  1. If our rotation right now is Gallardo, Parra, Bush, Suppan and McClung, who is Looper better than? Suppan and McClung? Looper is statistically very similar to Bush, and you already mentioned Suppan and McClung. If he's a 3/4 in our rotation, that's a nice piece to add to the staff. but improving from Soup and McClung isn't that great of a feat. All the more reason to bring someone like Looper in, IMO. A history of success and better results than these two. If it's not a great feat to replace them, then we should be excited about replacing them with an option that isn't just different or a meager improvement, but is potentially a lot better. And that doesn't even factor in the improvement of having McClung in the pen over a guy like Dillard either.
  2. I don't think Looper is much of an addition. I guess I don't see how he's not. He's probably better than a few of our rotation options, and if nothing else makes the staff better to some degree. As long as it's not breaking the bank, I'm for upgrades in any manner. If you think he'll regress as a starter, there's nothing keeping him from heading into the bullpen if he does show ineffectiveness in the rotation.
  3. I am leery of signing guys that Dave Duncan and LaRussa turned into good pitchers. Looper was a good reliever before he got to St Louis.
  4. Could we please relax with the numbers game until we actually know the numbers? No kidding... one person threw out a random prediction of 9 million per and some people seem to have taken that as fact.
  5. Melvin confirms interest in Looper, per Tom H, but "not close": http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/36539949.html
  6. My first thought was, "Yuk!" Then I looked at his numbers, and on second thought: "Yuk. I guess I'm not looking at the numbers the same way. He was a solid starter last year, and in the past had been a very good reliever on a very consistent basis. Unless they're talking 8-10 million for him, I fail to see the harm in a 2-3 year deal for something like 12-18 million.
  7. I really like this idea, hopefully this isn't in the same boat with 'Cameron to Yankees will likely happen within a day'.
  8. Looper is no better than Dave Bush so we really should be aiming higher. The nice thing about Looper is the flexibility he provides. He's either a decent 4th/5th starter, or can go back to being a really good reliever out of the pen as well. Depending on the money, this could be a nice signing, though not a blockbuster. And this should probably be in the Rumors forum.
  9. The more I think about it the more I believe the Brewers can't afford Dunn's defense anywhere but 1st base. Probably true. But if you sign him to a 3-4 year deal, you really only have to put up with his defense in the OF for one year or so before he does end up at first base due to the likeliness of a Fielder trade.
  10. Yeah, I don't know how Lee for Podsednick/Vizcaino was omitted, as it was probably Melvin's best deal by far.
  11. That is good news on the Sheets front. If they sign Pettitte I don't think they would go after Sheets too. I don't think they even can if they sign Pettitte because of the restrictions on the number of A free agents they can sign.
  12. Yep who knows maybe Sabathia saw how Brewer fans treated Sheets. Maybe he saw how the Brewer fans would boo anyone at any time. I really think this is a valid question, end, thanks for bringing it up. Sheets and CC had plenty of opportunities to discuss their situations together over the past few months, so it wouldn't shock me if whatever the heck is going on between the front office and Sheets or whatever reason Sheets doesn't want to come back to Milwaukee had been discussed at some point.
  13. Are they young? Yes, absolutely. Are they inexperienced? Nope. I agree with the sentiment that youth and inexperience is no longer a valid claim for this team, but also agree that considering the ages listed above, there's still a lot of natural progression and improvement to come from these players, as they haven't hit their statistical peak years yet, and some are still years away from them.
  14. Years of our "major" signings being guys like David Hulse, Kevin Reimer, Lyle Mouton, and Luis Lopez is sure to make people leery. But the thing is that in years past, those signings were major league deals and guarantees to be on the 25-man. These two moves were minor-league signings with no guarantees other than an invite to Spring Training.
  15. Anything that's hosted on an internal server should be fine because of your company's firewall. It's external web servers that can be affected. I understood the first sentence, but don't understand the 2nd?
  16. Tom H reports the Yankees finally called back today, and Melvin told them they're probably not interested in moving Cameron anymore: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/36407839.html
  17. It's still early but it's looking more and more like Zduriencik was the brains of the Brewers' operation. I guess I fail to see how Jack had anything to do with the offseason moves of the past 5 seasons. I'm happy with anyone on a minor league deal. From the reactions in this thread, you'd think they were signed to huge contracts to be the starting outfielders or something, which is puzzling.
  18. Mike Cameron is already a type B free agent so if he has a year similar to last years he will stay a type B and maybe might even reach type A status. Trading Cameron for anything less than what we could get as a comp pick would be foolish and Melky and Kei wasnt doing it for me. That's only assuming that the Brewers offer him arbitration, which is far from a given considering it's a year out.
  19. This team could lose 90 next year as presently constituted. Or make a run at the playoffs again, as they're the basically same team that was in contention enough to acquire Sabathia to get them to the wildcard.
  20. Allow me to echo the 'love it' sentiment. Like homer, if I put a DVD in the mail today, I'll have a new one on Thursday. I have the unlimited 1-at-a-time plan, and usually get 2 disks per week (8 per month) and watch some instantly as well. The only catch is that there's a bit of a wait for popular new releases (like the Dark Knight right now) unless you get it right away, but that's typically not a big deal for me.
  21. Any pitcher would love to have that lineup for run support. .....and not be real thrilled about pitching in that home park.
  22. I sure hope Melvin doesn't take Cabrera for Cameron. I agree. I'd actually rather have Cabrera/Igawa at a reduced rate than just Cabrera, I think, if we're determined to make a deal for some reason. At least then you're getting something other than a clear one-for-one downgrade in center for 2009. Fortunately it's looking less and less like we're determined to make a deal.
  23. Mota is/was a bad pitcher. Mota was above replacement level last year. Considering that the Mets were running guys out there last year that couldn't claim that. And I shudder to think who else the Brewers would have been forced to run out there if they didn't have Mota, especially early in the season when he was pitching well. You hated Mota from the second that trade was announced, FTJ. Can you honestly say you're looking at this without bias? Exactly -- plus you don't need 71 innings to learn that Joe Winkelsas sucks -- especially at $4M/year Yet again I'll mention that the reports of the Brewers acquiring Igawa have the Yankees picking up some of his salary- so it won't be at $4M/year. And Winklesas didn't have the success in the Japanese leagues or at AAA that Igawa had. If he's nothing more than a replacement-level player, imo there's just no need to spend as much money & commit as many years as the Crew would have to do. We don't know how much money that the Brewers will have to spend. If we're on the hook for say 2 million/year, the story changes quite a bit.
  24. From the article: Whether Capuano is ready to pitch by 2009 Opening Day remains to be seen. He has been rehabbing at the Brewers' training facility in Phoenix, and assistant general manager Gord Ash, who oversees the team's medical program, said Capuano might need a few extra weeks to work into pitching shape. With a Minor League contract, he can do so with one of the team's affiliates. That sounds more optimistic than a June return, unless Gord is using 'a few extra weeks' really liberally.
  25. Mota's WPA was -0.49. Pretty sure the Mets aren't upset about jettisoning a pitcher who harmed his team and cost $3.5 m. Only if his WPA wasn't better than the guys they replaced him with, right? Yes Igawa has value, but its gamble at $12m on 29 year old who couls easily be passed his prime due to abuse by Japanese managers. I think almost every recent report on the trade has the Yankees picking up some of the 12 million.
