  1. I think people are missing that Ashby is dominant as a reliever. He will now be placed in the bullpen to continue his great work from the end of last year, when Murphy was at times even using him in a fireman type role. This signing improves the rotation AND bullpen.
  2. I think their depth is fine right now and actually better than last year but I would love to have Robertson. It’s always nice to have more than one guy in the pen who has successfully closed games before. Especially since our closer has very little experience doing so. Also, I am pencilling Ashby into the bullpen, because he is not capable of being an average starting pitcher. He is, however, a dominant reliever. Even though I didn’t like the Alexander signing, he will never be a dominant reliever and also doesn’t have the inherent health concerns that come with Ashby as a starter. I think Alexander can serve just fine as the 5th starter until Woodruff is ready, or perhaps when and if Hall can realize his talent and take the ball every fifth day.
  3. Usually I agree with Matthew but very much disagree in this instance. Comparing Black offensively to Turang or Frelick is just not really realistic? Even if some underlying metrics point to him being previously somewhat overhyped as a prospect. Also regarding his cup of coffee in the Bigs, I’m reading into that about as much as I would Spring Training at bats. Beyond the tiny sample size, he got sporadic playing time, and more importantly was making a huge adjustment to not having an automatic strike zone. It’s an adjustment he WILL make, just needs more than 50 ABs to do so. I also feel like several Umps enjoy checking rookies who have naturally better eyes than they do, concerning balls and strikes - he should have had at least 5 more walks in the majors last year than he did.
  4. Yes!!! Yes!! I just completely love the Brewers pitching development department!! Yes!! As far as Henderson, the one cutter he threw looked great and got the weak pop up he was looking for. His slider looked like he had very little control over it, but had much more impressive sharp downer break than I was expecting. Very pleased. Now for his velocity - I’m happy to see it, but I presumed it was just because he was pitching short relief instead of his normal starting situation. As a starter I expect him to be 91-94, as a reliever I expect 93-96. Doesn’t that sound about right?
  5. Now that Brother Canha has returned for his second ride I believe Margot will not factor into the Brewers’ season.
  6. I am sorry, but Black could not be more dissimilar to Wiemer. Wiemer is a toolsy player with as bad of a hit tool as possible. Black’s hit tool is what has carried him as a top 100 prospect. There is nothing to indicate Black is a below average hitter…??
  7. Very nice! A match made in heaven. Very good writing, also. All this said, some instinct tells me they are going to talk Nestor into using his change a little more this year, specifically against righties of course. And I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he adds a MPH to his fastball average.
  8. I think Ortiz is going to be a very nice player both offensively and defensively. I think his offense is great, as he was showing last year before his neck injury. I think they erred in rushing him back before the Allstar break and not resting him more. His neck injury so obviously impacted him, it was absurd. In fact, at one point he almost out of nowhere employed a Lyle Overbay-esque open batting stance, because his neck was bothering him so much. I think he can be a 3.5 to 4 WAR player this year, health permitting. As an aside, it surprises me that anyone still takes Oliver Dunn seriously in any capacity. He is not a big league player. His strikeout rate at AA as a player in his mid-twenties conveys that, as does his putrid play in the majors last year. Hopefully he will be off the 40 man soon.
  9. He was already young for his league. He’ll be pitching A+ for his age 20 season now, even if he starts at rookie ball or single A to began his rehab. He will have plenty of time on his side to develop. At this point TJ is almost like a right of passage these young pitchers have to get out of their way.
  10. Even if he doesn’t have a great arm, the fact that he was behind the plate means he should have enough arm strength to also play 3rd.
  11. I remember really feeling for this guy. It seemed like he must have struggled with his mental health a lot especially that second year. Between getting STUNG!?! Having sleep issues and “personal issues”, he couldn’t catch a break. I could never really find out anything behind the scenes either. But man he could throw some heat from the left side especially at a time when it wasn’t all that common.
  12. Middleton had become one of the least reliable players in the sport. I am his biggest fan, but he CAN’T play regular minutes. I’ve never been a Kuzma fan, but a first option on a bad team is always inefficient. How efficient would Khash or Bobby look if they were the first option on the Wizards? Kuzma waived his trade kicker to come to Milwaukee. Sounds like he wants to win. He’s not gonna come to a team full of vets with a veteran coach and chuck up terrible shots. This trade makes them better this year because it gives them a 3rd option who can actually suit up and play 30 minutes who also happens to be a great transition player. But more importantly, this gets them out of cap hell!!! Kuzma has one of the most team friendly contracts in the league. I think Horst did the best with this terrible CBA he was dealt.
  13. Great write up. Good dive in. I will say, I don’t think Payamps ever came close to being put on waivers. I think he is and has been one of the most valued members of their bullpen and I expect big things out of him this year, including improvement of his changeup. I think the Brewers brass really appreciate having a veteran who can take the ball whenever they need him and they know exactly what to expect out of him.
  14. Beautiful Matt. And your sentiment does NOT have the bad breath of priests.
  15. Although no one loves parting with prospects, I feel like the Brewers have so much depth on the farm to trade from. I would like to see them put together a solid package for some controllable big league talent. They could do that 3 times over and still have one of the best farms in ball.
  16. Love the article and everything I’m reading in it! Puts a smile on my face :) As a side note it is interesting to me that they are perceived as being one of the best at developing hitting. That is something that I in fact feel they have struggled with. I do think they are turning a corner here with Jackson leading the way, but aside from him I think they’re gonna have to wait a while before they should be considered good at developing the hitting side of things. They’re pretty much elite at developing everything else.
  17. Ahh thank you. Makes a little more sense. Still, surprised to see that big of a disparity between the two WARs. Is that bigger than usual?
  18. Yeah I’d love to know what they’re basing cutting Brice Turang’s WAR in half on. Do they think he’ll stop playing defense and running the bases?
  19. Good write up! I see a lot of people feeling quite sanguine on Mears, I think he sucks and has a natural losers mentality. I don’t mean to sound harsh, I just don’t think he has any moxie. I think quad A guys like Mears and the oft lionized Connor Thomas will be toast by mid May, making room for guys like Yoho and perhaps even the Miz.
  20. Hell come to think of it, I think they should sign Wade to be a player/coach. He could have some duties akin to a part time assistant pitching coach, kinda like they had Jason Lane do a couple years back. Lane was half pitching coach/half hitting coach when he started.
