I don't know, none of them actually look that impressive when you go back and look through the years. The 49ers hits are early. Bosa, Buckner(that's a long time ago for this discussion...). We'll see how Ricky Pearsall does, but it's actually pretty surprising to me going back and looking year by year how those teams have drafted. Even the Eagles. What they did that was impressive was the way they moved up and down, but that trade that involved Wentz and then they must have traded back another year as they had multiple firsts in a couple drafts and were able to take Jevon Carter 9th, Jordan Davis 13th, they traded for AJ Brown. Just had extra 1sts to play with....which is why that Atlanta deal would have been a boring deal for this year, but a great move long term(and I think Golden is a very good pick). Of course, it we did that, the comments would be about how we don't really want to win, so...sometimes you can't win as a GM!

I don't think it is.

Ok...if Torkelson has a lesser career WAR but has played 200 more games, you realize he's been just THAT MUCH worse, right? Yes. Based on WAR. If you have one player who plays in 100 games and he adds 4 games above replacement and another who has less WAR over 300 games, the player who's added more wins is the more valuable one....
-
Yeah, I wanted to be wrong, but... he's just not clicking, swings through the high fastball, can't stay healthy... Not that I'm saying we should give up on him...he's just not gonna be much more than an injury prone, plus defensive CF who Ks a lot and occasionally runs into one and steals a few bags.
-
Yup. Obviously. Which is why I said I wanted Golden days before the draft... Who said he wasn't a deep threat?

How Long Is Vinny Capra's Leash With The Brewers?
BrewerFan replied to Jack Stern's topic in Brewer Fanatic Front Page News
What unforeseen issues? Ortiz? He's struggled the first month. Does he get credit for Turang and Frelick? I think this a little reductive. We're still early. Chourio's BA jumped up how many points today? He was just at .248, he's at .280 now. Yelich has been hot, Hoskins is hitting .300...does he get credit for any of that? Maybe it's just...a team with some players struggling. Mostly Ortiz and then 3B, a position we didn't really have anyone at and probably won't until next year...when the next tsunami of talent starts to flow.- 23 replies

How Long Is Vinny Capra's Leash With The Brewers?
BrewerFan replied to Jack Stern's topic in Brewer Fanatic Front Page News
So...you mean the playoffs we've made since then didn't make us a contender? The 90+ win teams? William Contreras and then Gasser, who was dominant until TJ surgery paused his MLB career, THAT is what ruined us? Do you remember what Hader did before the trade and then after? Counsell left and he still couldn't beat the Brewers, won't beat the Brewers and the Brewers farm system is absolutely stacked. Jesus Made a couple of SS for us that are...yeah, we're gonna recover from that trade that worked out overwhelmingly in our favor...- 23 replies

I mostly agree. I just...don't really understand a few things. 1-Golden He will be a possession WR. A guy that can get open and make contested catches keeps the chains moving. But a "possession" WR was the last thing I wanted. A deep threat makes those 3rd down conversations so much easier. It makes getting into 3rd and short easier, it makes...everything easier. The whole offense runs smoother. It's like a great pass rush for the defense, it makes everyone else's job easier. Christian Watson wasn't a superstar last year. He was a nice player, but we were ~4 yard better per play with him on the field. And Golden is really good at going up and getting the ball in contested catch situations...as Reed is. Obviously he won't be as good as Julio or a 6'3 big body, but a possession WR is Romeo Doubs, Wicks was the quintessential 3rd down WR/Possession WR in '23. Last year...he struggled. Kraft, Musgrave,....all possession WRs. What we were missing was that HR threat. 2-Belton-Why would you doubt he can play inside? Especially given that we've moved away from the ZBS? The edge may be an issue, we'll have to see, but I don't think there's any doubt he'll be able to kick inside and play Guard. Watson is going to miss more than a few games...on top of that, he's a FA. But I am with you, that was a head scratcher to me. I like him...but he's a luxury. https://sports.yahoo.com/article/green-bay-packers-still-expected-012340124.