I'd like Nunn. I think we might have something in Mannion. Not a star or part of some hypothetical future core, but a competent PG who can create a little bit. Watching Jackson in the Summer League, I see the appeal. The Draymond Green comps as a passer make total sense. He just sees the plays ahead of time. One play that stands out, they swung the ball to him, Tako was just getting inside position and it was almost a touch pass by Jackson. Hit his hands and it almost looked like he was setting the ball in Volleyball. Actually made Tako Fall look good!

Article: 2023 MLB Draft Day 1 Thread
BrewerFan replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
I really can't think of a year we said that other than last year. Our 1st round picks have...generally been guys who were pretty firmly entrenched as 1st rounders or even guys who were projected higher and had a poor spring such as Turang. Can you think of another player we took that was speculted to be below slot? I guess Small could have fit that mold. We went a little under on Small...a LITTLE over IIRC on Kelly and then Dillard, Holt, Hamilton I believe were all signed over slot. This draft is a bit unique. The Brewers aren't getting much love on the MLB network...(not sure how I will emotionally cope with that) but there is still a whole lot of talent out there.- 195 replies

Keston Hiura has a .984 OPS in Nashville
BrewerFan replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Yeah, I'm just at a loss for words on that one. That's objectively ridiculous. You had to go back and name three of the best hitters of the last 30 years. Again, we simply need him to be an improvement. We do NOT need Manny Ramirez from Keston Hiura. Geez...ya wonder why it's impossible to please people sometimes!🤣 -

BrewerFan replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Seriously? He would have to play at the level of one of the best RHed hitters of all time, one of the best DH's of all time or the Brewers best power hitter ever to be valuable? That's...crazy. He'd simply have to be better than what we have now to be "valuable." We don't need a HOFer or HOF caliber bat from Hiura. -

I think this is a big part of it. Yes, I get he was already DFA'ed, but if you're going to get rid of Winker, a proven hitter(who has been awful) and go with Hiura, it's not something you can undo. You're stuck there. Maybe a convenient DFA for Winker is good as well, see if Hiura's adjustments lead to a different look at the plate. Not that you'd need to decide based on 10 days of stats, but you can see if he looks better. I still think Winker is going to be a good hitter again, but I thought the ASB was enough time. I guess maybe we can afford a bit more with Yelich and Adames getting going, but there's just no reason to not bring up Hiura at this point. If you were willing to let him go for nothing...it's certainly worth a shot to see if you can get him back to anything close to what he'd been. We waited 3 years for Yelich to get going again...maybe the same will be true with Keston. -
Garver would be great...but hard to see the Rangers trading away depth given how well they're playing this year. The Red Sox have to be looking to trade Turner, right? He's got a player option for next year and is gonna get nearly 7M if he exercises it(which he presumably will as he's still hitting and would almost certainly get more than 6M in FA). He shouldn't cost much in terms of prospects. And Boston has 4 starting pitchers on the IL right now with Sale back on the 60 day, has started 22 games in 4 years, so I doubt they'll be banking on much of anything from him with the "chance to come back in August" diagnosis. In fact, we should probably look to get a reliever back with Turner if we give up even a...IDK, Jarvis type prospect. Boston seems like a team that'll likely look to be spending a lot of money this off-season, so clearing whatever cash they can this year, plus a few team options, that's a deal that should be made.
-
This IS the same team that moved Travis Shaw to 2B. It's a bit hard to envision them moving Yelich just as he's hitting the ball as well as he has since 2018, but it could solve a few issues. Tyler Black is a guy I'd at least consider if we can't find another in-house solution, but I've yet to see him in the lineup at 1B in Biloxi(could have missed it). LOL...I'm shocked we didn't send Quero, Chourio, and Frelick out last year for JD Davis...what with Stearns being a double agent! The serious part, I wouldn't consider Chourio for Alonso. I'm not trading him for any player with a year and a half of service time. Same goes for Misiorowski, Frelick or Quero. And it'd have to be real significant upgrade(Someone like Alonso that we'd make a QO to) to trade that next group, Turang, Wiemer, Black, Lara or Gasser. I wonder what type of trade value Mitchell would have? He's the OFer I have the least faith in. Being his non-throwing shoulder that's injured...maybe a team not contending wouldn't mind waiting until '24 to get him on the field.

