  1. I don't think there's any scenario in which the Cubs would have actually traded those players to us... Plus we made calls on Scherzer and Reynolds. We were outbid and rebuffed...
  2. People on this very site. It wasn't unanimous for sure, but there were plenty of people who liked the signing at the time, myself included. I don't think anyone expected him to be more than average with the bat, as the majority of his value has always come from his GG defense in the OF. What we didn't expect (and what there was no indication for) was him suddenly becoming the worst hitter in the majors, to the point where it negated all of his defensive value. I know the 2017-2020 version of JBJ would have been quite helpful for us this past season with Cain completely losing it...
  3. With JBJ, A LOT of people liked that signing at the time as insurance for the aging and oft-injured Lorenzo Cain. Nobody foresaw him suddenly ceasing to be a major league hitter at the age of 31. McCutchen, I'll give you. That signing never made sense from the start and became worse by how they decided to persistently hit him cleanup against RHP.
  4. Justin Turner, Brandon Drury, Evan Longoria, Adam Duvall, Robbie Grossman, Wil Myers, Trey Mancini, Edwin Rios, Taylor Rogers, Andrew Chafin, Matt Moore, Cory Knebel, Michael Fulmer, Reyes Moronto, Chad Green, Trevor May, etc. Any of those guys I could see the Brewers being interested in and are not out of their price range. "Second-tier" may be too loose of a term here as not all of these guys are that level, but they represent the next-best options now that the premier free agents have largely signed and would add something to the team for next season.
  5. But those were still FA signings were they not? It seems to me you're telling us that they won't sign anyone. That's where I disagree. And they did sign Yasmani Grandal, Mike Moustakas, and Avi Garcia in the offseasons before that, too. Talk to me when it's late February and all of the second-tier FA options are gone. Because we're never going to be involved in the 10 year megadeals that the big markets have been doling out like candy over the last couple weeks. Do you have particular reason to think they're going to spend more than $20 million less than they did last season, when they have repeatedly said they're going into this season to compete and return to the playoffs?
  6. A little off-topic here. But with all of these WI natives (Jansen, Varsho, Lux, Miller, etc.) floating around in offseason discussions, it makes me so frustrated that my alma matter, the University of Wisconsin, continues to not field a baseball program.
  7. FWIW, our payroll is currently $20 million below what it was this season, and Mark Attanasio said in his season seat-holder Q+A that they are planning on spending around the same amount next year. And then there's the recent rumors of them showing interest in Justin Turner... To assume that we won't add anything in FA at this point isn't really based in reality. Still plenty of second-tier FA options available now that the first-tier options have pretty much all signed. And we were never going to be in on those first-tier options to begin with.
  8. Miller's career minor league slash line: .305/.368/.450. AAA slash line in 2021: .297/.374/.489. Nice. Can see why the Brewers are intrigued considering his speed and defensive versatility. Don't see why we need Jon Singleton on the roster at this point. Him or Trevor Kelley are the next to go imo.
  9. Thing that hurts Brosseau is his subpar defense and inability to play SS, or even 2B. Plus, last season he didn't even hit LHP all that extraordinarily with a .764 OPS. Granted, it's better than what some of our hitters did, but for someone whose calling-card is hitting LHP it's not enough.
  10. Not just Hiura's seat getting warm but also Brosseau's....
  11. WI native (Mequon). Young, controllable, right-handed. 91st percentile 0AA btw 1B and 2B. Also, 90th percentile sprint speed. Doesn't strike out a lot. BUT he doesn't hit the ball all that hard. Hard to be angry, though, when we gave up virtually nothing for him. Defense and speed are going to be a big part of the team this year and going forward.
  12. This. Frelick is an above average CF (55+ grade). He may not be quite at the level of a Garrett Mitchell, but he'll still accumulate plenty of positive defensive value at the position.
  13. I honestly wouldn't mind a reunion with Taylor Rogers to help provide some assurance in the bullpen. His peripheral numbers remain quite strong, and he's only 32, compared to Kimbrel or Boxberger who are in their mid 30s.
  14. Or Wil Meyers for the OF and 1B. 6 LHH is fine against RHP, but it's not exactly going to help us get past this year's woes against LHP.
  15. They also said that contenders don't dabble in Rule 5 picks, when the Phillies, Padres, Mariners, Cardinals, and Mets all made selections this year, so I wouldn't listen to this particular poster for factual analysis on the Rule 5 draft...
  16. I wouldn't exactly say the Brewers "don't need" another OF like Varsho. Ideally, you would only want to rely on one rookie to hold down a starting spot. Yelich will be in LF, but as of now, we're looking at two rookies taking a significant share of starting opportunities at the other two spots. Varsho would be someone who could provide that veteran experience and would be a significant overall upgrade over Renfroe/Taylor as he produced a 5.0 WAR last season. I disagree that people want him simply because he's a "WI boy". He's just a really good ballplayer period who provides you with GG defense in RF and CF with the potential of a 30/20 season while being under team control for four more seasons. At the same time, the cost for Varsho will be quite high for these very reasons. And AZ is demanding non-OF prospects/players in return, which cuts against the strength of our farm system. Something like Ashby, Turang, and Quero would likely be required. Too steep of a price imo. I think we're better served signing a guy like Wil Meyers, a certified lefty masher, to a one year deal to rotate in the OF and 1B with our outfield prospects and Tellez. Taylor could then be traded for a reliever or two.
  17. Not bad. Not bad at all. Continue to be opportunistic on the hitting front (Turner, Meyers?), while focusing on adding a high-leverage option in the pen (Chafin, Rogers, etc.) and we should be pretty close to set.
  18. Good article! I honestly can't think of someone more qualified to highlight the Brewers' "overlooked" prospects than you, clancy. Anyways, I also continue hold out hope for Zavier Warren as his hit tool has been a favorite of mine ever since he was drafted. He struggled this year for sure, but his AFL performance hopefully means he's back on track as a multi-positional OBP specialist.
  19. I don't think Varsho is a realistic option at this point. The asking price for him is justifiably sky high and I'm not sure we have the non-OF prospects necessary to get a deal done. Granted, I thought the same thing about Contreras, so I guess you never know...I'm a huge fan myself of Varsho's.
  20. I think the safest assumption is that at least one of the young outfield prospects will fall short of expectations and that we won't have to worry much about an OF rotation/surplus. Mitchell and Wiemer are the most likely candidates in that sense due to the significant swing and miss in their respective profiles. Regardless, this situation will play out organically, and I doubt it will be as difficult a decision as some are anticipating.
  21. FWIW, Stripling signed with the Giants today for 2/25. Nice job on the contract numbers.
  22. Aroldis Chapman is a huge no for me, especially at $12 million. Not only is he radioactive and a potential cancer in the clubhouse, but his velocity and peripheral numbers are on a sharp decline over the past few years. All he really has going for him at this point is past performance and reputation, which is quickly becoming a distant memory. If you're shelling out that kind of money for Chapman (and Stripling), why not just bring back Taylor Rogers, whose underlying numbers are a lot more promising than Chapman's?....
