  1. From Super Bowl talks to merciless booing in 3 quarters.
  2. Yes it was, and stupid play by a veteran. First Contact was clearly inbounds. ..... and then he threw him down by the neck out of bounds.
  3. Tony Corente involved in a poorly officiated game? Shocking, I tell you.
  4. Defensive front has been tough on short yardage. Great to see.
  5. Love the defensive pressure so far.
  6. Well, good field position for two bears drives, and I think the defense held up well.
  7. Not sure you could have a more deflating start to the season.
  8. This is a thread about Cain, as a reminder. Grisham discussion (as a replacement) has a place, but let's not let this go off the rails and make this another thread about Freitas.
  9. Exactly.
  10. Enough of this crap, or we're handing out bannings.
  11. Goodson started at ILB for the Giants for 20 games during his 3 seasons since being a 4th rounder in 2016. Not sure why he fell out of favor with the Shurmur staff. No word on the return GB gave for him, but I'd think it insignificant.
  12. Are they a bad team because they're actually bad, or because a good Badger team dismantled them? Afterall, Vegas thought enough of USF to make the line close-ish, and there were posters here that had this one as a possible loss. I guess we won't know for several weeks, but is it not possible that USF looked like a bad team as a result of how well the Badgers played against them?
  13. Fair enough. I think the danger, though, is that this viewpoint is reliant on the idea that 1) Cain continues to provide the elite defense for another 1-2 years, and that 2)His offense doesn't decline to the point that it's subtracting from value. So far this year his offense has been flat to slightly positive, making him a very useful player if you play his level of defense. If he maintains, he's right at the 2 WAR= $16 million in salary level, which is perfectly acceptable. If that turns negative, however, it's obviously a different story. I just worry that he'll cliff at some point, which obviously we won't know if it'll happen or not until it does or doesn't. I guess I've just seen too many Brewer signings implode in the last year to be comfortable here. The Brewers usually have to throw that extra year on to get the deal done, and I think it has rarely worked out well historically.
  14. That's a bit of semantics, though. They've had no problems paying Suppan, Wolf, etc. to not play for them via release. Heck, they're still paying Aramas Ramirez and Matt Garza (or were until recently). I don't think you can assume this to be a hard-line stance when it's more likely a function of them not having a lot of high-priced contracts for players that may have some value to actually move. You realize that this is a bit double-sided, right? No one would take that contract, but he's great value over the next three years if he plays defense? I simply, IMO of course, can't believe both to be simultaneously correct. And again, I disagree with the last sentence. The speed will fade, which will cause a reduction in his range. That's not atypical, that's physiologically real. Scientific studies have also shown a linear decline in throwing function due to aging as well. I'll re-emphasize my stance on this- I think Cain will have value to the 2020 Brewers. I question whether he will to the 2021 and 2022 Brewers. And for that reason, I think you evaluate the possibility of dealing him if someone showed legit interest. Beyond that, for 2020, they're probably a better team with him on it.
  15. I guess I'm not a fan of potentially throwing away an opportunity for a good season away for a chance to be better 3 years from now.
  16. Coan wasn't exactly a walk-on. He was a 4-star QB recruit himself. I'd rather win games now and let Mertz redshirt than to throw him in and hope he can upset Michigan with two starts under his belt...
  17. Anyone think Payton Lynch, who was waived by Seattle, might be worth a look as backup QB? His star has flamed out mightily since the 2016 draft, but he had a nice camp in Seattle. Also didn't realize that Perry hadn't been signed at this point. I'd have thought someone would have grabbed him for the minimum at the very least. It suggests that he's not healthy, obviously.
  18. The last part is obviously the key, but he was a very productive 3-4 ILB in Denver just two seasons ago. Not sure what happened in Oakland, but might be a legit opportunity.
  19. A few additional thoughts this morning: Taylor obviously is the big story. The o-line play was inconsistent as others noted, but they opened up some great holes, and I love the apparent plan to get Taylor the ball in the passing game. If he becomes a Montee Ball-type receiving the ball, he'll be in New York at the end of the year for sure. The o-line is inexperienced, but the talent is there. Seemed like Chryst's plan passing the ball set them up for success, generally. Coan was great with the quick throws and short/middle passes that help limit a pass rush. Excited to watch the unit (hopefully) mature as we head through this year. The defense certainly looked better than last year, though obviously it's one game. It's fairly apparent how the inexperience and significant injuries to key players last year hurt the 2018 defense. They've talked up Baun for a couple of years now, and now that he's healthy, he looked like a potential monster pash rusher. Someone compared Coan last night to Tolzien in his time as starter with the Badgers- yep. If he plays like Tolzien did, they'll win a lot of games. Manage the game, hit the easy/moderate throws, and HANG ON TO THE BALL (unlike Hornibrook's 2 devastating bone-headed INT's a game). That's all Wisconsin truly needs at QB with their running game. Kicking.... ugh. I fear this is going to be a major problem, but hopefully that was just first game jitters. But that FG was ugly. Finally, this game was supposed to be a legit challenge for Wisconsin on the road. The line was -11-ish, (10.5 at kickoff, I believe) and they dismantled them in a way I'd have expected them to dismantle directional Michigan next weekend. A very impressive, very exciting performance overall.
  20. Got better as they got to the second quarter. He started horribly. It WAS the first quarter of the first game of the season, after all...
  21. I think we've become a bit spoiled as football fans if we're upset about Coan's performance in that half. I thought he played well, minus the two missed deep balls. Obviously, you hope that deep accuracy comes with more than 1 quarter of football under your belt in the season, but he played accurate, smart football overall that half.
  22. I'm glad someone else mentioned this too. I thought Bell was the HC, until they mentioned Charlie Strong as almost an afterthought.
  23. Because being underpaid thus far in his contract doesn't mean that a team like the Brewers shouldn't try to avoid the inverse going forward? We won the first two years. Hooray!
  24. Sorry, this completely wrong. There are plenty of kinesiological studies out there that show the physical peak years of the male human athlete. Yep, Cain could be different, but saying there isn't a typical time of athletic peak and anticipated timeframe of decline isn't based in any sort of scientific fact.
