  1. The issue is that defense can't be broken down cleanly into "error" and "non-error". There are so many other plays that don't show up, as we can't categorize phenomenal play, pretty darn good, solid, fair, weak, pretty crappy, and error. Ozzie Smith made a lot of plays that other guys never would, but it didn't really show up in their numbers since Ozzie didn't get extra credit and the other player didn't get an error for not making a play only a freak could make.
  2. The announcing on the Packers game today on CBS. EVERY play, he has to give the player's history. "And it's complete to Koren Robinson, the former 1st round pick by Seattle". "And it's caught by the former Dolphin", "the former #3 overall pick comes up to make the tackle".
  3. Not pretty. I can't believe we have all of one pitcher under 4.00.
  4. Well, at least he was much better than Tsyoshi Shinjo. It used to bug me how fans in the Bay Area worshipped the worst player in the majors His first year (with NYM) was acceptable when you consider his defense, but it was fluky. But yeah, two seasons with an OPS over .800 in Japan does not a great player make.
  5. That stupid Old Navy commercial with those five women, one of whom has a puppy, with that awful "You've got yours and I've got mine" song playing in the background. EVERY commercial break.
  6. Just "HDMI" does the trick.
  7. Yep, get the cheap ones - there is NO difference because it's all-or-nothing. The only problem you'll have with cheap cables is with attentuation when you're running really long cables. At the standard 6 ft, there's little chance the cheap ones don't work. HDMI cables are the way stores make their money after selling HDTV's at near cost.
  8. If Milledge realizes his potential, the Nationals absolutely clean up in this deal. Church is a nice player when healthy, but he didn't exactly light it up last year while playing mostly LF.
  9. The fact that it's 8:00 on Thursday and I DESERVE a new episode of The Office - it's one of the only things that gets me through the week. However, I don't get one because of a writer's stike. Instead, I get an old episode that I already have on DVD: only I get it with commercials. Awesome. Well, I guess there's the biggest Packer game of the year thus far, so that'll be enough to distract me. Wait, I can't watch the game because I don't get NFL Network here. Forget it, I'm gonna read a book. Nobody is going to prevent me from reading chapter 9 of Skinner's Verbal Behavior.
  10. I hate the fact that we assume anyone can be turned into an outfielder. Just because Yount was able to do it, doesn't mean that anyone can... I don't think the assumption here is that anyone who's a really good infielder can become a really good outfielder. Rather, it's the hope that someone who's a very good athlete but hurts you in the infield will be able to hurt you much less in the OF. Corey Hart would probably be a better comp, though he's faster than Braun and also reportedly played a solid first base. I wouldn't expect Braun to become Hart in the OF, but I think his skills at least merit taking the chance that he can be adequate.
  11. WHIP is good as a secondary stat, but is pretty weak on its own. Counting all hits equally is your first problem. A big time flyball pitcher and extreme grounder pitcher with the same WHIP may produce quite different results in other measures.
  12. if fingers was pitching for the brewers in the 1982 world series, the series would have gone 5 games maximum. Is that that new-fangled "fuzzy math" yer usin? We obviously win game 1. In game 2 - it was tied until the bottom of the 8th, when McClure gave up the winning run. Would Fingers have been in in the 8th AND shut them, down, AND shut them down again in the 9th AND would we have scored the winning run in extra innings? We still lose game 3 We still win game 4 We still win game 5, but maybe by an extra 2 runs. We still lose game 6 (that one was over after 5 innings) We still lose game 7, since the best case is that Fingers could have prevented the two runs in the 8th, but we still lose by 1 or he. I guess maybe he could have come in in th 6th and shut them down and the game remains tied, but that's still not a win, and we don't have Rollie late in the game. Game 2 was our only loss that was decided late by the pen. Fingers doesn't win that series, and certainly not in 5 games. Was his moustache going to score 5 runs in game 3 and 2 in game 2?
