  1. Utley, without hesitation for me.
  2. I'm not a fan of the DH at all. Why not just go all the way and have offensive and defensive players like football? On the reverse side, you could argue that AL pitchers must bat when in the NL - and since they never do, it is a disadvantage to the AL teams. The problem is, the difference between Sheets batting and Dice-K batting is negligable. Plus, free agency and player movement often means that the guys in both leagues can have equal experience batting. It would've mattered more back in the day when pitchers often played their whole career with one or two teams.
  3. They're an offensive force with some pretty nice pitching. That's what sets you up nicely to be a comeback team: talent. There's a lot of randomness in win and loss streaks, but the most talented teams are better equipped to rattle off 3 straight for a comeback.
  4. Do business, it's the ultimate catch-all major with the most ability to fall back on something else when your dream job doesn't work out.
  5. You're not "exploiting" anyone when you give them a bonus larger than the salary I make with a Master's degree.
  6. By the way Ben, almost every one we have found is the fancier version with a couple of everything, some have other games as well, so i think there is more than one sku, but many are exclusive to a certain retailer. Like Ben said, there's only one "version" of the Wii, unlike PS3 and 360, and it's $249.99. The only difference is what the retailer decided to have to buy in addition to be able to purchase a system. Since they're in such short supply, some places decided to only sell them as a $500 bundle, meaning you have to buy $250 worth of extras to be able to get the system. Check their policies, though, as I've heard that you can often buy the bundle and just return the extras and get that money back. I thought I heard that Nintendo was coming out with a more deluxe version of the Wii, supposedly it would be able to play DVDs as well as games. That might just be a rumor though, Last I heard, that model was only going to be available in Japan.
  7. I know this doesn't help, but you really need to find out what areas are not selling them well. In the town I lived in down in TX, I was able to show up 2 hours early a week after the release and score one. There were only like 23 people ahead of me. Look for a place that has an aging non-affluent population and you'll probably have the best luck. The people who buy these systems are middle class and above and either parents or twenty-somethings. I was in a hick town on the weekend when the students were back in Dallas, so there was little competition.
  8. Quick, somebody find a way to get Jeff Suppan to waive his no-trade clause and ship him with Gwynn Jr. to Cincy for a big package of prospects. They'd be great Dusty players: rubber-armed and speedy.
  9. Coffee- I've never tried coffee Wow, I'm kinda surprised by people who never tried tobacco or alcohol (unless devoted to a religion that forbids it), but I've never met anyone who never tried coffee - just a bunch who tried it and hated it.
  10. If you drink in a big city, $5 is nothing. I went with my coworkers to some crappy bar and during their great happy hour, my beer was $6. Granted, it was Guinness, but gimme a break.
  11. Yeah, maybe these guys don't have enough to worry about. I work with kids every day and see the huge list of actual dangers they face (like falling down stairs, household chemicals, etc). Gumballs have never made that list. Man, I hate sensationalized journalism and fear-mongering and thank my lucky stars that we didn't have this crap to nearly the same degree when I was a kid. LINK
  12. If you wanna win, you gotta fuel like a winner. http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/41JMDcPgKxL._AA280_PIbundle-24,TopRight,0,0_AA280_SH20_.jpg
  13. Unfortunately for the D-Rays Pena's monster season is going to land him a huge pay-day this offseason thanks to a lackluster FA crop at 1B and one Mr. Scott Boras. According to the St. Petersburg Times, he has two arbitration years left. The Rays did get a lot - 40 homers and a run at the team record of 117 RBIs - for an $800,000 salary and $400,000 in incentives. They control Pena's rights for two more years, at arbitration-driven salaries, and could wait to see if he can maintain his level of play before making an extended commitment. But Pena, 29, has said repeatedly how much he wants to stay with them, and the Rays are believed to have already initiated discussions on a three- or four-year deal.
  14. matt holiday's the best hitter in baseball? One of the idiots tonight on TBS said he had one of the best seasons in national league history. Let that sink in for a moment...yeah...
