  1. Although I am displeased with this trade, it does appear his velocity is up a bit this year, no?
  2. Not only do I agree with all of the above sentiments, but this is the type of trade that really frustrates. Just like many of the Brewers trades during the season last year, they acquired pitchers who have struggled so they could buy low in hopes of working their magic with them. I don’t mind that as a basic strategy - but when you hue towards that strategy too much, you get situations like this year - a lot of not especially talented guys that you hope to coax an over performance out of. I find that frustrating, but still can dig it during a retooling year. But to pay a heavy ransom for a guy with below average stuff, who has performed miserably, and looks like a big prospect miss - just because they are so cocky they can turn any pitcher who fits their mold around? That’s when I start to feel like they have fallen a little too in love with their “approach”, and have started to eschew any type of scouting that measures prior success. I think it’s becoming an arrogant approach and am quite dismayed this morning. Very dismayed.
  3. I’m going to listen right now. And in advance allow me to express my most heartfelt thanks - I feel as though I hired a private investigator and just received a comprehensive report! This is why I love this website and community so much. Thank you!
  4. I am really surprised and disappointed that Areinamo was not promoted.
  5. Yes, watching Fastball Civale was deeply concerning for me. He froze Judge on a beautiful curveball - and followed that up with three straight fastballs between 90 - 92, the third one right down the pipe. I was dumbstruck at his refusal to mix speeds. Also, each game this series, I was left feeling this is some of the worst work I can remember from William Contreras, regarding pitch framing and game calling. I felt he was reading swings absurdly poorly. This was all from just the eye test though.
  6. That’s also the most he’s favored his curveball over the slider that I can remember, right? In at least a few years.
  7. Hey has anybody noticed - his fastball velo seems well up this spring? I don’t have the exact numbers but I know I’ve seen a good number of 95s when he has pitched.
  8. Great article. He literally looked like a right handed Lyle Overbey in the batters box immediately after his injury. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone change their batting stance so much mid season to accommodate an injury. I’m shocked if people can’t see the clear demarcation before and after his neck injury.
  9. Joel Payamps place on this roster would be secured even if he had options. He is not in the same situation as Nick Mears, who has been a bad pitcher in this league.
  10. Trueblood is coming out with Truecontent at an obscene pace. Absolutely fantastic!!!
  11. That would be ideal; a much better outcome. It doesn’t surprise me at all because we all know the Cardinals org is foul, and several big league players have shared that upon leaving, but has he shared why he was not especially happy?
  12. I guess I just don’t love the redundancy of having Alexander and Thomas in the bullpen. I just don’t think both are needed. Regardless, I think Thomas will be returned in the first month or so or the season. Too much roster inflexibility for a not very talented guy.
  13. Thank you so much! I do recall him now that you’ve reminded me and I think I was lead astray because his baseball reference link goes to young left handed a pitcher!!
  14. I predict him having a far better season than Nick Mears, even though their roles are a little different. Its just that I could see Rodriguez replacing Mears on the roster at some point.
  15. I think people are missing that Ashby is dominant as a reliever. He will now be placed in the bullpen to continue his great work from the end of last year, when Murphy was at times even using him in a fireman type role. This signing improves the rotation AND bullpen.
  16. I think their depth is fine right now and actually better than last year but I would love to have Robertson. It’s always nice to have more than one guy in the pen who has successfully closed games before. Especially since our closer has very little experience doing so. Also, I am pencilling Ashby into the bullpen, because he is not capable of being an average starting pitcher. He is, however, a dominant reliever. Even though I didn’t like the Alexander signing, he will never be a dominant reliever and also doesn’t have the inherent health concerns that come with Ashby as a starter. I think Alexander can serve just fine as the 5th starter until Woodruff is ready, or perhaps when and if Hall can realize his talent and take the ball every fifth day.
  17. Usually I agree with Matthew but very much disagree in this instance. Comparing Black offensively to Turang or Frelick is just not really realistic? Even if some underlying metrics point to him being previously somewhat overhyped as a prospect. Also regarding his cup of coffee in the Bigs, I’m reading into that about as much as I would Spring Training at bats. Beyond the tiny sample size, he got sporadic playing time, and more importantly was making a huge adjustment to not having an automatic strike zone. It’s an adjustment he WILL make, just needs more than 50 ABs to do so. I also feel like several Umps enjoy checking rookies who have naturally better eyes than they do, concerning balls and strikes - he should have had at least 5 more walks in the majors last year than he did.
  18. Yes!!! Yes!! I just completely love the Brewers pitching development department!! Yes!! As far as Henderson, the one cutter he threw looked great and got the weak pop up he was looking for. His slider looked like he had very little control over it, but had much more impressive sharp downer break than I was expecting. Very pleased. Now for his velocity - I’m happy to see it, but I presumed it was just because he was pitching short relief instead of his normal starting situation. As a starter I expect him to be 91-94, as a reliever I expect 93-96. Doesn’t that sound about right?
  19. Now that Brother Canha has returned for his second ride I believe Margot will not factor into the Brewers’ season.
  20. I am sorry, but Black could not be more dissimilar to Wiemer. Wiemer is a toolsy player with as bad of a hit tool as possible. Black’s hit tool is what has carried him as a top 100 prospect. There is nothing to indicate Black is a below average hitter…??
  21. Very nice! A match made in heaven. Very good writing, also. All this said, some instinct tells me they are going to talk Nestor into using his change a little more this year, specifically against righties of course. And I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he adds a MPH to his fastball average.
  22. I think Ortiz is going to be a very nice player both offensively and defensively. I think his offense is great, as he was showing last year before his neck injury. I think they erred in rushing him back before the Allstar break and not resting him more. His neck injury so obviously impacted him, it was absurd. In fact, at one point he almost out of nowhere employed a Lyle Overbay-esque open batting stance, because his neck was bothering him so much. I think he can be a 3.5 to 4 WAR player this year, health permitting. As an aside, it surprises me that anyone still takes Oliver Dunn seriously in any capacity. He is not a big league player. His strikeout rate at AA as a player in his mid-twenties conveys that, as does his putrid play in the majors last year. Hopefully he will be off the 40 man soon.