  13. So let's say you have a contending team and closer A blows six saves on the season and the team loses four of them. Then lets say closer B was there instead and he blew 11-12 saves and the team ended up losing 7-8-9 of those games. Given how often division/wild card berths are so often decided by 1-3 games, those blown saves easily could be the difference between making or not making the playoffs. Saves and blown saves need to be taken with a grain of salt, though, because all saves are not created equally. If player A protected bigger leads on average, closer B may have actually not been an inferior pitcher, or at least not that much worse. Turnbow, with all 3-run leads would look better than Cordero with 1-run leads. As a quick and dirty illustration, Cordero gave up at least one run in 11/66 appearances this year while Turnbow gave up 3+ runs in "only" 7/77 appearances.
  14. They control him for 2 more years so there's no big rush, but if they can't sign him to an extension by July, they should listen to offers, as they aren't likely to be good before he becomes a free agent and could use the rebuilding pieces. If they can get those kinds of prospects, it may be wisest to make the move and build for the future.
  15. Fluent performance in anything requires a lot of repetition and speed. There's obviously a limit to how far each person can advance in each skill, but I'd say that having Braun practice to a level many would see as excessive is the way to go. The problem is that you need accurate performance at low speeds before mass trials will do you any good. Otherwise, you're just becoming more fluent at making the same old errors.
  16. I still get pop ups with firefox, nearly all of them from mlb.com/team sites. Seriously, major league freakin baseball needs to raise some cash by sending out a Bowflex of Netflix pop-up.
  17. I couldn't get above 39.
  18. Bluetooth headsets - you look like a crazy person talking to yourself. ...and you also aren't even CLOSE to being that important. Really, you need to keep that headset on while you shop? Judging by the 93 Corolla i saw you hop out of, you're probably not that much of a mover and shaker who can't step away from his phone. What's worse is people who wear them in noisy environments like nightclubs where you couldn't possibly even use the thing. It then becomes a fashion statement or some kind of $30 status symbol. Hey dingus, I've got a cell phone, too. Wanna know who else has a cell phone? My grandma.
  19. Looks like we'll be using our own 1st rounder next year, because of the list of type-A's, I could only see us signing Lowell, Rowand, and Barrett, and none are a very good chance IMO.
  20. It's not elitist to ask people to do just the smallest amount of homework. Yep, baseball reference and mlb4u.com are both free sites. This isn't about threads about how awesome it'd be to score a certain player and asking what it'd take to get him; it's about suggesting a team would get rid of a superstar or top prospect for spare parts that some people here have said should be DFA'd. Just look at top prospects lists, and then eliminate any of the top 25 as returns for Claudio Vargas or Derrick Turnbow. Also, consider that desperation moves are typically made at the deadline (e.g. Kazmir for Martinez) when teams will either grossly overpay for a scrub or get rid of quality players they don't think they can re-sign for a low payoff rather than seeing them walk.
  21. I guess I do not understand why you feel the need to censor people's ideas He's not talking about censorship, though, he's just encouraging people to self-edit so we don't end up with two pages of wild ideas that clutter the forum and don't go anywhere. Nobody is saying "don't be creative and come up with trade proposals". Rather it's an encouragement to not jump on every available good player with an idea that's never gonna work.
  22. Not to party poop on your party pooping, but whats the big deal? Some people get really touchy when their idea of Gwynn and Dillon for Hanley Ramirez is laughed at. Then, and this is the biggest thing, IMO, the thread just turns into "that's ridiculously stupid" and is a waste of space.
  23. Gamestop currently has a pretty nice bundle for pre-order online. It's the system with an SD card, extra remote, extra nunchuk, remote charging station, Wii play, Zelda, and Metroid for $474. It sucks that you have to buy the extras, but these are the extras many would buy anyway. link
  24. Everything I've heard is that it won't use it.
  25. Are there any updates on new games or recommendations on which type of accessories or configuration I should score? Super Mario Galaxy comes out soon, and is THE game. You'll also need an extra controller and either a bunch of Nimh batteries or rechargeable battery packs for the remotes. Other than that, Zelda: Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3 are my personal favorites, but they're too difficult for young kids, though you may love them. Super Paper Mario is also really good.