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall With the Packers still expected to cut Jaire(or trade)...what are we doing? Going after Ramsey? I mean...seriously, that has to be on the table. We have zero depth at CB. We're not going to have a choice but to sit back in soft zone and hope we can create pressure and then lean heavily on our Safeties. I'm with ya. But...I didn't scout the GA DT. They have such insane depth, they have guys who are projected to be 1st rd picks next year, so a guy being a rotational player could still make him an NFL caliber player. So MAYBE that's Slaton's replacement? I wish Ford was still on this roster. Suddenly, 6.5M for a DT doesn't look so bad. Not with Kenny Clark on the downside of his career. We DID sign Nazir Stackhouse. He could certainly plug up the middle. Not much else, but...again, those Bulldogs have just waves of players coming at you! Dumas Johnson, Stackhouse, Brinson...they could all help vs the run. AS for not helping much this year...it takes rookies a year, but I'd say -Golden will have a big impact -Belton will start somewhere, likely inside to start...but maybe he doesn't start until next year when Walker and Rhyan are gone. -Williams will have a role. They'll want to get him touches...but I don't think he'll have an impact at WR. -Sorrell-Limited, STs. -Oliver-I think he'll be used sparingly, but I think he'll make an impact. -Brinson...I'd guess Stackhouse is more likely to make an impact at this point. Really be nice to still have Ford. -Robinson may need to... -Williams very little CB-Easily the most baffling. Particularly with the instance on letting Jaire go. Which I get. I don't love it, but I get it...but you had to do more. Now you're desperate. Dallas, KC, they have depth there. Not sure where else...but you NEED to make a move. Asante Samuel Jr? Kendall Fuller...Rasul Douglas? I think we got much better on offense and gave Hafley some creative weapons, but no core pieces for the other side of the ball...though, I hope I'm wrong. Edge and Off-ball/PR specialist in Rd4/5 could be nice, but we still have needs.

I think you're wasting his talent if you don't try him out at LT...or RT. I still think it makes more sense to just start Tom at LT now, but either way, elite teams have both OT spots locked down. I would hope they're just talking about him playing OG because they didn't want fans to get upset they passed on other positions with Morgan, Walker, Tom at OT, but again, I'd have been good going OT in Rd1. I don't like Savion Williams as an outside WR, I do think he is a Cordelle Patterson Gadget player. Maybe a poor man's Deebo... but I don't think they made that pick because they don't believe in Love. I think Watson is hurt, Doubs has concussion issues and...he just doesn't seem like he wants to be here. I'm probably reading too much into his game day disposition, but he looks...disinterested when playing. Either way, they're both due to be FAs. I wouldn't write Watson off, but I don't see Doubs re-signing. Watson, it'd take him coming back and showing something and then signing a pretty conservative contract and at that point, I'm sure a team that has 80-90M of cap space will probably overpay him. Chargers, Raiders, Titans, all have over 100M in cap space as of now for the '26 draft. That's...fine. That's what I was hoping for in Thornton later on...and you were past that top tier of CBs after Nohl Williams got drafted(though...Riley was there). I'm a little confused at the end of the day with some of these picks(for instance, if you wanted another versatile OT, there was a really good one fro Oregon St available in Grey)....but Gute is pretty good at his job. I'll trust him. Dumas-Johnson signing an UDFA deal is good for them. I think he's got a good chance to make the team and play on early downs. One pick that was really interesting is Oliver. I'm hoping he's used kinda like Micah Parsons was a rookie before he moved full time to edge. Off-Ball base, then 3rd 10, let him go. Or as a Spy at times. Good spot for another player who fits Hafley's scheme at least insofar as he likes to disguise fronts and coverages. Oliver is athletic enough I could see you with Oliver/Wyatt/LVN/Gary/Cooper/Bullard/Wiliams all up on the LOS and then dropping out 2 and just creating confusion. Easier to do that with Oliver than McDuffie. Still...not sure what we're looking at for CB unless Jaire is staying put. If he's gone, we're going to need to make a move in SOME way to add depth or play a lot of zone. We did it last year, we had a solid overall defense. The offense could be really exciting with these additions, Lloyd hopefully adding another look, Musgrave if he can stay healthy is a big threat and...Golden, improved OL play... We'll see. It's usually the rookies from last year making a big jump and I think there's plenty of room for that. Kinda a meh draft overall IMO, but we'll see. We may have really upgraded the pass rush from 124 to 160 and added a nice replacement for Slaton in Rd6.