Surely you mean Middleton and Lopez' last run with Giannis(and even Jrue), right? In 2 years, the Bucks will have a ton of cap room and who knows what they'll have in Livingston, Marjon, Jackson and whomever they take in the 1st next year. The Cap holds will be small and could easily be renounced outside their top players. They'll have Giannis at ~51, Marjon at 4.5, Jackson and Livingston at 2M each. All that cap space, the MLE that could be ~15M a year, Bi--Annual. And then Portis at ~13, Middleton at 36, Connaughton at ~9 Player options and those are valuable in and of themselves if they're looking to trade to acquire players as they're all expiring. Add another young 1st round pick next year, and they'll have a massive amount of roster flexibility in 2 years. And remember, Bradley Beal was basically a salary dump. Who knows what players will be salary dumbs by that point wile also being The next 2 years(or 3)....could well be the end of the Giannis era. He'll also be 30 years old with what should be a lot of good basketball left in him. A defensive first player like Jackson who's an outstanding passer, a long wing like Majon who can defend and hopefully score, a total X-Factor like Livingston who has star potential(and also the potential to be out of the league by then)...it may be a very appealing place for players requesting trades or who are FAs. Maybe Brandon Ingram and Jamal Murray find that appealing or Lauri Markkanen, Myles Turner, OG Anunoby and Derrick White. Maybe it'll be players who break out in the next 2 years. Maybe it'll be one of a dozen veterans who want or are demanding trades and we actually have assets to acquire them. Trade flexibility, ample salary cap space, all the other avenues to add players available to them, draft picks available. Giannis is an appealing player to play with and he'd still be right in his prime. But I'll just enjoy the next two years and I'm certainly not worried about this being "Last run" with a guy who's never given any indication he want to leave Milwaukee.

Article: Nygaard Mock Draft v. 2.0
BrewerFan replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
I like 2 of Meyer, Schaunel and White in our first 3. I'm not the least big concerned about our history of Prep arms as that seems like a distance memory by now. And with all the good College bats, I think Schaunel may fall to our 2nd pick... -
Seems unlikely they'd make another trade like Hader(but more consequential) after seeing how last year went, but also just because there are so many possible starting pitchers available. Giolito, Cease, Bieber, Webb, Rodriguez....and then some guy who thinks he can pitch AND hit and be successful at it. So seems unlikely we'll get that Godfather offer to even make it worth considering. Meanwhile, any offer for Adames is going to be for a ~2 WAR player rather than the ~4 WAR player he actually is. Seems as likely now that the Brewers let him play it out until Free Agency than they trade him(maybe a QO if he has a big year next year). I did read one funny line while reading one deadline list of players who should/could be traded; I guess a team that trades a future HOF 3B on a...pretty good deal, then eats I believe it was 80M of it(with the option picked up) and doesn't get back one elite prospect...that line is fitting. STL ended up getting him for ~22M a year.

I'm exceptionally skeptical about a Harden trade. That the Bucks would even look into it. Harden has a no-trade clause and expects a max contract. It makes very little sense from the Bucks standpoint and it makes absolutely no sense from the Sixers. They're holding off on giving Maxey an extension so they have room to add a max deal next year in Free Agency(even with a 13M cap hold for Maxey they should have ~70M in cap space)...so why trade for Jrue and lose that ability to sign a player before they give Maxey a max level extension? It'd undermine everything they've done...unless Jrue opts out, but you'd have to be hoping he does. I'd imagine they'd be targeting Siakam, Hield and then once they sign them, give Maxey his deal. They're in a position the Bucks are hoping to be in 2 years from now. As for Giannis, It'd be more surprising if Giannis signed now than if he didn't. Giannis JUST made a social media post that his career in Milwaukee is "half over" and how much he still wants to do here. He's halfway through his deal...it seems premature to worry about his next deal. Make the right moves and decisions and there's no indication Giannis won't stick around. And Lopez has yet to sign. The Bucks can still make trades, combine salaries, take on more money than they send out. These are all just agreed upon deals...I don't think I see them making a deal, but if the Pacers wanna send Buddy Hield to use for Allen and Connaughton...I'd be game. I wonder if they'd use Portis though? If they perhaps kept Crowder, added Robin Lopez for the purpose? I think it'd be a bad idea to do that to Portis after all he's done to stay in Milwaukee, but Hield is the ideal fit on this team, but it also feels like Indiana wants to keep their options open next year(hence Browns 2 year 45M deal that has a TO for year 2).
-
The only reason I'd really want to trade Jrue would be for an upgrade as he's been pretty clear he's done in 2 years(maybe 1 more year). I don't see Harden being that upgrade. He may put up points and assist totals, but I just don't think he's a great player at this stage(or even a real #2 star). Beal had his warts, but he was about as good as we could have done...he chose Pho. 25-26 we should have a ton of cap room and it's a huge FA class(though again, always is 2 years out). Giannis will have to do some planning and banana-boating if he wants to have success here long term-as in after the next 2 years. Or the Bucks will have to get exceptionally lucky. Beauchamp, Livingston, both could be stars. Not all that likely either one became a #2 on a Title caliber team, but we'll see.
-
That's how he's been used thus far. I did get to see him play in HS and he just laid the wood on guys. It was impressive. Now...that's HS, but there have been a lot of talented players to come from that conference and he's the best I've seen.

