  1. A 19-year old pitching prospect burst onto the scene in Carolina’s 6-2 victory. Nashville clinched a series victory in a 7-0 shutout, but lost the second game of its doubleheader. Biloxi lost on a walk-off single and Wisconsin struggled again. Carolina starting RHP Yujanyer Herrera just turned 19 years old, but wasn’t intimidated in his debut in full season ball as he led the Mudcats to a victory. Though a bit older at 30, Nashville starting RHP Tyler Herb is also turning heads as he continued his terrific recent form with a 7-inning shutout. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Herb, Herrera, Brice Turang, Esteury Ruiz and Hedbert Perez. Transactions: N/A Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Nashville 7, Jacksonville 0 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Jacksonville 6, Nashville 3 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Split Doubleheader in Jacksonville Nashville opened the first game with five consecutive hits to grab a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning, before RHP Tyler Herb (7 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks) then dominated in a complete 7-inning game shutout. OF Sal Frelick (2-for-4, double), OF Esteury Ruiz (2-for-4), 3B Brice Turang (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) and RF Garrett Mitchell (2-for-4) each collected two hits in the game, including Turang’s 11th homer of the season via a solo shot in the 2nd inning. That victory clinched a series win for the Sounds before the teams re-convened to play another 7-inning series finale. Nashville opted for a bullpen game in the second game, with starting RHP Lucas Erceg (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) extending his scoreless streak to nine innings with two more shutout frames here. However, rehabbing RHP Jake Cousins and normally-reliable RHP Matt Hardy didn’t fare as well, giving up three runs on four hits, three walks and two hit batsmen while recording just five outs as the Sounds fell behind 3-0 by the 4th inning. Nashville battled back via RBI hits from OF Esteury Ruiz (1-for-3, double, sacrifice, RBI) and SS Brice Turang (2-for-3, walk, RBI), then 3B Patrick Dorrian (2-for-3, triple, double) doubling and scoring on a sacrifice fly to tie it 3-3 in the top of the 6th inning. Unfortunately, RHP JC Mejia had his first bad outing of August as he gave up three hits in the bottom half of the inning, the last a 3-run blast to restore Jacksonville’s 3-run advantage. The Sunday split means that Nashville won this week’s series 4-2. Three Quick Strikes: SS Pablo Reyes exited the opening game in the bottom of the 4th inning and didn’t play in the latter contest, so this is something to monitor. With the team leading 5-0 by that point and committed to giving Turang some playing time at 3rd base, Weston Wilson stepped in to man shortstop for the first time in 2022. RHP Hobie Harris (season ERA 1.94) came into Game Two to strike out his only batter in the bottom of the 4th inning, stranding Jumbo Shrimp runners at second and third to prevent that game from getting out of hand. 1B Jon Singleton is a unique baseball player, walking four more times across the two games and knocking in two runs. His batting average is just .206, but he’s walked 95(!) times to give him a terrific .375 on-base percentage. He also has 19 home runs and 60 RBIs through 345 at-bats this year. Next week’s outlook: It’s a battle of first place titans, as Nashville (70-46) travels to take on 66-51 Durham (Rays’ AAA affiliate). Expect rehabbing RHP Adrian Houser to start the opening game, with RHP Marcus Walden (only one run allowed in last 11 innings) getting the lion’s share of the work. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Game One (Resumption) Final: Montgomery 12, Biloxi 2 Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Montgomery 5, Biloxi 4 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biscuits Walk-Off Shuckers in Series Finale Sunday’s opening game was a continuation of Saturday’s suspended demolition, in which Biloxi already trailed 11-2 in the top of the 5th inning. As such, there was little to play for, but at least RHP Carlos Luna (4 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) put in an effective shift. For the record, Montgomery scored 12 runs on 17 hits and also struck out 14 Shuckers in the one-sided contest. The teams got down to serious business in the follow-up game, which was originally planned as a 9-inning game but ended up finishing early. Presumably the teams agreed to shorten it during one of the day’s rain delays. Although the offense grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning, sparked by perhaps unexpected contributions from 2B Yeison Pena (1-for-3) and C Jason Lopez (2-for-3), starting RHP TJ Shook (3 2/3 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 0 Ks) couldn’t quite escape a two-on, nobody out 4th inning jam as he conceded a 3-run homer with his final pitch. The Shuckers didn’t give up, however, as 1B Zavier Warren (1-for-2, walk) singled and SS Cam Devanney (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBIs) smacked his 17th home run of the year (his first since July 30) to knot the contest at 4-4 in the top of the 6th inning. RHP Nash Walters struck out consecutive batters in the bottom of the 7th inning before conceding a pinch-hit double and walk-off single to end it. Biloxi’s two Sunday losses gave Montgomery a 4-2 series win. Three Quick Strikes (all stemming from Game Two): OF Corey Ray was in an 0-for-21 skid, but snapped it with an RBI single to tie the game 1-1 in the 3rd inning. However, he followed that up with a back-breaking ground ball double play with two-on, nobody out in the top of the 5th inning and a strikeout in the final frame. OF Terrence Doston collected two hits in the game, the latter a bunt single to lead off the top of the 7th inning. In a game of “howevers”, he was then caught stealing. RHPs Zach Vennaro and Harold Chirino (season ERA 3.45) were effective in middle relief, covering 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (56-56) returns home to face Reds’ AA affiliate Chattanooga (48-66). LHP Brandon Knarr (3.05 season ERA in High-A/AA) is scheduled to get the first crack at the Lookouts. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Cedar Rapids 7, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Kernels Homers Hurt Wisconsin Taking on a solid Cedar Rapids (68-46) squad is difficult, but doing it without OF Jackson Chourio and C Jeferson Quero (both resting for a few days after reported soreness) makes for very little margin for error. To their credit, Wisconsin battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the 1st inning, with 6th inning hits from 2B Antonio Pinero (1-for-3, double), OF Reidy Mercado (1-for-3, SB) and 3B Ben Metzinger (1-for-4, RBI, SB) enabling the Timber Rattlers to tie the game 2-2. Starting RHP Justin Jarvis (5 1/3 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 6 Ks) faced a lot of traffic in ultimately throwing 100 pitches, but did well to limit the Kernels to only two runs before exiting with one-on and one-out in the bottom of the 6th inning. However, RHP Joey Matulovich wasn’t able to provide much relief on this day, as he conceded two homers, a triple and two walks in that same 6th inning before exiting in favor of RHP Taylor Floyd with the Timber Rattlers down 7-2. The loss dropped Wisconsin to a 1-5 series defeat for the week. Three Quick Strikes: C Darrien Miller grabbed a run back with a solo homer in the top of the 8th inning, his 10th of the year. Floyd (2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) was again solid in relief, turning around what had been a challenging season in the initial months. He’s only conceded one run in his last seven appearances (15 1/3 innings). Striking out 15 times in 33 at-bats won’t get the job done on most days. Only Pinero and Mercado managed to avoid a K on Sunday, but each also batted one fewer time than their teammates. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (59-54) will face 46-68 Lansing (Athletics’ High-A affiliate) at home this week. Expect RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (season ERA 3.22 in Low-A/High-A) to start the opener, building on 9 Ks in a tough luck loss in his last outing. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 6, Fayetteville 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Hit Four Homers in Sweep Clinching Victory RHP Yujanyer Herrera (5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 3 Ks) had a terrific Low-A debut, overcoming a 1st inning run to keep Fayetteville scoreless over his remaining innings. Having just turned 19 years old on Wednesday, I’m sure that he only needs one or two more games like this to start climbing prospect lists. OF Hedbert Perez (2-for-3, HR, walk, RBI) smacked his 15th home run of the year to tie the game 1-1 in the 2nd inning before 3B Jadher Areinamo (1-for-3) singled and scored on a SS Robert Moore (2-for-4, RBI, SB) single in the 3rd inning to give Carolina its first lead. After a rain delay entering the 6th inning, RHP Miguel Guerrero came in to strike out the side in that frame before conceding a run on two hits in the 7th inning. Thankfully, the Mudcats responded to the challenge immediately, with DH/INF Alberis Ferrer (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) blasting a 2-run shot in the 7th inning to re-capture the lead 4-2, then 2B Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-4, HR, RBI) and 1B Jesus Chirinos (1-for-4, HR, RBI) each adding solo shots in the 8th inning. The victory completed a 6-0 series sweep for Carolina on the week. Three Quick Strikes: It was truly a day for exciting, young pitching prospects as fellow 19-year old RHP Jeison Pena (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) earned his first Low-A save with two shutout innings. Contributor @CheeseheadInQC highlighted in the forum that Herrera was only the second Brewer minor league pitcher in the last 16 years to make a Low-A debut in his “age 18 season”. I believe that the other was RHP Brailin Rodriguez in 2021, who’s unfortunately been injured throughout 2022. RHP Miguel Segura had been noted as the incoming 6th inning reliever, but didn’t actually face any batters. This was either due to the rain delay, the manager changing his mind or perhaps Segura didn’t feel quite right during his warm up. We’ll have to monitor this, as he’s not pitched since July 29. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (61-53) heads to Kannapolis (50-64) to battle the White Sox’s Low-A affiliate. Expect 2021 4th round draft pick RHP Logan Henderson to make his second start for Carolina, as he builds up strength following an injury and recent rehab work. 2. Carolina stormed back from an early deficit, ultimately plating ten runs in a satisfying victory. Wisconsin lost 1-0 despite limiting the opposition to a single hit. Biloxi’s offense was dormant in their loss, while Nashville was rained out. Hendry Mendez led the Mudcats’ heroics, giving them leads in the 4th and 7th innings, the latter on a monster bomb into the right field lights (see video below). Young Stiven Cruz was also outstanding in his debut for the Timber Rattlers, but the offense was unable to support him. Thursday’s Game Balls go the aforementioned Cruz and Mendez, as well as Eric Brown Jr., Jace Avina and Taylor Floyd. Transactions: C Jakson Reetz designated for assignment RHP J.C. Mejia reinstated from suspended list and optioned to AAA Nashville RHP Justin Bullock placed on High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Postponed (Rain): Make-up as part of August 21 doubleheader Via the Sounds’ website, postponement details: Sounds and Jumbo Shrimp Postponed in Jacksonville Nashville and Jacksonville will make up this game as part of a Sunday doubleheader. Friday’s outlook: It’s a Friday doubleheader (and an off day on Saturday). Expect RHP Dylan File (4.40 season ERA) and LHP Ethan Small (3.38 season ERA) to start the Friday contests, with Nashville hoping for a sweep of the day to claim a 3-1 series lead. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery 4, Biloxi 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Shuckers Shutout By Biscuits Starting RHP Victor Castaneda (5 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 2 WP, 9 Ks) had a rare off game, with an infield single in the 1st inning escalating into four consecutive hits to give the Biscuits an early 2-0 advantage. In the 4th inning, two walks and two strikeouts were followed by a clutch RBI double from the opposition, then a run-scoring wild pitch to complete the scoring. Castaneda still managed to strike out nine Biscuits on his 106-pitch day. Montgomery retired the final nine Shuckers in order in their fine 12-strikeout, shutout performance. Three Quick Strikes: RHPs Nash Walters (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) and Robbie Hitt (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) were solid in three scoreless, hitless relief innings, but the Shuckers offense was unmoved by their efforts. DH/OF Tristen Lutz (2-for-4) and OF Terence Doston (1-for-3) produced Biloxi’s only hits, all singles. Offensive maestro SS Andruw Monasterio (.956 OPS in AA ball this year) was absent for a second straight game, although I want to assume this is part of the same two-day rest strategy which saw 1B Thomas Dillard miss games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Friday’s outlook: Impressive LHP Robert Gasser (season ERA 3.90 in High-A/AA) is ready to make his third start for the Shuckers, who need a victory to knot the series at 2-2. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Cedar Rapids 1, Wisconsin 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Cedar Rapids Solo Homer Stops Wisconsin One could not possibly ask for a better High-A debut for 20-year-old RHP Stiven Cruz (6 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks), who conceded just one hit in six innings of work against a terrific Cedar Rapids squad which ran its season record to 66-45. The fatal blow (a solo homer to 2B Mikey Perez, his first in High-A after a promotion earlier this month) came on an 0-1 pitch to start off the bottom of the 5th inning. Cruz threw just 76 pitches (50 strikes) in his six excellent innings of work. Wisconsin outhit the Kernels three to one, as both offenses struggled on a day for the pitchers. On the bright side, the Timber Rattlers struck out only four times in their 32 plate appearances. The balls just weren’t landing for hits on this day. The Timber Rattlers managed to get 1B Ernesto Martinez (1-for-2, walk, SB) to third base on a single, stolen base and error with two outs in the 6th inning, but couldn’t bring him home. Their last baserunner came via a C Darrien Miller (0-for-3, walk) four-pitch walk with two outs in the 8th inning, but again nothing could come of it. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Taylor Floyd (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 5 Ks) is finally showing the 2021 form which put him on most of our prospect lists, striking out five of the seven batters he faced in a scoreless relief effort. Tangible opportunities were few and far between, with the Timber Rattlers going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position (five men left on base) and Cedar Rapids going 0-for-1 in that department (three men left on base). Thursday’s game saw the return of DH/1B/C Wes Clarke (0-for-3, walk), who’d been absent since July 30th. However, Martinez departed the game in the bottom of the 7th inning, thus giving us someone else’s health status to unfortunately worry about. Friday’s outlook: RHP Brady Schanuel (season ERA 3.76) is pegged to make his second-ever minor league start in what is presumably a bullpen game for a Wisconsin club which desperately needs a victory, down 3-0 in the series. Carolina Pre-Game Notes (not available via standard link) Final: Carolina 10, Fayetteville 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mendez and Brown Homer in 10-5 Victory This game looked like it may be lost in the top of the 1st inning, as Fayetteville jumped out to a 4-0 lead against starting RHP Edwin Jimenez (5 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 0 Ks), with five players reaching base in succession: single, walk, hit-by-pitch, 2-run single, double, sacrifice fly. To their credit, the Mudcats punched right back in an entertaining affair, producing two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 1st inning, including RBI singles from Outfielders Jace Avina (2-for-4, double, RBI) and Eduarqui Fernandez (1-for-3, walk, RBI). In the third inning, the Brewers’ 2022 first and second round draft picks teamed up to knot the game 4-4 via a SS Robert Moore walk and then DH/SS Eric Brown Jr.’s second homer since joining Carolina. 18-year-old OF Hendry Mendez (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs) then gave the Mudcats their first lead of the game at 5-4 via an RBI infield single in the bottom of the 4th inning and did it again at 6-5 with a towering first-pitch solo homer in the bottom of the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 8th inning, the floodgates finally opened, as Carolina brought in four runs on four singles (1B Jesus Chirinos, 2B Zack Raabe, 3B Branlyn Jaraba, Mendez) and a walk to put the game out of reach at 10-5. Three Quick Strikes: 19-year-old RHP Jeison Pena (2 IP, 0 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks) and 24-year-old LHP Leoni De La Cruz (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) were terrific in clamping down on the hot Woodpecker offense, striking out seven and conceding just one hit in four innings of scoreless relief work. Manager Victor Estevez appears to maximizing Mendez’s chance to return to the high level of play he’d demonstrated before a wall collision earlier this month and it certainly paid dividends with his clutch performance today. Is there a promotion to High-A Wisconsin looming in Mendez’s near future? The 23-year-old Raabe (1-for-4, RBI, no strikeouts) seems to be levelling off again. He’d started the season well (.736 OPS in 181 plate appearances), had a miserable middle stretch (.430 OPS in 79 plate appearances) and is now on a more respectable recent trend (.685 OPS over last 48 plate appearances). Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Vallecillo (season ERA 4.60 in ACL/Low-A) is scheduled to make his third start in Low-A ball, as Carolina hopes to clinch the series with a fourth consecutive win. ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Cancelled (Rain): ACL Brewers Blue vs. ACL Athletics (I assume this game will not be made up) This game had commenced, with LHP Brian Fitzpatrick (10th round draft pick) getting the start, but now the box score seems wholly unavailable online after it was apparently cancelled due to rain. Cancelled (Rain): ACL Brewers Gold vs. ACL Guardians (I assume this game will not be made up) This game had commenced, with RHP Tyler Wehrle (undrafted free agent signing) getting the start, but now the box score seems wholly unavailable online after it was apparently cancelled due to rain. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Final: DSL Brewers1 14, DSL Texas Red 8 Box Score / Game Log Brewers-1 didn’t let a 3-0 deficit in the 1st inning get them down, scoring 14 unanswered runs to dominate the game before generously allowing five runs to Texas in the final frame. The win improves Brewers-1’s record to 21-34. 17-year-old switch-hitting OF Luis Lara (4-for-4, HR, HBP, 3 RBIs, SB) was the star of the game, homering, scoring five runs, driving in three runs and reaching base in all five plate appearances. OF/INF Luis Watter (2-for-3, BB, HBP) reached base four times in a notable effort, while consistent producer C Edgardo Ordonez (1-for-4, double, 2 RBIs, - season OPS of .810) knocked in two runs with a double. The teams combined for 23 hits (13 for our young men) along with 13 errors (six for Brewers-1). Neither Lara, Ordonez nor Watter committed any of our errors, nor did OF Duncan Garcia (1-for-4, 2 RBIs) who instead threw out a runner at home. On the mound, let’s give credit to 17-year-old LHP Justin Caceres (3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 4 Ks) for his three innings of scoreless work. In the worrisome category, 1B Arnys Rodriguez was replaced after just two innings, having singled and scored before exiting. Hopefully it’s only a short-term challenge. Suspended after 5 ½ innings (Rain): DSL Brewers2 2, DSL Phillies White 1 (to be continued) Box Score / Game Log Starting 20-year-old RHP Jerel Vizcaino (3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) allowed more traffic than usual, but still battled and only yielded one run which was unearned. Fellow long-man 19-year-old RHP Dencer Geraldo (2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 WP, 0 K) then followed up with two scoreless innings. 3B Johan Barrios and OF Irving Igualas teamed up with two singles in the 4th inning to tie the game 1-1, then OF Reminton Batista doubled and scored on an Igualas RBI ground-out to give Brewers-2 its first lead in the top of the 6th inning, right before rains postponed the contest. Expect the game to be concluded on Saturday, August 20 as part of a quasi-doubleheader. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck on Friday to all teams, including doubleheaders for Nashville and DSL Brewers-2 (leading 9-5 in the 4th inning of an earlier suspended game)! 4. The Arizona Blue and Gold squads won two of three games on the day, but our youngsters in the Dominican came up empty. The Brewers received notable contributions from three recent draft picks. The pitching of Yujanyer Herrera led the day. At the plate, Ernesto Martinez (grand slam), Jhonnys Cabrera, and Luke Adams (first as a Brewer) each homered, Gregory Barrios collected four hits across two games, and Quinton Low reached base five times in his one game. Transactions: N/A ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Brewers Blue 16, ACL Guardians 3 Box Score / Game Log This blowout win boosts ACL Brewers Blue’s record to 18-30. After drawing a 1st inning walk, rehabbing DH/1B, Ernesto Martinez (1-for-2, HR, 2 walks, 4 RBIs) went big in the 2nd inning, smacking a 2-out grand slam to extend Blue’s lead to 6-0 and essentially put the game away. Blue led by as much as 12-0 and 14-1, as the club also received a dominant start from 18-year-old RHP Yujanyer Herrera (5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks). The 14-hit, 10-walk offensive feast helped many prospects boost their numbers, with 1B/RHP Quinton Low (2-for-3, double, 2 walks, HBP) reaching base five times, C Tayden Hall (2-for-5, double, walk, 2 RBIs) three times and returned-from-injury 3B Ney Serrano (1-for-4, 2 walks) three times as well. Lightly-used DH/C Jhonnys Cabrera further contributed to his Jon Singleton-esque statline by hitting a 2-run homer in the 7th inning. He now has a slash line of .205 AVG / .407 OBP / .364 in 59 plate appearances. SS Jheremy Vargas exited in the 3rd inning of the game, so this will be something to monitor going forward. Hall also allowed three passed balls, although at least there were no stolen bases against him. Game One Final: ACL Cubs 6, ACL Brewers Gold 2 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Cubs 2 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log The doubleheader split leaves ACL Brewers Gold with a 27-21 record. In the opener, recent 6th round draft pick RHP Tyler Woessner (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 Ks) was impressive in his start, striking out five Cubs in two scoreless innings. Is a call-up to Low-A Carolina in his near future? Unfortunately, 2021 draft pick 18-year-old 6’6” LHP Caden Vire continues to show rust after a recent long lay-off, retiring only one of six batters while giving up five runs, three walks, two hits, and issuing two wild pitches. We may need to take the long view with Mr. Vire and trust the organization’s development plan. 2021 super international signing 18-year-old DH/SS Gregory Barrios (2-for-4, double, 2 RBIs) knocked in both of Gold’s runs, while 18-year-old 2022 draftee (3rd round) SS Dylan O’Rae (1-for-2, 2 walks, 2 SBs) reached base three times and 19-year old 2B Miguel Briceno (1-for-3, double – his OPS in ACL ball is .881) continues to produce. 19-year-old LHP Fraudy Maldonado (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) and 23-year-old LHP Jakob Brustoski (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 WP, 1 K) also merit positive notes for combining on three shutout innings. The Gold men grabbed some revenge in the day's second game, taking a 3-1 lead with three runs in the 4th inning, then adding two helpful insurance runs in the final frame. 2022 draftee (12th round) 18-year-old 1B/3B Luke Adams (2-for-3, HR, walk, RBI, SB) was a crucial cog in the offense, smacking his first home run in the organization to lead off the 4th inning. SS Barrios (2-for-4, 2 SBs) and OF Eduarh Colina (2-for-3) also collected two hits each. The pitching staff struck out 12 Cubs in seven innings and issued seven walks. Although starting 19-year-old, RHP Henrison Mota struck out five Cubs (versus four walks) in 2 2/3 innings, 19-year-old RHP Delson Guzman (2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) probably had the more interesting line by retiring six of the eight batters he faced to earn the save. