  1. I don?t think we need to force new posters into a certain way of thinking. We don?t want all posters to be similar thinking robots that only espouse WHIP, VROP, etc. That wouldn't lead to much discussion would it? While you don't NEED to understand stats to be here, or even believe they're great tools, you must understand them to argue about them. The problem isn't people not understanding stats, it's blissful ignorance where troll types start blasting away about stats when they have zero idea what any of them mean. It's the whole "I watch games so I know more than anyone else here" mentality that's annoying.
  2. I'd be fine with it IF things got so tense between the sides that the Phillies were willing to eat the salary difference to get rid of him.
  3. While they may be the most "truthy" of stats, I can't believe it's 2007 and we're still stuck on "the big 3" for hitters. And regarding your "around him" thoughts....well what good is a guy if he is the lone hitter in a lineup hitting well and hitting a lot of HR, if he is the only guy doing it. I don't really get this. Production is production, regardless of how good or bad your teammates are. You don't suck simply by association because your teammates suck. In fact, I'd say it might be more impressive when you put up good numbers on a bad team, because you could easily just mail it in and start thinking about your winter golf trips.
  4. I'm noticing that the gameday isn't working. Too bad, as it's the first chance I've had to follow them. I plan on going next Saturday at Phoenix though. MLB needs to get their act together. The audio feeds barely work, "gameday 2006" is a crapshoot, and their pages, as always, are full of stupid pop-up ads.
  5. A party controlling all branches of the government until 4 months ago and always complaining that they're the persecuted "little guy". That's what's bugging me.
  6. Now for our part, once David Bell was brought up in the whole steroid probe, we all said, oh, there is no way that he took steroids with us, heaven forbid a Brewer cheating, he must have done it with all the pressure in Philadelphia.. If he was 'roiding/using HGH in Philly, I'd absolutely assume it continued to his time in Milwaukee. I think Brewerfans are just less likely to assume our players used roids because we sucked in the steroid era and couldn't afford good steroid-enhanced players.
  7. Hall: 1.1 NL: 1.7 That's kind of weird too. Intuitively, it doesn't seem weird because there are a lot of players who have the ability to hit doubles but not homers (Pierre), while there aren't guys who hit homers like Hall but can't hit doubles, so that would skew the average performance.
  8. I'm done with even trying to get the free audio. I've had three days where I could listen and it has NEVER worked. They can eat my undies.
  9. That set is awesome. How much do those go for (price range per card, not the set)?
  10. Never used anything but simple math in my life. I sure wish they would have taught me some simple investment stuff during that Calc/Geometry time. I learned it all eventually, but like most, I didn't invest nearly enough when I was 18-25, when it has all that time to compound and grow. We had business and money management classes in high school in Eau Claire - both were popular electives. The problem is that I took the classes at 16 and 17, and now 10 years later I'll finally have enough money soon to begin investing and have forgotten everything.
  11. I don't explicitly use math beyond Algebra 1 in my daily life, but I still certainly see the benefit. In my field, you're required to lay out your logic in a very succinct manner, and do a lot of logical problem solving, which is a lot like math.
  12. The term "blogosphere" and political commentators (Fox and CNN), who act like blogs have any sway with the average American. "Well, sir, that's not what the bloggers are saying. They see this as a vicious attack on Candidate A". Shut up windbag!
  13. And by the way, if memory serves me correctly, Upton was the second overall pick, Justin was the top pick. Yup, drafted behind Brian Bullington.
  14. The presence of some nice prospects could possibly prompt them to move him, but they have zero need to do so. Thus, the only way I could see them moving him right now is for a similar young talent at a position where they have a greater need.
  15. It would take trade, injury, or a combination of the two for him to see Milwaukee. Right now, we have Hall, Jenks, Mench, Gross, Hart, Clark, Nix and Gwynn likely atop the pecking order ahead of Anderson.
  16. I'm starting to get curious about Excite Truck. It sounds fun if not very deep, and I really like the idea of making my own soundtrack, but I also think Sonic might be really good so I'll have a choice to make. Everything I have ever heard from friends or read on the net indicates that Excite Truck is a phenomenal rental and a disappointing purchase because it has very low replay value.
  17. Mora is starting to slip at age 35. In addition to the no trade clause, he's due $25M over the next three years with a team option or $1M buyout for 2010. Considering you'd have to get him to waive his clause for the trade and then he'd have a no trade clause with the Brewers, I'd be way less than thrilled with Braun on the horizon. You could be stuck with an $8M backup in 2008 and 2009 just to plug a hole this season. Gimme Graffy and the saved salary.
  18. When people post a lot, it sucks. I've been to forums where dorks use 250X250 images and post 3 times per page in a thread. Especially when everyone has one, it looks really dumb because the image to text ratio is probably 10:1. Ajay often pastes little gifs (or some kind of image) at the bottom of posts and it's cool because he does it once or twice, so you never get sick of seeing the same thing over and over. I'd guess you could go that route and use something like that when you're particularly pumped or when the image relates to the thread.
  19. David Bell is not ok offensively. That depends. If he's a starter, no. However, the 87 OPS+ he put up last year is tolerable for a cheap backup who can play decent D.
  20. I just remember how many arm surgeries Jaret Wright, D'Amico, Nathan, etc had, and they've been fine. Granted, I'd gladly take D'Amico's 2000 from Jonesat this point, but he might not be the best example, as he was never any good at all after that year.
  21. For a guy who just had shoulder surgery that will force him to miss the 2007 season, Brewers pitching prospect Mark Rogers is remarkably upbeat. If I had just turned 21 yesterday and had a $2.2M bonus in the bank, it'd take a lot for me to be lugubrious as well.
  22. He turns 24 around the start of the season, which is still pretty young, but he's had numerous arm problems, and expecting a lot would probably be setting yourself up for a big disappointment, but I for one am holding out some hope.
  23. Any R.A. Dickey fans hoping to see the former Montgomery Bell Academy and Tennessee star pitcher with the Nashville Sounds this season better catch some of the games early. This will probably be good advice, but not because he'll get promoted, but because he'll be begging for indy league work by July. Being a knuckleballer doesn't mean you'll pitch a long time. I mean, I can throw softly with my left hand, and that doesn't mean I'll be a major leaguer until I'm 50 - it means I could possibly strike out a few 10 year-olds.
  24. I just hope Geno doesn't walk in and hear "Dr. Helms will be performing your surgery today". He'd immediately die of a heart attack.
  25. Are there any system selling games that have been released since launch besides the new Zelda and Wii Sports? Madden may not be a "system seller", but it's top-notch.
