  1. I think it's a silly idea, but I'm going to go ahead and sign the petition anyway.
  2. Clearly a sign of great things to come!
  3. Hey guys, just an update...we are officially set with our reservation at Friday's for March 22nd at 7 PM. Please keep informing us here if you plan to attend, if you haven't done so already. The more, the merrier!
  4. I'm optimistic. He's coming in (hopefully) 100% healthy and with a big chip on his shoulder and something to prove. .310/.360/.495, 30 HR, 105 RBI
  5. It's also worth noting that his father apparently died from colon cancer, so it's worth them being extra cautious.
  6. That's an assumption made by the author. Actually, this article from December says otherwise, and includes from Jeffress' agent, Joshua Kusnick. http://www.denverpost.com/marijuana/ci_24809226/medicinal-marijuana-striking-out-major-league-baseball The demands of their 162-game season grinds down Major League Baseball players, often turning nagging injuries into chronic ailments. But there is no provision in MLB's collective bargaining agreement with the players to allow use of marijuana for medicinal reasons. That frustrates agent Joshua Kusnick, who represents Jeremy Jeffress, a pitcher with the Toronto Blue Jays. Jeffress suffers from epilepsy. The seizures from that disease nearly ruined his career and could have cost him his life, until he discovered that marijuana helped him control his condition. He has since found another medication that has proved effective. "Had Jeremy not been able to use a suitable medication, the outcome would have been for us to pursue legal action," Kusnick said. "Basically, if he couldn't have found something other than pot to control his seizures, baseball would have said 'too bad.' Which is insane, because this was ultimately not a lifestyle decision by Jeremy. It was a life decision."
  7. Great point that hasn't been expounded upon much. Good job, 'stache. I just tweeted a link to this.
  8. Couldn't you relocate for a position though (ie. move to Fort Atkinson)? Might be tough given your apparent situation, but you're really limiting yourself if you're not willing to.
  9. In my experience, college professors don't really know anything about if resume and cover letter are really marketable are not, so I wouldn't take them at their word. None of my college professors were any real help with finding a job, frankly. Still, if they have any connections to any actual people in industry, it couldn't hurt to contact them. The cold truth is, companies aren't sitting around waiting for you to call them or send in your application. You basically have to go get yourself a job if you really want one. It's a lot of work and it can be tough, but you need to keep at. Applying for 2-3 jobs a week isn't anywhere near enough. You need to be working any contacts you have, attending any meet ups as others have suggested...really anything to get your face and name out there.
  10. I wonder if you could also look into doing some type of free lance work on the side? If you get real desperate, you could contact local firms and tell them you're willing to work for free just to get experience in their work environment (basically an informal internship). I've heard of that working. I agree with Game05 that simply retreating back into school isn't a good solution.
  11. I don't know the exact rules for this sort of thing, but I wonder if they worked out some sort of undisclosed buyout on his contract? Either way, it is a classy move by Dempster.
  12. Game05 makes a good suggestion with contacting Cygnus. I used to know a couple people that work there, but unfortunately not anymore. I would just advise you to work any and all contacts you have. Lean on your teachers from school, classmates, etc. These days it's less what you know, and more who you know. Yeah, it's cliche, but it's the absolute truth these days.
  13. Supposedly they approached him last year about this and didn't even really get any response. We'll see if this actually leads to anything.
  14. Ditto. I hate the Yankees, but I can't really say the same about Derek Jeter. He seemed like he was always happy and enjoying just playing baseball, despite being in the biggest market in the world and being paid huge sums of money (I guess that could make anyone happy...but it doesn't). First ballot Hall of Famer, and deservedly so.
  15. Hopefully you're right...However, if true, we need to temper our expectations for who that trade would be for (i.e Smoak or Ike as has been discussed at length). Anyone recall the last blockbuster Spring Training trade? I'm not sure. As far as the Brewers, while not a blockbuster, the Cutter Dykstra for Nyjer Morgan trade turned out to be a huge win for the Brewers that addressed an area of need. I can't see Mark Attanasio sitting back after having watched the merry-go-round at 1B last season, and allowing Doug Melvin to stand pat this season. I think a trade or surprise free agent signing will happen.
  16. I personally think our Opening Day starting first baseman isn't even on the roster yet. Especially after the Garza signing.
  17. I would just ask him. It might not be a big deal to him, but maybe it is.
  18. Yup, hated when the Brewers faced him, because they usually seemed clueless going against "Roy O". Very good pitcher, but not a Hall of Famer. Still had a heck of a career, though.
  19. I've long ago resigned myself to not looking to professional athletes for moral guidance. I intend to teach my son the same thing when he is older. We already have a known liar and cheat on our team, as well as a known drunk driver, so it's not like the Brewers are some hallowed sanctuary of baseball purity. I don't know what K-Rod did or didn't do...maybe he is a scumbag. I'll say he probably is...I just don't see the need to cast down moral judgement when none of us know the full story and he's never been convicted of a crime. There are two sides to every story. As far as the dollars...it "seems" like a lot of money, but I don't think it's really out of line for a one year contract for an established veteran reliever these days. That's just how baseball is.
  20. They're supposed to spread them out over the length of the sandwich. If you've seen a pattern of it happening, you should write a complaint email to Subway.
  21. Anyone here still watching ROH? I tuned in for a bit last night (got bored of the Olympics), and was impressed that they now are using HD cameras (of course, they used to have those when they were on HDNet). Wrestling seemed decent enough. Saw a tag match with Jimmy Jacobs and his partner (sorry, forget his name) against two younger guys. Good stuff.
  22. Pretty sure K-Rod has never been convicted of any crimes, so I'm not sure where people get off on calling out his characters and such.
  23. I imagine there's all kinds of places you could do it. I would just find a good local bar that has a back room or something and call and ask if you can use it on a specific date. Probably want to avoid really busy times like a Saturday night or something. I've never gotten to do a baseball draft in person, though. It's always been online, due to disparity of locales of the people participating.
  24. I picture a 45 year old Betancourt telling some team somewhere, "I think I'm ready to retire...but if you're going to pay me THAT MUCH, then OK, you get Yuni for one more year..."