This kinda ruins RAS for me. He just ran and measured his size. That can't give you an RAS. I'd be willing to bet if the CBs all worked out at the combine, they'd have gone earlier. Anyway... This is the point where...you have to consider taking him, no? I don't think there is any "collusion" going on with him...which is what's trending on Twitter and...silly. But the kid is pretty athletic, but he's a really advanced QB. Not a superstar, but he could be an outstanding system QB. He's everything Brock Purdy or Kirk Cousins are. I get there were concerns he was going to come in and want things done a certain way, but what he reportedly said in a couple interviews, his goal was to "come in and change the culture." That was seen as arrogant. Well...it was like the Giants and bad teams. You need your culture changed. He gets the ball out on time, good accuracy, incredible anticipation. Doesn't have the physical skills in terms of arm strength, speed or running ability, but...it's the 4th. I'd consider it if there are any Malik Willis takers and maybe even if there aren't. Though, I'll be just fine if we draft a good DL/CB.
-
I'm hoping that Doubs is moved today for a 4th rd pick. That's high, but Dallas saw what he could do and it'd set us up to really at least bring in some bodies to add some good depth. Rd4 DTs-Jordan Farmer, FSU. Stout vs the run, good pass rusher. Not like Fiske from last year, but I think he'll be an impact player and very good against the run. CJ West-I think Farmer is a little more well rounded, West is a better athlete. Flip a coin, I'll take either. Edge Ty Hamilton. I think he's purely a sub package DT, but he's very good holding up vs Double teams. Jack Sawer-I don't think they're going to take an edge at this point with the depth they do have, they must like Cox Jr(and I really didn't like either OSU edge rusher). But this is a good place for him. Antwaun Powell-Ryland is interesting, but if they're going to take one here, Brayden Swinson from LSU is the #1 choice IMO. CB-Zy Alexander is not a guy with great speed, but he just played well. Quincy Riley, The CB position as a whole doesn't have much left. I'd really like to see a trade with KC given their depth and so many guys set to become Free Agents. Huge upside guy Zah Frazier, Zemaiah Vaughn is a physical long athletic CB, Korie Black, Bihal Kone a small school guy, he could be in play. and then just solid depth guy from Iowa Jermari Haris. He's not a great athlete, but...he's tough, he's physical. LB-Buchanan Cali, he's a really good player. He could develop into a 3 down player with his speed but he hits those running lanes fast and he's a great athlete with good size. Cody Lindenberg from Minnesota as a 5/6th rd pick. Good vs the run. Kobe King, PSU...he's a capable run defender. The rest, mostly Rds 5-7... Jamon Duman-Thomas is a former UGA LB, went to Kentucky. 6' 240, he's a thumper. Smael Mondon, he was a favorite of mine last year, but he's a Quay Walker type(in fact I think he just took over for him). He got bigger this year, he's fast, but I'm looking at MLBs good vs the run. Edge-Elijah Williams from Morgan St. 6'2 290, he's athletic, he can certainly kick inside...he would be fun. Tyler Batty, BYU 6'5 271...both of these guys would be interesting 7th rd picks. David Walker is not a very Packers type pick, 6' 260 RAS in the mid 8s. He's more of an effort player, but might be worth a shot. Que Robinson is a guy I'd really take a look at 5th or later. 