  1. Go ahead and do that. In the meantime, I and I assume a few others will probably continue to speculate...kinda what the boards are all about.
  2. I think there may be more to this than people are willing to recognize. This is more of a Doug Melvin issue than a Ned Yost issue. Would people's preference really be that he only use 11 of 12 pitchers? Would overworking those guys really be a better alternative? Perhaps last night, but talk to me again in August and September. Now, this strikes me more as a Lou Piniella type of move than something Ned would do, but perhaps sending him out there is also in some ways an attempt to get Doug Melvins's attention and tell him to get this guy out of here and bring in someone who might be able to get an out. People can call it loyalty to a player, and I will agree...Its loyalty to Villanueva, Torres, Shouse, Riskie...Not being willing to burn those guys out in the first half because the GM can't find enough competent guys to put in that bullpen. As for a grade...B. This team could have folded up in the first month or two when things weren't going well, and they did just the opposite, despite Neds' failures to hold people accountable, or to use his etiquette school training during post-games.
  3. Well I suppose it depends on what makes up that 91.6. If that consists of 2 starts and one was 93 and one was 89, that would be a pretty big deal. I don't no that is is or is not the case, but most of the comments refer only to his last start.
  4. If he is referring to the number of different injuries, he's absolutely correct. If he is talking about IP, he has no idea what he's talking about.
  5. Due to All Star appearances, I actually expect Sabathia and Harden to start out the second half, which would make that the match-up on the 28th as well. I would assume Sheets and Zambrano after that, followed by Parra and Lilly, and then Suppan and Dempster. Just a guess on my part.
  6. While I am not necessarily comfortable with Torres as the permanent solution at closer this year, at this point I don't necessarily care who it is so long as he is getting the job done. But, is Gagne more or less the wild card where the Brewers are concerned right now? Certainly it appears that the 5-6 weeks off did him some good. Before the season started he was an obvious question mark, with the answer determining whether that bullpen was good or not so good. I'd still like to see them add a proven guy, but in the event that doesn't happen, if Gagne can pitch well, do they really need to, or does he kind of become that guy? Ideally, you want both, but that can be tough. He should have 4-5 more appearances before the deadline, so at what point do you say that the price for another releiver may be too high, and you just go replace Mota with McClung, Bush, etc?
  7. Now this I like to hear (From Buster Olney), and makes me feel much better about this deal... Cubs general manager Jim Hendry checked in from time to time throughout June with Oakland general manager Billy Beane about the availability of Rich Harden, and their conversations traveled down the same path: Yes, Harden was available, but only at the right price, and that price would include right-handed pitcher Sean Gallagher. And Hendry indicated, repeatedly, that Gallagher wasn't available. On Sunday evening -- the same night when word broke that the Brewers had worked out a deal for CC Sabathia -- Hendry indicated to Beane for the first time that he would make Gallagher available in a Harden deal... Harden to Cubs If you can force another GM into doing something he didn't want to do, I don't care how good their deal looks, that's a good thing.
  8. This trade is obviously about winning in the playoffs, not necessarily getting there for the Cubs. I think most would a gree, a lot has to go wrong for them not to make it there. That said, the Cubs still have some potential land mines ahead of them where there rotation is concerned. Harden, Dempster, and Marquis have to all be considered potential question marks in the second half. Harden obviously with the history of injury. Dempster has obviously been a starter, but has not pitched anywhere near this many innings since 2002. We all know how Marquis generally performs in the second half. There is probably a borrowed time comment relative to Kerry Wood that could be made here as well. A three man rotation of Zambrano, Harden, and Lilly makes them awfully tough in October though.
  9. It has never dawned on me until this moment that Rich Harden's name could be modified slightly to refer to some sort of topical ointment you might find in the back of a magazine for $19.99. Should finally provide the Wrigley Field 20-somethings with some upgrade material to the 'We Got Wood' T-shirts.
  10. If the Sabathia trade proved anything, its that the Seligs are gone. I have no reason not to take him on his workd on this - whether he is talking straight total revenues minus total expenses or something else, whatever the actual meaning of that may be, I assume there is some truth to it.
  11. That is my attitude as well. On the surface Beane got taken, and this certainly lets a little air out of my balloon, but Billy Beane does not generally get taken. As a GM, when you pick up the phone and he's on the other end, you should generally hang up. We'll have to see what happens.
  12. Supposedly SF and the White Sox are doing a little joint marketing to double their efforts and get Sox fans to vote for Rowand when they vote for Dye vice versa.
  13. I hope he doesn't participate. If he does. I'll have to watch. If I have to watch, I'll be subjected to Chris Berman, which is something I try to avoid at all costs.
  14. Definitely take the division. Should translate into home field for the NLCS as well.
  15. We are veering off course here, but I have maintaned all year that Stoney's new job with the White Sox has severely harmed his abilities as an analyst. He seems to have really lost touch with the rest of the league. From a listener's perspective, its a real shame too, because the last couple years, he was easily one of the best. That JJ Hardy thing is really bad.
  16. I think that remains an open question. The A's are sort of in no man's land right now, but they have a couple weeks to figure things out.
  17. I suspect it could be a real injury. I just suspect it is not a real serious injury. Probably something he could easily pitch through that may or may not be seriously affecting his effectiveness, but provides a great opportunity to give him 2-3 weeks off.
  18. Suckitude - See WebMD for more info. Should be back shortly after the All Star break. This sounds like a pretty good outcome. We'll need him to pitch well in a few weeks.
  19. Aside from the fact that dealing with Billy Bean is something that should generaly be avoided, I'm not sure I would call that desperate. The Cubs needed to add a pitcher before this deal every bit as much as they do now. Harden seems to make sense. When healthy he is a bad man, and the health issues may make him more attainable than a Burnett or the like. Perhaps a risk worth taking for the Cubs.
