That's never been his strength. He's just never going to be a mauler at LT. Caleb Jones would probably be better in that regard right now. But we also run an outside zone scheme and he doesn't need to move guys off the line. He needs to be assignment sure and take the DL where they're going, create cutback lanes, and he's back to being very good at that. Again, week 6 he was almost all the way back to playing at an elite level. The very last problem right now is David Bakhtiari's play. Packers OL Run Blocking Grades this season; LT: David Bakhtiari: 80.8 (High Quality) LG: Jon Runyan: 35.9 (Bad) C: Josh Myers: 62.9 (Average) RG: Royce Newman: 50.1 (Below Avg) RT: Elgton Jenkins: 69.0 (Above Avg) Week 6 Pass blocking grade; Overall grade week 6; I'm as big a fan of Yosh Nijman as there is, but at his best, he's been David Bakhtiari at HIS worst. The gap between the two is massive. Maybe it's expectations. People expect Bakh to just erase the top edge rushers and he hasn't quite reached his pre-injury status, but he's been pretty damn good. Yosh is a freak athlete who came into the league with absolutely terrible technique and he's just continued to get better, but it's still a big drop off from Bakh to him. Yosh needs to be playing RT almost exclusively in practice right now so they can kick Jenkins back inside. His pass blocking has been a problem...and more importantly, Newman's has been bad as well.

He was literally the highest graded left tackle in the league last week. He's been the Packers highest graded pass blocking OL this year. Did I miss something? The guy just practiced 5 straight days...which, granted, people may not care about or say he SHOULD practice everyday, but given their plan for him and just the fact that it's the NFL and veteran All Pro's can afford less practice time, this seems like a...bizarre time to cut bait on Bakhtiari.

That is...surprising and incredibly impressive. I didn't realize he was that disciplined of a hitter. Some of the quickest hands I've ever seen and the obvious comp when Rickie Weeks came along. Seems to me like both sides handled this situation poorly...and the 20 year old phenom is generally going to be the one who ends up looking bad. I know there were accusations of him faking an injury after playing poorly, then being sent down...playing poorly there and then him insisting his foot was in fact hurt, then later realizing they'd missed a fracture in his foot. 30 years ago now, so assigning blame is kinda pointless. With that said...I still harbor a great deal of resentment to Bando for ruining my childhood and forcing Molitor out of Milwaukee! I don't know if that should actually be in blue.

The '06 Cards, the '07 Rockies, the '21 Braves, the '87 Twins(Which won 85 games and got outscored during the regular season)... Every year we see teams that get in and beat better teams. So the whole, "it wouldn't have mattered anyway, the Brewers couldn't win anyway," logic just...doesn't track with most of Baseball history.
-
I agree with what you said about it being very difficult statistically to evaluate QB play in CFB given all the variables, and he's not in the same group as Young, Stroud, Hooker, Richardson, Williams. But give him Dieter, Dietzen, Edwards, Benzschwael, Biadasz...and then Taylor, Davis, Cephus, Ferguson, Pryor, just the talent Hornibrook had and I think there'd be a pretty significant difference in play. Rudolph as our OL Coach really set this program back. They'd better not let someone hire Bostad away in the near future. He should be a staple of this program...regardless of the HC(who I'm pretty certain will be Leonhard). That was a whole different brand of...stu..differing opinions/trolling.

