Yeah, and I don’t think Wicks is particularly good. But there’s a solid chance he’s a lot better than Drew Smyly and that’s what the Cubs need right now.

Don't write off the Cubs, I think they're just getting started. They have a nice, deep farm system.

Huge dogs for sure but if I face Atlanta with the Brewers staff, I want a five game series to do it. The Brewers’ starters have the best chance of stymying the Braves that way.

If the Brewers are clicking, I think every team is "scared" of them in a postseason series. To me, the key is Peralta. If he's really going well, being able to trot out aces or borderline aces in the first three games, or all five games of a five game series, is damned scary. There's still a month left to go and a lot can happen so I'm cautiously optimistic.

A good/great bullpen can help a little in one run games but the effect is overblown because of the variance in both offense and pitching compensating. If you have a great bullpen and go into the sixth with a one run lead, you might have a four run lead in the ninth. If you have a bad bullpen and go into the sixth with a four run lead, you might have a one run lead in the ninth. It all tends to balance out over 162. Most of a bad one-run game record is due to bad luck in sequencing, not any enlightenment from the coaching staff or shut-down ability of the bullpen (though both can obviously help). Which is explained by the very low correlation YoY of one-run victories/losses, even when the same roster is brought back to play again. Just last year, the Padres were 30-17 in one-run games.

I believe that's exactly what has happened. Without looking, I think their one-run record is awful.

Another tough matchup in the Padres. Despite their losing record, they're still a potent team and their performance has been mostly inexplicable. Let's hope that continues for the next few days because the Cubs get to tee off against the Pirates this weekend.

Yelich is the most obvious candidate, as pretty much all the young guys are centerfielders and it's a real waste to put one of them at first base, especially given the number of question marks about their offense for various reasons.

From a roster-building perspective, this makes quite a bit of sense. And Yelich doesn't need to man 1B full-time, he can rotate back to LF regularly. I don't like the idea of having a dedicated DH unless you have a player on the roster completely incapable of being anything else (Nelson Cruz, for example). In most cases, it makes the most sense to rotate your best hitters through DH when you want to give them a half day off or they're banged up a little.

Duran might have gotten out of that inning if Taylor didn’t hand away a base. But Duran hasn’t been great lately. And yes, woof to the Twins pen.