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE DSL Texas Blue 7, DSL Brewers1 4 Box Score / Game Log Monday’s loss drops DSL Brewers-1’s record to 19-32. This game will serve as a rare blip for 18-year-old LHP Osbriel Mogollon (5 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 1 BB, Ks), who’s been lights out for most of the year but took the loss here. On the bright side, he only issued one walk, had no wild pitches, didn’t balk or hit a batter, and didn’t allow long balls. The box score tells the story of the offensive struggles of the club, with only two OPSs above .700: C Edgardo Ordonez (1-for-3 – season OPS of .817) and OF Luis Lara (1-for-3, double, walk–season OPS of .720). DH/INF Jose Pena (3-for-4, double, 2 RBIs – season OPS of .453) collected three hits, and 3B/OF Luis Watter (2-for-4 – season OPS of .611) grabbed another two hits. Down 5-2 and 5-3, the team had three runners thrown out on the bases in the 6th and 7th innings to hurt their cause. DSL Phillies Red 2, DSL Brewers2 1 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log The close defeat leaves DSL Brewers-2 at 24-27 this year. The club managed to out-hit the Phillies 6-3 but couldn’t collect key hits while missing their primary offensive weapon (1B/OF Yeison Perez), going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position (though the Phillies were also 0-for-6 with RISP). The team fell behind 1-0 in the 2nd inning without giving up a hit (walk, wild pitch, stolen base, partially successful double steal), but grabbed a tie in the 3rd inning when 2B Demetrio Nadal (1-for-2, triple, HBP) tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the Phillies responded in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a triple and scored on an error to produce what proved to be the winning run. All in all, the pitching staff of 18-year-old RHP Daurys Mora, 17-year-old LHP Jose Meneses, and 20-year-old RHP Waldin Rodriguez was solid in limiting the opposition to just three hits in six innings of work, although the six walks, one hit-by-pitch and one wild pitch also merit mention. They combined to strike out five batters. The box score OPSs look slightly better here. However, it’s still relatively unsightly on the whole: C Eric Martinez (1-for-3 – season OPS of .855), SS Juan Baez (1-for-2, walk, SB – season OPS of .727), 3B Johan Barrios (1-for-3 – season OPS of .720) and the aforementioned Nadal at .710. 6. Great write-up. Thanks for this. I hope we’re able to agree mutual re-ups with Herb, Oteto and Erceg, so they can continue their progression with an organization that seems to understand and believe in them. I assume Zack Brown is at the stage in his career where he could sign a new minor league contract with spring training invite with a new club every season until his true MLB shot comes.
  7. Wisconsin held on for a hard-won series victory, led by a Chourio masterpiece. Biloxi withstood three consecutive homers in a comeback victory. Nashville and Carolina unfortunately gave up late leads in tough losses. Sunday’s Game Balls go to Jackson Chourio, Marcus Walden, Tristen Lutz, Corey Ray and Nick Bennett, with an honorable mention to Garrett Whitley. Transactions: N/A Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Gwinnett 5, Nashville 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Sunk by Stripers After Late Letdown Given their first-place standing, terrific performance all year and the advantage of playing at home, the Sounds appeared to have this game in hand up 3-0 entering the 8th inning, only to give up a shocking 5-spot and fall 5-3. The loss ensured a 3-3 series split with Gwinnett for the week. Starting RHP Marcus Walden (5 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 8 Ks) had his best outing of the year, while SS Brice Turang (2-for-3, walk, RBI) knocked in the game’s opening run on an RBI single in the 3rd inning. The trouble started in RHP Justin Topa’s (1 2/3 IP, 2 ER) second inning of work and continued with RHP Trevor Kelly (1/3 IP, 3 ER – season ERA balloons to 2.00) unable to put out the flames, with all the damage occurring with two outs – five runs on six consecutive singles. Three Quick Strikes: 3B Weston Wilson (1-for-3, double, sac fly, RBI), OF Joey Wiemer (1-for-4, double) and Matt Lipka (1-for-3, double, RBI) each doubled as the team built that 3-0 lead, while leadoff DH/OF Sal Frelick continued his amazing month by reaching base twice (1-for-3, walk – his AAA OPS is now .981). RHP Hobie Harris (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks – season ERA of 1.96) pitched a clean 9th inning to give Nashville a final chance, but the offense was unable to re-start as Gwinnett retired the final 10 Sounds in order. Once-heralded and still-grinding 27-year old RHP Zach Brown (1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) pitched a clean 6th inning to lower his season ERA to 3.08 as he builds his resume for potential future MLB relief work. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (66-44) hits the road to take on 60-51 Jacksonville (Marlins’ AAA affiliate). Rehabbing RHP Adrian Houser is expected to start Game One of the series. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Rocket City 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi Rallies To Claim Series Finale LHP Nick Bennett (6 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) faced just 17 batters while sailing through a scoreless initial five innings, before the wheels suddenly jammed as the Trash Pandas went back-to-back-to-back with three consecutive homers to lead off the top of the 6th inning. Of course, to Bennett’s credit, he recovered to finish the inning with no further damage and his team only down 3-2. That initial Shucker lead came courtesy of a 1st inning OF Corey Ray (2-for-3, HR, HBP, RBI) leadoff homer, then OF Garrett Whitley (2-for-4, double, 2 RBIs) singling and scoring on a DH/OF Tristen Lutz (2-for-3, double, walk, 3 RBIs) single in the 4th inning. Unlike the aforementioned Sounds’ game, Biloxi’s offense was able to immediately get back into gear, with Ray and SS Andruw Monsterio (1-for-4, RBI) singling and both scoring on a Whitley double to re-claim the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the 6th inning. After RHP Robbie Hitt allowed a run to tie it up again, 2B Yeison Coca (1-for-3, walk) walked and scored on a groundout to grab a 5-4 advantage, then Lutz doubled in two more runs to provide a 7-4 cushion in the bottom of the 7th inning. By winning both weekend games, Biloxi was able to grab a 3-3 series tie for the week. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Nash Walters (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) continued his notable 2022 resurgence by getting the final four outs of the game and earn his first save of the year. 3B Cam Devanney is in a bit of a slump (0-for-4 in this game, 6-for-43 in August), although this writer still believes in him after his amazing first four months of 2022. It’s honestly good to see old friend 27-year old 1B/OF Ryan Aguilar (.889 season OPS; 13th homer of the year in this game) playing regularly and playing well for Rocket City. He was an intriguing prospect given the amount of center field time the Brewers’ gave him before his nightmare 2021 campaign which led to his exit. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (54-52) goes on the road to face 53-48 Montgomery (Rays’ AA affiliate). RHP TJ Shook (3.86 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 10.0 K/9 in 98 High-A/AA innings) is scheduled to get the first crack at the Biscuits. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 5, South Bend 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Brewers' Chourio homers on four-hit day Don’t miss the terrific video highlights put together by the Rattlers’ media team: Wisconsin’s offense came through early to give their tired staff much-needed support, as a leadoff C Darrien Miller walk was followed by OF Jackson Chourio annihilating a 3-0 pitch for his 4th homer as a Timber Rattler (and his 16th of the year) for a 2-0 lead. Chourio was something of a one-man wrecking crew, going 4-for-4 in the game with 2 RBIs. Tied 2-2 in the 3rd inning, Miller and Chourio again led the charge, walking and singling with one out, then scoring on RBI singles by C Jeferson Quero (2-for-4, RBI) and SS Eduardo Garcia (2-for-4, RBI). A wild pitch added another run for a 5-2 advantage. Facing the Cubs for the second time in six days, RHP Israel Puello (3 1/3 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 6 BB, 2 Ks) again struggled, walking batters each and every inning, including the last three hitters he faced. Thankfully, RHP Christian Tripp (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) managed to strand two of three inherited runners to limit the damage and exit the frame up 5-3. From there, it wasn’t easy, but RHPs Taylor Floyd (2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and James Meeker (2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K) managed to battle through traffic to pitch four shutout innings, giving Meeker his 11th save of the year. South Bend actually has men on 2nd and 3rd base with one out in the top of the 9th inning before Meeker delivered a full-count strikeout and then induced a line out to left field to end the win, giving the Timber Rattlers a hard-earned 4-2 series victory. Three Quick Strikes: After Puello’s rough Tuesday outing (3 2/3 IP, 7 ER), I’d imagine that Manager Joe Ayrault wanted to give him a full week of rest, but that theoretical plan (if it existed) needed to be shelved after the team was forced into a bullpen game on Saturday (given RHP Justin Bullock’s absence). Both teams were generous in their own way in this game, with the Cubs going 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position, while the Timber Rattlers allowed four Cubs’ stolen bases with zero caught stealing. For the second straight game, Miller (0-for-2, 3 BB) walked three times in the leadoff spot, so it’s a safe bet he’ll continue in the role. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (58-49) travels to battle 63-45 Cedar Rapids (Twins’ High-A affiliate) this week. RHP Justin Jarvis (3.74 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 10.0 K/9 in 110 2/2 innings) is expected to start the opener. Carolina Pre-Game Notes (not available) Final: Delmarva 3, Carolina 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Wastes Early Lead in Series Splitting Loss Starting RHP Fernando Olguin (5 IP, 2 R, 10 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) had kept a zero on the board in spite of giving up a hit in each of the first five innings, before his fortune ran out in the bottom of the 6th inning. By contrast, both initial Carolina runs (2nd and 5th inning) were produced without the benefit of a hit, as they were actually outhit 13-5 in the contest. Of course, the Mudcats did walk six times and get hit by a pitch, but they’ll rue their 0-for-7 output with runners in scoring position. That fateful 6th inning went single, triple, single before RHP Miguel Guerrero (2 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) entered in relief. Three Shorebird singles off Guerrero in the 7th inning gave them the only lead they would ever need in claiming a come-from-behind win to knot the series 3-3. Three Quick Strikes: 19-year old RHP Jeison Pena (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K – lowering season ERA to 3.38 in ACL/Low-A) pitched a scoreless 8th inning to give his teammates a chance to tie it up, but unfortunately Delmarva retired the Mudcat hitters in order in the 9th inning. 2B Jadher Areinamo (2-for-4, SB) and DH/SS Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-3, double, walk) each reached base twice to lead the Mudcat offense, although each were also caught stealing. OF Hendry Mendez exited the game in the bottom of the 6th inning. Let’s hope this was a scheduled time-share with OF Jace Avina as part of Mendez’ re-introduction to action after a recent injury. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (55-53) returns home to face 47-60 Fayetteville (Astros’ Low-A affiliate). Expect RHP Jeferson Figueroa to start the series opener, still looking for his first organizational win. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck on Monday DSL/ACL squads! 