  1. This is raising all sorts of red flags fro me. I'm not sure what they are exactly, but I just have a bad feeling about this.
  2. When I think back to the things I thought they absolutely needed to do, improve teh defense absolutely topped the list. With the Cameron, Braun, Hall situation, along with replacing Estrada with Kendall, he absolutely did that. On that fact alone, the off-season was a success. Improving the bullpen was next on the list, and while there are still obvious question marks, there are a lot of guys, and many potentially good answers. Time will tell, but I am optimistic that the bullpen will be a success as well. I know we have pitching depth, but the final thing I would have liked to see was some additional veteran protection for Sheets to further strengthen the rotation. I also understand SP is very expensive, and this was not a very realistic option, so I can't hold this against him. Overall, a very good off season.
  3. It'll be Munson, and look for Rivera to be traded along with a pitcher at the end of Spring.
  4. First, I think this in much ado about nothing, and if nothing else, the start of a long negotiation through the media. If DM says he didn't say anything to them about it. I take him at his word. Personally, I think Prince should be getting paid more, but this is the one area of the CBA where the teams actually have a bit of an advantage, and its very simple, if you want more money, it is gonna cost you more years. I assure you the Brewers would be more than happy to give you 4 year $15 million dollar contract right now. Would you like them to draw up the paperwork? Since Prince and his DBag agent made it clear they really aren't into that right now, take what they systems is required to pay you and go play.
  5. That's great. If he blows none, it will be an unbelievable season. What are you talking about?
  6. The easy answer is Sheets, but the better answer is probably Capuano. If Sheets can have the excat same year he had last year, and Capuano has a year like he had in '06, we'll be better. If Sheets can just make even a couple more starts, and Capuano has a year like he had in '06, we'll win the division. All of that assumes of course that everyone else does about what is expected. Sheets will always be a key, but the best thing that could happen for the Brewers would be Cappy pitching well and forcing his way into the rotation (Not just being put into the rotation because he's left handed).... Sheets Gallardo Suppan Villenueva Capuano With Vargas, Bush, Para all waiting in the wings, that's tough.
  7. Are those supposed to be actual projections based on statistical data/analysis, or are they just some guy's guesses?
  8. How lame! I know the significance of this is nil, but it actually makes me less excited about the Brewers. I just hope he does not step foot in Miller Park this year. If he does, it means we are in for one disappointing year.
  9. Gee, charging more for something in high demand. How dare they?
  10. I understand the thinking on that, but at the same time, he enjoyed his best offensive season when he was moving around the IF. Taking advantage of his flexibility seems to be the best way to maximize his value - especially if that makes you stronger at multiple positions for 162 games.
  11. If he proves to be healthy, which is clearly a big if, wouldn't trading for Crede make some sense? Here's why I think so... Cameron is going to miss the first month of the season - Hall can play CF. Theoretically Crede would benefit from/require extra days off, and Hall would make that easy. Hall's ability to play both IF and OF will result in him getting everyday player AB's even if he is moving around the diamond. Crede will cost very little to acquire - he's been injured, and is FA to be represented by Boras, and everyone knows the Sox have to trade him to make room for Josh Fields. Depending on how things go, Crede could be very tradeable at the deadline. If it doesn't work out, you haven't given up much, and you go ahead with the current plan of Hall at 3B everyday. To me this move strengthens the entire team, with Bill Hall being your primary IF backup and another option in the OF. He'll get more than enough AB's, and it further strengthens the defense. Again, it is all contingent on Crede's health, but if he looks ok in Spring Training, this would appear to me to be a rather low risk, potentially high reward move.
  12. Frankly, besides Sheets somehow managing to cobble together a complete season, Capuano may be the key to the Brewers success this year, whether it is a result of his pitching, or what he brings in a trade. If the Brewers hang on to him and count on him to go out and pitch like he did in '06, or if he turns into a trade for another piece that helps make the team better, whatever he does or the Brewers do with him, could go a long way in determining how well the Brewers do this year. Were I a betting man, I would say the Brewers woudl desperately like to seem him win a spot in the rotation. If he can manage to do that, I would say that would be very good news.
