  1. bradyo, just curious, you get on Jack Z. for drafting high school players, yet you advocate Maybin over Braun. Did you just think Maybin would be that special? My $.02 here, you may not agree with Jack Z. from a philosophical standpoint, as I believe many here do not. However, I don't think you can argue with how he has rebuilt the farm system from the dark days of Sal Bando. To many it may seem like it was easy because they had so many high picks, but remember, they had a ton of high picks in the Bando years and basically did nothing with them.
  2. Now they can't hit Brad (*^$&*% Halsey! They'll be lucky to win 55 games this season.
  3. Vargas sucks. This season will be a disaster.
  4. If Tampa would do that deal, Melvin should be on the phone with them right now. To me this is just more evidence why Steve Phillips is on TV and not a GM anymore.
  5. Colby, I've been digging around on college players and am wondering what you see Savery doing as a pro. Pitch or hit?
  6. Can someone give me a clue? What was Roy and Pam's song, the one Roy paid Scrantonicity $20 to play?
  7. Once again I cannot make it. My wife will be out of town and I will be on Dad duty. I'm starting to think the rest of BF.net is conspiring to not meet with me face-to-face. C'mon people, I'm really not that bad.
  8. I haven't bought a new CD in a while, but, thanks to itunes, I have been able to listen again to the brilliance of Jack Mack and the Heart Attack.
  9. Final projection is in: Community Projection for Rickie Weeks: 145 games, 537 at-bats, 158 hits, .294 average, 31 doubles, 6 triples, 20 homers, 74 RBI, 55 walks, 116 strikeouts, 28 steals. Looks a bit optimistic to me, although I don't doubt that Weeks is capable of this if he stays healthy. But I was thinking more about a 2008 breakout than an '07. I agree with Sickels' logic there, but am hoping for these numbers this season.
  10. How, precisely, does it keep the differentiation intact? It doesn't give you exact numbers of XBH or anything, but the differentiation remains intact this way. ISO does not correlate in any way to number of extra base hits. It gives something of a percentage of total bases derived from extra base hits. So, a hitter who has 10 XBH, all doubles, will score lower than someone who has 10 XBH, all HRs. By your method the 2 scores would be the same, by the ISO method the HR hitter will score better than the doubles hitter. Simplistic, but hopefully understandable. Again, if you are looking to find the XBH percentage, keep using your method. But ISO is a great method for determining a level of power for an hitter.
  11. Elijah Dukes arrested January 15 for misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He's fortunate that he is talented or there is no way Tampa Bay would continue to put up with his "antics." Link to story Dukes' supposedly said to the officer, "You're gonna arrest me for a little sack of weed?" Edit: to add quote
  12. I'm particularly surprised by the predictions for Fielder and Hart. 900 OPS for Prince and 870 for Corey. Seems a bit high. If they hit like that they will be rock stars in Milwaukee.
  13. By the way, how did Katie Holmes, a simply spectacularly beautiful young woman, marry such a complete idiot? Wait, I thought she married Tom Cruise.
  14. But just out of curiousity when was the last time a top pitching prospect of ours had a major arm surgery like this and then pitched effictively for "THE BREWERS" after recovery? None have pitched effectively for any stretch of time, but D'Amico did have one brilliant season after having multiple surgeries, including a capsular shift, IIRC.
  15. Wouldn't the 3 team deal be a big win for the Pirates. If I had to choose from Gonzalez, Cabrera and La Roche; I'd have to take La Roche. Or am I crazy?
  16. (Sarcasm alert) Wow, he looks like he has no thumb on his right (pitching) hand. Did the Brewers really draft a guy with no thumb?
  17. One note, I know these are preliminary and won't exactly match what is in the book, but Gallardo is one of a very few A's this year. For reference, Hochevar and Matt Garza were both A- s.
  18. Kudos to John for using the older logo and the Laverne and Shirley picture. How many posters even know who Laverne and Shirley are?
  19. Bubba Franks
  20. I still think they have Daric Barton rated too highly. For a short, fat, unathletic DH with questionable power, non-existent defensive skills, and more character flaws than a typical Bruce Willis character, I have a hard time believing in him. IMO, Barton on pretty much any other team would be looked at as an "almost-bust" in the sense that he's really declined last year. Granted, he was only 21 at AAA, and last season was not consistent with his track record, but he doesn't really have a position and, at this point, doesn't hit with enough power to be an All-Star caliber 1B/DH. I think he gets a bit of a pass because he's one of Billy Beane's guys, which is fine. But at this point I'm skeptical that he'll ever amount to much. DHonks, just wondering what the character issues are that you referred to. I haven't heard that about him. Do you have insider knowledge from the AFL?
  21. TLB, take it easy. We fear change.
  22. splitter, just wanted to say thanks for pointing that story out, as I really enjoyed it. Would be interested in picking up the book mentioned in the article, if anyone might know where to get a copy.
  23. They are next. Oakland was posted late last night (Wednesday), so I wouldn't expect the Brewers to be up before Thursday afternoon. Hopefully John hasn't decided to take a Christmas break now. I doubt it, as I know he's under a deadline to get the book to the publisher.
  24. Would he prefer to be in SF, where he would be an hour or 90 minutes away from home by plane? That will probably be the key to his decision making. I think it's more important where a player's wife wants to be. They are the ones at home all the time, where the player is on the road for almost 8 months a year counting spring training. That being said, with plane travel and an extra million dollars, there wouldn't be much of a difference between SF and MIL.
