They've got so many SS's they're rotating them! Maybe he's the only one who's reasonably going to play in Milwaukee this year...but they do have a 2B who I think could pretty easily cover SS. They need Ortiz and Turang to play well, but...I think we've got a whole bunch of young shortstops. Some may move, but Jesus Made is a pretty big one in the system. But Pena may be a young star, Areinamo can play SS. Adamczewski has moved to 2B because of all the SS's in Carolina. I think he's untouchable because he's a SS who looks like he can stick and hit 30 HRs while staying there. Not lack of depth.
-
I'm assuming they do not plan on playing Simmons as a slot or DB. That was ALMOST certainly a mistake that I saw. I think he could be very useful vs a...Washington or a team with a mobile QB. I don't think he's going to have any regular role. He looked so good at Clemson though...and he's still just 26, so I'm not expecting much, but I am hoping they can simplify things enough for him that he can be useful.
-
Pratt has Superstar upside and...a reasonably high floor. He's a 19 year old(maybe 20 now) in AA and playing well. He's the type of player you build around, not trade in this market. And then we're trading him AND the guy who throws 100, has a nasty slider, is mixing in a Changeup that's been getting good movement...though still registering as a FB as it's coming in at 91-92. And then a curve. Both players may fizzle(any propsect could) but I'm not trading that package for Mayo. Made, Pratt...I guess Misiorowski wouldn't be untouchable, but I would hate to move on from him. I'd really like to see a Pratt-Rosario comp and who made it.
-
Where is that his comp? I've seen Gunnar Henderson, not Ahmed Rosario. That's a ridiculous package.
-
By the way, anyone mention we signed Isaiah Simmons? The 6'4 238LB LB from Clemson who....once seemed like a mix of Sean Taylor but bigger, more athletic, could cover the slot, ran a 4.39, 39 vertical, 33 3/8th inch arms, 11 foot broad jump... Still just 26 years old he seems like he could carve out a little niche role as a STs ace, I could see him as a 3rd down LBer in some 3rd and short looks, maybe playing spy vs some QBs. He's had some success. He's flashed. Not good vs the run, and they said the Packers would play him at DB...but I'm guessing that was misreported? Interesting player though. Hope for a resurgence for him...maybe?
-
Yeah, I'd definitely do that. Especially since...we're going to almost certainly be playing the same type of coverages next year. We don't have the personnel to play much man, so...Rasul in a cover 2 zone scheme, he can press, he can sink and read the QBs eyes and he can come up with turnovers. Most importantly, unless they just love these guys they have who are right now the #4 and #5 Corners, they need bodies. I'd love to see them sign Samuel Jr, but...he's got some shoulder issue that seems like a possible shoulder/neck issues. Kendall Fuller was an elite cover corner two years ago. Last year he'd have probably been our best CB. If you brought back Jaire, Fuller and Jaire would allow you to do some different things, but that's unlikely. So Fuller, Rasul, wait and see on Asante, Gilmore...someone really has to be added. If we're talking about urgency, then letting unproven guys fight it out for the 4th and 5th CB position seems.... unwise. As for Douglas...I'd also pointed out...he was bad before he came to GB the first time around.

Williams demoted from Yankees closer role
BrewerFan replied to edfunderburk's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I agree... at least with regard to the Brewers and virtually all the moves they've made. I thought a Corbin Burnes extension made sense for Baltimore...but you said "almost always," so perhaps that would have been an exception. I hope...however this whole TV deal situation plays out, it does, as the Brewers have said, end up being better for the Brewers in the long run....but we're never going to be able to swim in the same circles barring some massive shift in the economics of Baseball or some insanely wealthy Cohen like guy buying the team and deciding he doesn't care how much he loses. And even then, even assuming we have the money to keep Hader. Who is our catcher? The Padres have traded away a lineup of All-Stars, a rotation of aces and a bullpen of closers to spend more and to have...uninspiring results. The next big deals I hope the Brewers are budgeting for are Turang(not because of the start, I've just always thought he was a poor man's Turner) and then Pratt, Made, maybe Quero. I'm only half serious, but those are the type of contracts the Brewers should roll the dice on. Young players who would be hitting FA in their early 30s. The John Hart special. -
Williams demoted from Yankees closer role
BrewerFan replied to edfunderburk's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I never said we should have signed him. I very clearly said; So...that's not me saying we were NOT correct to not re-sign him, but he was very good and that didn't end up being a bad deal. Prince played every game the next two years, hit 69 HRs, .295/.387/.491 slash line. That's elite. Then was injured, came back, played another 158 games, hit .305/.378/.463 ....suffered a fluke injury and the Rangers didn't have to eat that contract as it was insured. He continued to perform at an elite level. Again...no, though...you're kinda ignoring the .69 ERA and he's been pretty dominant on balance, but...am I mad we didn't re-sign him? When did emotions come into this? It was just answering the question, there really wasn't a choice in signing Burnes or Prince or Hader or Adames...there likely won't be one in 9 years when Chourio is 30 and HE likely walks(though that may be the one exception...who knows). All I did was answer this question literally; That's it. Who has been good. Not "are we mad we didn't pay Hader 19M a year." I...don't know how you jumped to that... ....? -
