  1. I think it worked out better for the Mets. The Mets gave up a guy that ended up being a very serviceable reliever for a guy that they cut a few days after the trade. Considering that the Mets' bullpen was horrible and the big reason for why the Brewers made the playoffs and they didn't, I couldn't disagree more. And regarding Igawa, most people here are willing to scream about 'small sample sizes' with regards to any stats over less than a full season or two, yet people are willing to write off Igawa after a whopping 16 Major League appearances? I'm not saying or predicting that he's going to be wonderful in an extended opportunity, but his history suggests that the potential is certainly there for him to be serviceable in some role.
  2. I really hope we don't do a salary dump without something else somewhat big up his sleeve for that money.. Maybe one of the reasons the Brewers seem ok with taking Igawa is that they've got somebody that they're close to signing and need to free up cash ASAP?
  3. There's a thread over at Badgermaniac with a poster citing a "Padre Website" rumoring Peavy for Escobar and Periard, pending Peavy's approval. No link provided by the poster, and nothing seemingly anywhere on line suggesting this is anything other than an internet rumor that may be entirely made-up. http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=193&f=2570&t=3603025
  4. What exactly do the Brewers see in Igawa? The guy has been a complete failure each chance he has gotten in the majors. Over a very small 71-inning sample, FWIW.
  5. Tom speculates in his latest blog that if Igawa is included in the trade, the Yankees would eat at least some of his contract. Doug expects talks to resume Monday: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/36138289.html
  6. If we're taking a worse pitcher and paying more money for him, I can't understand why Doug is so anxious to get this done. I don't think Doug is anxious to make the deal as proposed, which is why it has hit a snag and doesn't seem nearly anywhere close to imminent as it did on Thursday.
  7. he kinda feasts on LHP, his splits against RH pitching aren't that much better than Lamb's and if his defense is that bad, I'd rather just stick with Lamb/Hall. But the whole point is that he's better vs. both RHP and LHP than the Lamb/Hall platoon numbers, and is at least as good defensively as Lamb, who as the RHP-hitting part of the platoon will get most of the playing time.
  8. Then again Mike Lamb was-17.2 last season so its not like the guy getting most of the playing time right now is good. Exactly- and if/when Lamb is struggling at the plate as well, his replacement (Gamel) will probably be worse yet. I say go all out for Wigginton.
  9. Quite possible about their own free agents, but I'm not sure. Especially when they refused to offer arby.
  10. Not, its the Yankees using up the amount of FAs they can sign while still wanting to get a hitter. Then why would they be turning their attention to Pettitte, who is also a type A free agent that wouldn't let them get a big free agent hitter?
  11. He's kind of at a weird price point for a platoon player Cough...Bill Hall....cough... It should be pointed out that while Wigginton mashes LHP, he still put up a .810 OPS vs RHP last year as well, so it's not like he'd have to be used exclusively as a platoon guy. He actually seems like a pretty cost-effective option for upgrading 3B fairly considerably, especially if we could get salary relief for Hall.
  12. Don't you hate Jenkins with every fiber of your being? Or am I confusing you with someone else? KCBrewerfan, I'd assume. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. I know he does not play CF, but I would rather have Ibanez than Cameron. Ibanez was certainly better at the plate than Cameron last year, but part of the appeal of Cameron is that since both Ibanez and Cameron are in their mid-30's, Cameron is only on a 1-year deal. So as they decline, we're only on the hook for him for one more year, while we could be stuck with a declining Ibanez until he's 39. And also, Cameron is one of the best defensive OF's in the game, and Ibanez is one of the worst. He's a trainwreck even in the corner OF's, and as he gets older it could become truly disturbing to see him in the OF anywhere. Not really thrilled with any of those guys. I guess I'm not sure why, as each one of them would be an upgrade for our current team. Smoltz could be a huge upgrade depending on his health.
  14. I know it was mentioned in previous pages, but according to MLBTR,the Brewers asked about Igawa instead of the Yanks trying to dump him on the Brewers. While this may or may not be accurate Did they specifically say that it was contrary to reports? Otherwise, they probably got the rumor wrong.
