  1. I am going to wait until after this stimulus package is passed to file my taxes, because apparently this credit is being altered so that I never have to pay it back (As it stands it is essentially a $7,500 no interest loan that you have to pay back over 15 years, $500/yr in additional tax). The stimulus proposed that homes bought in 2009 would not have to pay it back but it isn't clear if that is the case for homes bought in 2009 but claimed on 2008 returns. So I am going to wait, I might have to claim it on my 2009. Boy, they're sure doing a heck of a job to make this confusing. The current stimulus proposal does double the amount and eliminate the repayment, but it's not a refundable credit, meaning that you only get back what you have due on your taxes. So, if you have a tax bill of say 4,000, that's what you get from the credit, not the full 15k or 10%. Not to mention that it'll take place from when the new bill is signed, so people closing on homes in the next week or two are in a major limbo with regards to the credit and filing their taxes.
  2. Baggot had a lovely column slamming online message boards yesterday, so the mention here is timely. (Edit: I don't mean to hijack your post, Peavey, but here's the link - hawing)
  3. I didn't watch seasons 1 or 2 so I don't know if there was a President in the story line before David Palmer but obviously that would have been another President that Jack worked for. So that's 7 presidents - 3 full terms and parts of 2 others (unless David Palmer served 2 terms) 12+ years Palmer was on the verge of being elected at the end of season 1, and was president for season 2 and 3. At the end of the 3rd season, he announced that he wasn't running for re-election vs. the guy that Logan took over for. So, 8 presidents (if you include whoever was in charge in season one while Palmer was a Senator) over 12+ years.
  4. If the Padres actually wanted Gwynn, they probably would have done that trade by now. I think you could probably do a Gwynn for a low A ball guy with little ceiling deal and have both sides be fairly happy about it.
  5. Wow, they're sure not shy on the unexpected developments so far. And the plot is moving right along.
  6. Didn't Braunie just have a bobblehead day? Am I missing something? He had one last year, but the Brewers in the past have given out 2nd bobbles to commemorate specific accomplishments/achievements, and this one is apparently the GW HR for the wildcard.
  7. I said if they brought in another pitcher McClung still could be cut. Saying it repeatedly doesn't make it so, end. McClung is a virtual lock to be on the 25 man in April, barring an injury to him. You don't cut guys in spring training that put up ERA's near 4 in the previous season when you're short on pitching and/or have a ton of question marks in both the bullpen and rotation.
  8. His career numbers are not that great. I guess I don't see where you're getting that from. He's been above average as both a starter and reliever every year in his career since 1999.
  9. Looper is likely about a 1-1.5 win improvement over McClung. Better than what the Brewers had but given the available pitchers this offseason not really exciting. But that's not the whole picture- how much better is McClung than who he replaces in the bullpen?
  10. Tom's latest blog: Also, a reader who knows a friend of Looper heard from the friend that Looper expects to come to an agreement with the Brewers today. The reader said the friend had been in touch with Looper. So, if I'm reading his post correctly, he's basing his belief that we're signing Looper on the above, and because Looper's wife wouldn't deny the report when she was reached for comment? Guh... http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/39319807.html
  11. Looper's ERA away from pitcher friendly "New Busch" the last 2 seasons has been 6.81 and 4.52, or a raw average of 5.67. According to ESPN, New Busch was only one ranking higher as a pitcher friendly park than Miller Park (22 for the Keg, 23 for Busch). http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor
  12. Looper is pretty similar to what we already have at 3-5 so he wouldn't really upgrade the rotation, just the depth. Not a single person in our 3-5 threw 199 innings last year, and only one of them posted a sub 4.2 ERA in the innings that they did pitch. I fail to see how this is not an upgrade. I suggested over the weekend in the Sheets thread that not getting the picks for Ben might free up a couple million to sign a starter, and the timing of this (along with the abrupt about-face in the organization's stance on rotation depth) really makes me wonder if that was indeed the case.
  13. The league figures out that he has no plate discipline Well, he's had good plate discipline in every season at every level before last year, and even then it was only an issue for half the season.
  14. Does it help prevent injuries too? No.... actually, use tends to lead to more 'nicked-up' type injuries, I believe.
  15. Yes, the top players that have less than 3 years of service time qualify as 'super two' players that get a 4th year of arbitration. That's way overly simplified, but more or less the gist.
  16. Four separate sources have apparently told SI that AROD tested positive for steroids in 2003, when he won the AL MVP: http://sportsillustrated....iguez-steroids/index.html
  17. Yeah...at least the Brewers will probably save a few million this June by not having to sign those extra high draft picks like SeriesFinale alluded to. True, interestingly enough. You have to wonder if the Brewers/Melvin now have an extra 3 million or so to sign a pitcher with as a result.
  18. There are rumors out there that he may have done some damage in an off season work. Link?
  19. No suggestions yet for Oliver Stone to play Beane? http://www.notablebiographies.com/images/uewb_09_img0661.jpg http://msnbcmedia3.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/070103/070103_beane_vmed_4p.widec.jpg
  20. Melvin has got to get something done. Like doing whatever was necessary to sign Sheets, as some wanted just two short days ago? I think at this point Melvin has earned the benefit of the doubt to acknowledge that he (and other teams) know things that we clearly do not. If guys on the market at this point aren't signed, there's a reason why.
  21. So, if both these are true, what team(s) would be left for Sheets? They really can't both be true. I think as each day passes, it becomes increasingly likely that Sheets takes a one year deal to come back to Milwaukee, simply because we're the only team that won't have to give a pick up to get him.
  22. It's still pretty rough on my Blackberry Pearl, mainly because all the forum jumps and such at the top have to be scrolled through first before you can get to any posts.
  23. Don't care for the Mendoza pick up. I don't see how anyone is a bad pick up on a minor league deal. If they do well, it's surprise depth. If they stink, you cut them and are out very little.
  24. The Brewers need options in case of injury, and Wright helps with some of that depth. Yeah, it's a meh move, but Doug has an astounding history of success with meh moves.
  25. Say what you will about whether the Cubs have improved or not this offseason, but it's undeniable that they're destroying any semblance of depth that they had...