Williams demoted from Yankees closer role
BrewerFan replied to edfunderburk's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I know this was rhetorical, but...who was it? Prince was a stud until the injury(and his contract insured). Burnes obviously last year and now this year and...well, I guess Hader. Cortes was a very good starting pitcher. One is terrible, the other is hurt. Hopefully Durbin becomes someone. -
I really don't blame Horst and think he's mostly been fine...bad time to extend him though. The job description should have just changed. I think hiring Doc was terrible. Billy Donovan was the guy I wanted hired. But maybe I just don't understand. It seems like irrespective of the coach, there's always that one guy...who is a really great fit and the Bucks just abandon him. One series it was George Hill in favor of Jevon Carter. I don't recall who it was last year, but this year it's AJJ. He's a guy who can guard Haliburton or Siakam. He's solid in the corner from 3, not a ringing endorsement of his offensive game but he can shoot well enough that his defensive game still makes him an overall plus IMO. For all the "The Packers need to trade for Hendrickson or they're not serious," or the Brewers need to...sign Adames, trade for Crochet, or...whatever. Not that there aren't times to go for it or that the NBA is the same, but sometimes you make a trade and you just end up worse.
-
Yeah, it'd be better if it was an ACL. An Achilles is longer and the recovery rate is lower. I think Dame CAN come back, but if he does, he's going to be limited and he's going to be more of a spot up shooter. That explosiveness that the has taking the ball to the rim or just getting free, that's going to be compromised, especially at his age... I would think it's a near certainty he's done for the 2025-26 season and I don't know where that leaves you. I hate saying this, but...it's probably smart to start to look to trade Giannis now. I would think you could still get a young star player for him(Scottie Barnes is probably close to the ceiling) and picks. Houston would be a pretty obvious choice. Jalen Green and ...I don't know who else to make the salaries work, but Giannis and AJ Green and then lots of 1sts? Golden State would be a pretty appealing option. You target their firsts in 3-4 years? Phoenix? 3 team trades...you may be building a dynasty for the Pelicans and Portland, but you can't do much about that. And if Giannis wants to stay I guess you just enjoy watching a HOF compete and finish his career here.
-
Yeah...this is a bit of a gut punch because there was a world where...MAYBE...with the room you have after getting under the 2nd apron, you could build a better supporting cast around Giannis and Dame...but now even that very slim shot is gone. Golden State won because of Steph for two reasons, the contract that allowed them to sign Durant and...well, he's Steph. There is a universe in which the Bucks had a dynasty and win 3-4 chips and that's the Bucks make the trade for a young, unproven and injured Steph instead of Ellis and then still draft Giannis that off-season...and the two grow up together. You don't have to trade for Bledsoe, you DO trade for Jrue, but you don't need to move on from him. You don't keep making one short sighted move after another...which I was fine with at the time because it was about getting that one ring and then it felt like Dame and Giannis was the perfect match in the world.
-
I'd loved their draft if I was an Eagles fan. They got a guy who...if healthy, should be an impact player from day 1 with Jordan Davis, Jevon Carter, Robinson in front of him and Baun next to him. I really would not have minded picking him. I think he's Micah Parsons...lite. But maybe better in the middle of the field. The Eagles just have it made right now. Salary cap will be an issue, they'll have to move on from Brown or Smith most likely, but that OL is stacked, the DL is stacked. The secondary...they have a star in Mitchell and DeJean may be as well. The Eagles and Lions are both built much like the 49ers were(are?) and...I think that's a big part of why you saw Banks being signed, Belton being drafted, Bond and then a gadget player like Williams picked(though I agree, I wasn't a fan). I really hope we hit on Sorrell and Belton in particular. ***The Giants draft is pretty high on my list. I think they're doing a great job of building that defense. They now have Dexter Lawrence, IMO the best DL in the league, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibdon'tknow how to spell that exactly, but adding Alexander from Toledo, Roy Robertson and THEN Abdul Carter? That's a nasty front. I don't think they needed to move up for Dart...especially since I think they'll be bad enough next year to be picking high in a much better QB class. I also think Mbow is going to be one of the better OL in this class. Korie Black later in the draft could be a really good pick for them as well.
