  1. Using everyone's favorite trade simulator, this seems more along the lines of a deal to get both Chapman and Olson: It'd be a hefty price tag and I'm sure the A's would rather deal each player individually, seems that's a better way to maximize return, and this would never happen, but it sure is fun to think about and would make a pretty fun lineup: 2B Wong (LH - 106 wRC+ the past 3 seasons) SS Adames (RH - 111) / Peterson (LH - 89) 1B Olson (LH - 134) 3B Chapman (RH - 114) LF Yelich (LH - 136) RF Renfroe (RH - 104) C Narvaez (LH - 104) / Severino (RH - 91) DH Tellez (LH - 96) / Brosseau (RH - 106) CF Cain (RH - 88) / Taylor (RH - 109)
  2. That's fair, but if they're tapped out on the payroll now and don't make another bigger move, I don't think they'd have been able to swing a deal for a big bat without this deal then as well. I think there's a good chance that Renfroe does take the primary role of RF with Taylor being the 4th OF. But who knows, maybe having RF locked up now without raising payroll they'll be able to take on the arbitration salaries of someone like Matt Olson this year and next when they wouldn't have if they had to spend $8-12m to fill RF on an average bat without this deal. Wish we could fast forward past this lockout, it's going to take some real patience to see how the rest of the offseason plays out now!
  3. I don't think anyone thinks that. But saving a couple million this year and having a better player in Renfroe on the team, and then next year having Renfroe instead of nothing for the buyout of JBJ certainly doesn't hurt. If they were going to figure out a way to get a big bat with JBJ and his contract on the books, then they will still be able to after this move. And additionally they have Renfroe on the field instead of JBJ. Just doesn't seem to be much of a downside to all of it in the short term.
  4. I'm pretty happy and was fairly shocked they were able to pull off this trade. It's really hard not to like how this sets up the big league team in the short term. In no way does having a better player in Renfroe and more payroll flexibility this year and next negatively impact the way the Brewers can pursue additional acquisitions this offseason in comparison to still having JBJ and his contract on the books instead. That said, I can understand not being happy with losing those prospects, but it's not like we traded a Mitchell, or a Turang, or an Ashby, or a Small, or a Feliciano...
  5. To each their own, I love seeing the Brewers in the playoffs so I'm down with increasing that probability considering their market disadvantages. And I'll still enjoy watching the regular season just as much, especially if I know they have a better shot of making it into October. I think the key is just to make sure the division winners and the best team in the league have significant advantages for not just squeaking into the playoffs. The one and done Wild Card round the past few years was a great way of doing this. Keep the bad teams out, let some fringe teams in with a disadvantage, and give a significant advantage to the really good teams and I'm good with expanding playoffs.
  6. Yeah, I never understand the sly remarks when signings like this are made. It's not like the team, the reporter, or anyone else is making this out to be a "big" signing. It's a signing, it fills a role in the organization, and I like knowing when the team I follow has made a change in their roster, so I appreciate that it's reported. Not every report needs to be about a "needle mover" acquisition (although a lot of times the culmination of all these little moves do make a difference as the year goes on and do move the needle just enough to make a difference, it's a big reason why the team has been consistently successful despite injuries and subpar performances).
  7. Just heard on NFL Network that Aaron Jones is active today as well.
  8. FanGraphs has a nice free agent tracker tool that you can sort by proj. WAR: https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/free-agent-tracker Lots of good players still out there including: - Top 9 free agents still available - 38 of the top 50 FAs still available - 85 of the top 100 FAs still available - 131 of the top 150 FAs still available - 175 of the top 200 FAs still available Also only 4 of the top 59 FAs who play 1B and/or RF have been signed so far. 25 free agents have been signed: - 17 of 30 MLB teams have signed a FA - The Brewers are 1 of 7 MLB teams to have signed 2 or more FAs I wouldn't be surprised to see them grab another guy with some positional flexibility (ala the Brosseau acquisition, but maybe someone that covers OF/1B primarily) sooner than later in order to keep their options open, but I suspect we'll see them hold off on any larger acquisitions until the market plays out more and they can get a good value grab after the New Year (as seems to be their strategy more often than not). Maybe they'll grab another bullpen arm soon-ish as well to keep things interesting in the meantime
  9. I can't believe he had such a short tenure with the Brewers. I was going to post that same "he's got three pitches: slow, slower, and slowest" saying when I heard he had passed. I have such strong memories watching him that season with my Dad and us just laughing and being so entertained by big league hitters not being able to slow down to his repertoire. He was definitely a memorable and well liked guy!
  10. I suppose they could try to hang onto Severino, but note this is only a one-year deal. It looks like he's still arbitration eligible and under team control for 2023: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/pedro-severino-18162/ I guess when an arbitration eligible player is non-tendered they don't lose their remaining years of arbitration?