They were 16-3 vs the Nationals including going 6-1 vs the Nats in the final month when they were 11-14 overall. So 5-13 excluding the worst team in baseball in Sept. The Nats were a 55 win team(by far the worst in baseball). The Marlins were a 69 win team, they won 12 vs them. So that's 28 wins vs two terrible teams. We were 36-33 the 2nd half of the season Phil-38-32 Better in the final month. Schwarber was a 2.2 WAR player. So the Brewers finished stronger while the Phillies were terrible in the final months...and Phillies fans were lamenting how terrible their team was as well. There was VERY little difference between the two teams, there's no way to couch this that there was any significant difference. There's no twisting this...there was not a big gap between the two teams. The Phillies making the playoffs game down to two games we went into the last at bats with a lead and blew the game making us 2-4 rather than 4-2 vs the Phillies and 86-87 wins. There's just no dressing it up. The Brewers, Phillies and Pads were all VERY evenly matched this year. For all the players you can name on the Phils, the overwhelmingly have warts are...just weren't that good.
-
This is objectively false based on the 162 games played... It's also false based on the "those teams were hot going in," as the Phillies were awful in Sept. The Brewers are absolutely right there with the Phillies and just listing players on Philly doesn't change that. Castellanos has a sub .700 OPS. Segura had a worse OPS than Wong. Tellez is comparable to Hoskins... Burnes, Woodruff, Lauer, Peralta, Bush, Boxberger, Milner... There's no argument where you can say the Brewers and the Phillies weren't comparable this season or that it's "not particularly close."

Yes...absolutely. If Stearns reason for trading Hader was basically 2 bad outings in which he gave up 9 ERs in 1/3 or an IP over two games...that'd be an absurd knee jerk reaction...and how he threw vs the Red Sox in his last outing when he was overpowering hitters(or the last 4 overall when he had a .36 FIP). Now...this would be silly to use such a small sample size, but...again, yes, I do believe that. If Stearns saw Josh Hader have a couple of bad outings and THAT was the impetus behind the trade, he's not the GM I want moving forward. Of course I don't believe that. I also don't believe that Hader "personally" lost 2-1 games or 3-2 games. But, if he did, then did he "personally" win the 15 games he came in and closed out that we won by 1 run? Or the 10 2-run games? I don't think Stearns "torpedoed" the team, if the argument is he traded him due to a bad stretch, that pretty much flies in the face of EVERYTHING they've said and every justification given for the Hader trade.

For me...I just don't care. It feels like a lot of righteous indignation by other teams who cheat in a litany of ways...they were just the dumbest. Anyone find it odd that the Dodgers hit two late HRs of Jeffress splitters...which were NEARLY unhittable that season? Very likely flips the series? And about a dozen other teams that were accused by various people within the game; https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/oakland-as-pitcher-chris-bassitt-says-astros-werent-only-team-in-mlb-stealing-signs/#:~:text=Jeff Jones of the Belleville, using video to decode signs.

I thought they were gonna do that years ago with all the abandon warehouses/factories. Hopefully they move forward in the future. The Brewers will never be able to spend like those other larger market teams or even the Cards/Pads, but I think they can be a bit more competitive in the immediate future with more money coming in.
-
-They STILL have a lot of talent in that system. Nothing like they've had, but...a couple of arms with big upside and at least a few top 100 prospects even after giving up the biggest prospect haul ever? -And I agree with you on the other aspects...mostly. The Brewers are boxed in. The Pads have two big market teams 2 hours away, we've got two 90 minutes away. They have Mexico to the South...but they have not been very popular in Mexico(8th most popular team apparently). That means they have room to grow and probably why they've started and will continue to play some games there. So the potential for growth is...exponentially higher than ours. It feels like if you go more than an hour away from Milwaukee, most people don't really care about the team unless they're in the playoffs. I don't know if that's true or my perception, but either way, the Pads clearly can do a whole lot better moving forward than we can. -I was fine with the Hader trade as well. The Lamet aspect of it annoyed the hell out of me, the Rosenthal trade made me scratch my head(I tried to be optimistic). But the trade certainly made sense. We're pretty thin on pitching(though also not a fan of the Bush trade for that reason, but...over and done with). The logic made sense...you get another lefty reliever, you add a second SU man in Bush, then hope for the best with Rosenthal. That's 3 guys who teamed with Williams could make a nice BP. Just didn't work out.