-
No, I'm saying he's both, not just a possession WR, but if you want a "possession" WR, he's also that. 4.29 40 and in the top 5 in the power 4 schools now at big plays...AND shockingly, he can also catch the ball and pick up 6 yards on 3rd down.

How Long Is Vinny Capra's Leash With The Brewers?
BrewerFan replied to Jack Stern's topic in Brewer Fanatic Front Page News
I'm not sure what you're talking about here. I was responding to THIS; A guy starting the year at SS for the first time and struggling through APRIL is not unforseen. And I asked the question, does he get credit for Frelick, Turang, Chourio, Hoskins? I want to know how you take a team that's...first of all, 4th in the league in runs, but more importantly, 29 games into the year, has a positive run differential, a Pythagorean W/L of 16-13 and with no information other than...the Brewers are about average offensively and say, "we need to start pointing the finger at him?" And then you start going into these other issues. Using 20 pitchers is not a "quality pitching staff?" Tell that to the Dodgers. About a 1/3rd of those runs are over a few innings spread between Connor Thomas, Nestor Cortes and Joel Payamps...and there again, we're still barely below average in pitching despite having an ABOVE AVERAGE pitching staff that's either missed most of the year(Myers) or is still on the DL(as you pointed out) in Ashby, Civale, Woodruff, Hall, Cortes...I feel like I'm missing someone. The defense has been fine. Again, small sample size and recency bias. Even Turang missed a couple plays this past week, but, again, I'm not sure how that's some organizational failure. We have the same...if not a better defense than the past two years when we won the team Gold Glove. It's April 27th and you literally said it's time to start pointing the finger at one coach in the organization and pointed out you'd said it previously. That doesn't make sense to me. You have no way of knowing...certainly through this point, what impact he's had on the team. I do know this team has gotten outstanding starting pitching from a number of young pitchers and they should have 3-4 starters coming back and fillling in a LOT of those innings. Myers was our best pitcher last year, Woodruff is on his way back from a grueling rehab and I'd expect him to make a significant difference 2nd half...as Ashby did last year. Ashby is on his way back from the Oblique injuries that knocked a bunch of guys out. Logan Henderson is in AAA after showing he's more than capable, but Patrick, Quintana, Priester, have all been outstanding and Freddy Peralta has thrown like an ace. As for the offense...we knew 3B was going to be a problem. We just got Durbin up. Let him get some PT and then let them address that with the long list of prospects we have, but...again, I don't see some organizational failure. I don't know what team could lose a #2/3 in Myers, Cortes, then a 3/4 in Civale, Ashby, Hall and get through that. A team that doesn't have a 8.8B TV deal and a payroll that's probably near 400M if they didn't "defer" so much money. Maybe more importantly, Woodruff is on his way back and keeps stacking successful rehab outings and is throwing 95. I think this is the epitome of getting worked up over nothing. The backend of the Pen has been great for the most part, we have young pitchers ready...we need a 3B. As I said, hopefully Durbin will be that guy. Otherwise...We're less than 20% of the way into the season. We're fine. But...Capra has to go.- 23 replies

Silverstien wrote yesterday that sources inside the organization said nothing had changed and they still don't expect Jaire to be on the team, but...because he has no roster bonus and just a 700K off-season bonus, there's no urgency to trade him. We're definitely going to learn something from the minicamps. Does he show up, is he excused. If he shows up, is going to be on the field or will the Packers not let him(injury would make this worse). If they cut him...they absolutely have to sign another CB. Samuel if he's healthy or Fulller, Gilmore, whoever.
-
I don't know, none of them actually look that impressive when you go back and look through the years. The 49ers hits are early. Bosa, Buckner(that's a long time ago for this discussion...). We'll see how Ricky Pearsall does, but it's actually pretty surprising to me going back and looking year by year how those teams have drafted. Even the Eagles. What they did that was impressive was the way they moved up and down, but that trade that involved Wentz and then they must have traded back another year as they had multiple firsts in a couple drafts and were able to take Jevon Carter 9th, Jordan Davis 13th, they traded for AJ Brown. Just had extra 1sts to play with....which is why that Atlanta deal would have been a boring deal for this year, but a great move long term(and I think Golden is a very good pick). Of course, it we did that, the comments would be about how we don't really want to win, so...sometimes you can't win as a GM!
-
I don't think it is.
-
Ok...if Torkelson has a lesser career WAR but has played 200 more games, you realize he's been just THAT MUCH worse, right? Yes. Based on WAR. If you have one player who plays in 100 games and he adds 4 games above replacement and another who has less WAR over 300 games, the player who's added more wins is the more valuable one....
