  1. Who really cares, though? I'll take one jerkish future Hall of Famer for one year if it helps us get back to the playoffs. I've never heard of Johnson being a locker room disruption or bad teammate, as you did note. That's the only thing that might matter, but it doesn't seem to be a factor with the Big Unit.
  2. Gwynn will never be a starter in Milwaukee. No need to worry there.
  3. This is the only problem I have with the guy. He's preaching to the choir when he's ripping on Bonds. He doesn't need to do it everytime his name is brought up. Otherwise, he's about as good as it gets. There's some other guys he will never hesitate to rip on. I know Sidney Ponson is one. I think Gary Sheffield as well (go figure).
  4. Melvin has never confirmed anything...but so many outlets have reported it as 5/100, that it seems that must be the case.
  5. Maybe Escobar is going to get traded?
  6. Um...yeah. Guys from different teams hang out with each other all the time. Assuming your story is valid, I wouldn't read too much into it either way.
  7. I'm slightly surprised...I thought maybe he'd stick around for one more year.
  8. There were no reports of the Brewers having interest in Jorge Julio until he was signed either. Probably because Jorge Julio doesn't register as a blip on anyone's radar, where as Dunn is one of the better free agents available this off season. I could be wrong, and the Brewers could already be talking with Dunn's agent, but I'm not going to get excited about the possiblity right now.
  9. Too bad there have been zero reports saying the Brewers have any interest in Dunn at all.
  10. Has there been any further talk of the Brewers possibly making another contract offer to Fielder, or is that pretty much dead at this point after he turned them down last year?
  11. Well, the sport has been around for over 100 years...it's bound to have a lot of people in it. I don't get why so many people think the Hall gets diminished if someone "borderline" gets voted in. It doesn't take away from the accomplishments of people like Ruth, Aaron, Mays, etc. The Baseball Hall of Fame is still the only Hall of Fame that means anything at all. Really, if you look at the numbers, there are only about 200 MLB players in the Hall. That does not count Negro Leaguers or umpires, announcers, executives, etc. That works out to less than 2 MLB players inducted for each year of MLB's existence. That really does not seem that out of line to me.
  12. One thing to keep in mind, while Blyleven is 5th on the all time strike outs list, when he retired, he was 3rd all time.
  13. That is probably true. I think a lot of us are just a bit over anxious, due to the Brewers having such a huge offer laying on the table for the top prize of the off-season. Pretty much an unheard of circumstance. Once that is resolved, a lot more things are going to start popping across the league.
  14. I really disagree wtih everything you wrote, bklyn. No "top flight closers" have been signed yet, by any team, and paying a middle reliever less than a million bucks for a one year deal certainly doesn't preclude the Brewers from doing so going forward. I don't see how you can take a pretty mundane move as a sign of things to come. I also didn't get your reference to Mota...he would be more expensive, and guys like him won't be signing a minor league deal unless coming of an injury.
  15. Griffey is done. He was a Hall of Fame player with the emphasis on was.You don't think some AL team wouldn't bring him back on a one year deal? I think he still has a little bit left in the tank...not much, but enough to help a team out. That said, he wouldn't fit the Brewers at all and has supposedly said in the past that he doesn't enjoy being in Milwaukee.
  16. I agree. I just think it's funny reading the comments on Haudricourt's blog like "this guy is going to be our closer???" Just because he's the first reliever we signed this off-season, that makes him automatically the closer?
  17. I'm not that impressed...most of the analysts don't seem to think Greene is going to become the big time SS he was originally billed as. The Cards have had luck with these guys before, that's for sure. Maybe LaRussa can get something out of him. Barring some huge moves, the Cardinals still don't worry me too much next year. I think they're still at least a year away from being serious contenders again.
  18. I liked Jim one upping Pam at the very end..."I need four copies." It was nice to see a little bit different side of the Pam character tonight, how she was really kissing up to Michael to get the new chairs. The whole subplot with Dwight tricking Angela into marrying him was pretty funny as well.
  19. I agree...I would like Lowe as well, but signing him to more than a three year deal would be extremely risky. You would think the Boras factor could work for the Brewers at some point...not saying he would give the Brewers a discount, but Melvin has certainly been willing to work with him before...maybe he would let Lowe sign for something that wasn't a completely insane amount.
  20. Exactly. This will probably be similar to what Melvin did last year...load up on a bunch of relatively affordable "power arms" to fill the pen, and then maybe one marquee closer type (Hoffman? Wood?). We made the playoffs last year, may as well go with the same plan again.
  21. Haudricourt reports Melvin is planning on meeting with CC's agent "Monday or Tuesday" at the winter meetings to hopefully get a response on the Brewers' offer. Hopefully by mid week next week we can find out if all hope is dead or not.
  22. Yeah, those two acquisitions would make me feel much better about the team's pitching at this point.
  23. Just curious how you came upon these...they look pretty cool!
  24. I totally agree about McDonald's being beyond "blah". Used to love it when I was younger, now I can't stand it. The wife and I went there last weekend when we took her brother back to campus, and I tried the Chicken Selects...talk about disappointing. They should at least make sure the things somewhat resemble how they're pictured. Can't eat their burgers anymore, either. Just totally bland.
  25. I only had Steak & Shake once and thought it was incredibly bland. Also thought the atmosphere in the restaurant was really weird. The only one I ever ate at is now closed, anyway.
