  1. Granted they just scored 5 runs in the first inning, but the Cardinals "A" lineup right now includes a washed-up, 42 year old (at least) Albert Pujols hitting cleanup, with every one of their hitters except for Arenado, Goldschmidt, and Edman sucking really bad. Not that our offense is elite by any means, but I just don't see how, unless they manage to summon more of that devil magic, they will be able to keep up with us and our top-notch pitching over the course of the season. Could end up being another smooth summer ride to a division title....
  2. No trading Burnes. Woodruff maybe, but not Burnes. The guy is probably the best pitcher in baseball right now given DeGrom's continued injury woes. You just don't trade a guy like that with multiple years of control remaining if you're trying to contend. Even when Chris Sale was traded, the White Sox were in complete tear-down mode.
  3. Not bad by any stretch. Better now than in the postseason. Hopefully this is the last we hear of that, and it's back to business as usual in the later innings.
  4. If it was something serious with Hader, you would think that he'd have gone on the IL before the game. Also, if he was injured and unavailable, why would he be in the bullpen and not the dugout? Thinking they may have just wanted to get Williams some work instead since he's hasn't pitched for as long as Hader...
  5. Heck, let's get Ethan Small in that bullpen, too, while we're at it!
  6. Playing at an all-star level right now. Perfect fit for this team in that he can take over for McCutchen at DH against right-handed pitchers, while providing you occasional starts at first base and even at corner outfield. Cost won't be prohibitive as he is a free agent after the season. Felix Valerio should be enough to get it done, right? Maybe throw in a lottery ticket as well?
  7. Ashby pulling a 2017-2018 Josh Hader tonight....
  8. Wonder how long it will be before Adames gets his first day off of the year now that Urias is back. My money is on Thursday afternoon against Hunter Greene.
  9. Oh yeah, JBJ is totally gonna hit a game-winning grand slam against Hader or something. I fully expect it.
  10. Is it a rule that former Brewers have to hit really well against us when we play them? Vogelbach, Gamel, now Moustakas.....
  11. Yeah I figured. Just has a high BABIP and a higher walk-rate than normal due to his first start against the Cubs. Nice part is we're not reliant on him to have a great start every time through the rotation like we were in 2020, when we had guys like Lindblom and Anderson.
  12. As far as trading Woodruff...This winter, maybe. This season, no way. With our pitching, the time to go for it is now, and there is no prospect that is untouchable in my view, maybe with the exception of Wiemer.
  13. I think Woody will be just fine. FIP of 2.65, 11 K's so far tonight, 0 walks....
  14. I'll give the guy who has led us to our greatest heights in franchise history the benefit of the doubt. However, you are right in that today would be as good of a day as any to give Hiura a shot and McCutchen a day off. What is the point of having Hiura on the roster if you're only going to play him against lefties, which is his weaker platoon side? Just doesn't make sense.
  15. Honestly, were things really all that bad in 2018-2020, before the sticky stuff ban and the introduction of the deadened baseballs? Sure, pitchers had an advantage in being able to better grip the ball and increase its movement and spin-rate, but it was pretty much negated by the fact that when hitters made contact, the ball was going to travel further. I say, let's just go back to how things were before, and then next year, go ahead and ban the shift....
  16. Yeah, it's getting close to the point where Kelenic for Hiura would be a fair deal, with just about the only thing going for Kelenic being his limited # of major league at bats and his relatively recent prospect shine. And even Hiura has had more established success in the major leagues than anything Kelenic has shown thus far.
  17. Martinez is only signed through this season, so you're right in that he could be a good fit. However, the fact that he also hits right-handed and is pretty much unable to play in the field anymore must be considered, too. I would be interested for the right price.
  18. Generally, I would agree with you, but Burnes is looking like an all-time talent these days, and he's still fairly young (27). Another thing to consider is how well elite starting pitchers are aging, with Verlander, Scherzer, and DeGrom the clearest examples. And he's not a guy that's reliant on overwhelming velocity either. I would extend him above any of our other players in a heartbeat.
  19. You do realize that Devers has even less team control than Woodruff, right? So, it should really be the other way around, and that doesn't even take into consideration the fact that elite starters tend to be a more prized commodity on the trade market, simply because there are so few of them. Like others have mentioned, just look at what the White Sox got for Sale...Though, I agree with you in that it would be asinine to move Woodruff in-season.
  20. Interesting. Really liked what Brosseau provided against left-handers. Looks like Hiura is staying up for now. If that is indeed the case, Counsell really needs to change the way he's playing him and get him more at-bats against right-handed pitchers, rather than playing him almost exclusively against left-handed pitchers. Hiura's reverse splits just don't support that usage.
  21. Nevermind, Arenado with a three-run homer to put the Cards up 7-5. Onto the Reds!
  22. Cards on the verge of losing a series to the D-Backs, so that's nice to see....
  23. Oh well. We're really good, the Cubs aren't so good. Reds coming in, so opportunity for another series win at minimum.
