  1. From the I feel old stack, nobody in the majors today has played a game in the big leagues in the 1900's.
  2. A win by the Brewers and a loss by the Cards. A doubly good day. Start the season with the win and finish it with a win too.
  3. St Louis is now proposing a rule change so that left handed relievers can only face one batter.
  4. 2019 Brewers Predictions Win-Loss Record: 92-70 Playoffs (Yes, No): Yes Highest Playoff Level Achieved: WS win All-Star Game Representative(s): Hader, Burns, Grandal, Yelich Offensive Player of the Year: Yelich Starting Pitcher of the Year: Bruns Relief Pitcher of the Year: Hader Most Surprising Player: Arcia Most Disappointing Player: Albers
  5. He looked at his age and the market for sluggers like him and decided to take the big pile of cash instead now instead of hoping for more. Steal or albatross will depend on how he ages.
  6. Given the contract, there is no financial advantage to the Sox for putting him in AAA, so any reasons should actually be legit. Otherwise they are paying a whole lot for a guy to be in the minors.
  7. 538 has a good analysis on possible expected value. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/mike-trout-is-a-430-million-bargain/ Despite the title and some of the text, the numbers suggest that if he ages in line with the average of the most comparable group, he will be worth a little more ($450M instead of $430M), so it is likely a pretty close to fair contract, given all the uncertainty.
  8. Bud was the owner. Dalton was the good GM in the 70's and 80's. I hope Sterns tops him by bringing home a WS trophy.
  9. It is definitely not as cut and dried as something like Ray Rice. Larry is grabbing for a phone aggressively from his wife. During that struggle the chair tips and she falls to the ground. He never hits her or slams her to the ground. Still it is not good. Basically if it is anything other than his wife was about to give account information to a Nigerian prince, MLB will have to come down on him pretty hard. Also, now that this is out there, whatever is on that phone that he was after is likely to come out.
  10. Nothing against the guy for cashing in when he could, but I sure hope he comes back to earth this year and has age related decline from there. (Except perhaps when he is facing the Cubs).
  11. There was a video interview about it: https://www.jsonline.com/videos/sports/mlb/brewers/2019/02/25/spring-training-brewers-pitcher-chase-anderson-pitching/2977960002/ Which is yet another reason why the early results should be taken with a salt lick sized grain of salt. Also, when you only have one point of data, you can draw any regression line through it.
  12. Santana is 36 and had tendon surgery on his pitching hand last year. Many times the finger affected will never get back to normal. He could be a bargain or completely washed-up. At his age I guess only one team wanted to take minimal risk. It's possible others might have given him a minors deal, but he liked his path back to the majors better with the White Sox than the others.
  13. Speaking from a point of ignorance, aren't most huge contracts insured? Insured against injury, not poor performance. I don't know of any insurance policies against poor performance. So they are covered if he becomes Prince Fielder, but not if he becomes Pujolis. Somehow I thing the Padres are going to be on the hook for all of the contract because after the new CBA, the rule changes may make it less desirable for him to opt out.
  14. Hope he never sniffs the playoffs again. I also hope the Padres have some good insurance on that contract, as Machado is one kick of Aguilar away from permanent IL due to dented face.
  15. I had forgotten about that. Thanks for sharing. 1984 was an awfully forgettable season. 1984 was a season to deliberately try to forget. Back to Frank - He had an incredible career as a player, achieving just about everything a player could, broke ground as a manager and was a part of MLB for over 50 years. I hope, if he looked back on his life at the end, he felt satisfied with what he had done.
  16. MLB doesn't want the Brewers to win (or at least not the way they did it last year).
  17. No problem. I wonder if his thumb injury did cause him to change his swing a little - subtly enough that the launch angle did decrease somewhat - and then the injuries in 2017 added a few more changes, which turned what would have been doubles into outs, and homers into doubles. If ten of the loud outs were doubles that got taken away, his .254 average goes to .279, the OBP goes from .313 to .333, and the SLG goes from .469 to .518. So, I think that the right adjustments could provide quite a boost for Braun. It's definitely possible that injuries caused adjustments in his swing. As long as changing his swing back doesn't cause the thumb or other injuries to flare up, it will be a good thing. Otherwise he will just hit the DL quicker this year.
  18. Same here. The Brewers had already denied Stearns an interview with another team. This move will make it near impossible for another team to grab Stearns before the end of his new contract.
  19. Miller Park has a much better ring to it and fits the team much better. However it is in the best interest of the people of Milwaukee and surrounding areas to have the best deal for naming rights that they can get. I suspect if Miller was still a Milwaukee company, they would have tried harder to keep the name. If it had to change, I wish Epic had gone for the rights. Epic Park has a nice ring to it.
  20. *Imagining rooting for a guy I'd rather see Aguilar punch in the face* I feel sick to my stomach.
  21. Well this is a good time for the Brewers to be negotiating a new TV contract, given the excitement of last year and the team building more for this one.
  22. I think they'd consider a FA reliever if he would be one of the top relievers on the team. The problem is that they are too expensive. The Brewers know they will need extra pitchers at times, and being able to option several of them makes the staff effectively 17 or 18.
  23. Not an earth shattering sign, but a potentially useful pickup at almost no risk. One surprising stat is how much better he hit at home, despite home being Petco.
  24. Part of the issue is that you can't play baseball or softball at recess anymore, because they now take a dim view of kids bringing bats to school, or having minimally supervised use of school bats. What Baseball should be doing more of is marketing to parents the value of having their kids play baseball: 1) Kids of all body types are able to play - no need to have super endurance, massive size or height. 2) It's not a collision sport, kids can use their heads for thinking instead of contact with balls or other players, giving a much lower concussion rate: https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/50/5/292 (that report shows baseball has a lower concussion rate than even cheerleading) 3) Played in nice weather. No driving in snow to get to the game, no standing in pouring rain. 4) Encourages math skills. Batting average, on base percentage, slugging percentage ... it's all about the numbers. Follow that up with additional family marketing, like building a baseball-themed hotel / water park near Miller Park, with some package deals for rooms and game tickets, and fun off-season events.
