP on the team for the year. It's frustrating to watch because you know what he can be, but despite his struggles, I think he hasn't been *as bad* as people have been making him out to be and you need to stick with him through it. On the positive side, JBJ has quietly become an average offensive player recently. Which, if he can keep it up along with his defense, makes him a very valuable player moving forward. And it's getting very hard to keep Taylor out of the lineup as well. Mixing and matching and playing the hot hands with Yelich, Cain, Garcia, JBJ, and Taylor could be very solid the rest of the year.
  23. For those without a subscription, here's what that article suggests for who to give up in a trade: I think we're all in agreement that making a move or two would be great and now's the time to stretch our assets a little further than usual to get a significant piece done, but I don't think this article is saying to trade "whatever it takes, no matter the cost", either.
  24. I wouldn't drop Pina based on 83 at bats. He's been a pretty consistently solid offensive player his entire Brewer career and he's a nice veteran presence on this team at this point. Not to mention, part of the reason he only has 83 at bats is that he's the small end of a platoon, so the impact of replacing him would be proportionately small as well. That said, after yesterday's game/lineup, I understand the want to upgrade the lineup against lefties. Getting Cain back to have in there instead of JBJ could be a big boost. Hiura hitting better would help a ton as well. If we're going to get someone from outside the organization, 3B is probably the best place to add. As others have mentioned, an Escobar/Cabrera type makes sense. And if they want to go big, Donaldson would be a huge addition to the lineup.
