  1. I hate the deal. Arroyo is a marginal pitcher at best in my books. He's highly overrated and last year was all smoke and mirrors. He would be a downgrade on Capuano.
  2. Bedard would be the best pitcher on our staff at this point if we could acquire him athough I think Yo would move past him sometime next year. That being said if Baltimore was inclined to move him the cost would be nothing less than Yo. We aren't paying that price.
  3. Just guessing here but it sounds more likely that he's hurt. If they were just moving him to the pen to limit his innings they would have announced it and we would have seen him for an inning or two already. Hopefully if he is hurt it isn't anything major.
  4. I think he's a lot like Capuano. If we could get him cheap enough you can never have enough pitching. Not sure what San Fran would want though. I'd normally suggest young talented prospects who are close but in this case I'm not sure what they would want or realistically get for him.
  5. While I like Bush as much as the next guy I am beginning to wonder if he is one of those bad luck guys. His numbers will always look better than he actually is. One year is just fluke. Two years is the start of a bad trend.
  6. With Hall out and it being unknown when he'll come back and how effective he will be the rest of the year you have to make the call. It would take an Inman type to get him or 2-3 of our best in Brevard or West Virginia but it would likely be worth it. He seems to be snapping out of things the past couple of days. Jones won't be hitting under the Mendoza line by the end of the season and a change of scenery might just be what he needs. His salary is irrelevant if he helps to carry us into the playoffs. If he gets us a World Series we might even be able to re-sign him. Who knows.
  7. If you could swing a deal for Roberts without deleting from the current starting lineup you have to do it. We have Gallardo to step in to a starting role and from what I've seen of him so far he is an upgrade on Vargas and possibly Bush already. Who cares where Ricky goes. Roberts is an upgrade now and we are fighting for a playoff spot. If Ricky can't make a quick adaption to the outfield he would be great trade bait to bring in a reliever and an upgrade on Bush or Vargas to the starting pitching. Make him a pinch hitter for a month and see if the wrist heals up. People talk about competing for the next 3-5 years with what we have. There is no guarantee that we will be in it every year with the guys we have. Injuries, slumps, off field problems all could and will happen. Ricky isn't helping us now and now is when we need him. We are in it this year and need to pull out all stops to go for it now. If it means sacrificing part of the future so be it. Anything less would simply be unacceptable.
  8. If it's a high ankle sprain as per rotoworld we need to look for a replacement for Hall for the rest of the year. Not too many athletes in any sport are really fully recovered when they come back from this type of injury and the recovery period is often even longer than originally anticipated. 6 weeks would be a very optimistic recovery time. Next year for a full recovery is more realistic.
  9. High ankle sprain? Time to trade for an outfielder. He's out a minimum 1 1/2 months and likely won't be able to run well the rest of the year. It usually turns out that he would have healed quicker with a clean break instead. The worst case scenario just came true.
  10. Extemely disappointing to see Yo in the pen. He belongs in the rotation. He's pitching out of his element.
  11. I would hope we would go for it if the price is right. If they are willing to take some of our 2nd tier prospects like Parra and Jackson and something else let's get er done.
  12. He's likely working the phones constantly. Other than 1B you could theoretically upgrade every position. If he can make the team better let's make a deal. Our starting pitching is solid. Although some would like to have 5 Ben Sheet's on the team this won't ever happen. Our staff is as solid as any out there. We need to add one or two arms in the pen and I still think we could upgrade in the OF. We'll see what happens.
  13. We kind of need to get him signed first. I'm surprised he hasn't signed already. All I can think is he's demanding significantly over slot money. Otherwise there is no reason to have not signed as he is beginning to miss out on development time.
  14. If it's just for one or two starts I think it makes a lot of sense to bring up Gallardo. Lets see what we have. I'm not at all thrilled with the idea of Gallardo going to the pen mid season. I would make more sense to treat him like a true fifth starter in the majors and skip him to keep the innings down. I think people will be surprised with how well he would do. When you strike out as many as Gallardo you will get higher pitch counts and less innings.
  15. I'm not sure why everyone is so anxious for Villaneuva to start? He is excelling in his current role and is very valuable in it. Why fix what ain't broken? I don't see why he wouldn't be a valuable starter as well but who's to say for sure. He can start next year out of spring training.
  16. No offense to Dessens but we are a much better team without him in the lineup.
  17. I don't think it will matter what Villaneuva does tonight. He is to valuable in his role now to make him a starter this year. I'm pretty sure it will be Yo next week if Cappy can't go.
  18. That's the one thing the NHL does right. It would also allow players to start college and the team still retains their rights for 2 years. Not bad for anyone.
  19. Two things need to be done. First MLB needs to put rules in place to ensure guys can't sign for more than the suggested slot. Then you can have Boras and others scream all you want. If a Milwaukee or Pittsburg want to draft someone they know what they are paying up front and draft accordingly. It also would level the bases for small market teams as guys couldn't demand more. Either sign or don't. If your any good prove it and then you can get your big contract. A world draft is the second thing that needs to be done. It too would level the playing field.
  20. The bottom line is it will be at least 5 years before we really know what we got from this draft. If Laporta flops and our 5th, 15th or 25th pick pans out who really cares. Gallardo wasn't a first rounder but is sure turning out like one. I personally don't care if the 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, or 3rd rounder turns out as long as we get an impact player or two in the end. Jack Z has shown he can do that. That's all you can ask. I also like Laporta a lot and can see him in Milwaukee within a couple of years at most or being traded for a key component.
  21. The one thing hockey does right with it's drafted kids is puts a 3 year first contract with a maximum salary. You can sign any guy to the maximum but no more. Performance bonuses can be got around to an extent but then you know the guy is performing. It would make things a lot easier if MLB didn't just suggest signing slots but made them the maximum. Would also make agents almost irrelevant.
  22. I don't expect to see any BC promotions until after the first half title is decided. I would be disappointed if Laporta started below AA as I expect to see him with the Brewers come September. If he's as major league ready as everything I've read it would seem silly to start him lower than AA.
  23. I won't even get into names as there are the obvious ones who should get promoted and unfortunately this may lead to some releases. That is the reality of the game. That being said the good thing is the with the calibre of guys to promote none of the teams other than West Virginia should take any kind of a hit. They lose great players to promotion only to get other great players promoted. In years past this has been a problem at times where star player moves up and someone of a much lower calibre moves in to replace them.
  24. Hopefully the surgery goes well. I can't say I'm terribly surprised with the news. I hope he has invested wisely as injuries, and a lack of playing as a result are taking their tole. Age is also going to start to be a factor once he's recovered. He faces very long odds now at ever making the majors. Unfortunately this is the way it goes sometimes.
  25. I wouldn't do a deal until about a week before the deadline for Buerhle but if we are still 5 or 6 up I would have no problem giving up two high end prospects for him. Yes Yo and Carlos V have a ton of talent but I'm not convinced that Carlos will be a good starter with his stuff. I like him in the role he is in and he will dominate in that role. A veteran starter can win you a playoff game all by themselves. Buerhle fits that role.