25, 12K per 9 last year in AA. Threw 2.1 IP this year, went on the IL May 7th, that's all I can find...beyond his scouting report which sounds filthy. Sits in the 96-99 range, touches triple digits, wild, but has a splitter and slider that apparently get a ton of movement, but like most guys with this profile, struggles with walks. Beyond that, I don't know. I tend to jump to TJ when I see a pitcher struggle, then miss a couple months, but maybe they're working with him in the famous pitching lab trying to get some things ironed out. Given he was a throw in with Contreras, anything out of him is gravy, but he's would anyone be shoced to see him throwing the 8th inning for the Brewers next year? I'm still holding out hope. He's been such a good hitter and the last week or so he's had really good ABs. I think given who our options are, he's worth giving a little more rope to. But he'll probably end up like McCuth and end up in Cincy next year with a top 10 BA, OBP, and whatever else they rattled off when pointing out how good he'd been. Speaking of which, not the forum for it, but if the Pirates were to sell, I'd be more than happy to step behind that Donkey and hope he didn't kick me again. But assuming they'll hold onto a franchise Icon having a great year.
-
That's a big one. If he'd picked 'Bama(who offered) he'd be a top 150 prospect in about 6 weeks). 2nd highest rated CB the Badgers have picked up in the "internet recruiting era," per TheAthletic. 2nd straight year with a 4 star. They've got a top 150 Safety who should be emerging this year in Woehler. This staff has a LOT of momentum. More than I could have possibly imagined this time last year. Their '24 class was already a top 20 class and if they can routinely pull in top 20 classes with competent QBs, get the OL play back up to par...I don't think it'll happen, but I COULD see this team in the CFP in the future....down the road. This year, B1G West is very winnable.
-
He has. Peguero has as well. Wilson. I think the Brewers win this one long term...but there's more context to it. That Oakland loved Ruiz so much changes the whole deal. Side note, there's no chance BRef is accurate with Hader's height, right? They have him listed as 5'10? I thought he was at least 6'3 if not taller. Devin Williams is not 4 inches taller than him...right?

