  1. They certainly have been inconsistent and disappointing for long stretches, but I also think the offense isn't coming out of nowhere. These guys have a history of being for the most part above average offensive players. It's great to see them finally gelling for a stretch here! 2018-21:
  2. I only went back a couple weeks, but 5 of 6 of their last 3-run innings didn't involve a homerun: 6/10 - 6th inning - 3 runs on 1 1B, 1 2B, 2 BB 6/11 - 7th inning - 5 runs on 1 1B, 1 2B, 6 BB 6/12 - 4th inning - 5 runs on 2 1B, 2 2B, 2 BB 6/13 - 6th inning - 3 runs on 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 BB 6/17 - 7th inning - 3 runs on 1 2B, 2 BB 6/18 - 5th inning - 3 runs on 2 1B, 1 2B, 1 E
  3. You make this point a lot. I don't understand how it matters. None of those other first-round picks are on the Brewers, so their progress, or lack thereof, has nothing to do with Hiura. It's okay to be above average for your draft class, even the best! Somebody in that draft class has to break through first. Are you suggesting that what we are seeing is good? An acceptable trajectory? The kind of progress you would expect? Something that gives you hope for the future? He is broken now. Has been for 100 games. It gives me no comfort that there are first round draft choices on other teams that haven't contributed. Mainly because I don't cheer for other teams nor wish success for their players for the most part. But mainly because Hiura's rapid rise was what got our hopes up so high. I am sure that Indians fans were pumped about Joe Charboneau in 1980. I appreciate sveum's posts. It's good to have perspective. Hiura's still only 24 and playing against a higher level of competition than most of his peers. The last 120 games have been disappointing after his excellent debut in the big leagues, but he's still at an age that players are expected to still be developing. It would be shortsighted to give up on him at this point as he still has a tremendously high ceiling which we've seen extended glimpses of. Hopefully some more time in the minors will unlock whatever's going on with him.
  4. Ah, good catch! Thanks for pointing out the correction!
  5. The next 4 weeks the Brewers play: - 2 vs. Tigers (21-31) - 7 vs. Diamondbacks (18-35) - 6 vs. Reds (22-28) - 3 vs. Pirates (20-31) - 7 vs. Rockies (19-34) That's not just the bad teams. Those are the ONLY teams they play in the next 25 games! Throw in their 3 game sweep against the Nationals (21-28), and that's the 5 worst teams in the NL, plus a very bad (but surprisingly only 4th worst in the AL) Tigers team. Time to take a running start into the second half of the season!
  6. Not sure where he got 0.6 WAR, but on FanGraphs you can filter Team Stats by position over several years: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2017&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2017-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=21,d That shows the Brewers SS dead last in MLB with 0.8 fWAR from 2017-20. They currently have Adames with 0.4 fWAR in his 8 games with the Brewers so far: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2021&month=0&season1=2021&ind=0&team=23&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2021-01-01&enddate=2021-12-31
  7. Let's see if we can tack Taylor Rogers onto a Donaldson deal. Getting a legit 3B and a RP or two could significantly improve this team.
  8. I'm just saying, while they've been really bad in those situations, it would have been gravy if the pitcher knocked/sacrificed/walked in a run there. Houser's had a couple good swings on one guy this year, but otherwise I certainly have no reason to expect him to get a run in there. It would have been nice to score more, but I think they scored the exact number of runs as you would expect in that situation.
  9. Isn't that common knowledge? I thought they announced they were doing that before the season. I could be wrong. They definitely announced it, I just didn't know that it would be so noticeable.... Although apparently not as noticeable for the other teams, lol.
  10. Yes, thank you. The average NL pitcher OPS is .329. Okay you win. Should have expected a run there because his two homeruns make his OPS better than an average pitcher.
  11. I'm convinced by the deadened ball. I have seen more balls off the bat that past couple weeks that I thought were gone and weren't even close than I can ever remember.
  12. They also had the bases loaded with 1 out with the 9-1-2 batters coming up. Okay, lol. So the pitcher gets out and the leadoff guy has a 1 in 3 chance of adding onto that at that point too.
  13. I mean, base loaded with 1 out with the 8-9-1 batters coming up... do you really expect more than 1 run? 8th hitter gets a run in, pitcher gets out, and the leadoff guy has a 1 in 3 chance of adding onto that.
  14. This is the closest I found: https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/mlb/brewers/2021/05/13/christian-yelich-heads-rehab-nashville-after-back-improves/5070979001/ It's vague on details on how they determined what to change about how he was treating it, but sounds like there was some sort of conscious change made that has so far had good results.
  15. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen too often with this offense. It’s just disappointing when there’s one bright spot and they ride the pine after a good game or two. Wong was 3 for 5 with a double yesterday and was in the lineup today. On Friday Urias went 2 for 4 with a double and started Saturday. On Wednesday Taylor hit a homerun and started the next day. On Tuesday JBJ hit a homerun and Vogelbach went 2 for 3 and both played the next day... The number of times a guy starts after a good game massively outnumbers the times a guy doesn't start after a good game, and many of those outliers are due to lefty/lefty or righty/righty matchups with the starting pitcher.
  16. I think Shaw is one of the only players he wouldn't have sent there (although he doesn't seem hesitant to send Vogelbach for some reason): https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/sprint_speed?year=2021&position=&team=MIL&min=10
  17. [sarcasm]This is the worst thing that has ever happened[/sarcasm]
  18. I got the email too. Here's what it said:
  19. Just because JBJ and Wong were valued more because of their defense doesn't mean every move on the roster needs to be defensively motivated. Value is value. Hiura, if he's hitting the way he can, would be valuable despite his defense. Unfortunately he's not hitting the way he can, so he doesn't have the defense to fall back on. My understanding is that JBJ is a notoriously streaky hitter. In his overall good offensive year last season, he had 88 plate appearances in August where he batted .215/.284/.329/.613 and then went .326/.423/.562/.985 in 128 plate appearances to finish the season. In 2019 he had months where he OPS'd .406 and .622, and then he had months where he OPS'd .992 and .843. In 2018 he had months where he OPS'd .599 and .600, and then months where he OPS'd .826 and .827. So while his current batting line isn't what we expect overall, he's known to go through stretches like this. Fortunately, unlike Hiura, JBJ can still bring value with his defense while he's not hitting as well.
  20. Yeah, my thought is 1.) it was a very difficult ball to read in the first place, 2.) he made an aggressive diving attempt at it and it still fell a foot in front of him. If he got a one foot better jump on it, it would have taken an amazing diving catch to make. If he had gotten a couple extra feet on the jump, it would have taken a really nice sliding catch. And if he had gotten a great jump on the ball, he may have made one of those catches in his gut that he's made on a couple balls this year, which still would have been an above average play. It was a good play just to keep it in front of him and keep the runner from scoring.
  21. Lol, you guys are really overblowing the one play. It would have been a really nice play to make, but even a good defender isn't going to make EVERY above average possible catch. His aggressive attempt still kept the runner from scoring, I'll give him some points for that.