9. The Nashville, Biloxi and Wisconsin bullpens were dominant in Wednesday’s victories, retiring the final 11, 11 and 9 batters of their games, respectively. Carolina also led 4-0 before rain halted action in the 5th inning. Wednesday’s Game Balls go to Corey Ray, Tyler Herb, Garrett Whitley, Justin Jarvis and Stiven Cruz, with Honorable Mentions to Robbie Baker, Jesus Chirinos and Brice Turang. Transactions: Signed underdrafted free agent RHP Jonathan Beymer (Campbell University) – per post by @ARobsBrewCrew: “He is a 6’2” 180 lb. right-handed pitcher that has spent the majority of his collegiate career as a reliever. Soon-to-be 24-years-old, Beymer has seen something click this summer between two wood-bat league teams after struggling with Campbell the past two seasons.” Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 2, Gwinnett 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Hold Off Stripers in Series Opener SS Brice Turang ’s (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) two-run homer in the bottom of the 1st inning gave Nashville a 2-1 lead, which held up throughout the rest of the night. Leadoff man OF Sal Frelick (1-for-2, triple, walk) had tripled to get the Sounds off on a good note. Starting RHP Tyler Herb (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 8 Ks) went five strong innings to continue his recent good form, before four relievers kept Gwinnett hitless over the final four innings, including retiring the final 11 Stripers of the contest in order. Nashville’s offense had ample opportunities (1-for-12 with runners in scoring position; 10 left-on-base), while Gwinnett mustered nothing (0-for-2 with RISP; 4 left-on-base). Three Quick Strikes: Each of RHPs Jake Cousins (2 Ks, 1 BB), Peter Strzelecki (2 Ks), Trevor Kelley (1 K) and Luis Perdomo (3rd save) covered one scoreless inning, retiring 12 of the 13 batters they faced. Turang’s blast extended his hitting streak to 17 games and on-base streak to 24 games, while 3B Pablo Reyes (2-for-4) now has a 22-game on-base streak. The balls aren’t falling in for OF Esteury Ruiz (.200 average and .554 OPS since joining Nashville in the Hader trade), so he bunted for a hit in the 5th inning. Thursday’s outlook: Rehabbing major leaguer RHP Adrian Houser is the scheduled starter for one of Nashville’s Thursday home games. Expect RHP Caleb Boushley (11-2 record, 3.62 season ERA) to get the call in the second game. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 6, Rocket City 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Ray's Four-Hit Game Boosts Shuckers In 6-5 Win OF Corey Ray (4-for-5, HR, double, 2 RBIs) has re-acclimated quickly to life in Biloxi, boosting his 2022 AA OPS to 1.266 through six games. He doubled on the first pitch of the bottom of the 1st inning, then scored on an OF Garrett Whitley double. 1B Thomas Dillard and OF Terence Doston both singled and scored in the 2nd inning to extend the Shuckers’ lead to 3-0, before Ray produced his third hit of the game in the 4th inning, pulling a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall for two more runs. Whitley (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, 2 RBIs) then followed with a solo home run of his own to give Biloxi starting RHP TJ Shook a 6-1 lead. That gives Whitley homers on consecutive nights. Four runs off Shook in the middle innings tightened the game at 6-5, but the bullpen of Kent Hasler (1 2/3 IP), Nash Walters (1 IP, 2 Ks) and Harold Chirin o (1 IP, 2 Ks, second save) were up to the task, retiring all 11 batters they faced, the last on Ray’s diving catch in center field. Biloxi’s victory evened their series with Rocket City at one game apiece. Three Quick Strikes: Shook (5 1/3 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 5 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 5 Ks) was strong through 87 pitches, but the final three were a ball to finish a 10-pitch walk, then a double and a 3-run homer. I’ll give lightly-used C Nick Kahle another mention here: 1-for-2, walk, sac fly, RBI, run scored. The additions of the highly experienced SS Andruw Monasterio (25), Ray (27) and Whitley (25) seem to have sufficiently offset the promotions of Wiemer, Frelick and Mitchell to AAA Nashville. Thursday’s outlook: Exciting LHP Robert Gasser will start Thursday’s Shucker home game, aiming to replicate his terrific last outing (5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks). Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 6, South Bend 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Chourio Homers in Wisconsin Victory Over Cubs Here are excellent video highlights from the Rattlers’ solid media team: OF Jackson Chourio gave Wisconsin an early lift, blasting a 107mph rocket over the left field wall to stake Wisconsin to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. Two uncharacteristic Joe Gray Jr. errors couldn’t derail starting RHP Justin Jarvis’s (6 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 4 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks) excellent form, though they did allow the lucky Cubs to tie the game 2-2 by the top of the 3rd inning. After re-taking the lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Jarvis and RHP Robbie Baker (3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) locked down the South Bend offense from there. In fact, Baker didn’t allow a baserunner over the final three innings to earn a deserved save (his 2nd of the year). Recent 7th round draft pick 3B Ben Metzinger (1-for-3, walk, RBI) notched his first hit with the club in the 7th inning on a full-count line drive to the opposite field, then scored as part of a two-run inning to give Wisconsin a 6-2 lead. Recently-promoted 19-year old DH/C Jeferson Quero also logged his first High-A ball hit in this game. In a theme across Wednesday’s games, Wisconsin won despite its offense going 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranding nine baserunners. By contrast, South Bend’s opportunities were few and far between, as they went 0-for-4 with RISP and stranded only five baserunners. Three Quick Strikes: Jarvis obviously showed no ill effects from his last start, when he was pulled in the 1st inning after two walks and a bunch of bad luck (e.g. errors, infield singles). With OF Arbert Cipion and SS Eduardo Garcia both exiting the game early after being hit-by-pitches, Manager Joe Ayrault’s bench was likely empty. Officially, Wes Clarke and Ashton McGee are active, but Clarke’s not played since July 30 and McGee since August 2. Hopefully all four players are in fact healthy and the exits of Cipion and Garcia were simply precautionary. C Darrien Miller had a rare opportunity to lead off for the team in this game and played the part nicely: 0-for-2 with 3 walks and an RBI. Thursday’s outlook: 20-year old RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (3.35 season ERA) is due to make his 2nd-ever start in High-A ball in their home game against South Bend. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Rain Delay After 4 ½ innings: Carolina 4, Delmarva 0 (to be continued on Thursday) Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats and Shorebirds Suspended Due to Rain The only thing which could slow down RHP Stiven Cruz (4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) in this game was rain. In fact, the rain stopped everything and everyone in their tracks. Before the postponement, 1B Jesus Chirinos and 2B Robert Moore had combined for three doubles, driving in four runs. Thus, the Chirinos and Moore show (with special contributions from the Carolina bullpen and other Mudcats) will continue Thursday as part of a pseudo-doubleheader, including the final 4 ½ innings of Wednesday’s game and then a 7-inning game to follow. Thursday’s outlook: After completing the remaining 4 ½ innings of Wednesday’s contest, RHP Edwin Jimenez (4.33 season ERA) is expected to start the second game, a 7-inning affair. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Final: DSL Phillies White 5, DSL Brewers1 3 (two extra innings beyond planned 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log The close defeat drops DSL Brewers-1’s record to 18-30 on the season. Starting LHP Wande Torres (4 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 1 balk, 4 Ks) limited the Phillies to one run on one hit, though he won’t be happy with his five walks. Reliever RHP Hamlet Vasquez (4 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 H, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 4 Ks) also put in a solid shift. A C Edgardo Ordonez (2-for-4, RBI) single and SS Angel Pereira (1-for-2, triple, walk, RBI, SB) triple helped stake the Brewers to a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning, which nearly held up. However, the Brewer’s 2-1 advantage evaporated via a Phillies’ RBI single with two outs in the final scheduled (7th) inning. The Phillies then scored Manfred’s Ghost in the 8th inning without registering a hit, but Ordonez kept the Brewers in the game with a tying RBI double. The Phillies then scored on a bunt-plus-error to start the 9th inning and also added a sacrifice fly for the final margin. A bit of good news: Slumping OF Luis Lara showed some signs of life: 1-for-2, 2 walks. Final: DSL Brewers2 4, DSL Texas Red 3 Box Score / Game Log The win boosts Brewers-2's season record back above .500 to 24-23. Although there was eventually some 9th inning drama, this was definitely not a game for the fan, as the teams combined to go 0-for-21 with runners in scoring position and strand 22 baserunners. In fact, the patient Brewers-2 hitters walked 14 times and were beaned three times in this game, yet somehow only produced four runs, all in the 2nd inning. Well, the team producing just three hits in 29 at-bats explains the “somehow”. Perhaps the Brewer offense was deflated by having its best player 1B Yeison Perez (0-for-0, walk, 2 HBPs, RBI) exit the game early after being hit by pitches twice in the first four innings. Each of starting LHP Anthony Flores (4 IP, 1 ER, 3Ks), LHP David Dominguez (3 IP, 1 ER, 4 Ks) and RHP Roman Perez (2 IP, 0 R, 1 K) were effective in this game. Nonetheless, Texas chipped away at the 4-0 Brewers’ advantage, getting to within 4-3 by the 7th inning. However, in the 9th inning, two walks gave Texas a golden two-on, one-out opportunity, which the Brewer defense extinguished via a game-ending pop out double play (in foul territory, no less). We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck on Thursday to all teams! And a personal thank you to @Joseph Zarr for swapping days with me – Joseph actually has 10 games to cover now (sorry!), as all teams are in action, with Carolina and Nashville playing doubleheaders. 11. Nashville scored five runs in the 8th inning to take the lead and win their series. Biloxi held on to grab a fifth win in six games. Wisconsin couldn’t quite pull off a comeback. Carolina had seven extra-base hits in their series-clinching win. Sunday’s Game Balls go to Pablo Reyes, Victor Castaneda, Thomas Dillard, Jace Avina and Ethan Small, with Honorable Mentions to Jeferson Quero, Garrett Mitchell and Arbert Cipion. Transactions: RHP Jason Alexander recalled to MLB Milwaukee from AAA Nashville (replacing DFA’d Jake McGee) OF/INF Noah Campbell transferred from AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list to 60-day injured list There are also rumors of potential upcoming moves, so watch the wire (e.g. this Brewer Fanatic thread) on Monday and Tuesday Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 9, Norfolk 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Steal Series With Reyes' Four-Hit Day Pablo Reyes remains “Mr. Steady” for Nashville, extending his on-base streak to 21 games and leading the team to a 4-2 series win. With Brice Turang getting a day off, Reyes manned shortstop and went 4-for-6, with a home run and 4 RBIs. Starting LHP Ethan Small’s numbers were solid (5 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 8 Ks), although he exited after five innings (85 pitches) trailing 3-2. Down 4-3 going into the top of the 8th inning, INF/OF Weston Wilson homered to lead off the inning (his 9th of the year) and OF Matt Lipka (1-for-3, double, 2 walks, 3 SB) walked, stole two bases and scored on an error to grab the lead. An OF Garrett Mitchell (3-for-6, RBI, SB) infield single produced another run before Reyes’ 2-run homer extended the lead to 8-4. Good Baseball is when your opponent throws six wild pitches, commits two errors, has a balk, a passed ball and hits a batter, while the Nashville Sounds committed zero such infractions in this game. The win gave the Sounds a 4-2 series win over Norfolk for the week. Although Reyes may have had the big game, in prospect land it’s Mitchell who gets the highlight reel: Three Quick Strikes: OF Joey Wiemer, unfortunately, left the game in the top of the 6th inning. He’d fouled a ball off his leg, completed the plate appearance by drawing a walk, but was replaced on the bases by OF Sal Frelick C Jakson Reetz and OF Esteury Ruiz both had days to forget, combining to go 0-for-9 with 5 strikeouts and stranding 12 baserunners in their plate appearances, although Ruiz did draw a walk and deliver a sacrifice bunt The MLB rehab tour continued with RHPs JC Mejia (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K) and Justin Topa (2/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K) covering some middle innings, although I’m more interested in RHP Hobie Harris (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) continuing to roll and RHP Lucas Erceg (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K) successfully pounding the zone to induce three groundouts Next week’s outlook: Nashville (63-41) returns home to take on 50-55 Gwinnett (Braves’ AAA affiliate). RHP Caleb Boushley (3.62 ERA, 1.23 WHIP in 104 1/3 IP) is expected to start Game One of the series. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes (link not working when I checked) Final: Biloxi 6, Mississippi 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Dillard's Three-Hit Afternoon Helps Propel Shuckers to Series Finale Win 1B Thomas Dillard (3-for-4, two doubles, 2 RBIs) got the party started early with a 2-run double in the 1st inning for a 2-0 lead, producing three of the Shuckers’ ten hits in the game. Starting RHP Victor Castaneda (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) was fresh after not pitching for seven days, earning his second win of the season, dropping his ERA to 3.87 and exiting with a 5-1 lead. Things got nervous when Mississippi scored one in the 7th inning and three in the 8th inning to make it a one-run game, but RHP Harold Chirino (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) came in to escape the 8th inning and pitch a 3-up, 3-down 9th inning for his first save of the year. The victory gave Biloxi a 5-1 series win over Mississippi for the week. Three Quick Strikes: Multi-hit games actually abounded: SS Andruw Monasterio (2-for-5), OF Tristen Lutz (2-for-4, RBI), DH/INF Felix Valerio (2-for-4, RBI) The inconsistency of the Biloxi bullpen night-to-night is a head-scratcher, perhaps best exemplified by RHP Robbie Hitt having a second straight difficult game after an exceptional outing on July 31 Former 4th round pick C Nick Kahle (1-for-4; just 38 plate appearances this year) is still just 24 years old and has never repeated a minor league level, so let’s tip our cap to his resilience and hope that he gets more opportunities next year. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (51-49) returns home to take on 58-44 Rocket City (Angels’ AA affiliate). LHP Nick Bennett is listed as the expected starter for the series opener, aiming for a fourth straight solid outing (1.50 ERA with 20 Ks in last 18 innings pitched). Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Quad Cities 7, Wisconsin 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Bandits Big Inning Steals One from Wisconsin For the second time in less than a week, the Timber Rattlers’ bullpen was called upon very early and it once again didn’t go well. Starting RHP Justin Bullock (3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K) exited after three innings, with RHPs Christian Tripp (2 ER) and Joey Matulovich (3 ER) then conceding a five-run 6th inning to turn a 3-2 lead into a 7-3 deficit. Of course, the Timber Rattlers still made Quad Cities work hard for the victory, with OF Arbert Cipion (2-for-3, double, walk, 2 RBIs) and Joe Gray Jr. (2-for-3, double, SF, RBI) in particular putting the River Bandits under pressure. Cipion doubled and scored as part of a two-run 7th inning to cut the gap to 7-5. Gray doubled to lead off the 8th inning and Cipion walked to start the 9th inning, but both were stranded as the Rattlers could get no closer. Despite the loss, Wisconsin still won the series over Quad Cities 4-2. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Taylor Floyd (2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 3 Ks) had to throw 48 pitches (just 23 strikes) to get through 2 1/3 innings, but still managed to keep the River Bandits off the board C Darrien Miller ’s struggles against base stealers continued, with Quad Cities going 3-for-3 in the game. Of course, the team is exponentially better-placed to rate other aspects of Miller’s defense (e.g. game management, pitch framing), while Miller always finds ways to contribute offensively (e.g. earning three walks in this game) With Bullock leaving this game early and LHP Russell Smith going on the injured list earlier in the week, the Brewers may look to promote one or more of the many terrific candidates available in Low-A Carolina (e.g. Alexander Cornielle, Stiven Cruz, Miguel Guerrero, Michele Vassalotti, Karlos Morales, Pablo Garabitos, Brannon Jordan …) Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (54-47) will be home this week against 57-45 West Bend (Cubs’ High-A affiliate). Expect RHP Israel Puello (5.05 season ERA, though with 88 strikeouts against 33 walks in 82 innings pitched) to start Game One of the series. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 9, Kannapolis 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Clubs Two Homers in 9-6 Finale Victory When 1B Jesus Chirinos tied the game at 5-5 in the 5th inning with a 2-run blast (his ninth of the year and third of the series), Mudcat manager Victor Estevez had to rightfully feel pretty confident about the ensuing Battle of the Bullpens, given Carolina’s strength in this area. True to form, Carolina outscored the Cannon Ballers 4-1 the rest of the way, with all four runs coming in the 6th inning. 3B Luis Silva (2-for-4, 2 doubles), doubled and scored on a 2B Jheremy Vargas (1-for-2, 2 walks, RBI) single, then DH/C Jeferson Quero (3-for-3, double, walk, RBI) walked and OF Jace Avina (2-for-5, HR, triple, 3 RBIs) smashed his third homer in two games, a 3-run shot to grow the lead to 9-5. The Sunday victory gave Carolina a 4-2 series win over Kannapolis for the week. Four Quick Strikes: Starting RHP Fernando Olguin (5 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 balk, 5 Ks) struggled a bit in this game to grow his season ERA to 5.29, but he’s still just 21 years old and this is his first season of full season ball RHP Junior Montero, LHP Leoni De La Cruz and RHP Brannon Jordan combined to pitch 4 innings, conceding one run on one hit, walking five (oops), but striking out six (great) Every Carolina starter notched at least one hit in the game. OF Eduarqui Fernandez (double, HBP) and SS Jadher Areinamo (single, walk) each reached base twice Quero was actually pinch-hit for in the 8th inning, but I want to believe this had more to do with the Mudcats’ 9-6 lead and strong bullpen Next week’s outlook: Carolina (52-50) goes on the road to face 34-67 Delmarva (Orioles’ Low-A affiliate). Expect RHP Jeferson Figueroa (6 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 7K performance in last outing) to start the series opener, still looking for his first organizational win. 13. Sending Sheets out there to wreck his arm on September 27, 2008 was crazy. I really appreciated his guts though and I’m sure his teammates did too; just dumb management though, with a sadly predictable outcome. Similar to old Jordan playing that game against the Lakers whilst already nursing an injury in 2002 and Jeter playing that fateful extra inning playoff game in 2012 against the Tigers on an already-sore left ankle. Teams are more prudent now about managing their injured players, which is incredibly necessary for lower-budget organizations.
  14. Excellent Sounds’ pitching limited Norfolk to three hits in their win. The Shuckers and Timber Rattlers fell behind by wide margins and couldn’t complete their comebacks. Mudcat pitchers struck out 17 Cannon Ballers in their win. Thursday’s Game Balls go to Jesus Chirinos, Edwin Jimenez, Dylan File, Zavier Warren, and Jon Singleton, with apologies to Corey Ray. Transactions: C Mario Feliciano recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (replacing injured C Omar Narvaez) C Jakson Reetz had his contract selected by MLB Brewers and was optioned to AAA Nashville OF Corey Ray assigned to AA Biloxi from AAA Nashville RHP Luke Barker released (he’d recently been DFA’d and will undergo Tommy John surgery) RHP Mason Vinyard has been signed as an undrafted free agent out of Western Kentucky University. Six errors by the Tides, including two in the first inning, helped Nashville’s cause. A Singleton double and 3B Pablo Reyes (1-for-4, RBI) sacrifice fly staked File to a 3-0 first inning lead. Most of the way, the game was 3-2 until the Sounds tacked on three runs on five hits and two Tides’ errors in the 9th inning. Three Quick Strikes: The bullpen of Jake Cousins, Luis Perdomo, and Trevor Kelley (combined 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) pitched three shutout innings to remind Brewers’ brass perhaps that there are some solid bullpen options just a level away. Sal Frelick (2-for-4, double, walk) continues to bat leadoff and mash, with a .467 average and 1.129 OPS in his small AAA sample. Esteury Ruiz only managed a 1-for-5 day, but nearly every at-bat was excellent as he had an RBI double and did not strike out. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Mississippi 9, Biloxi 4 • Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: M-Braves Big Inning Downs Shuckers In 9-4 Defeat Starting LHP Brandon Knarr (4 2/3 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 5 BB, 2 Ks) struggled in this one, as a 2-0 deficit ballooned to 7-0 in the 5th inning. However, the Shuckers rallied to cut the deficit to 7-4, including a solo homer by Biloxi returnee OF Corey Ray (3-for-5, HR, double, RBI) and a 2-run triple by OF Garrett Whitley (1-for-4, triple, walk, 2 RBIs) but could get no closer. Three Quick Strikes: The Shuckers made the Braves sweat in the 8th inning, plating three runs and loading the bases for DH Brock Holt. Down 7-4 and representing the potential game-winning run, Holt battled the Braves’ reliever in a 13-pitch at-bat, which unfortunately ended with a fly out Major leaguer JC Mejia faced just two batters (throwing eight pitches) in his first rehab outing, getting a fly out and a strike out to strand an inherited runner in the 6th inning SS Andruw Monasterio (2-for-3, walk, hit-by-pitch) and RHP Kent Hasler (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) also had notable contributions Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Quad Cities 9, Wisconsin 6 • Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Bandits Beat Rattlers 9-6 Some early bad luck saw Wisconsin starting RHP Justin Jarvis pulled after 36 pitches, two outs, and two unearned runs in the 1st inning, with the River Bandits then feasting on a Wisconsin bullpen, suddenly put into action. RHP Joey Matulovich (2 IP, 6 R (5 ER), 6 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) bore the brunt of the pain, unfortunately, while RHP Brady Schanuel (3 1/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) put in an effective shift. The game was 8-2 by the 3rd inning, though the Timber Rattlers battled back to 8-5 by the 5th inning, with OF Jackson Chourio (1-for-3, double, 2 walks) and 3B Zavier Warren (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, 2 RBIs) both doubling in the inning. The Timber Rattlers’ last great chance came with two-on and two-out in the top of the 7th inning, down 9-6. However, newcomer OF Reidy Mercado grounded out to end the opportunity. Three Quick Strikes: Hopefully, Jarvis has no injury concern, and the early hook was simply a conservative move. He didn’t allow a single ball to the outfield to his credit, inducing four infield grounders, striking out one batter, and conceding two walks. Leadoff batter OF Joe Gray Jr. hit the first pitch of the game over the wall for an early 1-0 lead, his 13th homer of 2022, but he also struck out four times. It’s uncertain whether Wisconsin manager Joe Ayrault had any bench bats available, as Wes Clarke, Ethan Murray, and Ashton McGee have not played for several days. This is something to keep a close watch on. