So apparently Zack negotiated a 3 year opt out into this deal which probably explains why it came in slightly lower then was speculated. Smart move by Zack.....if he doesn't like it there or if he pitches great he can opt out and if he struggles or gets hurt he can just opt in. -
If the brewers had been "more successful" at keeping free agents? What is hard for me to believe is that any player would feel comfortable with GS representing him in contract negotiations? I mean was Dennis Rodman not available?

Doug said in the J/S that he is not going to go over 2 years for a FA starter. Don't look for the Brewers to overpay for a second-tier pitcher, however. After getting caught holding the bag at the end of free-agent deals with Jeff Suppan and Randy Wolf, Melvin does not plan to make more than two-year offers. "We wouldn't go three years with a starter," said Melvin. "You look at those contracts and they don't usually work out. Look at all the free-agent players who have been traded the last few years. Free agency gets people excited, but it's not as effective as people would like to think.

The Brewers will clear some $40 million off the 2012 books with Zack Greinke, Shaun Marcum, Rodriguez, Wolf and shortstop Alex Gonzalez no longer in the picture. But that doesn't mean they'll have that much to spend on new talent. Salaries of other players will rise via long-term deals or arbitration. Attanasio also indicated the payroll will come down from the franchise-record level of $100 million with which the Brewers began the 2012 season. With attendance dropping from more than 3 million in 2011 to 2.83 million this year, the club will finish the year in the red, and not by just a little bit. "We're going to curb it back some," said Attanasio. "You've got to have the flexibility to add players during the season if you're in a good position. We were stretched so tight this season, though that wouldn't have mattered if we had been in position to win. We would have done something."

No interest in a 1 year 22 million dollar pitcher who had a horrible year. 1 year expensive solutions aren't the answer for us especially when the guy now has some major question marks.