Right. This is the massive difference. The investments in other revenue sources, the ticket prices are...3X the price IIRC, maybe even 4. Also it's SD. I love our fine City, but if you're not from here(hell, even if you are) if you have millions of dollars on the table from either place, SD is usually going to win out. Plus, it's home to FAR more American born players. It's certainly not as simple as market size. https://www.bisnow.com/los-angeles/news/mixed-use/san-diego-padres-tishman-speyer-tailgate-park-redevelopment-35-million-112135

They're not really. They're threading the needle, but they're not giving away assets for short term like the Rams did. They're being aggressive, but they're definitely balanced long term and short term more than the Rams. Their cap situation is pretty healthy. Some big cap hits, but they are pretty balanced. They could create a ton of cap space by restructuring some deals, but with Lance in his 2nd year, they're fine there. They gave up a lot...but they also got a lot back. McCaffery is like a WRer/RB hybrid when healthy and I can just imagine what they're going to throw out there with Deebo, McCaffery, Kittle, Juice and company. 2023 picks-Already gave up their 1st for Lance Third-round pick Third-round pick Fifth-round pick Fifth-round pick Sixth-round pick Seventh-round pick Seventh-round pick Seventh-round pick 2024 First-round pick Second-round pick Third-round pick Third-round pick Fourth-round pick Sixth-round pick Seventh-round pick Plus, good chance they end up with 3rd round picks for Jimmy G next year and...as of now, DeMeco Ryans is one of the favorites to get a HCing job. That'd mean another 3rd and a 2025 3rd.
-
I would mostly agree. I'd argue that his internal clock seems inconsistent and some smaller things like that, but I'd say...in context, he's looked very talented and he's been pretty good this year. I just...would LOVE to see him with an elite OL and a JT type back(I guess Allen is to be fair). But an OL that can just block people, pick up simple stunts. Royce Newman just cannot--...err...sorry, wrong Wisconsin Football team, but same complaints. They can't pick up stunts, blitzes. Graham Mertz could go on and have a poor man's Matt Ryan type career and I wouldn't be totally shocked. I just don't know how good he is and I don't think others do either. I don't think you can. If you have WRers who you could throw a hitch route to and they could take it 80, or a guy who could just BLOW guys away off the LOS like...say Bama did with Smith, Jeudy, Ruggs(just asking for one)...that could help him enough. But just a basically AJ Dillon style RB? That's not good enough with this OL and receiving core. I DO know there are not 150 QBs who are better than him.
-
And Jrue was BRUTAL offensively. But Carter looked good. The new defensive...scheme, ideology, whatever you'd like to call it, that seemed effective. Very few open 3's. Gave up some layups we otherwise wouldn't have. Really hope Beauchamp is going to be part of the rotation early in the season and tonight was an exception. Otherwise, nice opening night.
-
Huh...that's quite a bit to give up, but he's cheap and he could be a monster in that system. Now we need to go get DJ Moore from them. And then somehow try to figure out how to either get them to restructure his deal or just not worry about his salary until next year. 49ers realize how winnable the NFC is.
-
We sent him there as an OFer though. Isn't that how it works? Each team sends certain positions. I don't recall if it's something where they go in order like a fantasy draft and draft for positions or if teams are just assigned a position, but I was under the impression we weren't sending him as a 2B beacuse...that wasn't our position this year, but that they'd still try and get him some games in there. Seems pretty unlikely they'd be moving him to CF and give up on him as an INFer given the construction of our farm system.

Robocaller’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint: Reboot Option
UpandIn replied to Robocaller's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
A tank job unlike any other? No...I don't think it would be. I also don't think they'd lose 100 games if you took Burnes and Adames out and replaced them with that group. Though it likely wouldn't be competitive in 2023. Either way, definitely not a tank job. -
Robocaller’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint: Reboot Option