  13. That's an impressive list, but here's another one... Ichiro, ARod, Ordonez, Ortiz, Jeter, Halladay, Crawford, Hunter, Sabathia, Verlander, Sizemore, Cabrera, Carmona, Victor Martinez, Guererro, Young and so on are all American Leaguers. We can list players all day long. Reality is that the AL is still better.
  14. Lou puts this out there to point out how obviously ridiculous it is to have Soriano lead off again this year. His motive...Point out again, what a mistake the Soriano signing was. His contract is a definiite albatross since he doesn't hit when he bats lower in the line-up. Lou is trying to force Jim Hendry's hand to get him an actual lead-off hitter.
  15. They have been pretty clear they aren't going to move Hall again anytime soon unless they are forced to. Gwynn doesn't even appear to be on the Brewers radar as far as future is concerned. Those two are pretty much given - you will not see Gwynn in the everyday line-up, and Bill Hall is your starting CFer. They also seem to have a keen understanding of the need to improve defensively and they need to find a way to do that with Bill Hall in CF. So, here we are. Braun to LF is a first step in that process. Finding a 3b who can catch and throw the ball is the next step. 3B and LF are the only positions that are not in stone for next year, and in addition to individual improvement, provide the only opportunity to make the defense better.
  16. If they were to make this move of say BUsh/Cappuano + for Blalock, I would feel very good going into this season. They'll score runs, rotation looks good - very good if Sheets can manage to get through a season, defense should be a bit better, and there looks like enough bodies in the bullpen to provide the needed answers. If Gagne can return to form, the ripple effect could give them one of the best bullpens in baseball. Even if he doesn't have a great year, they should have enough to get by. (BTW, I think getting Rolen would have teh same effect.) GO Doug! Make it happen.
  17. NEw 3B coach..Dale Sveum. Ted Simmons becomes Bench coach.

  19. Although, if you think about it, perhaps it was...if greater attendance = higher payroll = better players, I'd say its possible. I find it extremely eay to believe that was an organmizational goal, and thus it makes sense that Ned was at the very least aware of it, and perhaps even somewhat motivated by it.
  20. Well which is it? He left guy in too long, or took them out too soon? He gets a pass for the bullpen being bad at the end of the year...Did those guys forget how to pitch? The rotation obviously did him no favors in the beginning of the year, but using your logic, one could perhaps say that he did a good job managing the bullpen and hanging on as long as they did, while the rotation was consistently going 5 innings. Didn't go to the hot hand when he could have? To steal a quote from Bucky Rules... So, we can't pitch Turnbow on back to back days. We can't pitch Wise on back to back days. We don't want guys like Aquino, Spurling, etc. put into high leverage situations. What's the alternative? Pitch Cordero every night until his arm falls off? That seem sto be the position of those who claim bullpen mismanagement. Of course when he overuses Cordero, that too will be bullpen mismangement, so Yost is doomed either way. When you have a bullpen full of unreliable guys, you are going to get the results we saw.
  21. Established 2 elite players in the league in Fielder and Braun (offensively anway). Identified 2 key peices of a starting rotation in Gallardo and Villenueva. Learned what we need to learn about Turnbow, and the bullpen in general. Established that Ben Sheets simply cannot be relied upon in future seasons. Established Corey Hart as a starting OFer, 5th or 6th hitter for years to come. Established your leadoff hitter and 2B. Set the infield for years to come. Said goodbye to Geoff Jenkins. Set a to priority for the off-season - improve the bullpen! Gained tremendously valuable experience in a high pressure situation. If the last week or so proved anything beyond a shadow of a doubt, its that this team simply was not ready for prime time. They wilted big time under the pressure, and their flaws were clearly exposed. That is worth something. Heading into the off-season there are clearly identified areas in which they need to improve. They are close. Now its up to Melvin and Co. to address those areas. I believe the Brewers and Cubs will battle it out again next year, only I expect them both to have win totals up around 90 or higher.
  22. We may do our part, but I expect the Cubs to win at least 2. We needed one of those last 2.
  23. Gonna need a little something out of the bottom of the order this weekend - last 2 nights the quartet of Hart, Jenkins, Hall, and Miller is a combined 2 for 27.
  24. Any combination of Brewer losses and Cub wins that adds up to 2, and we are toast.
