    Does anyone know what the recommended slot was? Just curious. Doesn't seem like a bad deal for the Nats on the face of it. They'll still control him for two more years after the four year deal, as well.

    I think a lot of people forgot that part. After the Yankees' spending binge this off-season, allocating over $400 million on three players, Cashman asking Melvin to pick up part of a 1 year, $10 million contract was ludicrous. Melvin was probably right to turn the deal down, just based on the principle of it.

    Good point. Another game they really needed to win, and they lose yet again. Not much else to say at this point, other than hope they can possibly take the next two.

    What? Anyway, like I said earlier, it's pretty clear the Brewers are realistically out of it. I just hope they can somehow keep things interesting into September...I have tickets for five more games this season, and would like to see the team at least have a chance to win those games. The offense has to put up double digit runs every team to give themselves a chance to win. It has to be frustrating being Braun or Fielder, standing in the field, and watching the pitchers on the team putting you behind almost every inning.

    Yeah, Cameron's cold streak is wearing thin on me, though I do appreciate the 2 run bomb earlier.

    I don't think you can blame the Brewers' implosion squarely on one reliever, closer or not.

    Yeah...maybe Fielder will fire Satan, otherwise I'm not going to hold my breath for him to re-sign, unfortunately. Maybe between this off-season and the next, the Brewers can publicly offer him a huge contract, akin to the offer they made to Sabathia. Put Fielder into the court of public opinion and put the pressure on him to show his loyalty.

    Kendall is hitting in the neighborhood of .215 this month, and .230 on the year. Enough is enough.

    Cordero had one really bad month with Texas that year (April) and lost the closer's job. After that he was very good. The signs were there that he was still a very effective reliever if you look below the surface numbers.

    According to the lineup I got via McCalvy on Twitter, Kendall is listed as starting. Villanueva is on the mound tonight.

    What's the point of paying Hardy $6-8 million to be a utility player when you can pay Counsell $1-2 million and get better production (at least this season)?

    Yep...and the calls for trading for a Greinke or Cain are particularly nerving. Great pitchers, both young and relatively cheap...yeah, clearly SF or KC would be dying to unload either one, right?

    I have to believe there's a reason for some of the defensive blunders he's seemed to have made (which really, have been far between each other, generally). I have to believe he may be a bit hurt.

    Me too. All the more reason to keep him down in AAA long enough to get that extra year of service time.

    I do think the idea that Melvin should have had the clairvoyance to trade Hardy and/or Hart is a bit misguided. You can argue that he should have done more to acquire better pitching, and if that meant dealing either of those to, then so be it. But to say he should have known both would have such down years is just arm chair quarterbacking after the fact. According to the statheads on here, Hardy was worth way more than his current salary...so why trade him after such a great year? People would have been screaming if they tried to make Escobar the starting shortstop and he struggled early. No one knew Counsell would have such a tremendous rebound year, either. As far as trading Hart, that would have just opened up another gap in the outfield. Hart basically only had a couple rough months last year, but overall was a very good player. And yes, the repeated calls for trading for a young starting pitcher are kind of tiresome. Like fondy said, teams just don't trade those kinds of pitchers much anymore. Maybe because they are sick of giving out Jeff Suppan type contracts.

    I sort of agree with you. I think Melvin and Co. need to take a hard look at whether or not they can upgrade the pitching significantly (ie. do more than adding another Looper/Suppan type starter). If the answer is a realistic "no", they should add a Bobby Abreu or Adam Dunn, or someone like that. Trying to keep Lopez isn't a bad idea either, but with how well he's been playing, I'm not sure the Brewers will be able to afford him. They'll also have to do their annual bullpen restructuring as well.

    Sorry to hear that, Backupcatchers. Those old Pioneer receivers are usually pretty nifty. I actually have one from the mid '70s in my garage right now. Bought it second hand from the grandfather of a former co-worker.

    I still think Sabathia would have saved some of the wear & tear we are seeing that has affected the bullpen currently. It's all water under the bridge at this point. I would have loved to see Sabathia stay in Milwaukee, but I have to believe that a contract that big would have ended up crippling the Brewers long term.

    Got a tweet from McCalvy that said they are "dotting the I's and crossing the T's" with Davis. Might even be announced today.

    Sounds like the Nats have had a deal on the table (supposedly a record setting one) with Strasburg for some time now. Will be interesting to see if they get it done with the deadline looming close.