  15. Tom H's latest update says the details are being worked out, mainly talks about a second player coming back to the Brewers. Talks will resume Friday: http://www.jsonline.com/s...ts/brewers/36024599.html# With the usually close-to-the-vest Melvin openly saying that the deal is a "strong possibility", this deal is surely going to happen in some form, IMO.
  16. The only reason Sheets wouldnt be interested in coming back is because we havent shown him any love and respect. That's completely your assumption, not anything close to fact. Other potential reasons: He wants to play closer to home He wants to try something different after 8 years His wife doesn't like Milwaukee or Milwaukee schools for their now school age children Prince Fielder steals his post-game sandwiches etc. I have no idea if any of the above are true or factors at all, but they and any number of reasons could just as easily be significant factors in his decisions- we have no way of knowing as none of us have knowledge of the situation first-hand.
  17. They have the Mariners giving up 4.5 wins this year but getting back 4 wins this year plus lower costs now and going forward. 4.5 wins is only based on their assumption that Putz is a league average pitcher in 2009. He was well above average in 2006 and 2007 (especially), and is switching to the NL. I think it's quite conceivable that he'll be significantly above average in 2009.
  18. Its pretty hard not to panic when we refuse to negotiate with Ben Sheets and Melvin mentions guys like Jaime Moyer. bklyn, you've been warned about repetitive posting several times on this board, and this is the third different thread you've posted this in in the last 15-20 minutes. Please, stop. Thanks.
  19. Actually it happened both in 2007 and 2008. Sheets made 5 starts in late August/September in 2007, FWIW.
  20. Basically the deal works out even for next season Explain, please?
  21. Enough of the over the hill stiffs like Moyer That stiff put up a 3.71 ERA last year. What is wrong with this organization. we were willing to pay CC which means we have some money to spend yet wont even make an offer to Ben Sheets It takes two to tango, and it's been made clear many times over the last year that Sheets isn't real interested in coming back to Milwaukee either.
  22. Moyer is certainly intriguing, and has really flown under the discussion radar here after a really nice 2008. Smoltz could be interesting as well, and depending on how the Brewers' view his arm strength, could potentially be a starter or closer, I'd think. Johnson isn't a big surprise either considering what we've heard already.
  23. This quote, referenced by FTJ earlier, along with other quips in this thread seem to paint a picture that the staff has collectively decided to rid the site of "impulsive expressions of displeasure." As a member of the moderating team, I can assure you that no such thing has been implemented, decided upon, or even discussed. It seems as though the concerns here have stemmed largely from reading too much into the locking of one thread. However, if the major problem is a handful of posters dominating discussions with repetitive arguments (something that I agree is problematic), I guess I don't see how that relates to the vent thread. The first post of the locked vent thread: I am growing weary of every topic including a new form of... "This offseason is looking like my worst fears realized. " The first response: Well clearly this thread was intended for me and my pessimism towards this offseason. Before I share my thoughts I want to apologize to all those I have annoyed with my negative and panicky rantings.
  24. but that seems to be a different issue than "negativity" which is what I am addressing. Again, if people have examples of negativity being curbed outside of this vent thread being locked while annoying positivity has been promoted, this would lend credibility to this claim. As of yet, I haven't seen any examples provided. I think the point of the lock is really missed here. I completely admit that I was considering locking the thread as well before B19 did it, but it was because what the poster that started the thread EXPRESSLY stated in the opening post of that thread was that he started it so that a couple of posters who were posting the same thing over and over in every thread were doing it there instead of in every thread. The lock allows negativity to continue in other threads, the issue we have here is giving the same posters who were posting repetitive stuff another avenue to post the same stuff yet again. It seems like an outright attempt to shift the overall tone of the fanbase segment who posts here, in order to fit in with the outlook of the staff. Again, you're basing that on the locking of ONE thread, by one moderator, which was openly admitted to have been set up to give a couple of specific posters an avenue to express their grief for the 16th time on that particular day?
  25. Not sure why. Gutierrez is nice defensively but stinks with the bat, Chavez is a throw-in, Heilman has to rebound from a bad 2008 while in his 30's to be anywhere close to useful, especially with a jump to the AL, and Carp is a decent 1B prospect but nothing to write home about.