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 7, Kannapolis 4 • Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Chirinos Homers Twice & Jimenez Totals 10 Ks in 7-4 Win Like the Nashville game above, the Mudcats mostly led a tight game (5-3 from the third inning) before tacking on additional runs late. 1B Jesus Chirinos (3-for-4, 2 HR, double, 4 RBIs) provided most of the offense in perhaps his best game of the year, hitting a 2-run shot for a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning and another 2-run shot in the 2nd inning to stretch the advantage to 5-0. Starting RHP Edwin Jimenez (5 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 10 Ks), along with LHP Leoni De La Cruz and RHP Junior Montero (2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks), were all excellent, as they combined to strike out 17 Kannapolis batters in the contest. Three Quick Strikes: SS Eduardo Garcia (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) also had a solid game as he positions himself for a possible late-season promotion to High-A This was 24-year-old De La Cruz’s (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 WP, 3 Ks) debut at a full season level. We’ve no information on any specific injury, but C Jeferson Quero has missed the past week of action. Ideally, he should be making his way to High-A Wisconsin soon, especially if 4th-round draft pick Matthew Wood will be coming to Carolina after an initial Arizona stint. Carolina’s been making it work behind the plate with the veteran Jose Sibrian and young Jesus Garcia, though Garcia had two errors in this game (both for catcher interference). ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Athletics 12, ACL Brewers Blue 2 • Box Score / Game Log Undrafted starting RHP Nick Merkel made his organizational debut, giving up no runs, one hit, and one walk in one inning of work, while usual long man RHP Jared Albir wore this one (2 IP, 10 R, 9 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 WP, 4 Ks). OF Jace Avina (1-for-3, 2 walks) reached base three times, and young 9th-round pick Tayden Hall (2-for-4) singled twice as the offense’s minor highlights. Final: ACL Brewers Gold 8, ACL Guardians 5 • Box Score / Game Log RHP Gerson Calzadilla (6 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 3 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 5 Ks) put in an excellent start to lower his season ERA to 3.29, and ACL Gold held on from there. LHP Jakob Brustoski’s (2/3 IP, 4 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 1 K) struggles continue. The Gold Men only managed four hits, aided by five Guardian errors. First-round pick SS Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-3, double, 2 walks, RBI, SB) reached base three times to lead the offense. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Final: DSL Phillies White 7, DSL Brewers1 6 • Box Score / Game Log DSL Brewers 1 trailed 6-0, and 7-2 before a 4-run rally in the final inning fell just short with the bases left stranded. Starting LHP Wande Torres (4 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 2 H, 4 BB, 6 Ks) was solid for the second consecutive time after his surprise selection for the DSL all-star game. OF Duncan Garcia (1-for-3, double, walk, RBI, SB) and young INF Gery Holguin (2-for-4, double) provided an offensive spark. 15. 16. I'd have been fine with Whit Merrifield even - .266 BABIP this year is weighing him down. Versatile player who could start at second base against lefties and then move around or pinch hit when facing righties. Getting four bullpen arms (Rogers, Bush, Rosenthal, Lamet) to replace one (Hader) felt like overkill (or an attempt to prove to the fans or the manager that the loss of Hader shouldn't be used as an excuse), as I actually like the rest of our bullpen guys. Well, we the fans felt the team needed a right-handed hitter (first baseman, second baseman or third baseman) or a switch-hitter (centerfielder or infielder). If the offense falters in the same predictable way that it did in 2014, we will grumble about it until the franchise wins a World Series.
  17. Biloxi needed 11 innings, but rewarded the home fans with a walk-off grand slam. The Mudcats lost a top prospect in a scary wall collision but kept their composure to win in 10 innings. Wisconsin was beaten handily, while Nashville is ruing its missed chances in a 2-1 loss. If Andruw Monasterio was offended at the intentional walk issued which brought him to the plate with the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, he took it out on the baseball by depositing the first pitch he saw far over the left center field wall, as Biloxi defeated Montgomery 6-2, ultimately rewarding starting pitcher Victor Castaneda for a fine performance. Carolina’s Hendry Mendez suffered a scary collision with the right field side wall early in the Mudcats’ road game, but the team managed to overcome the injury and several other setbacks to win 5-4 in Fayetteville. Ethan Small returned to AAA and dominated in his usual manner, but the clutch hits were missing on this day in a 2-1 loss. Wisconsin fell behind 7-0 at home and didn’t have many answers against a quality Cedar Rapids team. After the games, rumors abounded of promotions for Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, Joey Wiemer, Tristan Peters, Antoine Kelly and Justin Jarvis, although the only confirmed promotion is that of Mr. Peters. We can’t wait for the announcements on Monday and Tuesday!! Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Small, Monasterio, Castaneda and Peters, as well as Robbie Hitt. Transactions (Mostly unconfirmed rumors, though with a decent amount of smoke): OF Tristan Peters promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin LHP Antoine Kelly promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin (subject to confirmation) RHP Justin Jarvis promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin (subject to confirmation) OF Sal Frelick promoted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi (subject to confirmation) OF Garrett Mitchell promoted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi (subject to confirmation) OF Joey Wiemer promoted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi (subject to confirmation) Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Charlotte 2, Nashville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Knights Score Late to Beat Sounds Squander enough chances and you’ll ultimately lose…Nashville went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, stranded nine runners and had two players caught stealing in this home loss. LHP Ethan Small (5 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) was terrific in his return to AAA action after a start for the Brewers five days earlier, though exited after just 65 pitches (37 strikes). OF Corey Ray (1-fo-3, HR, walk, RBI) produced the Sounds’ only run with a solo homer (5th of the year) to tie the game in the 3rd inning. Having just recently returned from injury, Ray exited early for the 2nd straight game, likely in an effort to ease him back. See more highlights, including on Small’s effort and stellar defensive plays, on the team’s twitter handle The Sounds failed to produce a second run despite having two-on with two outs in the 5th inning, one-on with one out in the 6th inning, two-on with nobody out in the 7th inning, two-on with one out in the 8th inning and a one-out single in the 9th inning. Reliever Marcus Walden took the loss, having given up a lead-off single and 2-out RBI double in the top of the 9th inning. Three Quick Strikes: Rehabbing RHP Luis Perdomo (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K) followed up Small’s work with two perfect innings, as he announces to all who will listen that he’s ready for a return to The Show. 1B Jon Singleton (1-for-2, 2 walks) finished off his terrific July (1.071 OPS with 9 home runs) by getting on base three more times. Relatively rare errors by Brice Turang (8th of the year) and Mario Feliciano (4th of the year) thankfully didn’t cost the team. Despite the loss, Nashville won the series over Charlotte 4-2. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (59-39) goes on the road to face 46-52 Norfolk (Orioles’ affiliate). Expect RHP Tyler Herb (6 IP, 2 ER last outing) to start Game One of the series. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 6, Montgomery 2 (final in 11 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Grand Finish! Monasterio's Grand Slam Wins It In the 11th For Biloxi The Biscuits intentionally walked Sal Frelick to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, opting to face the superb Andruw Monasterio (2-for-6, HR, 4 RBIs) instead. Monasterio responded to the subtle insult by blasting the first pitch he saw far over the wall in left center field to hit the Medical Arts Pharma and Hearing Center. Full game highlight package via the Shuckers: RHP Victor Castaneda (5 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 6 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) had his second excellent start of the week against Montgomery, though faltered in the 6th inning as he ultimately reached 96 pitches. Four consecutive singles to the outfield to commence that 6th inning ended Castaneda’s night, but RHP Robbie Hitt extinguished the bases loaded, nobody out jam with two strikeouts and a groundout to strand all three inherited Biscuits. Down 2-1 at this point, Biloxi responded by loading the bases (1B Thomas Dillard single, plus two walks) with nobody out in the bottom half of the 6th inning, but nearly got nothing when C Jason Lopez grounded into a 5-2-3 double play. Thankfully a subsequent wild pitch tied up the game 2-2. Unfortunately, the Shuckers were unable to cash in on Garrett Mitchell’s one-out single in the 7th inning, Cam Devanney’s leadoff 8th inning double or two walks in the 10th inning to load the bases. Finally, Monasterio came through with the superman blast to win it, giving Biloxi a 5-1 series win. Two Quick Strikes: Along with Hitt, RHPs Kent Hasler, Cam Robinson and Harold Chirino each pitched 1-2 scoreless innings, as the foursome combined for this line: 6 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks, thus giving Biloxi’s offense ample time to grab a win. Similar to the Sounds’ game, Biloxi also had umpteen chances to win this game earlier (2-for-15 with runners in scoring position; 12 men left on base), but the home crowd was able to celebrate a walk-off grand slam victory in this case thanks to amazing pitching throughout the 11 innings. Next week’s outlook: 46-48 Biloxi travels to take on the 46-50 Mississippi Braves, possibly with a largely revamped outfield if in fact the trio of Frelick, Mitchell and Wiemer have all been promoted to AAA. If so, expect Tristen Lutz, Tristan Peters and Noah Campbell to man the day-to-day outfield and annihilate opposing pitching. RHP TJ Shook (6 1/3 IP, 2 ER in last game) is my best guess to start the first game of the series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Cedar Rapids 9, Wisconsin 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Homestand Ends with Loss to Cedar Rapids Also check out the game highlights put together by the Timber Rattlers’ exceptional media team: Starting LHP Russell Smith (4 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 5 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) had better luck against Cedar Rapids earlier in the series, as in this game he was tagged for three 1st inning runs and another two runs in the 3rd inning, as the Timber Rattlers were blown out to end a 2-game winning streak and lose the series 4-2. 3B Zavier Warren (.618 season OPS) has been getting some better results recently (10-game on-base streak with three homers in this stretch), but his game-opening error and then 1st inning strikeout with two-on and one out helped set a negative tone for Wisconsin in this game, which he’ll need to quickly forget as he turns over a new leaf for next week’s series. Down 5-0 in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Wisconsin again failed to score, this time despite getting singles from Warren and OF Tristan Peters (2-for-4, double, walk, 2 RBIs), along with a walk. This was really their last opportunity to make a game of it, as RHP Christian Tripp gave up a walk and 2-run homer to commence the 5th inning for a 7-0 deficit. Via SoundCloud: Rattler Radio Postgame Podcast Four Quick Strikes: Out of three relievers, RHP Brady Schanuel had the best outing (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks). OF Jackson Chourio watch: 0-for-4 in his first hitless game in High-A, though the bright side is that he did not strike out. C Darrien Miller arm watch: Cedar Rapids went 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts, so Miller has now caught 15 base stealers out of 106 on the season. Fittingly, given how solid of a fixture Peters has been for the Timber Rattlers, he knocked in both of their runs in this game (his last in High-A, as Manager Joe Ayrault announced his promotion to AA Biloxi after the contest) through a 7th inning double. Next week’s outlook: 50-45 Wisconsin travels to 36-60 Quad Cities, hoping to muster enough offense despite Tristan Peters’ deserved promotion to AA Biloxi. RHP Justin Bullock is expected to make his 4th start for Wisconsin this year in the series opener. Pre-Game Notes (not available via usual link) Final: Carolina 5, Fayetteville 4 (final in 10 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Gets Series Split with 5-4 Victory in Extras Although the game was compelling, it was actually quite secondary in importance from the 2nd inning onward, given 18-year old OF Hendry Mendez’s scary stumble and unprotected collision against the right field side wall, which required medical personnel to stabilize him on a stretcher and cart him off the field. According to the Mudcats’ twitter handle, they’re “told that he is doing well and will remain under observation throughout the night”. Let’s pray Mendez makes an amazing recovery for the second time this year, recalling that in early May he was announced to go onto the injury list, only to have that designation rescinded and see him back in action one day later. As to the game, Manager Victor Estevez’s resilient bunch came through in spite the scary injury, a leaping steal of a potential 2nd inning homer off OF Eduarqui Fernandez’s bat, yielding two runs in the 7th inning to allow Fayetteville to tie the game 4-4 and then having a runner thrown out at home in the top of the 10th inning. Fayetteville opened the scoring on that 2nd inning injury scare which resulted in an inside-the-park home run, but the Mudcats responded with three singles (OF Hedbert Perez, SS Alberis Ferrer, OF Oswal Leones) and two walks in the top of the 3rd inning to grab a 2-1 lead. Three walks and a hit-by-pitch in the next inning then extended the advantage to 3-1. Starting RHP Alexander Cornielle (5 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 5 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks) faced quite a bit of traffic, but limited the damage. 