  1. Yeah, that win today . . . yikes. They do seem to have some serious mojo. But it's not even June yet, for crying out loud -- still many, many games to be played.
  2. The inability to sweep is really weird. Not that I am complaining about taking 2 out of 3, but it does seem like the team lets up, somehow.
  3. How can you crop out 3TO!?!?
  4. It pains me to note this, but, with their win over the Rockies last night, the Cubs have the best record in MLB now at 33-21. Let's hope it's downhill from here for them....
  5. Baseball Almanac came up with a graph with all MLB player weights from 1876 to 2007. Most players (about 9,000) were in the 170-200 lb. range. I was especially interested to see the heavy end of the spectrum. There were: -- sixty-three 240-249 pound players -- twenty-six 250-259 pound players -- seven 260-269 pound players -- five 270-279 pound players -- one 295 pound player -- one 315 pound player I wouldn't take these numbers as Gospel truth, but they suggest that Prince ranks among the heaviest MLB players ever. That can't be good.
  6. Can anyone find ready photographic evidence (before v. after) of the purported . . . blimping?
  7. Sidestepping the ever-fascinating vegetarian topic for just one second, I thought I would take a look at Prince's HR totals by the 14 calendar months of his big league career (excluding his call-up in late '05): 2006: 5, 4, 7, 3, 5, 4 2007: 6, 13, 8, 3, 9, 11 2008: 4, 2 (thru today) It's interesting to line them up and look for the mode (4) and the median (5): 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13
  8. You would think that a Cub or ChiSox player would step into the breach and spring for the licensed uni's. But, wait -- they probably don't make enough to help. Never mind....
  9. Actually, my least favorite is the guy on "Baseball Tonight" who always refers to the Red Sox as "The Nation."
  10. This is interesting. I wonder about the whole "and the operator believes the signal is vehicle actuated" part, though. What % of intersections are like this?
  11. 3TO. Does anyone remember the K-Swiss commercial that Kapler did? My college girlfriend wore K-Swiss sneakers. So there you go.
  12. I actually kind of like Steven A. His whole worked-up Gospel-preacher thing is kind of entertaining. (But, having said that, I can totally understand why he's not everyone's cup of tea.) About Berman: a million years ago, I represented my alma mater in the "Superbowl of Sports Trivia" show. (Reruns of this abomination occasionally still run on ESPN Classic.) Berman was the host, and he was pretty cool to us. When he found out that I was from Baltimore, he told a hilarious story about dating someone frigid from Towson, which is near where I grew up. So, after that, he pretty much received a lifetime pass from me.
  13. We have always been at war with Eastasia If I ever form a band and cut a record, this will be the title.
  14. It's probably not a huge deal, one way or the other. Ned's explanation was convoluted, though. When he batted Kendall 9th, he said it would provide an extra few runs (by avoiding DP's, etc.). But last week he said that batting him 8th would yield extra runs, too. So I don't quite understand how both of those things can be simultaneously true.
  15. I am not sure if you meant that to be in blue or not. But Wisconsin DOT says: "Bicycles are considered 'vehicles' on Wisconsin roadways. That means bicyclists must obey the rules of the road like any other vehicle and must be treated as equal users by all other vehicles . . . A bicycle is a legal vehicle whose operator is required to follow all traffic laws. This means stopping for stop signs and red lights if traveling in the street and riding on the same side of the road as other traffic that is going in the same direction."
  16. I stand corrected. (It's hilarious to me that you got stopped there for following the law.)
  17. Case in point: the bottom (campus end) of State St. in Madison, where it intersects with Lake St. It's a bit downhill there, and bikes never, ever, ever stop, despite the stop sign. If you're crossing Lake St. there, you have to look up and make sure that a bike isn't hurtling through the intersection. (However, the current construction has temporarily alleviated this problem.) My pet peeve is being stopped at an intersection and waiting to make a right-hand turn when the foot traffic clears. In Madison, bikes will squeeze between you and the curb (or fly through on the sidewalk) going straight, without thinking twice about how unbelievably dangerous it is. So, basically, you have to turn around and look backward, just to make sure. It's even bad on the bike paths, when it's purely bike v. bike.
  18. Let me preface this by saying that I ride my bike 13 miles round-trip pretty much every day, and that I completely understand how careless/dangerous/outright stupid automobile drivers sometimes can be when they encounter bicycles on our roadways. Nonetheless, I am absolutely dumbfounded by how reckless bicyclists are here in Madison. They fly through stop signs, weave in and out of traffic, fly through the sidewalks, and generally cause havoc everywhere. And not only that -- they become absolutely irate at you when you don't slam on the brakes quickly enough to yield to them. It's a little unreal sometimes. Is it me, or is this getting worse?
  19. How about Prince Fielder with only 2 HR in May -- 11 fewer than he had in May of last year, and on track to be his worst HR month since becoming a regular. (Of course, there are still a few days left in May -- perhaps he could jack a few against the Braves . . .)
  20. I teach, and every semester, without fail, students handing in papers will botch the spelling of my name, or transpose my first and last names. I can understand a typo or two; it just happens. But this is just crazy....
  21. Oh, if only I lived in my old neighborhood, near Vilas Zoo -- you'll go zooming right past there.
  22. I would be inclined to give Weaver a try, but he hasn't exactly been lights-out down in the Music City. Either way, the back end of the rotation is looking increasingly funky.
  23. Ah, had the team only had remained in the AL, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
  24. And, perhaps most importantly, he's a Ranger. This should be a no-brainer for DM.