6'4, 255, he's been pretty good vs SEC OTs and he is a under the radar name that could be interesting. Other players, Sander is still on the board. I'd absolutely consider moving Malik for a 3rd next year if we could get Sanders. I think he's a developed and mature passer who could thrive in this system. Marcus Mbow is the Zach Tom of this draft to me. I think he will be a really good Center. I don't think we'll go back to OL in the 4th, but...if they do. OG Frazier from LSU is still on the board as is Dellinger, the later is an OC/OG...maybe a late day 3 pick, priority UDFA? DTs Ty Robinson is a big, super athletic pass rush DT, Deone Walker...I'm really hoping he ends up in GB, but he's had weight issues as well. If he gets the weight under control, he can look like an All-Pro DT. When he plays with good pad level and is in shape, he's got a chance to be unstoppable. Otherwise, he anchors very well vs the run. Nash Hutchmaker is a guy I know from his Wrestling days. He was one of the top Wrestling recruits in the Country. Actually caly me back after losing about 40 pounds and Wrestled for Nebraska in 2024. He hadn't Wrestled in 4 years and came in late, so the undefeated 4X HS State Champ wasn't great, but...I think it says a lot about his work ethic. High effort player. 7th/UDFA type. I'm gonna assume a trade, Doubs to the LAC who really need help at WR...and throw out one more mock that...I hope happens. Farmer is a high upside DT, Kennard is a long, athletic edge. Buchanan a plug and play MLB. Frazier, Vaughn are both guys who need time and...we MAY be going to more of a cloud coverage scheme like we had under Barry. That's not an inherently bad thing, Barry just ran it poorly, but they're both guys who profile to play better in man. Hamilton is a guy who could go top 4 in Rd 4 or go undrafted. I don't know. Jason Marshall from Florida is a guy I didn't see was available, but I'd have taken him(though Hamilton is really hard to turn down as he could turn into a Milton Williams type impact player in a few years). Bottom line, we better hope they work it out with Jaire because if not, we're going to be wishing for an Eric Stokes! Jaire, Ballentine, Stokes and...who else, Roschell all gone, Hobbs added? Not complaining. Building around you're young QB is paramount. You spend 50M AAV, give him what he needs, but...now lets try and give Hafley what he can develop!
-
Well, he's a pro now and the vetting system is pretty in depth. I'd guess they felt good about that. As for the Speed rushers, yeah, that's possible, but he's also long and has pretty good feet. Just a speed rusher is usually pretty easy to run off, it's the really good edge rushers who use the speed rush and then dip inside, but also, an issue the Packers have to be aware of, Jordan Love takes a deeper drop than other QBs(as did Rodgers). This could mean that he'll play OG. Could mean Tom plays LT and he competes for a year. I was good with the idea of taking Josh Simmons in Rd1(better when every article talked about him torn ACL...which is not the injury he had). I just think you need an elite OL and the Packers are trying to build that. I think there's a real chance the guy taking one spot ahead of us will bite us like when the Eagles took Mitchell a couple spots earlier, DeJean was taken one spot ahead, Terrian Arnold was taken ONE spot ahead(the later two by trading up). But Azareye’h Thomas, the guy I thought was the best possible fit in Rd, he went after, Amos, Revel, Porter, so many of these CBs went after. Rd3 was really the most confusing to me, but... I've wanted to sign Cordarelle Patterson for a few years(at least after his first year with ATL). So...we're good. Best case sceanrio, the Packers are able to trade Doubs for a 4th. The Raiders, Cowboys are teams looking for WR depth and Doubs to Dallas seems like an easy move.
