Really pleased with Gasser. For some reason it seems like a lot of people always forget how good he is. I think he can be a great #4 starter. Hoping he makes the team. -
Hard for me to not see Perkins making this team. He’s essentially the best teammate in the clubhouse, switch-hitting is important, and he is a better defender than Lockridge. Lockridge made multiple defensive misreads and miscues last year, diving at the wrong times, misjudging balls in gaps, that Perkins hasn’t done at all in 3 years. That doesn’t mean Lockridge isn’t a great defender, but Perkins might just have the ability to be a platinum glove winner if he was an every day player. I am excited about this newfound offensive ceiling for Lockridge. I want to see him continue to prove it in AAA, as spring training results mean…..absolutely nothing. Also, Mitchell was terrible last year. Although I do believe he’s a guy that’ll put up good numbers if he has time to get in rhythm, he never has that time. So I believe there’s a pretty big chance that even if he doesn’t have a season ending injury, his playing time may end up being limited by ineffectiveness at some point this year.

Question about staff - Does anyone know if joltin Jace Peterson is still going to be in his “unofficial” partime dugout role? I think he just joins the team as a coach at home segments of the schedule? I remember players saying they really like having him around. I know he’s a consultant or advisor for the organization but I’m referring more to this specific role. Thanks

I agree with everything said here. Really don’t want Ashby’s fragile success interfered with in any way - I love him where he is. I think Woody is close so they could roll with the 5 you mentioned, and then quickly replace whichever one (if any) is struggling as soon as Woody is back. I think the fact Crow has had such a hard time staying healthy, coupled with how soft he throws, has the Crew transitioning him to the pen. At least for now, is what Murphy made it sound like. For what it’s worth also, Drohan is throwing as hard as ever. Was up a couple MPH last year, and another MPH this spring!

Great stuff! I have a couple questions - does Hookie really only work with starters? I mean I get that’s his specialty but as the lead pitching coach and essentially the league’s premier pitching coach, I have to think he’s involved with every pitcher on the 26, if not 40 man roster to some extent. Also - with no bench coach, does anyone have any idea who is the heir presumptive to take over when Murphy inevitably gets tossed during a couple games this year? Again great article.

I think it’s easy to forget how many guys start off their career mostly leaning on 2 pitches. Freddy, Jimmy Nelson, Marco Estrada, even Yovani to name a few. It’s not super common for a starting pitcher, but looking back on a lot of guys careers, it can take til a second or third year in the big leagues to round out an arsenal. This kid is a smart, hard worker with moxie and determination. I have no doubt he’ll figure out a third pitch. This could be that pitch. When he does, I agree he has more potential than a lot of his peers.

I think Ashby has pretty clearly proved he can’t hold up as a starter. 1) He has been starkly ineffective as a starter 2) more importantly, his body seems to hold up much better as a reliever. But even if one disagrees with my assessment of his performance as a starter, I think the fact the Brewers brass assembled so much starting pitching depth, and specifically left handed starting pitching in this most recent trade, proves that they don’t see him as a starter going forward. I also think it proves they don’t see Hall and Zerpa has starters going forward. Ashby does make a lot of money for a relief pitcher on the Crew. However, he has been downright dominant in that roll. Pressing him into a roll that his body can’t handle, and that he has performed very poorly in, at the expense of better options, simply because of his price tag, seems a lot more akin to the thinking of a Doug Melvin led regime than a Matt Arnold led regime. Time will tell and of course I could be wrong, but I am very confident we won’t see Ashby start any games for the Brewers this year. Outside of being an opener of course (which he failed miserably at in the playoffs).

I’m not defending a major leaguer making stupid plays/not hustling. However - there is a big difference between playing for the hustle kings of the MLB with a manager like Murph, and a team that is perennially in the playoffs, than there is playing for one of the worst franchises in all of sports. How many times have we seen a player get bogged down by the negativity of playing on a ****** team go to a playoff team and be revitalized? Andrew Vaughn is a great example. He was quite obviously reinvigorated playing for the Brewers. If anything like that happens for Rengifo, I think I’m gonna like the Brewers third baseman this year. And if the one and only Pat Murphy can’t get him to hustle and focus, he probably won’t be in the Bigs too much longer.

I think this is the ideal lineup. I also sincerely hope Murph gives Yeli more days off against lefties this year. The reason being - although DHing puts much less wear and tear on your body, days off seem to benefit Yelich’s body a lot in holding up throughout the course of the season. Also, he did not hit lefties well enough to justify being a designated hitter against then last year. Ideally they would put The Sanchize in at catcher and force Contreras to be DH against most lefties, but I suspect Contreras will convince Murph to let him catch more than that. I do like this lineup and although I am wary about Rengifo, I do think his offensive potential is a bit higher than Durbin’s. I think his floor is lower too.

I wonder if the Mets big league pitching coach instructed him to just ride the sinker when he got to the bigs. The way he changed his arsenal after having so much success the latter have off the year is strange.

Definitely. His arm may never be the same, but last year was the nadir. Even getting between a 50 and 55 will be just fine. Also he’s only gonna get into a better rhythm offensively too from here. No one comes back in rhythm after a year and a half off. I think a lot of people are sleeping on both him and Logan Hendershot.

“depend on his feel for communication” Trueblood just invented a new scouting term that I am going to use in every context of life. In fact on Monday I’m going to let my boss know he doesn’t have a good “feel for communication” :)

I just always remind myself that Pratt’s numbers probably would have looked awesome if he was at least half the year in A+ like he could have (should have?) been. A lot of times when young guys are in the high minors the game might be moving so fast that getting to their A swing and stuff like that may be low on the priority list. But then, you look at his strikeout/walk ratio, for a 20 year old! I have a feeling if he repeated AA with everything moving slower he would probably juice some balls big time. Either way, a great defensive shortstop with a good eye who draws walks and good bat to ball skills, with good speed and savvy…..is a good player. If, perhaps, a little bit of a throwback player.

Man I’m “jazzed as hell” that both Baseball America and now Pipeline have Fischer as the number one 3b prospect! I know there are several guys who are currently listed as shortstops but actually probably should be listed as 3rd basemen or at 2nd, but still. I am excited about this guy! And I absolutely think he is going to stick at 3rd.
