  1. Hamilton played 90 games for Cincy last year, though.
  2. I'm not overly concerned, but the point is well taken. I also will wonder about their collective psyche a tiny bit if they continue to pound on the Nats and Pirates of the world but get smoked by the Cubs and Mets in these "potential playoff preview" games. Really, though, I don't think it's a huge deal -- you're bound to have a couple of hiccups along the way....
  3. In retrospect, yes. I'm just pointing out that it wasn't necessarily clear, at that moment, that he would have gotten the runner at first -- at least from CC's own perspective. This underscores the problem with going semi-Zapruder with the replay, several days after the fact. I can understand the reluctance to change the call based on speculation that he probably would have gotten the runner at first if he had successfully made a great play. A parallel might be a play deep in the hole at shortstop. Let's say JJ ranges far to his backhand and fields a ball in short left. JJ has a great arm, and the runner is slow, so it's possible that he can throw the guy out, but he bobbles and doesn't even make a throw. I think that's generally scored a hit -- even though JJ might very well throw the guy out if he doesn't bobble. (Again, I'm not agreeing with this POV, but I can see the merit in it.)
  4. I agree that it probably was an error rather than a hit, but I wonder how we'd be arguing if the shoe were on the other foot and the play in question involved, say, Braun extending a hitting streak to 45 games or something. Non-routine plays are always a gray area for the official scorer, especially on that part of the field. I think we've all seen botched bare-hand pick-ups by the 3B that have been called hits -- without much attention paid to where the runner was on the baseline. Also, it seems that CC himself knew the play at 1B was going to be close -- that's why he rushed himself and fumbled the ball. (Again, I'm not arguing that it was the right call.)
  5. I like the line about one guy being forced to endure all of the indignities of minor league ball, including wearing "camo jerseys." Yeah, you'd never see that at the ML level ....
  6. Like FTJ, I remembered because it was just so profoundly dumb.
  7. Speaking of Food Fight . . . has anyone been to Monty's Blue Plate lately? I recently ate there on four straight Thursdays (my son had soccer practice on the East side) and I was totally underwhelmed by the food and the service. I used to live nearby and remember absolutely loving it.
  8. Against Cubs, July 30. Parra battting in fifth, Kendall on first. Parra missed, Kendall thrown out easily.
  9. I'm not sure why you would factor in team performance for an individual award. It seems unfair to penalize Position Player A in the MVP balloting because, say, his team's bullpen blew a million saves, or its starting rotation got hammered by injuries.
  10. Brewers can really directly mess up the Cards, Mets, and Phillies with these head-to-head games. Let's hope the trend continues from last night...
  11. Of course he's doing better against them now! They no longer feature the scrappy hustler David Eckstein!!!
  12. Does this not prove the worthlessness of W-L record? A 5-14 record with an above average ERA.I'm not arguing that W/L and ERA are be-all, end-all stats (we all know the drawbacks), but I think they might indicate that he hasn't pitched especially against the Cards in his career. (His lifetime ERA is 3.75)
  13. Yes, Eric Byrnes -- annoying, un-funny, overpaid, and dumb. (You come off the DL for a double hammy strain, and you immediately incur a full tear -- while trying to steal third base.)
  14. What's up with Benny and the Cards? 5-14 and 4.20 ERA lifetime.
  15. The Phillies have 11 games against the Nats and Braves, but the rest are against the Mets, Cubs, Fish, and Brewers. The Mets' schedule looks pretty similar. I just don't see either one of them going 20-10-ish or better (especially the Mets, with their bullpen woes). Of the four teams legitimately vying for the WC, the Brewers really seem to have the easiest schedule -- 16 games against the Pirates, Reds, and Padres. If the goal is, say, 17 more wins, the team can get the bulk of them right there.
  16. The Cards' schedule: 2 games/home v. Brewers 3 games/road v. Astros 3 games/road v. D'backs 3 games/home v. Marlins 3 games/home v. Cubs 3 games/road v. Pirates 3 games/road v. Reds 3 games/road v. Cubs 4 games/home v. D'backs 3 games/home v. Reds So they have 15 games left against teams that currently are in playoff position (D'backs, Cubs, Brewers), 9 games against pretty bad teams (Pirates and Reds), and 6 games against competent-but-not-great teams (Marlins and Astros). I just don't see them going significantly over .500 (20-10 or something) for that stretch. So, really, the Brewers might just have to play .500 ball the rest of the way? I like the chances of that happening.
  17. Add him to my list, too, after yesterday's run-down fiasco. That's just not the way to play the game.
  18. Dream Team (even though it had Laettner, who I always hated).
  19. Wow, I'd didn't realize that Hunter Pence was so widely reviled. He's approaching Zambrano territory here, and that's saying something....
  20. I think I fall into the non-sprinting-to-first-on-a-walk camp. I think it's an attention-getter; the batter seems to be saying, "Hey, everyone, look at me hustle!" (That was Rose's M.O., clearly.)
  21. Clemens. Even before the steroid flap, I thought he was a total jerk and a liar.
  22. Wheeling Jesuit is not a seminary but a Jesuit University of higher education like Marquette, Georgetown, Boston College, Gonzaga, Santa Clara, St. Louis, ect. Yeah, I know that -- I should have put it in blue.
  23. I'd feel better about giving Rickie more time if he had shown significant development over the past few years. But he's actually regressed this year in terms of BA, OBP, and SLG, and his defense is still pretty bad. He's going to turn 26 next month, and he's in his fourth season in the bigs. Is he going to suddenly put it together somehow? I suppose that's the big question.
  24. I will go out on a limb here and say that, unless you wanted to become a seaman or a priest, Rutgers (#469) probably is better than California Maritime Academy (#399) or Wheeling Jesuit University (#437).
  25. Benny's ERA by month (for career): April/March (240 IP): 3.98 ERA May (241 IP): 3.29 ERA June (261 IP): 3.38 ERA July (239 IP): 3.87 ERA August (222 IP): 4.54 ERA Sept./Oct. (194 IP): 3.48 ERA
