  1. There are only 6 teams with whom the Brewers haven't clinched a better record - it's a foregone conclusion, but once one more team is eliminated, the Brewers will officially be in the postseason. Arizona sits at a magic number of 2, and SD is at 4. It could happen as soon as tonight if the Brewers win and either of those teams loses (if both teams are at 2 or less, the Brewers will clinch due to those teams' 3 head-to-head games where one of them has to lose at least twice - confused? don't worry about it, they're no threat to catch us anyway - just a matter of when, not if)
  2. Is Stallings a multi-inning guy? I can't remember.
  3. Now that I actually look at the standings, the Cubs magic # to eliminate Pitt is only 9, With this few games left, it's not impossible, but would take huge streaks in both directions beyond just the 3-game series this weekend
  4. I hadn’t been paying attention to the Buckos - now I’m considering who between them and the Cubs is a harder matchup for us. I still think it’s the Cubs, but more for the nearness of the fanbase. Pirates have been tough for us.
  5. I was looking at the probable pitchers on the brewers mlb site, and they have Harrison listed for the next game, which I mistakenly thought was tomorrow. They have TBD for the other two games of the Reds series
  6. Reading between the lines, I'm thinking they'd like to save Sproat to be the long man in Harrison's start tomorrow. May not be doable unless Henderson can go 7, though.
  7. I'm seeing two 5-game streaks (5/6-12 & 6/21-26), but it really has been workmanlike. They also had a season high 6-game losing streak in April to go from 8-2 to 8-8,
  8. A loss only takes one off the total from the magic number against us (I suspect you are counting it as two - that only happens in head-to-head games, like with Cubs lately). If SD loses 2 of the 3 with AZ, they go down to 4, In that scenario, AZ would also be at 4. ***ETA: I re-read your quote, and we're saying the same thing. Sorry
  9. Magic #s; Dodgers: 16 Braves: 15 Phillies: 11 Cubs: 9 Padres: 6 D-backs: 5 Pirates: 1 i believe everyone else is past the point of being able to catch the Brewers - MKE has the tiebreaker against both the Marlins and Cards, so yesterday’s win took them both out. 18 games left. Looking good for the bye if they just keep stacking series wins
  10. That's a good point, and ideally Brewers win every tiebreaker, but let's talk through this. First, I think we can discount the Phillies - we've got just about as big a lead on them as the Cubs - magic #15. They could still get the tiebreaker on us, but it won't matter. They are, however, in a position to possibly win the division, but that would also mean ATL losing a lot and therefore lessening the possibility the Braves could overtake us. The Phils have 7 against ATL in the next 10 (and Sale vs Sanchez tonight) games, and have series against us and the Cubs coming, too. I would not bet on them. Now let's look at ATL. Currently, Braves are 28-14 in their division (10 division games of their 22 left) and Brewers are 24-13 (15 NLC games in final 21). In order for the tiebreaker to matter, ATL has to make up 3.5 games. I can't do the actual math, but chances are that if ATL and MKE are tied at the end of the year, that means that some combo of ATL winning their division games and MKE losing theirs has happened, and therefore, it's likely ATL gets the tiebreaker. What I take from this is not worry about the tiebreaker with ATL and just get the magic number to zero without it. Currently stands at 19. Maybe that was only interesting to me...
  11. Not that they're a threat, but any win in these upcoming 6 games against Cincy both earns the Brewers the season series win and pushes our magic number to zero against them. Kudos to Henderson for re-setting the bullpen - we still have 6 games before getting to the off day. Drohan tends to get his pitch count up early, so getting almost everybody a rest day last night was good.
  12. I think it was related to Bauers' misadventures in RF more than anything.
  13. I'm not disagreeing, but you understand it's to get he, Vaughn and Yelich in the batting lineup. The calculus has to be that those 3 in the lineup is worth more than Bauers' defensive adventures in RF. Gonna have to put up with this or only two of those can play.
  14. Given Harrison's home/away splits, there might've been a case for starting Gasser on Sunday and let Harrison go on Monday at home against the Cubs. Looks like Gasser/Miz/Henderson for the Cubs next week. I think I would have been interested in getting Harrison some time with the pitching lab in AZ. Maybe that can be accomplished without an IL stint or a send-down. Just go 5-man rotation for a turn, and let him skip one start.
  15. Oh, I know the logic/rational part of this and agree. It's the irrational part of me that hasn't conceded yet.
  16. Honest admission - my head knows the division race is over, but my heart won't celebrate until the magic number reaches Jeffrey Leonard. We still have 7 more games in a row in this stretch of 16, and the bullpen has covered a lot of innings lately, It's nice to have the extra man out there post-Sep. 1, but it'd still be good if we could get a little length out of Henderson and save a couple of these guys that have pitched the last two in a row. I imagine the Cubs BP is in much worse shape.
  17. 15 days for pitchers, which makes it a decision they have to make quickly
  18. Visit the pitching lab? Seems like something mechanical.
  19. Workin’ a 9 to 5 was a fitting tribute to Dolly, RIP. I will always love you, Brewers.
  20. First off, the TV announcers last night were wrong about the season series being tied at 4-4 - it's actually 5-3 in favor of MKE, which I think most people reading this already knew (and that getting to 7 wins clinches the tiebreaker). I am kind of bracing for disappointment tonight - Cubs are good enough to make Miz work and they'll for sure screw up the mound to mess with him, too.
  21. With Bauers' nagging leg/foot injuries, they aren't putting him in the OF much, and that makes playing both he and Vaughn in the field a no-go. You don't really want Vaughn playing 3rd. You could DH Vaughn, but Yelich might be - might be - coming around? Vaughn will play against lefties, I'd think, and that's be an opportunity to sit Yelich. too.
  22. I know he may really be hurt, but couldn't resist
  23. I think you can delete the word probably, at least for now. He still could be a pawn if we need Crow for a late season start, or something like that. Does someone know the rules about keeping Wilson past the 15 days? It seems like kind of a loophole for not having to DFA a guy that has no options remaining, I could see bringing him back up during the last week of the season if he's ok and the Brewers have everything clinched.
  24. How's the usage of the Cubs' bullpen going into today? If it's tired, I smell an unnecessary rainout...
  25. Two updates. First, let's look at the 7 games against the Cubs and the resulting magic numbers. Each team has 18 other games, so let's see what the Cubs would need to do to win the Central if the Brewers went 9-9. Brewers win: 0: magic number is 18, Cubs would need to go 10-8 if Brewers went 9-9. 1: 16, 12-6 2: 14, 14-4 3: (3 wins guarantees the Brewers win the tiebreaker) 11, 17-1 4: 9, no scenario for Cubs if Brewers go 9-9; if Brewers go 8-10, Cubs need 18-0 5: 7, Brewers need to go 6-12 and Cubs go 18-0 6: 5, not worth talking about 7: 3, ditto So, really, just don't get swept. 3 or more wins puts it away pretty safely. Still need to watch the Dodgers and Braves, though,.. Second, here's an update on where the Brewers stand on their magic number vs. other teams: ATL: 23 LAD: 22 PHI: 18 (currently tied with CHC for top WC) SD: 13 AZ: 12 (Note: AZ is currently the #3 wild card with a half game lead over SD, but MKE has tiebreaker on AZ, and not on SD) MIA: 9 STL: 7 PIT: 7 CIN: 5 WAS: 4 NYM: 1 SF & COL: clinched