That Lamet decision made absolutely no sense and it was CLEARLY a roster issue and not intended all along as was presented to us. Irrespective of what Lamet has since done(plus, don't we consider the Brewers pretty good at developing pitchers and helping them fix their issues) that REALLY annoyed me. The subsequent trades made a ton of sense. Contreras has improved so much defensively. He really only filled the Renfroe hole offensively, but that's worth a ton for a passable defensive catcher vs a RFer. Payamps has been exceptional. One of the confusing things to me is Gasser not getting the call yet. I guess it's more about roster manipulation. They could deal with throwing Pannone once and then discarding him(which kinda sucks as he seemed like he could be of use as a long man). But Gasser has been pitching so well, he seems like he should be getting the call fairly quickly. I'd say by the next Houser start? Andrews back to AAA, Gasser up, Monasterio/Toro DFA? I'd also be good with Uribe. That's 2 40 man spots, but with Turang, not sure it has to be an either or with Monasterio and Toro. So add those two, if options become an issue with either, things have not worked out. So I wouldn't be bothered by burning one.
-
You see Burnes fire the ball into the ground? You see him screaming into his glove? I don't think a lack of motivation is the problem...and baseball is a sport that gets harder the more you press. I don't think there's anything wrong with his motivation. He may not love the front office, but seems like he cares about his teammates more than he dislikes anyone running the team.
-
Uribe. A 17 year old who's already got a big fastball and it looks like he's got the stuff to be a TOR type pitcher moving forward, or an elite high leverage reliever. But I'm definitely looking for high ceiling arms back. With Uribe, you're talking about a 17 year old kid in rookie ball, so if he's a star, 3 years away in a best case scenario, likely 5 years away from being a potential MLB starter. I'm not sure TB is the best option. I like Texas. I'd be willing to give up Williams if you could get Porter and Lieter back. I'm completely of the opposite mindset that if you trade Burnes, you need to get hitters back. We've got hitters coming up. We've got 3 top ~70 position prospects in AA or above and I think Tyler Black should be close to the top 100. The Brewers have been competitive, even the last few years despite just terrible offensive production. I keep going back to what that OF could look like with Chourio/Frelick/Wiemer and then Mitchell, Yelly(part time DH maybe depending on platoon splits) and Rodriguez looks like the ideal 4th OFer(or 5th/6th depending on Mitchell). Black, Quero, Turang, 4 picks in the top...what, ~87 this year. Give me a couple of high end AA arms with that type of TOR type potential. I think saying, "I just want MLB ready bats back for Burnes," is reactionary and the result of understandable frustration, but we have so much talent coming up. I mean, I could be sold on a guy like Manzardo...though to be honest, I don't think he's going to be a HUGE difference from Black...who ends up at 3B in a perfect world, possibly 2B, but I think likely 1B. Get pitching and keep investing on the bats on the international FA market. That's the most sustainable way to win. 2025 you could have Misiorowski Porter Lieter Peralta Ashby Gasser Uribe CL....that seems more the Tampa Bay model than just loading up on bats and hoping you can find pitching and develop it elsewhere.
-
It is kinda funny in every sport now when a recruit flips, it's "must have paid him...offered him a bigger NIL deal." VERY few of these guys are getting NIL and even among those who do, it's the vast minority. UCLA is a fun school and if you're an athlete, I certainly get the appeal. Get out of your comfort zone. Plus, we've got transfers now, so a kid can make this decision knowing if it's not what he thinks or what he wants, he can leave in a year or two. I loved my time in school, but a little bit of me wishes I'd have considered most seriously going out of state.
-
It can also actually save you some money. The Bucks picked the Kalaitzakis on a partially GTD deal to limit their salary cap liability. They actully cost less than an UDFA or a vet minimum...but if has to be a 3 year partially GTD deal, so you have to take some money from the MLE or Bi-Annual as they did with Kalaitzakis. But he cost them roughly 900K. That's the cheapest you can sign a player to. So when you're getting hit with 4.25M for every million you're over, plus now you have that 2nd apron to deal with, you're hoping the players will become something, but it also makes more sense. I do think they targeted both of these players. It's easier to see how they work on a team like Boston or GSW or any team who's best player is also a shooter(Pho another example). But they have...some plan. I can't really see what it is at this point other than just running it back and hoping Middleton and Lopez sign for a little less, but, we'll see).
-
Jackson was mocked from last 1st down to 40. Even in last years way too early...he was mocked to the Bucks at ~37 IIRC. He's not a scorer. He sounds like if everything goes right just a glue guy who makes everyone better. But I don't think they're even really really hoping he becomes a 35% 3 point shooter or a reliable scorer. It sounds like pretty much nobody does. Horst talked about how they're changing the way they're going to play and they need players for that and he was a perfect fit. Sounds like they have much higher hopes for Livingston, but at least both are big, physical players who you could probably play as PFs if you went with a smaller lineup and they can switch on just about everything. I don't think it'd impact Lopez(these two picks certainly shouldn't) but Horst also talked about switching. If Houston gets ridiculous and is offering Lopez 20M a year for 3 or the Lakers do, maybe they're planning on playing a different style. Still thinking he's coming back, but hypothetically, you have Jrue, Beauchamp, Middleton, Jackson and Giannis, you can switch and Tatum/Brown aren't going to tear you up. Plus, we've been a good shooting 3 point team for a couple years, we get to the playoffs and it falls apart and we have Middleton who can shoot(and that's hit or miss) and then usually one other player. Hill, Brogdon, maybe Connaughton another series or Lopez part of another. So unless they pull off some trade for some dynamic 3 point shooter, they're probably thinking a great passing, lock down defender who's athletic and can play that dunkers spot right away, he has some value. It's not exciting, but they did with their title on the strength of their defense more than anything.