1B Jesus Chirinos (1-for-3, double, 2 walks, RBI) came through with what would prove to be the game-winning RBI double in the top of the 10th inning, bringing home Manfred’s ghost (Leones) and earning Carolina a 3-3 series split. Three Quick Strikes: Leones (2-for-4, double, walk, RBI) had a nice game, doubling and scoring in the 7th inning to extend the lead to 4-2. The squad’s youngest pitcher (19-year old RHP Jeison Pena) struggled a bit, allowing Fayetteville to tie the game 4-4 with two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, but 3B Luis Silva made a big play to eliminate a runner trying for home for the second out of the inning. RHPs Junior Montero (three hitters, three strikeouts), Miguel Guerrero (three-up, three-down 9th inning) and Brannon Jordan (three-up, three-down 10th inning) were fabulous in relief to give Carolina a chance to win the game. Next week’s outlook: 48-48 Carolina returns home to host 44-52 Kannapolis. I’d expect RHPs Jefferson Figueroa (6.27 season ERA) and Fernando Olguin (4.85 season ERA) to tag-team the opener. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. While the full season affiliates have their travel day on Monday, the short season DSL and ACL clubs are back in action. 19. Strong pitching and some late opponent blunders gave the Sounds a close win. The Shuckers blew open a tight affair with three eighth inning homers. The Timber Rattlers fell behind early in their 10th straight loss. The Mudcats mustered just three hits in their loss. Jason Alexander shut out Charlotte over five innings, as Nashville defeated Charlotte 3-1. Nick Bennett put in his second straight terrific performance, striking out eight in Biloxi’s 6-1 victory over Montgomery, while Garrett Mitchell hit the tie-breaking 8th inning homer. Wes Clarke reached base in all four of his plate appearances, but Wisconsin went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position in their 6-2 loss to Cedar Rapids. Carolina’s offense was largely absent in Fayetteville, as the Mudcats fell behind 4-0 and ultimately lost 5-1. In short season action, the Brewers’ Dominican squads were both victorious, while ACL Blue was unlucky and ACL Gold got rained out. Thursday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Alexander, Bennett, Mitchell and Clarke, as well as Thomas Dillard, with apologies to Tristen Lutz. After RHP Matt Hardy (2.05 season ERA in AA/AAA) pitched a clean 6th inning, RHP Luis Perdomo was surprisingly asked to make a second straight rehab appearance (his sixth since July 13th) after also throwing in Wednesday’s game. Perdomo struggled a bit, giving up a tying run on a walk, single and RBI groundout before RHP Zack Brown (3.55 season ERA in AAA) entered to get the final out of the 7th inning. Perdomo was also assisted by a nice defensive play by 3B Patrick Dorrian. Rehabbing RHP Justin Topa ran into similar trouble in the 8th inning (leadoff single and walk), but escaped unharmed through a fly out and ground ball double play, setting the stage for the Sounds’ offense to finally re-awaken. A one-out double by DH Jon Singleton (.821 season OPS) and single by 2B Pablo Reyes (2-for-3, walk; .837 season OPS) had Nashville poised to grab the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning, though it ultimately occurred in bizarre fashion, with a wild pitch walk scoring Singleton and a catcher throwing error also plating Reyes on the same play. RHP Trevor Kelley (0.41 season ERA in AAA) reminded us that he’s also stellar, striking out the side swinging in the 9th inning for his fifth AAA save this year. Friday’s outlook: Rehabbing RHP Freddy Peralta is scheduled to make his second rehab start in Nashville, as the Sounds aim for a fourth straight victory at home. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 6, Montgomery 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Late Runs Lead Sounds Past Knights Similar to the Sounds’ contest, Biloxi found itself knotted 1-1 entering the 8th inning on the back of terrific starting pitching from LHP Nick Bennett (6 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 8 Ks). Bennett actually exited down 1-0 on a 3rd inning homer, but 1B Thomas Dillard (2-for-3, HR, double, walk, RBI) doubled and scored on a C Brent Diaz single to tie the game in the 7th inning. After RHPs Kent Hasler and Robbie Hitt pitched scoreless 7th and 8th innings, the Shucker offense erupted in the bottom of the 8th inning, with OF Garrett Mitchell (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) hitting the clutch 2-run homer to center field to take a 3-1 lead. Mitchell’s blast was followed by a OF Tristen Lutz (2-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) two-run shot and then Dillard smacking a solo homer to swiftly give Biloxi a comfortable 6-1 lead. 25-year old (and presumably free agent-to-be) RHP Nash Walters pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, as he continues the best baseball of his career (zero earned runs over his last 16 games, with 26 strikeouts over 16 2/3 innings during this stretch). Friday’s outlook: LHP Brandon Knarr (2.63 season ERA in High-A/AA) is scheduled to start Friday’s game, as Biloxi looks to grab a 3-1 series lead at home against Montgomery. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Cedar Rapids 6, Wisconsin 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Slow Start Dooms Rattlers Also check out the game highlights put together by the Timber Rattlers’ exceptional media team: Knowing that Wisconsin came in with a 9-game losing streak, Cedar Rapids immediately jumped on the Timber Rattlers, scoring four runs on three hits and three walks in the 1st inning. Starting RHP Israel Puello (4 1/3 IP, 5 R, 5 H, 6 BB, 5 Ks) had been promoted from Low-A Carolina in part on the strength of his 61K / 17 BB ratio, so his struggle for control in this game (his 5th start in High-A) was an aberration for him. DH Wes Clarke (3-for-3, two doubles, walk, RBI) doubled in OF Jackson Chourio (1-for-5) in the bottom of the 1st inning, then SS Ethan Murray (1-for-3, double, walk) doubled and scored to tighten the contest at 4-2 in the 2nd inning. However, Wisconsin stranded one runner in the 2nd inning and the bases loaded in the 3rd inning before the Kernals started padding their lead. For the game, the Timber Rattlers went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring positions, stranding 10 men on base. RHPs Zach Mort (3 2/3 IP, 4 Ks) and James Meeker (1 IP, 2 Ks) were solid in relief, combining to pitch 4 2/3 innings without yielding any earned runs. Friday’s outlook: LHP Antoine Kelly (3.41 ERA) is Friday’s scheduled starter per the Thursday Game Notes, but let’s play it by ear as he just threw 100 pitches in Sunday’s contest. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fayetteville 5, Carolina 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Perez Homers in 5-1 Loss in Fayetteville With Chourio promoted and Jeferson Quero getting a rest day, this game was a challenge for the Mudcat offense, which only managed three hits and three walks against 16 strikeouts. The Woodpeckers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning against RHP Stiven Cruz on a hit-by-pitch and 2-run homer by OF Joey Loperfido. The 23-year old Loperfido (c’mon Astros, promote the man) then bested Cruz again in the 5th inning with another 2-run blast. OF Hedbert Perez hit a solo shot in the 7th inning for the Mudcats’ sole run, his 12th of the year, to briefly cut the gap to 4-1. Perhaps the game’s biggest bright spot was the returns of LHP Karlos Morales (last pitched July 4th) and Brannon Jordan (last pitched July 3rd). Neither allowed an earned run in their one inning of work each. The Mudcats’ youngest pitcher 19-year old RHP Jeison Pena (2.83 season ERA in Rookie / Low-A) also pitched a scoreless inning. Friday’s outlook: RHP Miguel Segura (4.70 ERA) is expected to be on the hill for Game 4 of the series, as Carolina tries to take a 3-1 series lead in Fayetteville. ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Cubs 4, ACL Brewers Blue 3 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Some claim that it’s better to be lucky than good and the Cubs clearly subscribe to this mantra. RHP Jared Albir (5 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 2 H, 2 BB, 1 balk, 7 Ks) had dominated the ACL Cubs, allowing only an unearned run in the 1st inning. Meanwhile, the Men in Blue tied the game in the 3rd inning on a Daniel Guilarte (1-for-3, walk, RBI) single and grabbed a 3-1 lead in the 4th inning on a wild pitch and C Felipe Valderrama (1-for-2, HBP, RBI) single. However, after our Blue Squad squandered a two-on, nobody out opportunity in the top of the 6th inning, the lucky Cubs used a walk and consecutive 2-out infield singles to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the 6th inning, then took the 4-3 lead on a triple. OF Jace Avina (0-for-2) was plunked to start the game and then again to commence the 7th inning, leaving him stuck at 9 homers on the season and unable to take over this game. OF Duncan Garcia (1-for-4, HR, RBI) extended the lead with solo shot in the 4th inning, also his second of the season. OF Luis Lara (1-for-4, RBI, SB) also knocked in a run on an infield single in the 5th inning. 21. I wonder if we’ll acquire any reliever, given that we’ve four injured hurlers in the last stage of their recovery (Peralta, Cousins, Topa, Perdomo all pitching in MILB rehab stints) and the initial positive production from Jake McGee (though a very small sample size).
