  1. I have lived in the Milwaukee or Madison area for most of my life, and I don't know if I've ever heard someone say they're going up to Chicago. I always hear people saying they're going down to Chicago, going down to Iowa, Illinois, etc. I go up to Duluth, up to Eau Claire, over to Milwaukee, up to the Twin Cities...you get the idea.
  2. This describes my recent experience on I-80 across Iowa and Nebraska. The speed limit is 70/75, but good luck actually going that fast half the time. One truck going 68 moves over to pass another truck going 67, and it takes miles to pass.
  3. I was driving the other day and crossed I-41 in Fond du Lac and this random thought popped up. When they decided to upgrade 41 to a full interstate, why did they route it along 894 and 94 down to the Illinois state line? Why not end it where 41 meets 94 at the Zoo Interchange? 94 and 894 are already known, established interstates, and I don't see why adding 41 to them was necessary.
  4. How much did this cost you, if you don't mind me asking? The top sections of our driveway are cracked all over the place, primarily because we did #1 about 10 years ago and the mud they used eventually settled, coupled with a heavy vehicle parked on it. It is a pain to shovel. We have a paver brick front walk and want it replaced along with the top part of the driveway.
  5. I have a Kamado Joe Classic 2. I grill and smoke with it, it's great for making pizza, and the charcoal doesn't really take that long to heat up. When I'm simply grilling, I light the charcoal, then go prep whatever I'm going to grill and make as a side. By the time I'm prepped, the grill is ready to go. I bought it for its smoking capability and it hasn't disappointed me. I can easily get 12+ hours at a consistent temperature, though there was a bit of a learning curve getting to that point. Ribs take 4-5 hours, and my favorite thing is smoking my own bacon (pork belly is cheaper per pound than store-bought bacon and it's so much better). I also have an immersion circulator and sous vide a lot of different foods, often finishing them on the grill/smoker. I actually really cheat with brisket and sous vide it for 24 hours then smoke it for 2-3 hours. I've also sous vide steaks, chops, etc and finish them on the grill and they are fantastic.
  6. Got my 2nd Moderna yesterday, and had a fever and a terrible headache all day today.
  7. I got my first round of the vaccine at the beginning of the month at Walgreens. When I made my appointment, the online scheduler glitched and I was unable to make my second appointment. Rather, it double booked my first appointment. They told me I'd have to call the 1-800 number to schedule my 2nd dose. I'm now eligible for my 2nd round and I cannot make an appointment for it. I wait on hold for at least 45 minutes each time I call only for them to not have any appointments. Due to the scheduling glitch, I cannot use the online scheduler (I can't cancel the double-booked appointment, and neither can Walgreens from their end). I am quite frustrated by this.
  8. I have a bottle of Gary's, which is fine in a pinch, but I have found that taking the time to muddle cherries, orange, sugar, and bitters is well worth it.
  9. And to prevent store employees that were trying to enforce it from getting attacked. It also doesn't help that as soon as the mask mandate was put in place, a number of county sheriffs said they would not be enforcing it. Why enforce a rule if there are no repercussions?
  10. Guidance our city parks department has says that in order to open restrooms in parks, they must be sanitized daily. We contract it out and the contract has them cleaning restrooms 5 times a week, so we're looking at opening fewer restrooms in the parks and seeing if the company will come in every day. POJ don't have the element of flushing toilets which may cause further spread of germs in the bathroom. On the topic of antibody tests, of the 4000 performed in Dane County last week, 1.5% of them came back as positive.
  11. There is no way online learning can replace in-person education for most grades. Elementary students need direct instruction from their teachers and need social interactions with their peers. It's incredibly difficult to teach my kids when I have my own responsibilities. I'm also a HS social studies teacher. Right now, I'm focused on creating assignments that will help boost grades for students that are not passing because their 3rd quarter grade is their floor and they can only improve, not go down. But thinking ahead to the fall if needed, I'm already looking at guiding students to the treasure trove of resources out there and they get to control how they present what they learned. It won't be worksheet based. I'm also thinking I could start to integrate those things into my classroom when we get back. However, as was mentioned earlier, this has exposed the huge digital divide we have. Many of my kids don't have internet at home. Instead, they rely on their phones with data. Every student has a Chromebook but not all have the wifi to hook up to. Any transition to even partial digital learning cannot happen unless that can be addressed.
  12. Rocks, specifically a single, large ice cube. The orange liqueur I had was Royale Orange.
  13. I cooked a brisket this weekend using this method: https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2016/08/sous-vide-barbecue-smoked-bbq-brisket-texas-recipe.html I cooked it sous vide at 155 for 25 hours then put it in the refrigerator overnight. Today, I smoked it at 225 over oak for 2 hours. It was possibly the best thing I have ever cooked in my life.
  14. Rebel Yell with a small splash of orange liqueur is amazing.
  15. I don't know anyone who is working from home that has had to find childcare for their kids while working from home. The only kids that I know of that are still going to daycare are friends of ours whose dad is a nurse manager and their mom's company only went to work from home once the safer-at-home order kicked in. Daycares have prioritized the limited spaces they can have to people who cannot work from home. With the transition to online learning, there is no reason why I cannot work from home with my kids in the house. They will be spending some time doing their own homework and I have a few other things planned for them. I am also not required to do live classes, just be available for office hours throughout the day which won't be complicated by the presence of my children.

  17. I don't know whether to put this here or in the "Bugging You" thread, but I'm going with it here. We start online teaching Monday, doing a week of virtual PD then instruction the week after. The district sent out an email yesterday with a Q&A, and it included this: WHEN WORKING REMOTELY, DO I NEED TO SECURE CHILDCARE OUTSIDE OF MY HOME? The expectation is that you secure childcare. Whether the childcare is outside of your home or in your home is up to you. You cannot watch your children and work at the same time. Employees who are working from home can flex their hours within the workday. You may be eligible to apply for FFCRA leave time if you are unable to secure childcare. So I am somehow supposed to secure childcare either inside or outside of my home in a handful of days? And that childcare is supposed to lead my own kids' online learning with them? And I'm either supposed to bring someone to my house or send my kids somewhere during the safer-at-home order? I can online teach with my kids around. It may not be perfect teaching, but my kids are old enough to be able to do things on their own for periods at a time. Totally ridiculous.

  19. I saw the same thing! They were probably satellites all in the same orbit.
  20. My kids are closed through the 6th, but I have to still go Monday and Tuesday. I don't get it.
  21. While it is good, I feel like it's really expensive for what you get. Last time I went there I spent nearly $30 for a family of four and I walked out still feeling hungry.
  22. It may be cliche, but I love Ian's in Madison. Also, Slavatore's Tomato Pies in Sun Prairie or East Side of Madison. They both are a bit far from where I live but it's well worth the drive when we do go. Also on my list is Mequon Pizza Company and Tomaso's in Cedarburg, and Happy Joe's in Green Bay (Dubuque also has one that we stop at when we head to Iowa to see family).
  23. Light bulbs that are supposed to last for 12 years last for 6 months.
