  1. I may as well take this opportunity to remind people of the politics forum, as this topic has the potential to get pretty wild.
  2. Since most of the greats have disappeared into the aether, and I'm too lazy to look through everything, I'll go mostly with themes rather than specifics Markwitx' "reported by Buster "Onley", Sheets is out for the year". Betancourt thread, [legendary banned poster] "stats are stupid and I was pretty much almost close to sort of an NCAA baseball player so I know more than you" threads Ben Sheets got fat and lacks the eye of the tiger threads Political threads started by a former member who couldn't spell and got angry when anyone suggested spell check or firefox. Strikeouts are as bad as six other outs Jenkins is the worst, Ks too much and never does anything clutch Who's the ace based on wins and team winning percentage in his starts?
  3. Agreed that control seems to be his biggest issue right now. He's not so incredibly nasty that he can get away with that, and while it looks like nibbling, it also looks like he doesn't have command of his pitches, which is the more parsimonious explanation. When you watch middle school kids pitch, it looks like they're trying to get guys to chase pitches, but we know with them it's a result of sucking and not trying to be crafty.
  4. Russ, you can't make those statements, because you never played sports in your life, just read blogs all day and have never actually watched a baseball game. Pretty sure this has cemented itself alongside "catching WOAH SOLVDD" as one of the more bizarre threads in site history. Come to think of it, a discussion/argument over worst thread in site history would be far more entertaining than this: let's do that instead.
  5. But it was the classiest way of being unclassy.
  6. his avg on balls in play has to be awful considering how hard he hits it. .218 (.064 below his career average), so yeah, he has probably been a bit unlucky. However, his LD% is down to 14.5 from his career 18.3 and he's hitting more fly balls.
  7. I strongly doubt that there is much hope for Gomez to improve significantly as a hitter. Baseball history has shown that except for pretty rare instances, guys with a terrible approach at the plate either stay that way their whole career or only improve at it slightly. Anybody else think Gomez would've been an all-star in the steroid era? Dude's a power hitter without power who plays awesome D and runs like the wind. Roids could've put a few more feet on those fly outs.
  8. If the data is indeed flawed, then the numbers have to be taken with a huge grain of salt. It's a lot like survey data and much group design research done with small populations. With small n, something that's, say 90% accurate, could produce a wildly-inaccurate value. As the number of data increases, though, the data become more meaningful. All measurement systems that have wiggle room present gigantic problems with small n. It's how we occasionally get data which suggest that quackery cures back pain. Since our tools for assessing back pain are based on self-report and are thus not highly precise, and we have a sample of perhaps 12 people assigned to 2 groups, the lack of precision in the measurement may suggest that reiki alleviates pain by a statistically-significant margin. Meta-analysis, and large groups with solid controls, however, will give us a more accurate depiction of reality. It's not that measuring back pain by self report should be completely dismissed, but that you can't rule out fluctuations which are a result of the measurement system and have nothing to do with your independent variable with a small number of data.
  9. As long as we're still in it, we'd pretty much need to get top-notch prospects and a "free" salary-dumped SS upgrade for it to make sense, IMO. The probability that someone wants to rent Prince in order to make a playoff run, but could afford to give up something that will help the Brewers this year is somewhat low. You'd assume Gamel or Braun could man first while the dropoff from Fielder could be partially-offset by an SS acquisition, but a lot of things need to work out just right for a trade to make sense, and I just don't see it as very likely.
  10. I have a friend who's a Brewers/Bears fan. He grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and didn't begin to care about baseball until college, when he'd been living in WI for maybe 10 years. I believe we've had several on this board over the years (football talk was here before the days of Lambeau Leap).
  11. I didn't splurge on mlb.tv premium, so I have the Nats feed for this series. Man, are their announcers crappy. They're stereotypical empty-headed cliche machines and seemingly big Joe Morgan devotees. Dudes have no problem throwing out numbers from tiny samples and using RBI as proof of hitting ability.