  11. Houser himself can help the bullpen. You'll trade 3 years of that for 1 year of it plus a backup catcher for 2years? How can this trade value simulater even work this as equal? Twins make this deal no matter what situation they are in. You save them over 6mil on payroll and give them a SP for 3years, a higher quality SP then the majority of SPs they have used in the 2000s. Why do we hate Houser? Is there something I'm missing? This why too many post his name as Hauser? I like Houser quite a bit, but I think you're severely underestimating Rogers and Garver. 2019-21:
  12. The strike possibility is a fair consideration, however, I'm not sure which way that will affect the "free agency flow" this offseason. Some teams may wait on certain types of signings wanting to know how that plays out first, while other teams may try taking advantage of a smaller marketplace early on to sign some guys sooner than later. Regardless, it's been pretty clear that Stearns and co. are very thorough in exploring player acquisitions, but also very patient and disciplined in waiting until they get the deals they want. So I would guess while we might see some role player type moves early on (like the Brosseau acquisition), we may need to wait out the market a bit to see which players fall in our laps again this year. All that said, there have been six signings so far, and the Brewers have one of them (plus the Brosseau trade): https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/ [sarcasm]So I guess we've been more aggressive than 24 teams so far![/sarcasm]
  13. Speaking of "late offseason" moves, here's the annual reminder not to get too antsy when nothing big has happened by the time 2022 rolls around. Not all of these ended up being winners (*cough* JBJ *cough*), but a lot of the offseason excitement with this team often comes later on (and also as we see every single offseason, the "offseason winner" often doesn't translate to regular season success): 3/08/21 - Brewers Sign JBJ (I know it didn't turn out well, but it was a surprise late deal for a decent chunk of money) 2/22/21 - Brewers Re-sign Brett Anderson 2/18/21 - Brewers Sign Brad Boxberger 2/5/21 - Brewers Sign Kolten Wong 3/6/20 - Brewers Sign Christian Yelich to Mega Extension (jury's still out on this one...) 1/10/20 - Brewers Sign Jedd Gyorko 12/17/19 - Brewers Sign Avisail Garcia 12/13/19 - Brewers Sign Brett Anderson 12/05/19 - Brewers Trade For Omar Narvaez 2/19/19 - Brewers Sign Mike Moustakas 1/14/19 - Brewers Sign Yasmani Grandal 1/26/18 - Brewers Sign Lorenzo Cain 1/25/18 - Brewers Trade For Christian Yelich All that said, COME ON GUYS WHAT'S TAKING SO LONG!?
  14. I like Canha. He always seems to sneak onto my fantasy team at some point, seems very undervalued for what he brings to the table. He's got quite a bit of time at all the outfield spots, but also has played a bit at first base. He'd be a great guy to grab early in the offseason so Stearns/Arnold have some extra positional flexibility in their annual late offseason bargain grabs.
  15. The missed field goal must be related to losing the coin flip
  16. Just to back this up. Here are the Brewers' top two starters in ERA from 2010-2019 and where Houser's 3.22 ERA would have ranked in those years: [pre]Year Best 2nd Best Houser's 3.22 Rank ---- ---- -------- ------------------ 2019 3.50 3.55 1st 2018 2.57 3.50 2nd 2017 2.74 3.42 2nd 2016 2.81 3.97 2nd 2015 3.77 3.89 1st 2014 3.51 3.53 1st 2013 3.35 3.87 1st 2012 3.44 3.64 1st 2011 3.52 3.54 1st 2010 3.84 4.17 1st[/pre] This year he had the 5th lowest ERA of our starters... that's nuts.
  17. 100% expected. And while I don't expect him to necessarily be a plus player (although his defense makes that a possibility still even if he's below average offensively), I do expect some sort of bounce back next year. People were grumbling about being stuck with Narvaez and Garcia this time last year too. Players that have their worst season ever tend to do better to at least some extent the next year.
  18. From the article on ESPN (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32542413/green-bay-packers-qb-aaron-rodgers-tests-positive-covid-19-source-says):
  19. Just to clarify, that's according to baseball-reference's version of WAR, FanGraphs has it as the following: That said, while I'm rooting for a Burnes Cy Young, I can definitely see the case for Wheeler. However, I wonder what stats you'd have to add to Burnes' resume in an additional 48.1 IP to equal Wheeler's line. The "ugliness" of that line could make an interesting case one way or the other. Edit: To answer my own question, at least to some extent, I figured out the following stat line would get Burnes to Wheeler's numbers in terms of IP, ER, H, BB, HR, and Ks: 48.1 IP, 4.47 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 3.17 K/9, 2.42 BB/9, 1.86 HR/9 So significantly worse than he's been, but the ERA/WHIP numbers aren't entirely implausible either.
  20. It would look *marginally* better. Either way, if the 49ers score a touchdown to start the 2nd half, they would still need another touchdown to take the lead in two possessions.
  21. Updated through Burnes' nice start last night:
  22. Stop. Stop. Stop, or my Mom Will Shoot! Haven't seen the sketch in years, but I can hear Norm saying it like it was yesterday. RIP Haha, that skit was great. I thought the ending where he thinks he's found a copy of "Rambo" in the car, proving he was a fan after all, only to be mistaken once he sees the full title, was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen at the time, lol. So sad to see Norm gone so soon. He was just a funny dude. There's nothing funnier than the storytelling he did as a guest on Conan and Letterman.
  23. Games featuring the top 6 NL starting pitchers according to fWAR this week: - Tuesday at 6:40pm CT: Cardinals (Lester) @ Brewers (Woodruff) - Tuesday at 9:10pm CT: Giants (Gausman) @ Padres (TBD) - Wednesday at 6:05pm CT: Orioles (TBD) @ Phillies (Wheeler) - Wednesday at 7:40pm CT: Dodgers (Buehler) @ Rockies (Marquez) - Thursday at 2:10pm CT: Dodgers (Scherzer) @ Rockies (Freeland) - Friday at 7:10pm CT: Mets (Walker) @ Brewers (Burnes*) *Currently listed as TBD, but I'm assuming he's going that game If the Rockies can put up some runs in Coors, this could get interesting...
  24. No ones's the clear runaway winner yet. It will be interesting to see how each of these guys finishes off the year, a couple of flubs and it could become clearer.
  25. We ended their 6-game winning streak last month, it'd be fun to take the wind out of their sails again by ending their 8-game streak tomorrow.
