  1. I'm guessing they kicked the tires on him, but realized very quickly that he simply isn't obtainable based on the total contract he's looking for. It would be a franchise crippling move to sign him for the kind of money that's being discussed. I think the rumors still connecting the Brewers with Lee are pure speculation. The ongoing negotiations with him have been relatively low key, in that a lot of information isn't coming out. Some people have said the time to go all out for a starting pitcher was after 2008 with C.C. Sabathia. I'm inclined to agree. In retrospect, maybe matching the Yankees' offer to him would have been the thing to do. The ship has sailed, though.
  2. My opinion is that the season has had some relative duds, but has gotten a bit stronger the last couple episodes. Last week's episode was very good, though. I'm glad they're finally going forward with resolving the Holly/Michael situation. I also liked that they did something with Pam's new position after having not mentioned it at all recently.
  3. Yeah, that is a good point greeg. I really can't see Lucroy being dealt at this point just from a position necessity standpoint. It's really too bad Salome turned into a total bust.
  4. Would something like Loe/Gomez get it done? Or is that too much or too little? Kind of hard to evaluate a move like this.
  5. Jack Z apparently loves glovely middle infielders right now. What a wonderful new adjective! Absolutely glovely!
  6. I really don't think the Brewers are in a position to give up Lucroy right now. The other two, probably. The problem with trading Lucroy is that you are looking at a Kottaras/Nieves (or possibly Rivera or Maldonado) situation in 2011. That would be pretty bad, unless they overpay for some aging veteran catcher.
  7. Yeah, I agree with RockCo. I don't know what is taking so long with the Counsell situation. They could probably use someone like Luis Cruz at a much lower price tag if Counsell doesn't re-sign. Maybe Melvin needs to set a hard deadline with Counsell and be done with it. I would like to see Capuano back because of his versatility and to provide depth, but I agree that they shouldn't overpay for his services.
  8. He wouldn't be a bad option at all. He had a slightly down season last year, but still managed a 4.28 ERA despite a 1.403 WHIP. He's also a workhorse that you can count on for 30+ starts a season. As the link says, he will make $14 million this season, though. If the Brewers were willing to absorb his entire salary, I imagine it wouldn't take a ton to trade for him. Not really sure what Williams is looking to add to his team at this point, though.
  9. The Royals wouldn't have much use for Hart. They have plenty of OF/1B types already. The more I think about these trade ideas, the less I think the Brewers match up with the Royals for Greinke at all. Let some other team like the Rangers or Yankees (whoever doesn't sign Lee) gut their farm systems for him.
  10. Well, I think Greinke is a total pipe dream at this point anyway. I was just using his name as an example.
  11. If the Brewers can get a Greinke or Garza type starter in a trade for prospects, I really doubt they will turn around and trade Fielder. I think at that point they'll feel they can make a good run in 2011 with Fielder at first base. Then he'll either get traded by the deadline if the team is out of it, or be left to walk in free agency.
  12. Roads around here appear to be relatively decent at this point. Just a slight flurry happening right now as the snow seems to be dying down. We're going to my parents to watch the Packer game, but they just live on the other side of town. Glad we don't have to do any big traveling otherwise.
  13. I disagree. I think Parra looked really good out of the pen last year after he was pulled out of the rotation. I hope they keep him around as a middle reliever type.
  14. If Fielder gets traded, I would rather just use Gamel or McGehee (or possibly Hart) at first base. Overbay is still a decent player, but not worth spending much money on for a team like Milwaukee. He made just under $8 million last season. I would guess he might expect a pay cut at this point, but would still probably cost $4 million or so to sign.
  15. RockCo, as pointed out earlier, Shields BABIP last season was extremely high. I wouldn't base the decision to trade or not trade for a guy based solely on the amount of hits he gave up.
  16. Just for fun, from baseball-reference.com, James Shields comparisons through age 28: Similar Pitchers through 28 Carl Pavano (973) Oil Can Boyd (972) Jake Westbrook (970) Bill Wegman (969) Scott Baker (969) Joe Blanton (965) Aaron Harang (965) Charles Nagy (962) Adam Eaton (961) Jason Schmidt (960) Not a bad looking list at all. If Shields is "only" a 3/4 SP going forward, I think that is still quite valuable to the Brewers. Gallardo/Marcum/Wolf/Shields/Narveson would be a pretty solid rotation.
  17. Sounds good to me. I'm sure the Brewers are fairly eager to get out of Huntsville by this point.
  18. Shields has a sort of interesting contracts. From Cot's: 11:$4.25M, 12:$7M club option ($2M buyout), 13:$9M club option ($1.5M buyout), 14:$12M club option ($1M buyout) value of 2012-14 club options may increase package to $38M performance bonuses based on innings pitched, starts, and Cy Young voting may increase package to $44M So he'd be under control for four years, with the final three being option years.
  19. You're probably right. Especially about Gamel not having much value to KC. We'd probably have to do Odorizzi, Rogers, Cain or something. I think that's too costly to Milwaukee.
  20. Got rear ended on the interstate last night, on the way to the Bucks game. It was four lanes of traffic, moving (though slowly), so we couldn't pull over or anything. Fortunately the damage was extremely minor. Still, you'd think when it's bumper to bumper, stop & go traffic, people would learn to slow the hell down!
  21. We'd probably have to give up at least Odorizzi, Jeffress, Cain, and maybe one or two other pieces to get him. I just don't know if that's worth it for two years of a starting pitcher.
  22. I really don't believe they're still seriously in on him. They reportedly already made two offers on him, which KC turned down. I think people are just re-hashing old rumors.
  23. Endaround brings up a valid point about Suppan. The Brewers actually got decent value for him the first couple seasons of his contract. It was the last two years (combined with the final option year buyout) that made it a terrible deal.
  24. I agree that a two year deal would be livable. It doesn't seem like there is much going on with the trade market, and I would rather sign Pavano than overpay on a risky "injury guy" like some have been suggesting. That said, I'm guessing Pavano ends up re-signing with Minnesota at this point.
  25. Have there been any other halfway decent starting pitchers dealt this winter so far? None that I can really think of. The Brewers desperately needed a starting pitcher and got one for only one prospect. Granted, they gave up their top rated prospect, but you have to give to get in these deals. They also avoided way overpaying in a trade, or signing a mediocre free agent starter. At least they now have some certainty at the top of the rotation going into next season. I think there's less and less to criticize Melvin on about this trade as time passes.