  22. A day of solid pitching and late production delivered walk-off wins for ACL Brewers Gold and DSL Brewers-1, the latter in Game Two of its doubleheader. ACL Brewers Blue and DSL Brewers-1 (its opener) each dropped one-run games, despite excellent pitching. Henrison Mota didn’t yield an earned run in five inning of work, though ACL Brewers Gold still needed to come back from a 4-1 deficit, which they did in a walk-off 5-4 win over ACL Athletics. Jadher Areinamo tripled and reached base three times in the victory. Yujanyer Herrera was also solid in striking out seven ACL Reds over 5 2/3 innings, though ACL Brewers Blue ultimately fell 4-3 due to four errors and only four hits. DSL Brewers-2 had the day off, while DSL Brewers-1 played a doubleheader against DSL Texas Blue, dropping the opener 2-1 in spite of Manuel Rodriguez conceding only one earned run over five innings. Thankfully, they scratched out a 2-1 walk-off win in the second game of the doubleheader on the strong effort of three pitchers. Gery Holguin reached base six times in the two 7-inning games. The lead grew to 3-1, thanks in part to two Blue batters reaching base via strikeouts (wild pitch, throwing error) in the top of the 6th inning, before ACL Reds finally got to Herrera to knot it 3-3 in the 6th inning. The Reds grabbed their fourth run and the only lead they would need on a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the 7th inning. Blue only managed to produce just one hit in the final five innings, a one-out double from 1B Quinton Low in the 8th inning which unfortunately resulted in no runs. Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Athletics 4 Box Score / Game Log The win brings ACL Brewers Gold’s record back up to 18-16. 19-year old Henrison Mota (5 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 3 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 6 Ks) walked the first two batters of the game, before settling in to deliver a fine start. The first of his unearned runs was due to his own error in the 1st inning, while the second was caused by a dropped ball at first base. 18-year old 3B Jadher Areinamo (2-for-4, triple, walk, RBI) opened up the bottom of the 1st inning with a triple, then scored on the Athletics second error of the inning. The A’s would graciously commit five errors in the game. LHP Jakob Brustoski continues to work on harnessing his arsenal, unfortunately throwing six wild pitches in two innings of work, though he also managed five strikeouts and only conceded two runs as Gold fell behind 4-1. 1B Branlyn Jaraba brought home SS Gregory Barrios (1-for-4, walk, RBI) and OF Luis Castillo with a 2-run single in the 6th inning, while Gold’s tying run scored without a hit in the 7th inning. RHP Raul Mendoza earned the win with two scoreless innings, as Barrios came through with a game-winning infield single with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the 9th inning. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Game One: DSL Texas Blue 2, DSL Brewers1 1 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log In the opener, 16-year old RHP Manuel Rodriguez was solid again (5 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 3 Ks), but the offense went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 8 runners (vs. 3 runners for Texas) in a 2-1 loss. The team managed to load the bases with one out against Texas' 22-year old closer (unfair!) in the final inning, but couldn't punch the tying run across. Game Two: DSL Brewers1 2, Texas Blue 1, (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Victory in the second game brought DSL Brewers-1’s record to 13-22. Commencing the second game without three of their most consistent offensive contributors (Luis Lara, Edgardo Ordonez, Arnys Rodriguez) was a bold strategy, but it worked thanks to great pitching and no errors in a 2-1 extra inning victory. 18-year old LHP Jhofez Mejias was excellent in his last relief outing, so earned his first start in eight appearances and didn't disappoint (4 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks). 19-year old RHP Hamlet Vasquez followed with three scoreless innings (3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks). The Brewers' 2nd hit of the game came off the bat of 16-year old 3B Gery Holguin (1-for-2, 2 walks, 2 RBIs) and was clutch, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the 6th inning. With 2-on, 1-out in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Brewers brought in Lara as a pinch hitter to try to walk it off, but unfortunately he struck out while the lead runner was also thrown out trying for 3rd base. In the extra inning, 18-year old RHP Dikember Sanchez got the call, striking out two batters and not allowing Manfred's ghost to move. That set the stage for another potential Brewers' walk-off, which they got...literally. Three walks (the second intentional) brought home the winning run, with Holguin again collecting the RBI. 23. 24. Biloxi and Carolina grabbed series-clinching wins over tough competition with solid 7-3 victories. Wisconsin was swept in a doubleheader, as the bats disappointed. Nashville gave up four home runs to lose their finale in Louisville. Cam Devanney led the Biloxi offense with three hits and four runs batted in, while Carlos Luna and Noah Zavolas were excellent in covering the full nine innings, giving Biloxi a 7-3 win over Pensacola. Carlos F. Rodriguez was his usual exceptional self for the Mudcats, while the offense came through with a 6-run 5th inning in their 7-3 win over Down East. The Timber Rattlers produced only two runs in their doubleheader sweep at the hands of Beloit, spoiling a fine pitching effort by Antoine Kelly in the opening game. Nashville gave up big hits and left too many men on base in their series-deciding 9-5 loss at Louisville, despite Jon Singleton and Keston Hiura combining for two home runs and five RBIs. Sunday’s Game Balls go to Devanney, Rodriguez, Kelly, Luna and Singleton, with apologies to Hiura and Zavolas. Transactions: OF Jackson Chourio promoted to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina RHP Freddy Peralta commenced rehab assignment at AAA Nashville Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Louisville 9, Nashville 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Bats Power Past Sounds on Sunday DH/1B Jon Singleton (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBIs) continued his terrific 3-game series (6-for-13, 3 HR, 8 RBIs), giving Nashville a 1-0 lead with a 1st inning single. However, the Sounds stranded four runners in the first two innings, a theme of the game. Rehabbing RHP Freddy Peralta (2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) returned to action for the first time since May 22, throwing 33 pitches (22 strikes) over two innings and exiting with the score tied 1-1. Peralta gave up a home run on his very first pitch and also walked the lead-off batter in the 2nd inning, which were the sole blemishes in his encouraging comeback. RHP Luis Perdomo pitched a 1-2-3 third inning in his fourth rehab appearance for Nashville, though he’s yet to throw more than 14 pitches in any outing. RHP Josh Lindblom was unfortunately battered for four runs in the 4th inning to set Nashville back 5-1, though 2B Keston Hiura (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs) closed the gap to 5-4 by smashing his fourth homer in AAA this year, a 3-run shot in the top of the 5th inning. However, two more runners were stranded in that frame. Lindblom gave up a single and a walk in the bottom of the 5th inning, but nearly escaped via a caught stealing (thank you C Mario Feliciano), fly out and ground ball, but Hiura booted the latter. Lindblom then walked his final batter before giving way to RHP Zack Brown, who conceded a walk and a back-breaking grand slam to trail 9-4. Singleton homered in on a 2-0 pitch in the 7th inning to claw back to 9-5, while Nashville's bullpen of RHPs Matt Hardy, Trevor Kelley and Luis Contreras combined on three scoreless, hitless innings to give the offense a chance. However, Nashville stranded three more runners in the 8th inning to complete a frustrating night, as Hiura grounded out in his opportunity to play hero. 22-year old leadoff man SS Brice Turang (1-for-2, 3 walks, SB) reached base four times in the game, as he continues to perform at a high level (season slash: .282 AVG / .349 OBP / .378 SLG). Next week’s outlook: The 55-37 Sounds return home, facing 34-59 Charlotte this week. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Pensacola 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Devanney's Perfect Night Drives Shuckers To 7-3 Victory 3B Cam Devanney (3-for-3, HR, 4 RBIs) may be the surprise of the season, once again stepping up for this talented Biloxi offense. RHP Carlos Luna (5 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) retired the first 11 batters he faced before conceding consecutive 2-out home runs in the 4th inning, as the Shuckers found themselves behind 2-0. Thankfully, the Biloxi offense immediately responded with 4th inning doubles from OF Garrett Mitchell (1-for-4, double), OF Joey Wiemer (2-for-3, double, walk, SB) and 1B Noah Campbell (1-for-4, double, RBI), a single from DH Tristen Lutz and a Devanney sacrifice fly, giving the team a 3-2 lead which it would not relinquish. Devanney’s second hit of the game extended the Shucker advantage to 4-2 in the 5th inning. RHP Noah Zavolas (4 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) entered in the 6th inning, getting a rough start by yielding a double and RBI single (4-3 lead), before settling in to retire eight straight batters in a fine outing. C Brent Diaz (1-for-4, HR, RBI) re-established the 2-run lead with his 7th homer of 2022, a solo shot in the 6th inning. Devanney completed his evening with a 2-run homer (15th of the season) in the 7th inning to push Biloxi’s advantage to 7-3. Whether his bat is hot or not, it’s excellent to see Wiemer continue to contribute in all manners, including his 24th stolen base of 2022 and this web-gem: Next week’s outlook: 42-46 Biloxi remains home to take on 41-42 Montgomery this week. RHP Victor Castaneda is expected to start the series opener. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Beloit 1, Wisconsin 0 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Beloit 5, Wisconsin 2 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, Game One details: Unearned Run Beats Wisconsin in Game One Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, Game Two details: Rattlers Drop Game Two 5-2 to Sky Carp LHP Antoine Kelly (5 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 4 H, 3 BB, 7 Ks) threw 100 pitches (64 strikes) and deserved a better fate, but was instead saddled with a loss as the Timber Rattler bats couldn’t produce in the opening game of Sunday’s doubleheader. The only run which Beloit needed came via a walk, two stolen bases and a throwing error in the first inning. 1B Ashton McGee (2-for-3, double) doubled in the 2nd inning and added a leadoff 7th inning single, but his teammates couldn’t come through. A two-on, nobody out 3rd inning opportunity (SS Antonio Pinero single, OF Terence Doston walk) also yielded nothing, while another two runners were stranded in the 6th inning (OF Joe Gray Jr. double, OF Tristan Peters walk). Kudos to RHP Joey Matulovich (2 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K) for two strong innings of relief work in the opening 1-0 loss. In the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, the Sky Carp scored in each of the first three innings against RHP Justin Jarvis (4 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 3 Ks) in building a 5-0 lead. RHPs Zach Mort, James Meeker and Taylor Floyd kept a flicker of hope alive with three scoreless innings, with Mort in particular striking out three batters. Wisconsin’s last push produced two runs on three hits in the 6th inning by Peters (2-for-3), Gray (1-for-3, double) and DH Darrien Miller (1-for-2, walk, RBI), but that was as close as they’d come in the 5-2 series finale, sadly concluding a 3-game sweep by Beloit. At least the team made some fine defensive plays along the way: Next week’s outlook: 48-41 Wisconsin will also remain home, hosting 55-35 Cedar Rapids, with OF Jackson Chourio expected to join the squad from Tuesday. LHP Russell Smith is scheduled to start the opening game. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Down East 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Score Six in the Fifth to Down the Wood Ducks After showing he was mortal in his last outing, 20-year old RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) was back in shutdown mode on Sunday to lead the Mudcats to a series clinching victory. OF Hendry Mendez (1-for-3, SF, RBI) got things started right away, singling to lead off the bottom of the first and extend his hitting streak to 13 games. OF Jackson Chourio (1-for-4, double) followed with his 23rd double of the season and OF Hedbert Perez (1-for-3, triple, SF, RBI) delivered the first run via sacrifice fly. A 3rd inning Wood Duck homer knotted the affair at 1-1, though Rodriguez’s defense came to his aid by throwing out two runners at third base in the same inning (left fielder Perez on a single; C Jeferson Quero on an attempted steal). Quero gunned down another robbery attempt in the top of the 5th inning (this time at second base) and Down East thankfully went to their bullpen in the bottom half of the inning, enabling Carolina to unleash its pent-up offense. In that 5th inning, the Mudcats produced six runs on four hits and two hit batsmen, with the big hits coming through a Perez triple and 1B Jesus Chirinos (2-for-4, HR, RBI) solo homer (6th of the year) for a 7-1 advantage. RHPs Fernando Olguin and Miguel Guerrero were both effective in relief, throwing scoreless 6th and 9th innings, respectively. This was Olguin’s fourth straight short appearance after working as a starter or long man in his first eight outings. Mr. Chourio was promoted to High-A Wisconsin after the game, ending his unforgettable 62-game stretch in Carolina with a .324 / .373 / .600 slash line in 271 plate appearances, including 40 extra-base hits, 47 RBIs, 51 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Way to go Jackson!!! Next week’s outlook: 45-45 Carolina hits the road to face 38-50 Fayetteville this week.
