  1. Well I imagine they are trying to see if Contreras can catch Burnes in the playoffs. I talked about it at the end of the game thread yesterday. During the regular season it doesn't really matter but come the playoffs when Burnes is pitching 25+% of our games, it becomes a bit problematic to have to include Caratini in the lineup especially with how he's hit the last 2 months.
  2. WOAH. Conteras is catching Burnes today. Don't think that has happened since late April/early May
  3. If we do win the WC, I will be very thankful to face the Dodgers and not the Braves. Dodgers are a great team but the Braves are just in a different class in my opinion.
  4. Mitchell is both a better baserunner and faster human? Wiemer isn't anything special running the bases. These are their MLB SB/CS numbers and BsR numbers. Mitchell - 44 G, 130 PA, 9 SB to 0 CS, 3.0 BsR Wiemer - 131 G, 410 PA, 11 SB to 4 CS, 0.7 BsR Mitchell is significantly better.
  5. He swung 10 times and whiffed 6 times. He hasn't played in games in months so that's not surprising, but he only has 8 games left at AAA to rehab. There's no way he gets the bat up to speed after missing almost 6 months of baseball.
  6. Already started yesterday. He went 0-4 with 3 K’s. Looked pretty lost up at the plate but I guess that’s not surprising for how much time he’s missed. I think at this point he’s probably just trending to be a pinch runner type role in the playoffs
  7. I’ve seen speculation that the Angels aren’t IL’ing him because they are so marginally below the luxury tax line they sending him to the IL and calling up someone to replace him could push them over the luxury tax line. If that’s true it’s an embarrassment for the franchise and league.
  8. For what it is worth, I am most definitely not advocating we force Contreras on Burnes at this point. We just have to reap what we have sowed and keep rolling with Caratini. I’m just saying it’s frustrating that we will be trotting out a weaker playoff lineup in 25+% of our playoff games because Burnes gave up on Contreras catching him after a few starts.
  9. Anyone. Nobody on the team should have demanded Caratini be their personal catcher. Miley just had glowing reviews for how Contreras has matured and grown behind the plate this year. For a team that wins on the margins having to start a guy like Caratini in the playoffs could have some consequences. You go from Taylor, Canha, Contreras playing to Caratini, Canha, Contreras playing. Here are their wRC+ since the ASB Contreras - 133 Canha - 118 Taylor - 116 Caratini - 58 That’s a pretty sizeable drop off going from Taylor/Canha in the lineup to Caratini. With the playoff schedule this season how many games do you think Caratini would have actually caught? NLDS has 3 scheduled off days and the NLCS and WS have 2 scheduled off days.
  10. I feel like you’re missing the point. Corbin gave up on Contreras very early in the season and demanded Caratini be his personal catcher. For the regular season that’s fine, but it’s it makes us weaker in the playoffs when Burnes is going to be starting over 25% of our games. Game 1 of the playoffs instead of having Tyrone’s defense in RF with Canha at DH and Contreras behind home plate we get Canha in RF (worse defensively), Caratini at C (worse defensively and offensively), and Contreras at DH. With the scheduled off days in the playoffs, Caratini would have been lucky to start even a single game and now he will be starting a big chunk of them. That’s a lot of PA to be forced to a 58 wRC+ hitter since the all star break.
  11. Wade Miley had glowing reviews for Contreras tonight. How he totally changed up the gameplan after the first inning and got Miley back on track. I was so happy reading that then it made me think how annoying it is that Burnes demanded Caratini as his personal catcher. It basically eliminates the DH for 25% of our postseason games because Caratini will be catching and Contreras will be the DH
  12. Wood Ducks walk it off on a sac fly to RF. Carolina's season is over.
  13. Yerlin Rodriguez comes in to pitch the bottom of the 11th on 0 days rest. He throws a wild pitch on the first pitch so the winning run is now on 3rd base with 0 outs. Going to need a special inning to send this to the 12th.
  14. Guilarte strikes out looking...he strands the bases loaded. Wood Ducks coming up in the bottom of the 11th with 2,3,4 due up. It's officially danger zone for the Mudcats.
  15. Barrios draws a walk. Bases loaded. Sounds like Guilarte is pinch hitting for Mercado. Time to avenge himself for the error last night.
  16. Avina draws a walk. Barrios up to the plate. How about a gapper to bring in 2 runs?
  17. Baez and Hall both with lazy flyouts to open the 11th. Avina up with 2 outs and the Manfred runner still on 2B.
  18. Costello gets the ground out. To the 11th inning we head. Might be notable that the Brewers have only used 4 pitchers tonight and the Wood Ducks have used 6. Might see some guys on short rest for the Wood Ducks the deeper this game goes.
  19. Not ideal hitting the 9 hitter with a pitch to get the top of the order up with the game on the line.
  20. Costello gets a lineout to LF then gives up a single up the middle and the game is tied 3-3. The runner advanced to 2B on the throw home so it's now 1 out and winning run on 2B.
  21. Mudcats get 1 run in the top of the 10th. We head to the bottom of the 10th with a 1 run lead. Costello going back out. Hopefully he can prevent the Manfred runner from scoring.
  22. Costello gets a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th with 3 groundouts. To extra innings we go!
  23. Mudcats get absolutely shut down in the top of the 9th with the side striking out. Need this one to go to extras. (Really dumb the Manfred runner could end up deciding a playoff series)
  24. The leadoff walk proves no problem for Costello who gets 2 lazy fly balls to the OF and a strikeout. We head to the 9th tied 2-2.
  25. Costello walks the leadoff hitter on 5 pitches. Wood Ducks go ahead run on 1st and Sibrian has had issues throwing the ball down to 2B tonight.