  12. Nitpickers and crybabies in a 162 game season crack me up. Yall jump ship after every bad play or 1 loss. It's hilarious. ...so I did nothing wrong. While many others are still in WI, I have lived in Texas for 7 years and know perfectly well what "Yall" [sic, recte Y'all] means.
  13. My grandparents used to rave about that place. They stopped in Sikeston every time they drove from WI to visit my aunt and uncle in Mississippi.
  14. No, you CAN'T remove what you consider an outlier. Data is data. There's no problem with excluding a datum if you make it clear that this was done. What you can't do is say "if we remove this, the value drops to X, therefore, the value is X". It's perfectly fine to say that "he was actually pretty good except for one awful game", because you're conceding that there was an awful game, and not pretending it didn't happen.
  15. they also mention Roenicke saying that Lucroy will probably catch 120 games the rest of the way. If your backup is rarely playing, he's primarily serving as a PH. If it were a 50-50 split, this question may be a little more difficult, but you definitely keep Kottaras when the decision should be based primarily on hitting ability.
  16. That was the discussion on the DFW sports radio on my way home today. What a freakin baby throwing his coach under the bus like that. It's not his fault that Hamilton can't touch a solid object without injuring himself.
  17. So for the record....before things get underway - have we decided who is the worst MLB player ever? Betancourt or Kotsay.... or is it a tie? "Jarret Bush" is the correct answer to every "who is the worst_____?" question.
  18. I hate how the controllers charge. Have to have it turned on. Super lame. With the other 2 consoles if the batteries run out you just put new ones in. I have a laptop in the living room and just charge my controller through a mini usb cable plugged into it. It's also close enough to the couch that, should I neglect to charge it, I can just play with it plugged in.
  19. My wife needs a new computer and I am seriously considering an iPad 2 for her instead of a new laptop. The iPad can do almost everything that a PC can do for the average user. Surf the internet/use email. Watch streaming Netflix. Listen to iTunes. That is about 90% of her usage. Exactly what we did (original iPad) when we were in the same situation, and it was a good move. She rarely does more than web surfing and streaming audio, the price functionally dropped by $130 because she was about to buy an ereader anyway, and we can watch Netflix with the iPad in the treadmill or elliptical's book holder. Plus, the portability is nice - we can easily stash it in a bag when we travel.
  20. Would a hard inquiry even be required if you just want to look into rates? I know that with my recent mortgage they didn't actually pull the report, but did a soft inquiry until I formally applied.
  21. Dickerson has walked at a decent clip in his career, but he also strikes out a ton. This typically happens with guys who are selective and work counts deep - just compare the league leaders in SO and BB. If you want to see high walk totals, you're going to have to grit your teeth and be mad at a few K's. Prince could have a lower K total, but he'd also take fewer walks and make contact on worse pitches that he'd ground out instead of waiting for one he'll rip for extra bases. I disagree with the mantra that 'a walk is as good as a hit' I've literally never heard anyone say this. That's akin to saying that a ground rule double is just as good as a double.
  22. Band on the Run. The Foo Fighters cover is a little heavier.
  23. I installed Firefox 4 yesterday on both of our computers. On my new-ish Vaio I've noticed no difference at all, but it's noticeably faster on my old junker which my wife now uses.
  24. When you look at his minor league and 2008 numbers, you think he's one of those guys that just HAS to explode at some point. I'm not entirely sure who gets traded for him, though, because their big need is starting pitching.
  25. Beginning next season, Braun should be moved to 1B in order to minimize injury potential and miximize hitting potential It's an option worth considering, more for defensive worth than anything else. Should Gamel or a free agent prove to be a superior defender, and Braun could do well at 1B, you think about it. However, it'll be cheaper and easier to leave him in LF and get an .800 OPS 1B than move him to 1B and pick up an .800 OPS LF.
