  1. Is there a list someplace (another thread?) of DM's meaningful GM moves over the past few years? I just keep remembering the cash-for-clunker, ex-Ranger retread deals, and that's probably not fair in terms of assessing his overall performance.
  2. What's the team's record in Looper's starts? How many runs do the Brewers score on average in his starts? Unless you think a SP has control over how the offense performs on days that he pitches, team record on days that he starts isn't all that relevant. You're acting like I'm not even permitted to ask this kind of question.
  3. Baseball aside, I wish him a speedy recovery.
  4. What's the team's record in Looper's starts?
  5. It's depressing to consider the possibility (remote though it might be) of him wearing a Brewer uniform this year. If that happens, I might have to take a little respite from watching games on TV.
  6. "Recently released by the Nationals" = all you need to know.
  7. I guess my criticisms of the plan would be: 1.) How would he think that the initial rotation would eat up most of the starts/innings for the season? Coming into the season, Gallardo had a total of 21 ML starts and 135 innings; Bush had been shaky enough at one point last season to have been shipped to AAA (although he did recover well subsequently); Parra had been mediocre in 166 IP last year; Looper had been average; and Suppan had been aging and just not very good. I don't know how he could look at that picture and feel basically confident -- especially since there was zero depth at AAA. 2.) DM has been around long enough to know that the acquisition of CC last year -- and his performace in Milwaukee -- was pretty much an aberration. It wasn't going to happen again -- if only because teams with deeper pockets and more prospects to deal would have sought to replicate his success from last year. Might he have realistically expected to pick up a decent 3-4 starter, like Bannister from KC? Sure. But that's about it. Having said that, I still don't think DM should be fired, or tarred and feathered, or whatever. I think he made some disastrous non-decisions about the pitching staff that will impact the team in '09 and beyond, but his overall record in Milwaukee is still commendable.
  8. FWIW, Vargas has pitched 11 innings of mop up this year. Five of his appearances were in blowouts: Dodger wins of 8-0, 11-2, and 12-3; and Dodger losses of 1-8 and 0-10.
  9. Before the signing of Looper, I can remember having an extended discussion here about the quality/durability of the rotation as it then stood (Gallardo, Manny, Bush, Suppan, and maybe McClung or Villy). I, for one, refused to believe that all five of those guys were going to come close to making 30+ starts each -- it seemed totally implausible. The acquisition of Looper mitigated that problem somewhat, but, even then, you were were looking at (roughly) the five above + Looper each having to make 25 starts each -- which, at least to me, still seemed implausible way back in April. The fact that the team is now scrambling to grapple with this rotation depth problem (in the persons of Mike Burns and Vargas) frustrates me because it was foreseeable before the season even began.
  10. If you're acknowledging that your team can't win this year, shouldn't you make moves that will help next year, and beyond?
  11. I wonder if Ruben Quevedo has any gas left in the tank.
  12. I hadn't heard about Detroit being in the mix for Washburn; just goes to show how little we really know about these things before they actually happen.
  13. And the obligatory disclaimer: "The lawyers spoke anonymously because the testing information is under seal by a court order. The lawyers did not identify which drugs were detected."
  14. I feel the same way. It was okay at first, but now it's just getting annoying.Barely tolerable the first time around; annoying thereafter.
  15. One would think the Brewers could score some runs off this dude....
  16. I thought that they might very well just go ahead and give Pujols the award at the All-Star game. They did pretty much everything else for the guy, save slaughter a fatted calf.
  17. I don't know much about Katin, but I'm ok with the overall premise here, especially as it relates to Gamel.
  18. Yeah, the adherence to conventional wisdom (the starter must stay in until he gets shelled) frustrates me in this context, too. I think trying to go something like 3-3-3 with some combination of Villy, Dillard, etc., might actually work out pretty well, but it will never happen.
  19. As Hawing pointed out before the series started, the Nats had won a total of 10 -- count 'em, 10 -- road games before this series.
  20. Per Witrado: "We just got word between innings that Jeff Suppan has a left oblique strain, revealed by a MRI today. He will be re-evaluated on Thursday by team physician William Raasch. If he goes down for a while, kiss the season goodbye. I know he hasn't been great, but at least he's a body. With as many holes as this rotation already has, they can't even afford to lose a bad pitcher."
  21. I guess I am resisting the notion that it's a binary "buy" or "sell" proposition. Any transaction would involve both. Also, I'm not entirely convinced that dealing one player actually amounts to "giving up" on a season. Teams lose individual players all the time without seeing their collective seasons completely fall apart. (A thorough fire sale is another matter entirely.) I understand that there is a PR dimension to this, but I don't think that fear of possible short-term backlash should deter the team from making smart, opportunistic moves that will help the team over the long haul.
  22. FWIW, this was at the end of TH's latest blog posting: "I have heard no trade rumors over the last 24 hours. Doug Melvin is bunkered in with his staff and not returning phone calls. They're probably trying to figure out what makes sense at this point with the team foundering so badly."
  23. This is what frightens me about '10 and '11. I think the lineup will work itself out, generally, without too many dramatic moves. But where is the pitching going to come from?
  24. However it happens, I just feel as though the team is going to need some serious overhauling for '10. I don't think that nibbling around the edges with a few reclamation projects is going to do the trick. If selling now can put the team in position for '10 (or even '11), then I'm for it, if only because the '09 is looking pretty grim.