  15. edit: the shortened version of "Richard" is bad? I'm going to assume its ok when referring to a person's name As Hawing alluded to, you can't have it filtered out for the inappropriate label, but not for the person's name. You could always just cheat the filter if you need to use the name, such as _Dick Cheney or D.ick Cheney
  16. Word, Leinies is now a subsidiary of Miller - though the Chippewa Falls brewery is still up and running (and a very popular destination with an awesome new building/gift shop, I should add), with the Leinenkugel family still in charge.
  17. He's in jail for a choking out the doctor who based his assessment of the baby on subjective "scouting" measures. "Well, your baby has a good heart, breathes well, and appears to have normal musculature". Russ then demanded the data from an EKG, exact volume of his lungs, and total muscle weight within 3 grams.
  18. I don't get why fans expect full disclosure on absolutely everything. Cripes, Melvin could have kidney stones and people would call him deceptive for not disclosing whether they were uric acid stones or calcium phosphate stones. I'm sure they have a reason for letting Leyva go, and they don't owe it to us to tell us everything. Say, for example, he and Ned simply didn't get along. Neither was wrong, neither was right, but it just wasn't working. Now, assume Leyva is a decent guy who needs a new gig - do you go around saying "he and Ned constantly fought about baseball philosophy"? Nope, you wish him the best and hire someone new. When you fire a guy and are a jerk or give too much info in the media, that person will often fire back and a huge mud-slinging bashfest is started. I see no reason why anyone involved would want to provoke that. This is, after all, a 3rd base coach people are getting bent out of shape about. How huge of a difference did Leyva honestly make? If it's not big, and if his replacement isn't an obvious step down - then it's just being a pain in the rear to "demand answers". Maybe they really just let him go because they already wanted Kremblas because of his history with the young players. When someone can provide a legitimate answer as to why Nick Leyva is superior to his replacement, they have a right to make a big deal out of this.
  19. Seems like a lot of guys are getting released from their teams. Aren't there any brewerfan.netters who have left their team because they fulfilled their contract and went for greener pastures? In my case, I had an opt-out clause a la ARod on my lifetime deal. I took the old team up on that deal and went on to sign a lot of short-term deals with several teams of varying levels of credibility before signing another solid year to year with mutual option deal. The short term deals didn't work out so well, but it was nice to be able to get out and play in a bunch of different cities after having locked into that lifetime deal at age 21 after having been with the organization since 17.
  20. My first question regarded the labor force. One beer proudly displays "union made" while the other is blasted by union groups. I wonder what the reaction of the workers is.
  21. I have no idea what he means, but I'd define it the same way as others - a guy with good OPS that is relatively heavy on the OBP side. Essentially, a guy who has a great chance of getting a hit/on base every time up as opposed to a 3TO guy with the same OPS.
  22. Brady plays decent defense and is a marginal hitter who has experience and was pretty decent just 2 years ago. I'm confident he'll be signed by a team with a lot of holes to be their 4th OF.
  23. You get the experience with working with people who are really in need. It's not just good for them, it's good for you too. That kind of stuff really helps you learn a lot about people and understand why we really need programs like this. You also realize that there are great charities out there and it's not just a big fundraiser for nothing. I trust non profit organizations a lot more after having worked for a few. Thanks for keeping everything clean and fun guys. I just figured I'd put in the obligatory "yes, the word God is involved, but it's lighthearted so nobody turn this into religious discussion" warning so nobody trolls and gets mad when they're reprimanded.
  24. Crazy Night at the Nuke Plant...isn't that a tune by the Dead Milkmen? Off subject, I met Joe Jack Talcum last weekend at a bar in Eau Claire. He apparently was in town to do some little indie show the night before. My friend knew the people he was with and later we went and hung out with him as he was just sitting all by himself at a table looking awkward while the people he was with went out on the dance floor.
  25. There's a thread from a few weeks back discussing this in the off topic forum. Feel free to copy and past your posts there. LINK
