My concern with Joey is that I fear he is just not a very bright individual. I really don’t mean that to be disrespectful and condescending, although it’s hard to say that without it coming off that way. That said, the Brewers seem to like players (as do I) that tend to play smart baseball and make heady adjustments. Joey seems to be very talented instinctively, but when it comes to swing decisions I have rarely seen someone make such poor decisions. Maybe it has nothing to do with intelligence, and comes mores from something like anxiety or pressure. We obviously know not keeping those things in check can tank at bats. Whatever the case, I have not seen another individual pass on so many balls down the pipe, and choose to swing at such horrid offerings. I just fear that is something that is not likely to be “fixed” if he couldn’t fix it over 500 plus plate appearances last year. On the other hand, he has never looked the same at the plate since his neck injury mid 2024. So perhaps it is not mental and is more physiological. I am hoping for the best, but in the case of his offense, I am prepared for the worst - in the league :(

Thank you so much. As a side note - do you think he is a legit equally effective switch hitter or more one of these guys who is better from the left side but still ok from the right side? Or possibly more like Ketel Marte and good from the left side and downright dominant from the right? Or wayyyyy too soon to tell? I see his splits, but you are able to divine much more from his swings.

Very interesting. Becoming a loaded front office :) I’ve long assumed Doug Melvin’s position was mostly an honorific or sinecure, but they do already have former GM Matt Klentak in that role. Add that to 3 assistant GMs, that’s pretty impressive. Only an organization like the Brewers could do that without the threat of egos constantly getting in the way.

I guess I’m at the point where I’d like to see them put some good trade packages together. When they acquired William Contreras and Willy Adames before that, each trade changed the complexion of the team. Even if they had paid an actual reasonable prospect price for Contreras, it still would have been a really good trade. At this point it feels like they are hoarding prospects a bit, and I would like to see them turn some of those prospects into some young franchise players. There’s obvious reasons against doing this, but their farm system has never been in a stronger place to do so. -
I agree it’s not a reach. However, I would like to avoid him starting in any way - there is a jarring gap between his starter/reliever splits, but more importantly, getting Ashby through last season healthy is a bit more of a miracle than we seem to think. If that works for his body, messing with that because he gets paid a certain amount or for any other reason seems like too big a risk for this team.

What could Freddy Peralta fetch in a trade?

Freddy is my favorite Brewer and it will be a sad day to see him go - a true Brewer through and through - if they do trade him, seeing what the Rays got for Baz makes me extremely bullish on the haul the Crew could get for Peralta. Baz doesn’t have near the value Freddy does to a contending team. -
I would love a Mitchell/Perkins left right platoon in general.

Yeah I think it would be more expensive than the packages offered up in this article. But I think more along the lines of Pratt OR Pena. A package built around one of those two guys should get it done.

Well then I guess they need to trade him? He is not capable of being a starting pitcher in the big leagues, for myriad reasons.

Like Matt said, this could be a string of larger moves, and this lefty seems to have a lot of potential…..however Mears was better than Zerpa last year and Collins is far better than Badoo, and much more versatile besides. People really wrote him off after one bad month last year. Badoo has had several bad years. Having an option year (Zerpa) is nice, but it still seems like they have potentially downgraded two players on their roster. Furthermore, Ashby has no business being in the rotation and the Brewers need to leave well enough alone. He has turned into an ace reliever and does not have the health/ability/mentality to be a starter. His career starter reliever splits are downright staggering. On line with a Wade Davis or someone of the sort. I have come to trust Arnold more than Stearns even, and I was down on the Priester trade initially last year too, but I struggle to see how our roster has improved, if not gone in the opposite direction. Edit: That ground ball rate IS sexy.

At this point I feel he should never pitch more than one inning for health reasons. When he was tried as a one inning reliever by Baltimore in 2023, he had pretty much the most successful stretch of his career. Also, he has lost so much heat on his fastball, one inning stints would allow it to play up.

It is a big outlay but since it’s only for a year, maybe Mark was willing to spend it due to it being a special franchise icon, extremely short term, and getting some extra playoff revenue. In fact, I could see Mark subtly bragging about said expenditure during Brewers On Deck or something.

Well said. Although I’m putting Gasser well ahead of Myers, Ashby, and Hall on the starting pitching depth chart. And as far as Hall goes - he is so profoundly unreliable they should strongly consider just making him a one inning reliever at this point. His stuff would play up, he could pitch fewer innings, and when the Orioles put him in that position he had easily the most success he’s had in his career. -
I could see Pratt, Wilken, and Hendershot getting the job done for Buxton eh?

Well, the GM always has the final say. And is mostly in charge of who runs the draft. So the responsibility/credit/blame does fall at his doorstep.

A lot of times it takes those small guys a few years to learn how to keep their velocity throughout the long season. He also had never had much of a workload in the minors. I think this past year will be a great experience for him to have under his belt and boy I am bullish on him! Always leery of those damnable flexor strains though.

Well, I have watched every game, not just one. Some games the refs have been downright absurd, such as the one to which you are referring. Some games they have been officiating the game in a pretty standard way. Green has been absolutely putrid on defense this year, and has two fouls per first quarter on top of that, every game. He of course will not shoot 49% over an entire season. Taurean Prince shot 44% from 3 last year and is another one trick pony and he, indeed, makes the minimum.

Man this A.J. Green extension is not looking so wise right now. Obviously early but his stunning lack of athleticism and intelligence really limit him. Constant foul trouble, terrible defense, one trick pony on offense. Those kind of guys are generally worth the minimum or not much over.
