  1. I don't see the downside of paying the rest of Hoffman's salary this year. The money is already allocated. If it can help get a decent prospect in return, what's the real issue? He should have some value. I saw a stat that said in his last 15 appearances, he has an ERA well below 2.00. Some team could use him down the stretch, I have to believe.
  2. Shouldn't this be in "Statistical Analysis"?
  3. He's batting over .300 with 30 SBs this season. Pretty nice pickup for the Dodgers, actually.
  4. Hmmm...that's interesting Tennek. Maybe there's more to this than I would have originally thought.
  5. He actually only has two years left on his contract, with a 2013 option that has a $1.5 million buyout. I tend to think he wouldn't be claimed right now, due to the length remaining on his deal.
  6. Slightly annoyed aside: I follow this stuff on Twitter quite a bit, and it seems like every other two bit "tweeter" has to make some lame joke about Prince Fielder's weight. It's like, "Yes, everyone knows he's a big dude. Yeah, I'm sure his diet consists solely of twinkes and ho-hos, huh huh huh...get over it already."
  7. You can find probably as many examples to support protection as you can find that it doesn't exist.
  8. Well said, Patrick. I don't like when some people seem to think that fans don't have a right to get upset when a star player leaves. Just smacks of the whole Colin Cowherd/ESPN type mentality where the big markets are best, "what's good for them is good for the game", and small markets should be happy with whatever success they have, etc. The Brewers drafted Prince, paid him a very handsome signing bonus (which his dad apparently stole a chunk of, but that's not the Brewers' fault), and we'll have enjoyed him for just five years (assuming he gets dealt this off-season). We won't get back what he's truly worth in a trade, because other teams know damn well that the Brewers have a 0.00% chance of retaining him beyond 2011. Maybe five years of service is enough, but it would be nice if a greedy agent couldn't force small market teams' hands in increasingly predictable fashion.
  9. I am part of the crowd that says the idea of protection is way overblown. Whatever is "wrong" with Braun this season, it isn't due to protection (or lack there of) anyway.
  10. Meche is apparently done for the season due to needing shoulder surgery.
  11. Well, has the direction changed again after last night's debacle?
  12. How is your credit score right now? Canceling one card shouldn't really hurt you that much beyond the short term. Paying an annual fee on any credit card is rather silly, even if it's just $20/year. Dave Ramsey says, "Don't worship at the altar of the great FICO."
  13. Yes, the results were lousy, but that's probably because Gallardo just didn't pitch very well last night. No one on here is saying Gallardo is a bad pitcher or that he sucks, just that he didn't have a good game last night. I'm not sure why you're defending this point so vociferously. And you're criticizing my use of the term, "ace?" Nitpicking very much, are you?
  14. Any way you cut it, it was a bad outing. Some bad luck involved? Sure. But it was still a lousy outing for the guy who is supposed to be our "ace."
  15. Well, gee, no. It's much more exciting to see shortstops in the outfield and pitchers used as pinch runners and pinch hitters, right? RIGHT???
  16. Oh, I agree that he has a right to sign wherever he wants for whatever amount he can get. I am just not looking forward to the inevitable vocal angst when he does so. I don't want people to pretend he was driven from Milwaukee by a cheap owner or something.
  17. Oh, that's just great. Another sign of what serious contenders the Brewers are. A pitcher pinch hitting in the third inning, and now a shortstop playing in the outfield.
  18. He's never actually come out and said, "I want to stay here." He has turned down two extension offers in the past (one for over $100 million recently). If he really wanted to stay here and play on a competitive team, he wouldn't expect a franchise crippling contract. Since that is what he's apparently looking for, he does not want to remain a Brewer. Actions speak louder than words.
  19. I'd prefer to have guys on the team that actually want to be here. Prince apparently doesn't want to stay, so...adios, Prince. It was nice knowing you for a while.
  20. Well, they've already tried twice with Prince and he doesn't seem interested in sticking around. Hart has given lip service to wanting to stay, but his agent apparently doesn't want to work anything out with Melvin. Maybe Rickie Weeks is a possibility. I do agree that I really don't want them playing around too much in free agency. Hopefully Melvin has learned his lessons and will try to be much more efficient with how he spends his payroll going forward.
  21. Well, trading Katin and Dillard wouldn't exactly be a huge loss at this point, but what are you realistically going to get for either of them?
  22. It seems like they're trying to fast track him to the majors. I have no problem with that, as at some point he has to step up and do solid work above A-ball.
  23. What young players is Edmonds really going to help at this point? Hart and Braun don't really need that many pointers (OK, maybe Braun, but it's not like Edmonds is going to give him a lot of advice). Gomez doesn't need help defensively, and the world's greatest hitting coach doesn't seem like he'd be able to get through to Gomez at this point ("stop swinging at crap"...what else are you going to tell the guy?). I'd trade him if any team was willing to give up anything of value for him. You won't get draft picks for him when he likely retires after the season.
  24. I guess I'd be comfortable with that. Anything more though, and it's a way too risky and unwarranted overpay. Of course, this all assumes that Weeks actually wants to stay and isn't hell bent on going to free agency like Prince.
  25. Also you have to remember that relievers tend to peak a bit later, and can often sustain success later into their careers if they stay healthy.