-
They definitely made a change last year with Jacobs. MLF is now running a pretty unique offense. That Shanahan style offense, but not zone blocking, more gap/power scheme. Just downhill power running. I liked Belton...and I would have been fine with Simmons in the first rd. I don't think you've ever got enough OL/DL. I DO hope they can find...some way to add a CB who can contribute. Perhaps a trade with the Chiefs given all their CBs are set to be Free Agents and them adding a really good CB. I think Doubs is very likely trade candidate. I don't get the Savion Williams pick, but if you're going to run him at RB, put him in motion and let him return kicks...alright. After Nohl Williams was gone, there wasn't a really good CB left.
-
That was kinda my point. Obviously you want size+speed+route running+great hands. That's...as you said, rare. I'm good with 5'11 and elite speed, route running, hands.
-
I think if you have that type of athleticism in the modern NFL, you can play RT and you can play Guard. I thought that was a great pick. No need is as big as the OL with a young QB...IMO. I think he's Elgton Jenkins pre-ACL...and minus the Center ability. But a good athlete. Simmons, the OTHER OSU LT could be the steal of this first rd if his knee is healthy. I loved that for the Browns. Arch Manning is still a big time prospect and even if he doesn't come out, Cleveland is in a 3-4 year rebuild. OL, QB, the draft looks better at a lot of positions next year, but if there's not a QB you love, you do it again. You trade back draft two OL, get the OL ready for when the QB comes. They'll still suck, look for a team like Tenn that wants to trade up for a QB and you could have 2 top 10s again next year. The Browns should be among the favorites to have the #1 pick. Look at what the Bears did as their road map... And the Jags, I don't think they're good, but Hunter could give them a big boost and Lawrence is capable of playing at a high level. Booker was an awful pick. Jerry did the right thing in the past with Martin over Johnny Manziel and he's seemingly trying to recreate that, but I don't think Booker is anywhere near the prospect Martin was. The Falcons, I wish they offered that trade to the Packers. Maybe they did and we liked Golden that much? Start working the board so they have a chance at a top 5 pick in the 2027 NFL draft. That Jeremiah Smith is the best looking WR I've seen in a while. Seattle got one of the 3-4 players I think is a near lock to be an AP caliber player(Hunter, Abdul-Carter, Warren and Zabel) but you took a center 18th. He has to be...not Jason Kelce, but...closer to him. The Sr bowl though, he and Deone Walker were both outstanding, so I get it. I'd love Walker but not before 159. Then just hope for 2023 Walker. Pearce from Tenn just seems like a situational edge...but look at Von Miller. Nearly identical frames.
-
I was probably just bouncing back and forth between boards...but No, of course that's not the more important trait for a WR overall, It was the biggest trait WE were missing. Someone who forces the defense to play with a safety playing over the top. It just opens up so much of the field. We had so many big plays running long crossers or just simple route concepts away from Watson because you have numbers. WR is a mix of a lot of things. Route Running and Hands are the most important. Wicks looked like a budding star as a rookie and then his hands were awful, but he's still got the elite route running. Reed is just a chess piece you move all over, Doubs is pretty good at everything. Melton...I've still got some hope for. He looked so good late in '23, but I was talking about just complimenting this core. Well...that's why I said he reminds me of Adams. He's been good/bad/good/bad the last 4 years now. He wouldn't have been there in Rd5 if not for the drops his last year of College. So I think he'll come along. Reed is really good at contested catches and he's physical...he's not really an X or a Y but we run so much bunch and pre-snap motion, I don't think that's as important. If you have one guy with great feet who can beat press...Wicks is the best, but Doubs is solid, Golden looks really good at it, but the Pacers were so much better with Watson out there. You can line up Kraft, Reed and Musgrave in the bunch, Jacobs at RB...Watson or now Golden split left and the defense HAS to take a safety and play over the top or you've got what should be a high pct play. Yeah, but...that's a win right there. An elite CB and a Safety dedicated to one player. And Jefferson burned us quite a few times as well, but Jefferson is the best WR in the league(him and Chase at least). Golden is more Waddel, Smith...if he's Olave with that speed, that's great. And Watson should be back in some capacity. I'm not convinced he's done in GB.
