  1. There's some good points here, particularly the seeming lack of a concerted offseason strategy. As another poster stated in a different thread, it's been a lot of zigging and zagging by this front office. However, they have still managed to clear about $20 million from last year's payroll, taking into account projected arbitration figures. That's a meaningful amount of wiggle room that they lacked at the beginning of the offseason. They just have to use it. With plenty of free agent and trade options remaining, I'm not concerned that they'll decide to pocket the savings just yet. In addition, one injury-plagued season in one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in the majors doesn't change the fact that Winker is a better hitter than Renfroe. 123 career wRC+ for Winker vs. 109 career wRC+ for Renfroe. Renfroe's all-power, high strikeout/low OBP approach is the exact thing that has plagued this offense over the last couple of years. Compare that to Winker, who walked in the 99th percentile last season with a well above average contact rate...
  2. It's a question. But this FO has earned the benefit of the doubt with their ability to identify pitching talent imo.

  4. Box, sure. But Gott and Suter were literally replacement level pitchers last year....They seem want more quantity than they had last season, which I agree with.

  6. Other than Hader, who had already been traded at the deadline, who left that we'll really be missing? Boxberger, I guess. He was certainly valuable to us. But who else? On the other hand, we've added a number of depth arms, which is what hurt us last season when we were forced to trot out guys like Alexander and Kelley....

  8. Did the Angels trade not happen? See, I can do smirky questions, too.

  10. They've been moving him off C, but he still plays there from time to time. 31 G/18 S in 2021.

  12. From MLBTR, "Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports roughly 10 clubs have been in touch with Hazen and company regarding at least one of the team’s outfielders. Piecoro lists the Yankees, Brewers, Blue Jays, A’s, Marlins, White Sox and Reds as clubs with interest." Very interesting considering our existing stockpile of young outfielders. Daulton Varsho sure would look good in a Brewers' uniform, with the rare ability to play elite defense at RF, CF, and C.... View full rumor

  14. I doubt it. The catching rotation as currently rostered would be the worst in the majors. A team with designs on contending as the Brewers are cannot afford to go forward with that. If anything, the fact that they recognize it is a problem is a promising sign as opposed to the typical "we're comfortable with what we have on the roster" line.

  16. Vazquez obviously makes the most sense on a two year deal as you wouldn't have to give up prospects and he would be able to help form a bridge to Quero. However, with the markets rumored to be involved and the trajectory of the FA market this offseason, I don't think it'll happen. Murphy is the top trade candidate. However, the asking price there is enormous, with the A's reportedly having asked for Nootbar, Donovan, Graceffo, plus from the Cards. For the Brewers, that would be like Frelick, Turang, and Gasser as a starting point, with Ashby perhaps having to be included as well. Again, unlikely. Which brings us back to Toronto and Danny Jansen. He should be about half the cost of Murphy and would likewise be able to manage the C position until Quero arrives. Jansen also carries with him some upside, considering he's been a backup his whole career and has still put up a 123 OPS+ over the past two seasons with above average batted ball metrics. I'd give Toronto an OF not named Chourio or Frelick, along with Eric Lauer and a lottery ticket. That's a fair trade for both sides imo. D'Arnaud would also be more than acceptable to me. It's just a question of whether the Braves are going to trade him, or if they want to keep him and play Contreras at DH or in the OF. He should cost around the same or a little less than Jansen, but also has more downside as he's already 33.
  17. Ah, yes, the old labeling an opinion that doesn't perfectly align with yours as a "joke" trick...Nice demonstration of your supposed commitment to pluralism on the forum. It's far from an unreasonable take. The Brewers ran away with the division in 2021 and were in first place for a large chunk of 2022, before injuries to their pitching staff caught up with them and team morale was decimated by the Hader trade. I don't entirely agree with it, but it's a fair argument/opinion.
  18. Yeah, trying to think of a comparison for Essegian, I initially thought Herro. But the more I think about it, the more JJ Reddick comes to my head. Says a lot about his confidence and swagger on the court.
  19. James McCann, as in the guy who's posted a -0.3 WAR the past two years and who posted a sparkling .538 OPS this year? Hard pass. It's Vazquez, Murphy, D'Arnaud, or Jansen or bust for me..
  20. I think if Wahl can find his late-season form from last year we have a great shot at repeating for the BIG title. Hepburn and Crowl have really stepped up lately. And then Essegian continues to be the bucket-getter this team needs. Klesmit is also up there with Showalter and Gasser as high-level glue guys who can defend and score when called upon. Love how this team is shaping up.
  21. Marquette doesn't count as a road game to you? I get it's still in Wisconsin, but that's always a hostile crowd...
  22. This crap never ends....
  23. Thank you! The argument you are responding to is what the historians call "revisionism". Amazing how the Hader trade has warped some peoples' minds. Nobody is saying it proved to be a success, but let's at least stick to the facts here.
  24. It doesn't matter. It's all part of the record. You said he outperformed them. He literally didn't. That's just revisionism. If you take any relief pitcher's worst outings out of the equation, their numbers will obviously look much better. Again, we were under .500 from Labor Day to the deadline. That was WITH Hader. We then proceeded to win at the exact same pace without him. So, no, not having Hader didn't cost us the playoffs.
  25. Hader w/ Padres: 7.31 ERA, -1.0 WAR Rogers w/ Brewers: 5.48 ERA, -0.5 WAR Bush w/ Brewers: 4.30 ERA, -0.4 WAR Hader didn't outperform our "scrap heap" in deadline trade returns.