-
Yeah, I wanted to be wrong, but... he's just not clicking, swings through the high fastball, can't stay healthy... Not that I'm saying we should give up on him...he's just not gonna be much more than an injury prone, plus defensive CF who Ks a lot and occasionally runs into one and steals a few bags.
-
Yup. Obviously. Which is why I said I wanted Golden days before the draft... Who said he wasn't a deep threat?

How Long Is Vinny Capra's Leash With The Brewers?
BrewerFan replied to Jack Stern's topic in Brewer Fanatic Front Page News
What unforeseen issues? Ortiz? He's struggled the first month. Does he get credit for Turang and Frelick? I think this a little reductive. We're still early. Chourio's BA jumped up how many points today? He was just at .248, he's at .280 now. Yelich has been hot, Hoskins is hitting .300...does he get credit for any of that? Maybe it's just...a team with some players struggling. Mostly Ortiz and then 3B, a position we didn't really have anyone at and probably won't until next year...when the next tsunami of talent starts to flow.- 23 replies

So...you mean the playoffs we've made since then didn't make us a contender? The 90+ win teams? William Contreras and then Gasser, who was dominant until TJ surgery paused his MLB career, THAT is what ruined us? Do you remember what Hader did before the trade and then after? Counsell left and he still couldn't beat the Brewers, won't beat the Brewers and the Brewers farm system is absolutely stacked. Jesus Made a couple of SS for us that are...yeah, we're gonna recover from that trade that worked out overwhelmingly in our favor...- 23 replies

I mostly agree. I just...don't really understand a few things. 1-Golden He will be a possession WR. A guy that can get open and make contested catches keeps the chains moving. But a "possession" WR was the last thing I wanted. A deep threat makes those 3rd down conversations so much easier. It makes getting into 3rd and short easier, it makes...everything easier. The whole offense runs smoother. It's like a great pass rush for the defense, it makes everyone else's job easier. Christian Watson wasn't a superstar last year. He was a nice player, but we were ~4 yard better per play with him on the field. And Golden is really good at going up and getting the ball in contested catch situations...as Reed is. Obviously he won't be as good as Julio or a 6'3 big body, but a possession WR is Romeo Doubs, Wicks was the quintessential 3rd down WR/Possession WR in '23. Last year...he struggled. Kraft, Musgrave,....all possession WRs. What we were missing was that HR threat. 2-Belton-Why would you doubt he can play inside? Especially given that we've moved away from the ZBS? The edge may be an issue, we'll have to see, but I don't think there's any doubt he'll be able to kick inside and play Guard. Watson is going to miss more than a few games...on top of that, he's a FA. But I am with you, that was a head scratcher to me. I like him...but he's a luxury. https://sports.yahoo.com/article/green-bay-packers-still-expected-012340124.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall With the Packers still expected to cut Jaire(or trade)...what are we doing? Going after Ramsey? I mean...seriously, that has to be on the table. We have zero depth at CB. We're not going to have a choice but to sit back in soft zone and hope we can create pressure and then lean heavily on our Safeties. I'm with ya. But...I didn't scout the GA DT. They have such insane depth, they have guys who are projected to be 1st rd picks next year, so a guy being a rotational player could still make him an NFL caliber player. So MAYBE that's Slaton's replacement? I wish Ford was still on this roster. Suddenly, 6.5M for a DT doesn't look so bad. Not with Kenny Clark on the downside of his career. We DID sign Nazir Stackhouse. He could certainly plug up the middle. Not much else, but...again, those Bulldogs have just waves of players coming at you! Dumas Johnson, Stackhouse, Brinson...they could all help vs the run. AS for not helping much this year...it takes rookies a year, but I'd say -Golden will have a big impact -Belton will start somewhere, likely inside to start...but maybe he doesn't start until next year when Walker and Rhyan are gone. -Williams will have a role. They'll want to get him touches...but I don't think he'll have an impact at WR. -Sorrell-Limited, STs. -Oliver-I think he'll be used sparingly, but I think he'll make an impact. -Brinson...I'd guess Stackhouse is more likely to make an impact at this point. Really be nice to still have Ford. -Robinson may need to... -Williams very little CB-Easily the most baffling. Particularly with the instance on letting Jaire go. Which I get. I don't love it, but I get it...but you had to do more. Now you're desperate. Dallas, KC, they have depth there. Not sure where else...but you NEED to make a move. Asante Samuel Jr? Kendall Fuller...Rasul Douglas? I think we got much better on offense and gave Hafley some creative weapons, but no core pieces for the other side of the ball...though, I hope I'm wrong. Edge and Off-ball/PR specialist in Rd4/5 could be nice, but we still have needs.