Even after you graduate a lot of the players, IF you made this Dodgers trade, you're still looking at a loaded system the following year. Chourio, Quero, Black, Misioroski, Avina, Brown Jr and then Cartaya could be a top 10 along with Chourio, I expect Quero in the top ~40 or so next year. The biggest problem is the Dodgers just aren't Padres like desperate. I think this is one of those trades that's equal on the trade machines and...makes sense in a vacuum, but I don't see the Dodgers giving up...possibly 36+ years of pretty premium quality prospects for 4 years of Adames and Burnes collectively and then what kinda amounts to throw in's with Feliciano and Taylor. Maybe we go back to the Padres. They continue to draft well and have Merrill, Lysko, Snelling and some other nice talent STILL(as much as I like the Brewers recent drafted philosophy, I'd like to see them get a little more aggressive with young arms). But again, as much as I want to see this team add a bat and run it back next year with their core, some smaller tweaks and our young guys, I don't think I could pass on that particular trade if the Dodgers were willing to. But when they can realistically spend ~300M on payroll, I think it's more likely they would go out and add a couple of those TOR arms like deGrom, Verlander, Rodon(or or two of those players) as well as either re-signing Turner or maybe they sign another SS. Correa would make a lot of sense for them given his age and productivity(plus I believe his tools will age better as Turner's speed is so vital and if he has to move off SS, it'd likely be to 2B or even the OF whereas I think Correa would make a GG 3B with his hands, range(even if diminished) and arm. No half measures though. If you're going to bring this squad back, go out and make a serious offer to Abreu. We've heard Attanasio talk about how they could fit ANY player or trade into the budget, not just this year, but the next 2-3 years. So instead of adding Soto and giving up equal value in prospects(which we lacked) then go after Abreu and push that payroll into the ~140-150 range...which I believe is still a reasonable range with the increasing revenue across the league. -

LOL...I can't read. I don't know why I just saw Burnes, Taylor and Feliciano. OK then...that's actually a pretty plausible return for the two then. Walker Buehler, SP Diego Cartaya, C (AAA-MLB) Miguel Vargas, 3B-1B-OF Ryan Pepiot, SP Michael Grove, SP (stash in Nashville) Bobby Miller, SP (stash in Nashville) Maddux Bruns, SP (start in A or A+) If you're actually gonna re-load, that's a whoole lot of talent. This would be a mix of that 2018 staff with a deep, deep BP and a couple of TOR arms(if you kept Woodruff-in which case, this trade actually makes more sense to me). Gonna gut the offense, BUT, if you could fit Busch in there? Turang is hardly a sure thing at SS offensively, but if you can at least put Vargas, Busch on that IF, you'd have a deep, young team. Who knows what the staff will look like, but they'd at least be able to grow with our young position prospects. You're going to piss the fan base off quite a bit, but it could be intriguing in 2024. Woodruff Buehler Miller Peralta Pepiot Ashby(or swap him and Gasser and he actually could be a potential Hader like multi-inning reliever). C-Cartaya/Quero 1B-Busch 2B-Vargas SS-Turang 3B-Black LF-Frelick CF-Mitchell RF-Wiemer DH-Yelich BP-Williams Uribe Grove Stone Gasser That's like a 70M payroll, you keep an anchor in your rotation and you've got some players to potentially flip for position prospects. Buehler for instance, get him healthy and he's an ace. So you either try and give him a Glasnow type extension(probably on the low end) or you flip him as well. Lauer, Urias, Tellez. 2023 would be an interesting year. Potentially the top Farm System in the game, a lot of growing pains, but it'd get interesting after that. I'd be handing out Braves like extensions like Bobbleheads(to those who'd take them). Interesting idea anyway. -

Definitely conflicts with what Stearns said, but...I don't agree there's no point in Buehler. TBH, I saw that trade and I thought he was factoring Buehler's injury in as that's a...BIG haul for Burnes. Just Cartaya, Vargas, Pepiot, Miller is a whole lot. But that trade is actually pretty interesting with Buehler. See how he recovers, maybe a Tyler Glasnow type deal if he's on schedule and recovering next year. He's got elite stuff. I don't think the Dodgers would include Cartaya in that trade, but...even then, still a pretty nice return. -
Brewers Payroll Preview: How Much can they Spend?
UpandIn replied to John Bonnes's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Burnes and Woodruff are 27 and 29. Nola and Wheeler are 29 and 32. Not sure how the argument could be made that they've "burnt their peaks."
