  1. Gotta say I did not see this coming--I figured Edmonds would sign with the Cards as a last hurrah kinda thing or just retire. Heck, he still might be able to, given the parameters of the deal. I also would've preferred to see Gabe Gross back, I think, but maybe he was looking for something pricier. Hopefully Edmonds still has some power left if he ends up sticking for whatever reason, because otherwise it feels like we don't have much coming off the bench.
  2. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200809060.shtml Anyway (it's an old argument that makes no sense to rehash now) http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200809270.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200707050.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200707140.shtml http://www.baseball-refer...s/MIL/MIL200707050.shtml href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200707050.shtml" target=_blank>http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200709140.shtml http://www.baseball-refer...s/MIL/MIL200707140.shtml href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200707140.shtml" target=_blank>http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200709180.shtml I'm confused, does it make sense to rehash or not? I could at least double that total. Like I said, love/hate. Love when he's pitching, hate when he's not (the opposite of my affection for Suppan... hate/love). #15 will be worn by Ryan Sweeny for a couple years after Sheets is gone in Oakland. Some of those are 404, and some of those just jibe with what people were trying to say earlier--he was clearly injured. Having an injury doesn't necessarily mean someone "disappears," as if he just didn't want to be there or simply wasn't "clutch." I will grant that "fragile" is a fair tag to place on him given the last few years.
  3. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200809060.shtml Anyway (it's an old argument that makes no sense to rehash now), no #15? http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20100126/capt.6d4f5ab821a945f99777a9104e7eab85.athletics_sheets_baseball_oas102.jpg
  4. I'll be very interested to see how he performs in the American League. And yeah, this isn't quite the level of seeing Mollie in a Blue Jays uniform, and obviously not the same situation, but it's up there for me. I'll always be a big Big Ben fan (until, of course, he winds up with a hated NL Central rival).
  5. I haven't seen it yet, but somebody told me there's a BP guy saying he thinks this deal and the size of it might have something to do with MLB cracking down on the Marlins' spending or lack thereof...makes some sense, I guess, because a lot of this really doesn't. Even if they just are signing him to deal him, it's an odd allocation of resources to me.
  6. Yeah, $10M, PLUS perf bonuses is a lot more bones than I expected, if that's true. I'm definitely going to a lot more A's games this year Edit: at least the first part of the year. And yes, please keep him out of the NL Central, Mr. Beane.
  7. The reports listed on MLB Trade Rumors say the A's offer was "competitive" and in Big Ben's $8 or $9M/year range and this could go down today. This would be awesome. But again, with the Mets/As rumors, and now Nady being signed, I'm just glad that it looks like Big Ben won't be wearing Cubbie blue next year.
  8. I have a hard time seeing the A's being able to outbid the Mets (both in terms of finances and situation) if it came to that, but as a huge Big Ben fan I'd love to see him land in Oakland and would definitely be taking BART over to Mt. Davis to watch him pitch for his three-month tenure here in the Bay Area! Better than in a Cubs uniform, at any rate...
  9. Great value. I'd been holding on to the ridiculous pipe dream that we'd make a run at Big Ben, but given our situation financially (as well as Sheets' overall), I'm more than happy with this deal. Welcome Back, Sharpie. Let's pretend Johnny Estrada never happened.
  10. This interview is really amazing--McGwire can't stop weeping.
  11. The stltoday.com Cards board is a laugh riot right now. Some very defensive people trying to act aloof and failing. I know this isn't truly news to them, or anyone, but someone who was the face of a franchise that admonishes others to "play the right way" to admit to cheating is still too rich.
  12. (The cost will actually be shouldered by the Milwaukee Brewers, who agreed to pick up most of Hall's remaining salary when they dealt him to Seattle last August. Thus, in a unique twist, the small-market Brewers will help subsidize the Red Sox, one of the most profitable teams in the game.) Ugh. I know it's all relative (although remember when the Brewers supposedly told the Yanks to pound sand when they wanted us to pick up Cam's salary in a deal because, well, they were the Yankees?), but ugh. I don't have strong pro- or anti-DM feelings, but that parenthetical doesn't reflect altogether well--on the fact that that contract was signed to begin with (I have less a problem with that) or the fact that he couldn't deal him without the Brewers shouldering the burden and at that time (more problematic to me). Yeah, I know it was ultimately Hall's play, but still.
  13. Yeah, it's not even that the economy is in the tank, it's the fact that he hasn't pitched in a year-plus and has a history of missing sizable chunks of time. He's best taking a one year incentive-laden for significantly less and then earning that last huge paycheck. Even if that is the case, I don't see him back with the Brewers (but would hate to see him in Cubbie blue or Cardinal red).
  14. Sheets chatting with the Cubs now that the Rangers went with Harden, according to MLB Trade Rumors. I think I'd rather see Duscherer/Mulder in terms of cost and risk than Big Ben at this point, but that'd still be hard to see.
  15. TH confirmed. Hmmmm. Not a huge fan of the three years but I agree that I appreciate them getting after it.
  16. Thanks hawing. I was thinking around a $10 ceiling for both the player tee and any Bernie merch--I almost bought a McClung tee at MP earlier this year (when we just missed each other) for the $30 but decided I hadn't drank enough Spotted Cows.
  17. This is needy but... Would someone going be able to get me a McClung player-tee (M or L is fine) and/or a Bernie Brewer children's shirt (size 5,6,7) if they see one for a decent price? I know "decent price" is vague but I trust your judgments! I will Paypal anyone who can pick this stuff up for it (and shipping) immediately.
  18. Yeah, that was my understanding--they weren't going to pick up the option regardless.
  19. This is going down this afternoon. Not confirmed for who/what yet. From a fan standpoint this stinks because Iwamura was a favorite of mine (even have a shirt jersey) on the Rays (my default AL team having grown up in Sarasota) and I hate seeing him on a team I can't stand. As to whether it makes the Pirates any better, I'll leave to others to break down.
  20. TH says it's two years, for what it's worth. No idea which one is correct (I'm apt to think McCalvy given TH's recent "typos") I wish Castro could somehow come back with the organization, but I'm not sure where.
  21. Craig Counsell, in actuality, despises Special Olympians and kicks their puppies--he only pretends to like them and support their endeavors for the glory of brewerfan.net threads. Seriously, what's this about? Come on.
  22. Mark Lester: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4gzmoUHrQ4 (The kicker is, that's not actually him singing)
  23. Good news (well, not the credit rating...).
  24. You're a better man than I am, I would've turned around and walked out. You don't pay for that.
