  1. It's gratifying that in the last two wins, we've had to score a bunch to win---and did. I identified Urias as someone who had much more to give offensively & needed to step up in the second half. Maybe............. This constant 4-5 inning outings from our starters is gettin' old. That could be as big a reason as any for some of the struggles from bullpen guys not named Hader.
  2. Looking at the replay, I think it may have been. The problem was the horrible way it was received. That usually takes a strike away. Very oddly called AB.
  3. I think he saw the 2-0 strike call to Adames & knew it was going to cause a chase on anything up & slightly out of the zone. Which it did. In situations like that where there's nowhere to put the runner, a 2-0 pitch is going to be called a strike unless the umpire absolutely can't. That's just the way it's been for years, umps often "call the count" rather than the pitch.
  4. My wifes' cousin runs one of the best Italian restaurants in Milwaukee, so I'm well aware of the potential benefits of adding Garlick.
  5. Hiura and.........someone other than Valerio. BC82 mapped it out well, as to how he could be used. I'd just be concerned that McCutchen would find himself in CF more than he should be.

  7. We always seem to want to pick up the bullpen arm or two, and I'm always concerned we'll overpay. I guess I've never forgotten the Cooper deal, which at the time really ticked me off. Last years' BP additions didn't exactly thrill me either. You just hope they don't overpay, because it's (BP addition) almost certain to happen. Suqs that we're hearing absolutely nothing about Cousins. I believe Perdomo has started a rehab at least.

  9. There could be organizations out there who value Hedbert Perez very highly. Mediocre season at low-A but still young for his level. We're also quite loaded with OFers. Wouldn't be someone I'd look to move, but you never know. We seem to be trying to establish a new emphasis on contact in the guys we draft & develop, and I see a couple that might have value but not really fit that MO--Lutz & Garcia (although I think Lutz is having an impressive season). Would like to know how this 3-catcher thing shakes out before committing to deal Reetz, but I'd certainly listen. I like Feliciano, but would certainly include him before I'd deal Quero. I think it's safe to say Hiura has been dangled like an oak leaf in mid-November for a number of days now.

  11. I'd dislike giving up Valerio, to be honest. But it can be justified since they're starting to build a little bit of INF depth in the organization, and now you can add Brown to that mix.

  13. This is just an interesting scenario. He fits into the batting order like a glove. Defensively not so much, and this is the organization that's real big on run prevention. On the other hand these are the same folks that had Travis Shaw playing 2B. Due to the odds of swinging a deal being greatly increased b/c of the vax situation I suspect we'll go after him pretty hard.
  14. The temptation might be overwhelming. You know how we just gotta add bullpen arms. Maybe we can get lucky with improved health from Perdomo, Sanchez, & Cousins. I don't know how much better than that group anyone we trade for would be.
  15. I'm hoping Frelick is ready in '23 (I wouldn't dismiss him in '22 if needed, but it's a longshot based mainly on them not upgrading CF in the next 10 days). Feliciano can make things interesting next March if he improves his defense. Agree on Valerio repeating Biloxi due to his age. Really like the quality of the kids' ABs. It would be interesting to see where we'd be if Mitchell & Frelick had been healthy all season. There's usually a "AAAA" guy or two at Nashville so someone (Campbell?) might be repeating next year.
  16. Agreed. The key is identifying what is the best offer when you do sell, and continuing scout & draft well. As far as the latter is concerned I think we're in the best shape we've been in since Jack Zdurencik was here if not ever. My only bugaboo has been on the player development side, but hopefully that was more an effect of the drafting before the mentioned 5-yr period.
  17. He's going through a rough stretch but in no way has this erased all his value. What has happened is, if you are looking to trade him, this is a bad time for him to hit this rough patch. If this does happen it'll be driven more by some team wanting to pony up for him in spite of the recent struggles, than us specifically wanting to make a move. That's why we recently heard that they'll listen to offers. See what someone comes up with; if it isn't enough just say no. I find it hard to believe some of these prospect hauls offered (Guardians & Yankees) are legit.
  18. The Cards have had three or four guys this year who have gotten their first taste of the majors, and all have done well. I think the Nats start with a couple of those guys if they talk Soto w/StL. You would also think they would want a minor league arm (or two) that has potential, something StL might not be comfy dealing at this time. It smells like NY or LA to me too.
  19. That certainly sounds like something that someone in our organization would do. Sadly.
  20. If they don't find true CF help in a trade--and I think it's a strong possibility they won't--put it this way, I suspect someone in the organization has at least floated the idea I would guess. As you said it certainly doesn't fit their MO. I'd put the chances at less than 50-50 but not infinitesimal.
  21. I don't think the sked is all THAT favorable, either. But your last sentence sums it up for me. I think HOW their playing right now is the biggest issue. If that gets cleaned up they can have success regardless of the sked, certainly enough to win this division. If the guys currently here don't play better certainly no acquisitions will make any difference.
  22. I know I enjoyed the game more w/o the DH just for the chess match aspect of it. As far as the Brewers are concerned I think another reason it may hurt is that Counsell, while not many of us are happy with him right now, was pretty darn good at manipulating in-game moves, double switches & the like. That, and the three batter rule for relievers, has homogenized him somewhat.
  23. Great post. I think the entertainment value is largely attached, by this organization anyway, to home runs. It's gotten so skewed, become such an obsession with so many players, that it's skewed in the opposite direction. Who wants to see 3 or 4 home runs in a game, when that's pretty much ALL you see? We played a game called strikeout as kids. Most ABs resulted in home runs, K's or walks. Fun game to play. No way will I pay to watch adults play it though. I DO think they recognize this, by the recent drafts. I'm optimistic the alarming lack of position players coming up here & contributing will soon end. Garrett Mitchell has hit the ground running since rejoining Biloxi; it's stuff like this that keeps me going.