-
Maybe. We said the same about Cooper DeJean last year. I don't want to give up our picks until later in Rd4 though. Just gonna have to hope Revel, Thomas, Morrison, Amos, one of those guys lasts until 54 and then...Nohl Wiliams until the 4th rd(I view him as a very safe pick, so...I'd be willing to take more of a risk on the CB). And then in Rd 3 give me Burch or Alexander from Toledo(probably gone) and I'd be giddy. I think DT is the biggest need now after CB. And then we need IOL. Lots of guys in the 90-120 range(on the big boards).
-
I didn't see you articulate this...which was the claim. I'd prefer to have a 6'6 245LB Calivn who runs a 4.29. But the biggest thing in getting a WR was the speed. The ability to get off the LOS and to force the defense to play with a safety over the top as that's what you lost with Watson. So in that respect, I liked Golden more than I liked the other WRs who went in the 1st rd. The body type is a smaller issue to me. The speed, route running and how elusive they are is more important. Wicks has incredible route running. He's had very good and then terrible hands his first two years. Reed is...I think he's actually more akin to St. Brown. Doubs is a little bigger(thicker at least) WR who is pretty good at finding holes in the zone. I also think Melton is still a really talented WR and Health is excellent #6.... But the 4.29 was the #1 priority, again, why I liked that Thornton from Tennessee.
-
Kinda feels like... *NEARLY everyone was happy about it... Did someone say they didn't like him because he isn't 6'4, 6'5?
-
Well hey now! Look forward to seeing some of the predictions today! Just gonna leave this here before I leave for the day; 23. Green Bay Packers: Matthew Golden, WR, Texas This marks the end of a streak for Green Bay, which hadn’t selected a receiver in the first round since 2002. The Packers needed a talent infusion at that position, however, especially with Christian Watson suffering an ACL tear in January. In Golden, the Packers are getting a field stretcher who can open up the second level for tight ends Tyler Kraft and Luke Musgrave. After two seasons at Houston, Golden transferred to Texas, where he put up terrific numbers last fall (58 catches for 987 yards and nine touchdowns). Even more impressive, he averaged 17 yards per catch. His speed separates him from other receiver prospects in this class — at the combine, Golden ran a 4.29-second 40. Oh, and his HANDS Nick Saban spoke about how good his hands were(though opinions seem to vary...I guess on this issue). Great Hands Golden is a natural "hands-catcher" who does a great job of manipulating his body to adjust to off-target throws while maintaining control through contact. He has a knack for high-pointing the ball by elevating with body control, great hand-eye coordination and good timing.
-
Yup. From his scouting report... And I'm DEFINITELY obsessed with you. It's not like you woke up this morning and AGAIN immediately started whining about...well, my post, but reworded...
-
James Jones was projected as a slot guy in 2007? LOL...sure. You and Sixto or whatever are just so...over the top negative...I don't know what happened. I'm sorry for whatever it is! I'll go back to ignoring ya. Take care and I hope you...put a lock on your cheerios. I kinda thought waking up and checking the board the FIRST post from you wouldn't immediately be you intentionally misrepresenting what I said, but also complaining...but oh well.
-
You mean the guy you knew nothing about? That very slight drop pct, primarily from his time in Houston...was enough for you to make the argument it was "literally(not figuratively) the opposite of his "scouted weakness?" Sure.
-
Jordy was drafted when they had 2 1000 yard receivers and James Jones. He didn't become a starter until his 4th year in the league. Not the strongest argument. Cobb was drafted when they had when they had Jennings, Driver, JAMES, JORDY, FINLEY....famously a poor receiving core! Or is the argument that because we lost a divisional playoff game last year, our WRs are good? Huh? No...that...that's not the argument. The argument was...and this was the extent of it; The rest of the WRing core...I think we're underrating them a touch. Any other argument you conjure up from there, I...don't know what you want me to do with.
