  1. I was looking at Schoop and Villar and there are some definite parallels between the two. Both can play the MI positions although you probably don't want to run them out as your SS every day. Both appear to have caught lightning in a bottle in their age 25 season. Both are on their 3rd major league team. Shoop has a career OPS+ of 98, VIillar's is 93. Neither appear to perform very well when the spotlight is on them.
  2. I'm a little surprised X-man is gone. I guess this means the Brewers are getting out of the LOOGY business. Bullpen needs guys that can get out lefties and righties and preferably can go more than one inning.
  3. They should love Villar. He saved them $30M-$40M easily.
  4. Agreed, not interested at all at that price. That will be a nice move for the Braves. Their best bats are LH for the most part. If Donaldson has a big year, they could be a serious contender with a front side lineup of Acuna, Albies, Freeman, Donaldson, Markakis. Markakis is a free agent isn't he? Still not a bad lineup even without him.
  5. It would seem to be an odd career move for Czaban I guess. He already has a local radio show in a larger market, and he's done national radio shows as well. Now he's going to start a local radio show in a smaller market? Seems like a very odd move. Whatever he is planning to do I hope it falls through because the new sports guy on Bob and Brian stinks. Maybe Czaban can come back like the prodigal son.
  6. That would be weird. Olson just left ESPN 540 for the Big 920. Czaban is entertaining but his knowledge of WI sports outside the Packers is thimble-sized.
  7. That was a pretty easy choice. Assuming average players everywhere you expect to score at least 1 run 61.5% of the time with a runner and 2nd and no outs. That goes up to 66% with runner at 3rd and 1 out. So assuming the bunt is successful you gain 4.5%. Now you take into account that Pina is a very slow runner and that margin goes down. Take into account that Arcia doesn't bunt very often and the successful odds are way under 100%. Then add in a high K guy coming up to bat against a high K pitcher which lowers the odds even more. There is almost no way him bunting in that situation is a net positive. If it were say Broxton on 2nd and Cain was up next it makes total sense. Counterpoint. Arcia is apparently a very good bunter per BA. 30 seconds in. Should have been in the WS.
  8. It is a rational explanation, but definitely not the only one. Many other possibilities have been mentioned in the thread, most of which are equally rational. I wanted to respond to this too. The excerpt about Counsell from the book "The Chicken Runs at Midnight" was posted here, but I'm going to post it again. I suggest anyone who thinks CC is difficult to work for should read it and then explain how CC transformed from a wonderful guy to some power mad tyrant driving assistant coaches to other organizations. Sorry, I'm not buying it. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24852392/chicken-runs-midnight
  9. I wonder if the fans are overrating DJ and the front office knows better. The team era was 5th in the majors, but FIP was 13th. Perhaps the thinking is that the success of the pitching staff had more to do with the defense than DJ.
  10. And he's not wrong to a certain extent. Dodgers did have 2-3 bloopers/dribblers that helped the score the runs. The bigger issue was the two walks in the 7th thought. Those were self inflicted wounds especially the one to Barnes.
  11. You've never heard of anyone losing a business due to the estate tax? I'm certainly not saying it's the norm, but it is certainly not unheard of. Of course by "losing it," we're talking about having to sell in order to cover it in this context. With regard to gifting it, I know people with those types of means are far more adept at working around the tax laws, but I think you can only "gift" like 13K a year now to your kids tax free. If you can point me to a story of someone losing the business they inherited please do so.
  12. Oh boy let's talk estate tax. So Mark A is already employing an Estate tax strategy by not owning 100% of the Brewers. The value of the estate gets a fairly significant discount on the overall value of any businesses that are not 100% owned. Given Mark A's wealth before he acquired the Brewers I'm certain he already has life insurance policies that will cover significant portions of any estate tax liabilities he has. Whole life insurance policies are great ways to transfer wealth for several reasons but mainly because the proceeds of a life insurance policy are not taxable to the heirs. And finally I don't follow estate taxation that closely, but I have never heard of a business ever being sold due to the estate tax. For the simple reason that if a business is valuable enough to be subject to the estate tax it most certainly could qualify for a loan to cover any estate tax due on it. But good stuff. Hope we don't have to talk about this for 30 years. Maybe Tom H. can ask Mark A about his estate planning in the offseason.
  13. He was a Mets fan growing up, so just like CC's dream job is to manage the Brewers, DS' dream job is probably to run the Mets. That job is available. Would he be interested? I would think so but maybe not now. Even though this rebuild went incredibly quick the next rebuild he steps into probably won't. After all the Marlins are out of All-Star/MVP caliber OFs to trade. The mets will probably always underperform as long as the Wilpon's are the owners. Not really worried for now. But yeah, everyone's going to have to get used to DS' name being associated with pretty much every GM job that opens up. I am perfectly happy to make that trade off to see the Brewer in the NLCS and hopefully the World Series.
  14. Anderson for 2 and when his spot comes up in the lineup you PH for him. Then Woodruff for 2 and when his spot in the lineup comes up you PH for him. Then Peralta for 2 and when his spot in the lineup comes up you PH for him. Then the rest of the bullpen takes it the rest of the way. If we have a lead after 4 1/2 I might even skip Peralta and go straight to Hader, Knebel, Soria, JJ for the last 5 innings.
  15. Winning one of the next two would be huge because it would give us the season series and the tie breaker for hosting the wild card game between us and the cards.
  16. I split a full season ticket package of 4 seats with 3 friends. We sell opening day and most cubs games to help pay for the tickets, but today three of us decided to go seeing as this is the tenderloin of the playoff chase. We were still able to sell the single seat for $50. So going to the game and not selling the tickets cost us $150 at least but I can tell you that the schadenfreude was well worth it today.
  17. The truth: Brewers have better fans than you -- and Cole Hamels -- think http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24570766/mlb-milwaukee-brewers-fans-better-think
  18. If Knebel coughs up the lead is that a blown save even if Anderson isn't eligible for the win?
  19. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/downloads/mlb_social_media_policy.pdf I wonder if he will be suspended for this. Pablo Sandoval was suspended for one game a few years ago with the Red Sox for being on Social Media during a game, which is a no-no. Interesting that this policy was put in place in 2012 while Hader's tweets were made back in 2011. Amateur and professional lawyers and loophole finders make your case.
  20. I would have to assume that any employer who forcibly “checks, monitors, and clears” their employees social media is in violation of a ton of privacy laws and would face some pretty serious First Amendment challenges in court. That being said he obviously should have never posted this/voluntarily erased these himself. My goodness do they not teach civics in high school anymore? First amendment has to do with government censorship of speech. It has nothing to do with conduct between private individuals and companies. You say something stupid on social media your employer can most certainly fire you for it(unless on the off chance you work for the government, then it's a little more of an issue).
  21. I think you are reading WAY too much into it. On the highlights I saw Keon did the give me some love move after his rbi single in the second. Don’t think it’s a problem.
  22. There isn't going to be a vogt type pickup this year. Too many catchers are injured already. Mets lost both their starting catchers, twins lost Castro for the year. Wieters had surgery on his hammy and is going to be out for at least 6 weeks. Lots of teams are looking for a veteran catcher. I seriously doubt Bandy would make it through waivers unclaimed.
