  1. For what it's worth, the Brewers are soliciting applications for a possible vacancy for their number two radio play-by-play position. My friend works in broadcast and got an email today saying to get his tapes in if interested. The JS has picked up on this: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/37246944.html They really could have at least waited until this was official, but sometimes it seems like the Brewers just don't see the whole PR picture in terms of how something like this could look if the press figures it out.
  2. Bo always seems to get his boys into Big Ten play ready to go. Sure would be interesting to see another run at the conference title in another "down/rebuilding" year for the program.
  3. It sure would be interesting if the Brewers actually beat out a team like the Dodgers for a guy that they're both legitimately in the running for.
  4. Come on...I think pointing the finger at the manager for a guy getting hurt is pretty weak. It's not really a question of blaming him for Sheets getting hurt, it's wondering how long Sheets was hurt before he stopped pitching.
  5. in my opinion, Cordero isn't that great, even when healthy. He's had ERA's of 2.94, 1.82, 3.19, and 3.36 in his 4 full seasons in the Majors so far, so he's pretty good.
  6. Tom checks in, summarizing a couple of things from around the web (the Brewers and Dodgers have similar offers out there, and that the Brewers are making the stronger push to try and sign him): http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/37233879.html
  7. Thanks for doing the leg-work on that, sbrylski, that was very helpful.
  8. I still think the Dodgers' "offer" is a bargaining ploy by Hoffman's agent If the word of the Dodgers' offer is true, it may simply be a ploy to get a guaranteed 2nd year from Milwaukee.
  9. According to this the Yankees can sign a total of 9 type A and B's. That may be a total though- it doesn't break down how many of the 9 total can be A or B, and everything in the past has suggested that they can only sign 3 type A's. Maybe it's 3 Type A, 6 Type B for 9 total? Not sure. Are they unable to sign him? Or do they forfeit something else? Unable to sign, but as M2S mentions, none of us have actually read the language to know for sure.
  10. This came out of nowhere this morning and over about 12 hours has gone to very optimistic, then very pessimistic with word of the Dodgers' involvement. It really seems as though it's going to come down to being handed the closers' job vs. staying on the west coast, assuming money figures are in the same ballpark.
  11. Sheets can't end up with the Yankees, as they're at their Type-A FA limit.
  12. Tom H's latest has them making progress towards a deal: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/37172074.html Dodgers are interested as well...
  13. Please the Brewers don't need to regress back to past years and sign also rans .we need to move foward and get quality Fa in here. They're not talking about signing Mulder to be the #2 starter, they're talking about signing him to a low risk, incentive-laden deal. What's the harm in that?
  14. I haven't even seen any Ford F-150 ads either. No, none at all. (Sweet merciful crap!)
  15. Soda Popinski was my nemesis.
  16. People complain all the time throughout sports about announcers leaning towards one of the schools when calling a game, but I don't think I've heard an announcer blatantly rooting for a team like the color guy on the Wisconsin/Penn State game today.
  17. KING HIPPO! And the welcome return of Glass Joe and Von Kaiser as well. True, true awesomeness.
  18. Roughly half of the All-Stars each year are 1st or 2nd round picks. In addition to what X said, it should also be pointed out that the comp picks span from the 1st round through the 2nd, and that with the exception of the most recent drafts for obvious reasons, the Brewers had their 1st or 2nd round pick become a solid major leaguer in every draft since 2001.
  19. I don't know what I'm more upset by- Melvin completely writing off resigning Sheets, or his seeming attempt to stockpile draft picks. Just to be clear, you think he's not re-signing our free agents intentionally in order to take the draft picks instead?
  20. I have found that the older I get the less fun Christmas is. Oddly, for me personally, I think I appreciate the gifts a heck of a lot more. Granted, the older you get the less video games, 'toys', and fun stuff you get (and you're not getting up at 6 am to open gifts from Santa), but I seriously opened two pairs of jeans on Thurs and was like 'Wow, jeans! I really need these!'
  21. The argument that it adds depth to the rotation only holds water if Looper is better than one of the starters not including Suppan who gets a rotation spot by default because of his pricetag. That's not really the definition of depth at all and doesn't address the point that people are actually trying to make- he adds depth to the staff in two clear ways: even if he pushes McClung to the bullpen, that means that if (when) one of our starters gets hurt, you can then put McClung in the rotation to fill the spot instead of having to go with someone like Difelice. Also, having McClung in the bullpen adds depth and increases the quality in the pen, as you have McClung there instead of someone like Difelice.
  22. I thought the roads were in excellent shape yesterday? I did the Madison-Milwaukee commute about 11 AM or so. It was snowing like crazy, but nothing was sticking, leaving nothing but wet pavement. I also made my trip at that time Weds., and thought the roads were quite good.
  23. The more I think of it the more I hate this potential deal. But to be fair bklyn, you hate almost all potential deals, including the Sabathia one.
  24. True. My point was that I don't think Melvin's player signings/trades (outside of Sabathia) had very much to do with the Brewers' success in 2008. Cameron, Kendall, Torres, and Bush all had a large part in the Brewers' success last year, IMO.
  25. Or, as someone else mentioned, if you are going to take a chance on a pitcher that is as likely as not to totally suck, why not bring in Ollie Perez? Well, for one reason, you'd have to give the Mets a first round pick for Perez. For another, Looper actually out-pitched Perez in 2008, FWIW.
